Coping With Another Hole Title (Updated 9am Tuesday)

“Our fans are comparing ourselves to Duke and North Carolina. Every program in the country doesn’t do well when you’re compared with those two on a day-to-day basis. I understand that our fans want to be able to compete with them; we all do. But you can be real good on a daily basis and not be better than those two programs.”

Don’t ignore yesterday’s look-in at all sports…but, this morning we have to discuss a little basketball.

Tuesday Update
When NC State gave up basketball in 1990 – the Wolfpack held two National Championships; UNC-CH held two, and Duke held none.

When Lee Fowler was hired as Athletics Director a decade ago – the Wolfpack held two National Championships, UNC-CH held three, and Duke held two.

After ten years of (lack of leadership) from Lee “I know basketball and I have a contract” Fowler – the Wolfpack STILL holds two National Championships, UNC-CH now has five, and Duke now has three.

Great work managing that program, Lee! I could only imagine where we would be if you didn’t ‘know basketball’!

We wrote this highly-trafficked entry when the Tarheels won their National Championship in 2005. We implore you to click on it and give it a read (the charts no longer work) as we see no reason to bust our ass to update it this morning since it still couldn’t be more relevant this morning. The following is a taste:

Good morning, sleepy head!!!

Did you sleep well? Heck, did you sleep at all? Regardless of if you tossed and turned all night, you have awoken to a New World Order!!! Sounds kind of ominous, doesn’t it? No matter, it is true –

You now live in an environment and under a set of circumstances that have LITERALLY NEVER existed as they do today — April 5, 2005. April 7, 2009.

For many, this N.W.O. is nothing that you haven’t felt inside or intuitively known since…oh….about 1995 or so. But, having ‘felt’ it for a decade still may not compensate or serve to ease many Wolfpackers pain this morning. You went to bed last night without letting all of the ramifications of your arch-rival’s newly minted National Championship sink into your system, and you have woken this morning to a landscape that has never existed in the history of NC State’s Basketball program.

As of THIS MORNING, NC State is further behind UNC-CH in National Basketball Titles (and ACC Titles) than we have been at any point in the entire history of college basketball. Additionally, there has never been a day on this earth where BOTH Carolina and Duke held this lead in ACC and National Championships over NC State.

Think about that for a moment…especially you jackasses that constantly degrade our tradition because you can’t grasp its magnitude…and you Fowlerites and Kennellites who openly proclaim that NC State athletics should not strive to contend for Championships or measure to the standards of Carolina and Duke. (I wish that someone would have told us this was NC State’s “not goal” [since we don’t have any goals or measurements] BEFORE we were solicited to pony-up tens of thousands of dollars just to sit in dead arena and watch the college version of the Washington Generals go out and tackle one of the nations worst non-conference schedules on an annual basis.)

[snip]

Lee Fowler is our Athletics Director, and as of THIS MORNING, the Athletics Department that he leads has NEVER, EVER been further behind Carolina’s and Duke’s in championships.

Surely you don’t wonder why this could be the case.

BJD on Monday night
As I have watched UNC play defense all tournament long and dispatch opponents with shocking ease, I have made my piece with Roy Boy getting his second ring. I sure as hell don’t like it, but I can accept it. Suggested coping methods (put yours in the comments):

1) Grudgingly admit that UNC is a worthy champion. Other than Hansbrough’s whiny antics, I have no real disgust for any of their players. They play hard, play together, and keep up an entertaining pace. Contrast that to Deano’s peak years.

2) It will really piss off Coach K. Roy’s run in Chapel Hill is making K so jealous that I believe he would blow Dwon Clifton on TV to sign John Wall. Sorry for the nightmare fuel. As queasy as we will be around 11:28 pm, you can take comfort that at least one man will be even more inconsolable.

3) Feel good for the nice Hole fans that you know. As you know, Hole fans are more prevalent than flies on dogshit in mid-August. Because the sheer numbers are so high, you have to know at least a few that you don’t want to punch. If you’re local, it’s possible a subset of those fans (well, probably all of them) actually went to school there. If you live in Boston, these are probably the same people who pretend that they liked the Patriots before they were good (and strangely don’t know who Steve Grogan is).

That’s all I have. Thank God it will be all over soon, save for the gayest riot you’ve ever seen.

Chop, let them have him. I just wish he would pick one and declare already.

Let the winner have Wall AND Clifton.

LOL Grey – I graduated from NC State! I know that the Russians were responsible for Pearl Harbor.

I edited the original to suit the Pack. Thx to Alpha for posting the full text.

Hilarious. I hope Wall goes to UNC and K has a complete nervous breakdown. All to better magnify how thoroughly NC State has failed to compete in mens’ basketball.

I’d still bet good money that he goes to Kentucky. But the Holes would make lots of sense for Wall. It’s a good fit.

  4. ThomYorkepack 04/07/2009 at 2:51 PM #

Wall? We didn’t want him anyway, right? 🙂 That will be what you’ll hear…

  5. TheCOWDOG 04/07/2009 at 2:59 PM #

Actually, I think Wall and his agenda (posse included) might be of great entertainment value for us should he carry his baggage over to UNC or Duke.

Do you think a kid that has minnions in his ear and NBA money in his head will be coachable?

I firmly believe that there is a trainwreck a comin’ to those that are coveting his single season tenure.

  6. bradleyb123 04/07/2009 at 3:20 PM #

I’ll say it… I wanted Wall to come to State! I certainly don’t want him at Duke or UNC adding insult to injury, and beating up on us next year.

One-and-done, probably. Baggage, maybe. I don’t care. I want that type of recruit that may help generate interest from other great players in subsequent years. He could have helped us get a few more wins, which could bring about more success for us going forward (success breeds success).

So yes, I wanted him here.

  7. Wulfpack 04/07/2009 at 3:27 PM #

Do you think a kid that has minnions in his ear and NBA money in his head will be coachable?

Well, there is a much better chance he is coachable if he goes to a program with a legitimate chance to win a national championship — a program where no one player is greater than the whole.

  8. packbackr04 04/07/2009 at 3:31 PM #

so is larry harris going to AZ with Miller?

  9. TheCOWDOG 04/07/2009 at 3:36 PM #

“…a program where no one player is greater than the whole.”

And that’s where the train wrecks. The boy ain’t looking for a ring. I’ve not read one thing attributed to him that reflects a want of an NCAA championship.

I could be wrong, wouldn’t be the first time.

The kid just sends out flashing yellow lights to me.

I had a sneaky feeling that it was a quote. Too ridiculous not to be. the problem with being old is you miss some good stuff along the way like Animal House.

Thanks, Alpha, for posting enough to put it in context for me.

Cowdog – His high school team’s record says a lot to me.

I don’t know how you have the top ranked player in high school, a 5 star PF, and several other college prospects and go 14-12.

Granted, there’s definitely coaching issues but a true leader overcomes that.

“I don’t know how you have the top ranked player in high school, a 5 star PF, and several other college prospects and go 14-12.”

Is Sidney Lowe moonlighting as that high school team’s coach?

    Sorry, couldn’t resist.

If you have an issue with something that is posted, either rebut it in the comments or forward the issue to the website. However, don’t bring up the same complaint in thread after thread when the original issue is not being repeated.

I think that you are being played like a fiddle….but that’s just my opinion. VaWolf82

Clearly, all discussion must stop IMMEDIATELY. Everyone just sit still, fold your hands in your lap and think happy thoughts.

    That will fix everything.

So my gut feeling regarding the Fowler fiasco last Friday was nothing more than a hoax or that nothing is going to come of it. Has anyone heard anything else or has it still been pretty silent?

  17. Greywolf 04/07/2009 at 4:22 PM #

I’m heading to the Canes game with the Islanders in about an hour. This has me think about how Paul Maurice handled the booing for him and at times for the team. He kept praising the fans, saying what great fans the Caniacs were. The Canses players were pretty neat about it to. Ray Whitney said, “You don’t want to get booed in your own house.” meaning play better. The Canes have won 11 in a row in “their house” at this time and 8 straight overall. Somewhat different than our “leader,” eh?

The signs are pointing to our having a shake-up in the head of NCSU athletics department. I doubt we all can agree on the “best” course of events, like we can’t agree on the best course of events with our basketball coach.
    `
Perhaps we can do something besides agree or disagree. What about **aligning** with whatever goes down. We can align even if we don’t agree. I’d like to see us align on Sid being our coach until he’s not, which will come soon enough if we screw the pooch next season.

  18. TheAliasTroll 04/07/2009 at 4:35 PM #

I’ll definitely align if there is indeed a shake-up in the head of the NCSU athletics dept. You cannot deny that any change there is likely to be a good change.

    Oh, and go Canes!

Last week, before “The Rumor” hit on Friday, I had determined that my ongoing long frustration, not only with Wolfpack athletics, but also with the obvious do-nothing attitudes of, and mismanagement by the BOT and Chancellor, had reached its limit. Because I felt the need to reduce this MAJOR tension in my life, I determined to chuck all things NCSU for the foreseeable future and just stay away from all things NCSU in all capacities. Then “The Rumor” hit and I thought there might be some hope yet.

Having deeply considered this turn in events and various related discussions here, I’ve determined that my first choice was correct UNLESS something actually materializes concerning “The Rumor.” And I think it would take more that just the firing (not reassigning) of Foulup. I’d like to have a public policy statement from Oblinger and/or the chairman of the BOT indicating some change in how the university is run, for I, like many of you, think that the problem eminates on high and permeates through the entire NCSU spectrum. I also think of the master plan, or whatever Duke called the document that they developed concerning the Duke football program. Maybe something like that is needed at NCSU, with The Powers That Be signing off (literally) on it.

In any case, if nothing significant comes of “The Rumor,” if there is no clear and strong (no mere lip service) indication of a commitment and policy change by the ENTIRE administration to building up NCSU in all aspects including athletics, I’m done with NCSU and they can take my sheep skin (College of Engineering ’68) and shove it!

Llama, can you do one of Lee talking about the Interweb????

  22. TheAliasTroll 04/07/2009 at 5:04 PM #

E-fight! I thought this was what we were trying to steer away from?

Anyways, is SFN planning on doing a follow up piece to that Fowler rumor, even if it turns out not to be true or if you guys have any more solid info to post? I find myself checking this website every 15 minutes in case there is any breaking news, but have been disappointed thus far. I know they said to be patient, but damn if it isn’t hard. I better click some ads for all the bandwith I’ve probably used up.

I’ve been a silent reader of this blog for few years since I graduated from State back in 04. I’ve been readying people’s comments and noticed their frustration about the direction of our athletic program. The most I saw from people was that they would stop their donations and that’s about it!!! Is this really all we can do? Do you guys think that students care about the fact that we suck in every sport at all or not? I guess if they dont care, we should stop whinning and let it go! but if they really care and want to see improvement, why not planning some student gathering to express people’s frustration about the AD and its direction? I’m wondering what will happen if we gather +5000 students somewhere and let them express their frustration with AD and its direction peacefully…you guys think this is doable? otherwise, just whinning online and cursing everone for their success aint gonna take us any where!

  24. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 04/07/2009 at 5:37 PM #

I’m as critical as most on this site but I think it is unfair to talk about the university as a whole being run poorly. It is true State has suffered some real PR and athletic blunders over the last few years but State’s academic programs are excelling beyond anyone’s imagination 20 years ago.

We all justifiably have our frustrations with athletics and some of the other problems but we shouldn’t focus our anger on a great institution. State is leading the world in many new technologies in agriculture, engineering, vet medicine, textiles and in the other schools on campus.

NC State fans shouldn’t rip apart the institution so much as demand the same level of excellence in sports as academics.
