Deadspin: ‘Stick To Foursquare And Hopscotch, College Boy’

You guys are far more clever than I…so, there is no reason for me to even bother writing something fun.

Yates injures thumb playing frisbee

UNC quarterback T.J. Yates made it through spring practice unscathed but not an impromptu game of Ultimate Frisbee.

Yates sprained his right thumb playing Ultimate Frisbee during an end-of-spring team activity session on Wednesday in Chapel Hill, a UNC spokesman said Friday.

Yates will need six weeks to rehabilitate his throwing hand and will have to wear a splint. The two-year starter does not need surgery. The injury isn’t expected to have a lingering effect on the Tar Heels’ quarterback or be a concern once training camp starts in August.

The freak accident does raise questions about Yates’ durability. He missed six games in 2008 with a sprained left ankle. He had surgery on his right shoulder after the 2007 season, which cost him all of spring practice in 2008.

Yates, who will be a junior, completed 81-of-135 passes for 1,168 yards in seven games last season. He finished with 11 touchdowns and four interceptions.

I would love to have the parking lot concession on red Frisbee’s this year. Could you imagine what the C-F air would look like after another 41-10 whipping?

I would love to make fun of the dude for spraining his thumb playing Frisbee. However, since I fractured and dislocated my middle finger, which required surgery and a rather painful rehab, playing Ultimate Frisbee, I will give him the benefit of the doubt.

Unlucky Yates…sucks for him. I’ve seen way worse in Ultimate though – ACL tears, shoulder seperations, sprained ankles, etc. They shoulda never sent Sexton out the door. *SFN, can someone please contact me at [email protected]. I went to the contact us page, but the link to an email wasn’t there. Please shoot me an email when you get a chance. Thanks.

Nice. At least he didn’t sprain his ankle, whilst chasing down a long toss, in his Berkenstocks. He could have accidentally dislocated his shoulder by running into an activist. Butchie, you may want to quarantine this kid until the Fall! Quarterback? More like Paperback. Sorry. I couldn’t stop myself.

How exactly do you hurt your thumb throwing a frisbee?

CATCHING a frisbee I can see (if you have some sort of developmental disorder)…

One of the MOST painful injuries I ever incurred was a PINKY –I popped a ligament, and, man, it was 6wks of torture!

Congrats on the new iron, BP. Dells are good machines and you will no doubt enjoy having its power…and Windows 7 will scorch on that box.

As for the contact page, try again in an hour or two. I will fix it as soon as I get done with some other stuff.

This is just too easy, but I’m not going to comment.

Perhaps everyone on our defense should send him sympathy/get well soon cards…

Yea, Yates and a pinkie, Lawson with his toe! Dem Tarbabys sho have some weird injuries!

But, then again I know of a college level coach who said he resigned because of his hemmorhoids also! He was feeling some heat in that “general area”, but don’t think it was ‘rhoids!

Maybe Greg Paulus can transfer to the holes and compete for a starting job there…..

Hey SFN, is there any way to contact you guys? The Contact button does not work for me (in Safari, Firefox or Opera on a Mac), and I’ve tried the email I’ve used before but no response yet.

    Thanks

Ya’ll have no idea what this man did for ACC football.

Sorry if the link did not get hypered. WRAL. Sports. Duke football star passes.

Just read and know that the effort he put forth over the last 3 or so yrs. to make an attempt, to make Duke football competitive again, will be appreciated by Wolfcrackers everywhere.

And know that his closest friends were from ones that ran with the PACK.

ha, ha-ha-ha. this will be funny until another one of our starters goes down with a non-football related injury.

on that sentiment, saw Donald Bowens (who was pretty ambulatory from what i saw and no brace or crutches) at the spring game. he said he is “back full strength” come the fall. don’t know if that’s what he is supposed to be saying or if its actually true.

and when the hell is some more info going to come out about this Fowler/BOT mumbo jumbo? was it all just a farce?

Few! There goes that frisby play Carolina was going to run on us.

  17. highstick 04/30/2009 at 1:20 PM #

Cowdog, is the Tommy Beecher mentioned as a grandchild the same Tommy Beecher who started the year at QB at South Carolina? Think he was from the Concord area in high school???

  18. highstick 04/30/2009 at 1:41 PM #

Whoops, just answered my own question when I read a few lines above and saw where his parents lived.

Tommy is a nice kid, just wish it had worked out better for him at South Carolina. Maybe this was what had him somewhat distracted this past year.

Actually Highstick, it came out of left field.

    In his sleep. A shocker.

Glad you took the time to check it out.

Had a few “spirited” conversations over the proper way to receive a pass. His take was little fingers in, thumbs out at all opportunities. Mine was thumbs in, little fingers out at all costs.

I knew I was right, but then, I never played with Mike Ditka in 2 college all-star games either. T really, really liked Ditka.

Very rare in life a true renaissance man crosses paths.

Again ‘Stick, thanks for looking in to this man. And for that matter, letting us know you did.

  20. highstick 05/01/2009 at 7:13 PM #

Cowdog, did you see Strahan’s fingers on Hannity the other night? I don’t think any of his fingers joints pointed in the same direction.

It didn’t take me too many times to figure out that I needed to get my right hand protected “behind the plate”! Just wish I’d known back then what was going to happen with my knees later.
