4:15pm Update: Recruiting Rankings

Anecdotally, the gurus fare pretty well in the draft — not perfectly, but well — even after their predictions have been put through the ringer (and even though draft status is not what their ratings are meant to predict). But if you take into account all the numbers, and think of the star rating as a probability rather than a written-in-stone edict, they look that much better.

Thought you would enjoy this retrospective article from Dr. Football comparing the top draft picks to their recruiting rankings coming out of high school. The entry comes after Andy Staples ran a review of the top picks at SI. The following are some quotes and information from these two good reads:

Sports Illustrated’s Andy Staples has already vindicated the recruitniks at the top of this year’s crop, where Matt Stafford, Eugene Monroe, Michael Crabtree, Mark Sanchez, Andre Smith, Michael Oher, Brian Cushing, Beanie Wells, Josh Freeman, Aaron Maybin, Percy Harvin, et al, had “star” written all over them from the beginning. (On the other hand, Jason Smith, Aaron Curry, B.J. Raji and Malcolm Jenkins defied their initial obscurity.)

In NCSU news. We pick up a 7 footer from down under. We get him over USC and others that were entering the picture late. With this addition it makes a top 20 class even better.

I like the looks of our class coming in with what we already have. Got to say great job to Pete Strickland for this latest recruit.

Lowe and the coaches seem to have us on the right track. B Ball looking up!!!

Am I seeing this right? Andre Brown hasn’t been picked yet? I find that surprising. He’ll be a steal anywhere he goes.

Do the Carolina Panthers hate NC State? I feel like they go out of their way to avoid picking up State players. They draft a running back in the 4th round other than Andre Brown, and did they even make a noise in trying to pick up Torry Holt?

Do the Panthers have any State alums on their squad?

The closest we’ve come was Terence Holt last year but he was cut. Too bad, too, because with Tory’s interest, it would uv, could uv, should uv, given the Holt bros a chance to play together. Oh well, if they want to do that Terence can likely get a shot with Jax.

    AB to NYG (yuck!)

Anthony Hill sat out all of 2007 with a shoulder injury and then was sidelined for much of 2008 with that chest injury. That probably played in some as to where he was drafted.

The Panthers have a whole bunch of needs, but WR isn’t one of them. We’ve got arguaby the best receiver pound-for-pound in the game in Steve Smith, one of the best possession receivers in the game in Muhammad, and Dwayne Jarrett who I think will finally be a producer this season. On top of that, we’ve got Ryne Robinson and don’t fotget about Kenneth Moore, the ex-Deacon all purpose guy. Torry has had a great career but he only has a few more seasons left in him.

When Peppers put the team in shut-down mode, the team made a priority to sign Jake to a long-term deal. That’s it, that’s all that has been able to occur this off-season due to that jackass. I’m thrilled with the Everette Brown trade and pick. Awesome job by the Panthers.

I’m happy that the Panthers didn’t take AB because he would have never seen the field. Williams and Stewart are both all-pro caliber backs that will split time for years to come. And then you’ve got to keep Steve Smith happy with 10 or so balls to him a game. It wouldn’t have been an ideal situation here for him and NYG is a much better spot. Hope it works out for him and he’s able to make some noise.

wulfpack – I think the Panthers could have used Holt. Moose has lost a lot of speed, and wasn’t that effective the last couple of years. Perhaps he’s had some nagging injuries, but he wasn’t able to really give the Panthers much help at the secondary WR spot. And as for Jarret, thus far, he definitely falls in the “bust” category.
