4:15pm Update: Recruiting Rankings

Anecdotally, the gurus fare pretty well in the draft — not perfectly, but well — even after their predictions have been put through the ringer (and even though draft status is not what their ratings are meant to predict). But if you take into account all the numbers, and think of the star rating as a probability rather than a written-in-stone edict, they look that much better.

Thought you would enjoy this retrospective article from Dr. Football comparing the top draft picks to their recruiting rankings coming out of high school. The entry comes after Andy Staples ran a review of the top picks at SI. The following are some quotes and information from these two good reads:

Sports Illustrated’s Andy Staples has already vindicated the recruitniks at the top of this year’s crop, where Matt Stafford, Eugene Monroe, Michael Crabtree, Mark Sanchez, Andre Smith, Michael Oher, Brian Cushing, Beanie Wells, Josh Freeman, Aaron Maybin, Percy Harvin, et al, had “star” written all over them from the beginning. (On the other hand, Jason Smith, Aaron Curry, B.J. Raji and Malcolm Jenkins defied their initial obscurity.)

I’m just hoping that Richardson doesn’t hold out with Peppers, trying to salvage some kind of relationship to keep him in Charlotte. We need the cap room cleared, and we need two more draft picks…including one to fill the occasional hole filled by Peppers.

    And there goes Orakpo…

  3. b 04/25/2009 at 4:27 PM #

    He wasn’t even second team.

Heyward-Bey is a poor route runner and has average hands, and struggled against good secondaries on the college level. I thought Maclin would have been reach at that pick, Heyward-Bey is a flat-out pipedream. A pure speed guy in college rarely translates to the NFL, where EVERY CB can fly.

I hate Josh McDaniels. Signed 3 RBs this offseason, then wasted a pick on Moreno.

The Redskins take 15 seconds to cash in on our stupidity. Shit.

If the Broncos take Josh Freeman at 18, I’ll probably break my TV.

IMHO, the Panthers are playing a very dangerous game with Peppers. They should offer him to Denver for the 18.

Ayers is a good pick. Still wasted #12.

The Panthers’ trade window is closing rapidly.

  7. packpowerfan 04/25/2009 at 4:59 PM #

That window is not only closing, but it’s being sealed shut, and the building is being condemned. However, the possibility of holding out for New England’s pick is very real.

Also, while we aren’t trading, the Browns are slowly moving down the board, picking up lots of picks along the way.

Mangini must really hate the Browns’ roster. He’s loading up on volume today. Think they go with Beanie Wells? He’d sell tickets, at least.

I don’t understand who the Eagles thought were going to take Maclin from them, I guess they thought the Browns were going to pick him. I was hoping they’d pick Pettigrew. Maclin ain’t bad though, having three gamebreakers (along with Westbrook and MeSean) on the field at once is never a bad thing.

Peppers is not being traded…it’s just too late…

I’m surprised the Browns didn’t flip Brady Quinn to the Vikings for that pick. Somebody is going to get a good player when they draft Kenny Britt out of Rutgers.

I was a Raiders fan from the time I was old enough to watch pro football. I just shake my head every time Al Davis does something and pray that his passing the torch will come soon.

mini-threadjack: the “Contact SFN” button is not working for me (Mac Safari/Firefox). I sent an email to the address I had used previously, but no response yet. Is that email still working? Or is there an alternative?

    Thanks

Oh dear God. I like Alphonso Smith, but the Broncos just traded what is almost certainly a Top 5-10 pick next year for him. Josh McDaniels should be drawn and quartered.

I am with you BJD. McCoach and Bowlen have made my Broncos irrelavant for the next 5 years. I give their draft a “D” so far. After the Cutler fiasco, Bowlen is the new Al Davis and McDaniels is a godsend for the Bolts, Raiders and Chiefs. A total mile-high CF.

  17. BJD95 04/25/2009 at 7:00 PM #

San Diego could win the division at 7-9 for at least the next five years. The Raiders and the Broncos are being run as if they are trying to fail, and the Chiefs…are still the Chiefs.

  18. WolfInVolCountry 04/25/2009 at 7:15 PM #

I have got to guess Brian Xander is a missing-in-action GM for the Broncos. A rookie standing there saying “Yes sir, Mr. Bowlen.”, “Right you are, Mr. Bowlen.”, “Can I get you another white wine, Mr. Bowlen?”

Shanahan must be laughing himself silly right now. They used to crap on him for his drafts, but this makes him look like Stephen Hawking.

  19. BJD95 04/25/2009 at 7:20 PM #

To make Denver’s trade look even worse – the Panthers swap a much lower #1 pick in 2010, and also get a 4th this season.

A much, much better deal for basically the same caliber player from this draft.

  20. WolfInVolCountry 04/25/2009 at 7:29 PM #

Yeah, the Broncos could have picked up Ron Brace, but NE grabbed him. Hoodie Bill is schooling McCoach.

  21. choppack1 04/26/2009 at 8:11 AM #

Did I read that right – the Broncos picked a Tar Heel TE – Robert Quinn w/ the last pick in the 2nd round??? Was he even supposed to get drafted?

  22. BJD95 04/26/2009 at 9:10 AM #

Traded up to get a Hole TE with 12 career catches. 4 TEs were in Kiper’s “best available” queue – but none of them were this stiff.

From anger to rage for me.

Sorry to change the subject but it sounds as if Sidney got a commitment from the Australian center. I think he would be eligible for the upcoming season. Anyone know anything about him?
