Basketball Bytes – Hansbrough fouls even in celebration (11:15 updated w/ column on Roy)

So much going on out there that we couldn’t ignore it all and thought you would appreciate a comprehensive entry following-up on a lot of topics.

celebrationbyRobertWillett

This couldn’t be more classic.

The picture to the left was taken by the N&O/Charlotte Observer’s Robert Willett after Monday night’s NCAA Championship game and served as the front page for the Charlotte Observer.  A better version of the picture can be seen by clicking here. Do us a favor and click there to drive some traffic in return for us posting the pic; and, while you are ‘surfing’ why not hit our new Google ads a bit 🙂

I want you to take note of Tyler Hansbrough right arm and the odd positioning of his body while he is running.  Compare his ‘running’ posture to that of every other player in the picture (and every other player in the world).  Sheesh…Hansbrough is friggin pushing-off and attempting to slow down the faster Wayne Ellington as the Tarheels storm the court to celebrate.  Some things never change, eh?  It is not even natural when you look at positioning of his body.  I am 100% serious, who runs like that?  ‘Psycho T’ is so accustomed to knocking around others that he literally cannot step onto the court even in celebration without creating some kind of contact with people around him.  We later learned that this contact resulted in Hansbrough shooting two extra free throws hours after the game.

Going pro

  • It appears Wake Forest will experience a 1-1-1 situation between their roster and the NBA as James Johnson is gone; Jeff Teague will test the waters without an agent; and Al Farouq-Aminu will return to Winston-Salem.  (Link)
  • Lots of smoke emerging around Gerald Henderson and Ed Davis. (Link) These are potential ‘conference transformers’ next year.  The ACC would be shaping up for someone like NC State to make a move if we were better positioned to take advantage of the changes.
  • Out in the desert the great Herb Sendek will lose the services of All-American guard, James Harden.  (Link) Sendek ‘coincidently’ hired Harden’s coach just before Harden committed to the Sun Devils; so, it appears Harden’s old coach will out last him in Phoenix.  Harden will go down as one of the greatest players in ASU history and will finish his career with a 20-16 conference record and a 1-1 record in his lone NCAA Tournament appearance.  ASU will have two of their players drafted this summer as all-conference post player, Jeff Pendergraph was a senior.  Maybe it is becoming more clear why coach Sendek tried to position himself for jobs at Virginia, Georgia and Kentucky this off-season.  It’s a shame the Athletics Directors at those schools don’t ‘know basketball’ like the media and Lee Fowler.
  • Sean Miller’s first year at Arizona isn’t going to be easy as he may lose his three best players; two have already jumped. I know that was some good money; but I can’t help but wonder a little about this move.
  • If you want more on early entries you will enjoy this link at Rush the Court.  It is funny to see ‘unranked’ Brandon Costner’s name sitting there.  Also of interest is Florida’s Nick Calathes.  It is good to see Calathes’ name on the list considering his performance against NC State last year and the fact the Gators visit the RBC Center next season.

Coaching talk

  • Fran McCaffery has reportedly signed a new eight year contract at Siena.  (Link) I personally think that McCaffery would have ended up at Virginia if the Cavaliers had not landed Tony Bennett (or someone from that similar tier).  I can’t help but keep my eye on McCaffery.
  • Florida State’s Leonard Hamilton got a five year contract at Florida State.  As RTC said, ‘ensuring another half-decade of mediocrity in Tallahassee.’

Roy Williams Haskell? (update)

  • Mike Freeman of CBS Sportsline doesn’t seem to be as enamored with the “Aww Shucks” personna of Roy Williams as some: Williams has been able to pull off one of the neatest tricks in all of sports — portraying himself as a golly-gee guy while quietly being just as cutthroat and bottom line as almost every other person in his profession. The only difference between Jim Calhoun and Williams is public temperament and spoken accent.” That’s not the only firecracker Freeman tosses at Ole Roy’s feet, and it is entertaining reading to be sure. Maybe we should send Freeman a live-feed link to the Roy Williams Show where he jumps on his fans?

Others

  • RTC ran a very cool series on the best team of the modern era – UNLV from 1991 won.
  • As a follow-up to the previous Hansbrough comments you should take a look at Deadspin’s entry. It is hilarious, as is the video in it that we are including below.

    Noah…
you are right. Final 4 ratings are down every year.
sooner or later CBS will Have To Revise Tip Times
to accomodate the East Coast. to compare: the Rose
Bowl is over before the F4 Monday game tips. the reason
i heard about late tip-times for the “blues” was the
higher viewership. just like Sid’s program: it ain’t
    working.

“Maybe. The thing that keeps me from agreeing with you is how good the offense looked when Atsur was playing hurt.”

I for one appreciate this reasoned response to the criticism. There may come a day when those in the “Lowe is a failure” camp get to say I told you so once and for all. But in the meantime, as long as he is coach of NC State, he gets at least a modicum of respect from me. No State fan is satisfied with the W/L’s, but shrill bitching is tacky.

“Suggestion, if you don’t like the content of a post, skip to the next one.”

^You’re a fine one to talk.

FTR, what I said (open basketball thread; no one suggesting replacements for Sid; you brought him up) was matter of fact and not meant to be taken personally. No sting was intended, but knowing who I was addressing I should have known better that it would be twisted in the worst possible manner.

Maybe this is what they were waiting for before firing Foulup.

Thanks for the link. I started a new entry for those that want to discuss women’s basketball. VaWolf82

    Thanks. I think that’s a good move!

^Per old13’s link, I was hoping the women’s job would go to Glance – but it’s not to be.

I’m taking a wild, speculative guess here – but I’m going to say Carolyn Peck.

His final year there Lowe was 23-67. Then Hubie Brown takes over, goes 83-85 in a couple of seasons and wins the NBA Coach of the Year award the season after Lowe was canned.

Lowe coached the Grizzlies before Pal Gasol (sp?) was drafted and coached the Timberwolves before Garnett even got a driver’s license, let alone getting drafted.

I really don’t know what to make of Lowe’s coaching ability based on his NBA record, since he inherited a couple of bad situations. Hube Brown took over the Grizzlies during Gasol’s rookie year or the year before he was drafted (can’t remember) and the Grizzlies got Jerry West as their GM the year Lowe was forced to resign and started adding talent over the next couple of seasons.

Clearly NBA coaches thought well enough of Lowe to keep him employed as an assisstant and as much pressure as their is in the NBA for coaches to win right away, I can’t picture them keeping someone on who is clueless about basketball.

Whether an asisstant can transition to becoming a successful head coach is always a million dollar question, but I don’t think Sid’s problem is lack of basketball knowledge. I just can’t picture NBA assisstants hanging around, who can’t deliver.

The thing that keeps me from agreeing with you is how good the offense looked when Atsur was playing hurt.

Now I’m not necessarily thinking that Sid can’t make it, but wasn’t it his duty to get an effective replacement for Astur? Will Mays be that guy next season – Javi, although improved, hasn’t lept to that level yet?

Agreed. I think that his biggest problem is not having ANY D1 coaching/recruiting/”babysitting” experence at the time of his hiring INTO THE ACC. That gaff lies solely at the feet of one Foulup – and it’s so obvious to the casual observer I can’t believe that Foulup totally ignored it. (Well, seeing that it WAS Foulup, I guess I can believe it – but it’s so obvious to the casual observer .)

Absolutely, but he had to find someone even though the next two classes were essentially already wrapped up. As we’ve discussed this afternoon on the other BB entry, Lowe had to sign three classes worth of recruits in his first six months on campus…..without knowing how any of them would work out or how long any would stay.

  9. GAWolf 04/09/2009 at 7:13 PM #

I know this is hard for some of you to believe, but there was a time, and a time not so long ago, when people on this board could 100% completely disagree with each other and not be angry about it.

I think this realization concerns me.

  10. old13 04/09/2009 at 7:22 PM #

^ Signs of the times – and consider what has caused this great divisiveness.

  11. packalum44 04/09/2009 at 8:03 PM #

I’m also of the mind that if we said 5 or 6 years, we should be willing to pay him for the 5 or 6 years.

So if the legislatures sets the speed limit at 55 you go 55 right? They set the speed limit at 55 when they think a safe speed is 60-65. A 5 year contract doesn’t mean you get 5 years. It means you get 3 or 4. As TOB says, “It is what it is.” Don’t hate the player, hate the game…

  12. Wolf Dog 04/09/2009 at 8:57 PM #

GAWolf As long as I’ve read this blog and seen Noah and a few other posting I have never seen people not getting Angry. That redwolf or whatever his title is LOL funny.

Noah posts over the line comments about state fans (called us bigots) to comparing Sid to the likes of Wade and others. We expect that from the UNX fans, but not from from true NCSU fans. If state fans had any hope, Noah will see to it they lose it all. But hey thats his style/personality and I am sure if he is that way at home he finds the sofa many a night.

One can state thier opinions and feeling without the hand granade statements made by a few that are truely intended to throw kerosine on the fire. They are not intelligent or even within topic posts. This blog was not even about Sid’s record or trying to find the worst coaches you could compare Lowe with, but Noah found a way to turn this into a Sid bashing like he has for the past couple of years. We get it, he hates Lowe! He should go set up his own firelowe web site and be done with it. I can tell many on here are tired of hearing his constant I hate Lowe love UNX soap box debate.

Bottom line is no one is sure how good a coach Lowe is, the media has well documented it, and Gene made a great summary of coach Lowe and his record. Until we know and he is the coach lets go root for the pack!!!

If we had hired a proven college coach, we all be saying we knew it would take time, the coach has gutted the program, ditched the slow down offense, the slow players are gone, we rebuilding, got a great class coming in, kept our staff intact, and we got a fresh start this year.

  13. GAWolf 04/09/2009 at 9:08 PM #

There are a lot of new posters here. And honestly, I think of Noah as being one of them. There just seems to be a lot of the same names around here now that helped drive me from the “other board” for almost good. And it’s not that I necessarily dislike or doubt any of these people, they just seemed to be a little quicker to “argue” rather than debate. To each his own, I guess.

I have considered the source of it all, and actually that’s what concerns me. We haven’t had a 2 year window in the last 15 to 20 years when all State fans were happy and on the same page. Certainly over particular periods of time it has gotten more heated than others, but I think it’s ridiculous that there has been not one period of time when both major sports were decent enough for us fans to be able to sit back and enjoy it. There’s always reason to bicker about something legitimate… and not, say, argue over which McDAA we’ll have to play in our starting point guard’s spot while he gets over an ingrown toenail.

  14. Wolf Dog 04/09/2009 at 9:27 PM #

Well spoken GAWolf. State fans not so bad. Looking down the road too, UNX fans earlier this year calling for Roy’s head when they were 0-2 in ACC and when he didn’t win the ACCT. Said “Roy ain’t a game coach” Some saying if they had a better coach UNC would have at least 3 NCAA titles since they had Hans!

At least our fans are not that insane.

Oh well here’s to football season. Really looking forward to Spring game. I will avoid the blog until then before Noah starts comparing TOB to Tommy West, Torbush, Tom Reed, etc. and ruins my hope for this football season.

    wufpup76,
What is this about your post not meant to be taken personally? For most people “you brought him up” makes it personal. If it wasn’t personal, why not just say, ‘I didn’t mean it personally’ and move on.
    `
FYI My post wasn’t about replacing Lowe or not. If you weren’t pissed off waiting to happen, you would have seen that. What’s the ‘I should have known better that it would be twisted in the worst possible manner” if not personal? What was it about THIS post that got under your skin? Actually this goes back further than this thread, doesn’t it? I must have pissed in your cornflakes somewhere further back.
    `
If you are one of the mods here (thread monitors), just say so. I know the mods are off limits.

    Dear State Basketball,

I think we need to take a break from each other. It’s not me, it’s you. This doesn’t mean I don’t love you, but I just need to evaluate my feelings — this just isn’t working for me anymore. I hope you can understand.

    Yours truly,

    LRM

Just wanted to give u a heads up SFN, you are violating Google Adsense policy:

In order to ensure a good experience for users and advertisers, publishers may not request that users click the ads on their sites or rely on deceptive implementation methods to obtain clicks. Publishers participating in the AdSense program:

    * May not encourage users to click the Google ads by using phrases such as “click the ads,” “support us,” “visit these links,” or other similar language

  19. LRM 04/10/2009 at 8:48 AM #

ESPN’s bottom line is reporting breaking news that statefansnation.com has violated Google Adsense policy, and possibly faces major sanctions from the independant sports blogging association.

The violation was reported by an anonymous email from an IP address associated with Gopack.com, and signed “Coach LF.”

More to come as this story unfolds…

  20. branjawn 04/10/2009 at 2:34 PM #

    That’s pretty funny LRM. Seriously.

But back to the point, just to further explain and educate anyone who thinks it’s not a big deal… I run web marketing for a company and we use Google Adwords. We pay sites to display ads for our products. I would be very upset if I were paying for clicks that were not genuine, costing me money for no return whatsoever.
