Deadspin: New Look for Sportscenter

SportsCenter Opening Animation from ESPN Communications on Vimeo.

Just thought that you would enjoy. (Link)

It is a world ruled by machines; antiseptic, efficient, pitiless … like The Matrix, only without the warmth. Sports Center’s new graphics are even more curious than before. And you cannot help but watch.

I’ve always been fascinated by the Sports Center opening; especially the graphics, which seem to be assembled from components from a technology we know nothing about. That thing fits where? Why is that gizmo revolving? Hey look, it’s a line that goes nowhere! The only item I recognize is that round thing in the photo to the left, which I believe is what R2D2 plugged into whenever Han needed a hatch opened on the Death Star.

How did people live without SportsCenter.

God do I love that show.

Sounds like they got Trans Siberian Orchestra to perform the opening theme.

    Which, of course, sucks.

I don’t know about SportsCenter anymore. Between their over-hyping of the “Best Rivalry in Sports” (Dookies vs. Holes) and their love affair with all things Boston (Tapetriots, Boston 3 party, blah blah blah), I’m done watching it. And somebody please tell Stewart Scott to get that lazy eye fixed. I lose my appetite every time I see him trying to follow the teleprompter.

I rarely watch SC anymore. I just don’t care for the MTV generation of soundbites, dunks and 20 seconds of ‘highlights’. At least they give us shows like Baseball tonight, College Basketball tonight, and NFL Live to provide more tangible ‘deep dives’ into relevant information.

^Amen. I can’t remember the last time I watched SportsCenter. Most of their on-air “personalities” grate my nerves, as does their wish to force literally every topic down my throat as if IT IS THE BIGGEST THING TO HAPPEN EVER. EVER!
