Lowe in the Media; State playing in Hawaii

The following is some biting criticism from one of the more prominent national college basketball blogs:

Let’s run through the challengers for Duke in the state of North Carolina (NC State left out for Sidney Lowe obvious reasons).

Ouch! It is very painful to continue to be ridiculed for our complete irrelevance as a competitive college basketball program. No matter how much our neighbors lose to graduation and the NBA, NC State isn’t good enough to even be in the conversation with most basketball junkies. Great job, “Coach” Fowler. Mens’ basketball is fitting in great with your growing stable of sub-mediocrities.

In other news, Andy Katz shows that despite the Wolfpack’s competitive struggles the program isn’t totally irrelevant with this long article on the Wolfpack and Coach Sidney Lowe that highlights a few interesting items:

“I know I’m going to get the phone call,” Lowe said. “But this is where I am. [Saunders] is not the only one who is going to call. One has already called. But there’s so much here. I love working with young men, teaching them and preparing them for the world.”

[snip]

Lowe is trying to upgrade the schedule. The Wolfpack host Florida in a return of a home-and-home series and do return a game at rebuilding Marquette and start a series at Arizona, which is going through a makeover project. Even though two of these three schools likely aren’t headed for the NCAA tournament, the Pack need confidence early before ACC play begins. Lowe said he is also committing to the inaugural Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu in December with headline teams USC and UNLV.

It is weird how ESPN would have such a more thorough piece than local media providers.

Unfortunately, RTC’s take is only a reflection of the general perception of NC State hoops. To anyone but us, they just don’t matter. NC State is just one of those teams that will play a tough half or ten minutes then conveniently fold. If they stay in the game until the eight minute mark, they’ll swoon. If somehow they get to the last tv timeout, they just might not score a field goal the rest of the way.

It’s Groundhog Day in Hell watching most NC State games anymore. I pray that Alzheimers stays away so at least I can remember when State had good teams and mattered in the conference conversation and was at times in the national conversation.

And if there weren’t a ton of LTR’s sold, I wonder if we would sell even 10,000 for ACC games. I say that because I see a lot of apathy rolling through the fanbase, what’s left of it. Lots of State alum’s kids are growing up to be Carolina or Duke fans — something close the heresy, in the old days. But today, kids have no reason to root in State hoops because State hoops gives them the same good feeling as watching UNC and Duke night after night on ESPN. You can’t blame the kids.

When Lowe said at the Caravan last night that “you know it feels when we lose a close game? It feels one hundred times worse for the coaches.”

Thing is, it just doesn’t hurt any more. I shrug my shoulders and move along, never expecting a win anyway, at least against the top competition.

    Zero times one hundred is….zero.

Any discussion where the records on the field/court are not reflected in the comments and articles would be beneficial exactly how? And to whom?

You can always go to gopack.com if all you want is happy sunshine.

success breeds success and well we know what the opposite brings. BTW is wall heading to DUKE?

  4. Noah 04/24/2009 at 5:49 AM #

I think 3 straight 10th or worse finishes in the ACC pretty much adds up to failure.

Remember…Lowe is happy with the direction the program is going.

Seriously, I think it’s going to take some legit activism among the students- like walking out of games like Pittsburgh Pirates fans did once, wearing Fowler bags to games, etc.

But I know it won’t happen.

  6. Alpha Wolf 04/24/2009 at 6:55 AM #

Lowe is happy with the direction the program is going.

and the Captainof the Titanic took a nap after the iceberg was struck.

On the bright side, they didn’t run out of ice cubes.

I think we should all support our team this year. If things go bad, we can unite and ask the plug be pulled at the end of the season. But I don’t agree with putting the student players through the crap and pulling stunts that will make no decent recruit want to come here.

One of the things that attracted great coaches like Holtz and Spurrier to SC was the passion of the fans and their support no matter what the record.

I just posted an update on the Keeter blog also. Check it out.

I will always support NC State, but my hopes for relevancy of the hoops program has been beaten out of me.

Maybe I am dumb, after all, our esteemeed AD went out of the way to label those of us who talk NC State sports on the Internet as dumb at the Caravan. Nice touch, that, and the joke amongst my friends and I was that I should go and introduce myself to Lee afterward.

I apologize for being a bit over the top – I am just so sick of what Fowler has wrought on our athletics program that I just can’t stand it.

Mens’ basketball is just the most prominent example of that. RtC is probably the best national hoops blog out there, and their criticism hit close to the bone, at least to this long suffering fan. And I can’t disagree with what they’re saying.

  10. kyjelly 04/24/2009 at 7:11 AM #

^Yes lets keep things status quo no stunts. It will hurt recruiting???
Does anyone besides Sid believe he is actually getting offers?? This would actually be funny if it happened elsewhere.
Is it true we are on the verge of signing another 6’1 guard out of Florida? I don’t care what players are leaving other teams around our league,we will be lucky to finish 10th again. I guess than Sid will be happy in the direction the program is taking as well.

Well, when you’re essentially the Clippers of College Basketball, something has to be done.

I will not stop my children from pulling for another team. Why would I subject them to the misery that is NCSU athletics?

  13. jbpackfan 04/24/2009 at 7:30 AM #

We gave Herb 6 years to make the tournament. Lowe has put together a good recruiting class this year, and with Harrow, he has the firt building block of another good class. He will be here next season, so you are all just wasting your breath.

  14. StateFoxer 04/24/2009 at 7:32 AM #

I personally feel that being bitter and jaded are admirable qualities. That’s why I’m forcing my kids to be Pack fans.

We’re all pissed about the state of the AD as a whole and basketball in particular right now. But I think there are a few things in particular worth discussing in this article:

One is the very fact that it was written in the first place. Why would Katz pen a lengthy piece saying essentially that nothing is changing? I infer that he has heard the same rumors that have been popping up here an elsewhere (despite efforts of the powers that be to squelch them).

Second is this quote from Lowe: “this is my first time really starting over here.” I’ve heard from people that Lowe and the outgoing class of Sendek guys just never meshed, which would seem to be reflected in this comment. This is Lowe’s team next year with all his guys, who will play his way, one would assume. Thus, I see no reason not to expect (demand) significant improvement next year even with the loss of our top three scorers.

Finally, how about this article? http://www.wralsportsfan.com/ncsu/story/5007048/ Not sure if it was discussed here. Thought this quote from Fowler was interesting: “The future has to be bright, and Sidney and I have talked a lot about that.” Not the future “is bright”, but that it “has to be bright.” A sign that Sid had better win soon or else?

Thank you for modifying the thread. This is the type of tone and thread that had me comin’ to this site several times a day while I was in Raleigh.

I pray that Alzheimers stays away so at least I can remember when State had good teams and mattered in the conference conversation and was at times in the national conversation.

That’s one way to look at it, Alpha. On the other hand, you could hope for Alzheimer’s so that the sting of each lost game quickly fades into nothingness as you try to remember what to do with a fork.

  18. Alpha Wolf 04/24/2009 at 7:51 AM #

I heard him say that, but I can’t read much between those lines just yet.

and the Captainof the Titanic took a nap after the iceberg was struck.

I think JP Morgan was very comfortable with his captain’s final resting place. Think JPM would have kept Lowe this long?

  20. BJD95 04/24/2009 at 7:59 AM #

I read that as Lowe (futilely, IMHO) trying to be evaluated like next year is his first season. Spin is all he has at this point.

  21. ktoh 04/24/2009 at 7:59 AM #

If he could not “mesh” with “Herbs” players why did it take 4 years for hime to understand this. Best thing to do I would think as the head of a program is my way or the highway?

  22. old13 04/24/2009 at 8:28 AM #

Are we still being patient (times two?)

  23. Thinkpack17 04/24/2009 at 8:29 AM #

I’m predicting a 6th place finish next year. These kids are going to surprise a lot of people, but I do have to agree with the anti-Lowe sentiment in part. With all of the PGs of the ACC leaving if he can’t turn that weakness into a position of strength for us…he may not be our guy. As a former PG in a PG shallow league his players should flourish. There is no reason for Javi and Mays not to be a force in the league this coming year.

  24. GAWolf 04/24/2009 at 8:49 AM #

Here’s a legitimate question for all of you:

Without Russell Wilson, are we excited about football after last season? Assuming the Rutgers game was a microcosm of what the entire season would have been without RW on the field, that is.

Without a point guard who can make a difference day in and day out, will we ever be able to be truly excited about basketball?

Without RW, wouldn’t some of the fans have already started second-guessing the TOB hire? I’m not saying it would be necessarily legit, but don’t you think he’d be getting some heat, too, assuming we would have bumbled through the entire season?

I’m really torn about this Sid issue because he simply doesn’t have the horses to compete day in and day out. After next year, obviously, that will be a monster of his own creation.

“There is no reason for Javi and Mays not to be a force in the league this coming year.”
    `
I’ve read a lot of opinion by the experts on this list that Javi will never be an 1st rate ACC player. How do you arrive at your opinion that Javi will be a force in the league this coming year?
