ACC Sports Journal Wolfpack Insider: Dividing Lines

This article from the ACC Sports Journal was one of the more interesting and accurate takes on the relationship between NC State fans, former basketball coach Herb Sendek, and current AD Lee Fowler. This also was the only article written by the ACC media on the rumors of Lee Fowler’s departure that spread on various NC State message boards a few weeks ago.

(UPDATE: Joe Ovies of 850 The Buzz reminds us that he penned this article on April 12th: The Curious Case of Lee Fowler, so there were actually two stories.)

The Sendek supporters, though, will not admit that Sendek failed to win anything of significance or at a high level. While he did lead State to five consecutive NCAA Tournaments, the Wolfpack was seeded higher than No. 7 only once. In seven trips to the Big Dance as a head coach, Sendek has made it to the Sweet 16 just once. He also is now 0-4 in ACC or Pac-10 title games.

Now there is a new dividing figure in Raleigh, and that’s athletic director Lee Fowler. On April 2, one day after April Fool’s Day, posts were popping up on message boards that members of N.C. State’s Board of Trustees were meeting regarding Fowler’s future and that the AD was on the way out.

Sure enough, Fowler was in his office the next day, but the rumors had been so strong that WRAL was granted an interview with Fowler to settle them.

“I’m still here,” he said. “I’ve got a contract through October of 2013.”

everyone talks about Herb running a clean program but i dont buy that. Herbs players attended just about as many classes as any other D1 programs(not many). nothing special. and then, when he left raleigh, he went and hired Hardens AAU coach just to get Hardens commitment. that is as shady as it gets. Just because Lee had no idea what he was doing doesnt mean NCSU did a bad thing when we allowed/encouraged Herb to leave. That article makes it sound like Lee made logical decisions after Barnes and Cal said no. State fans were not mad at Fowler for missing on those 2 guys. State Fans were mad because after the 2 big guns said no. Fowler started begging guys like Steve Lavin to take the job. There were dozens of coaches out there who would have taken the position and Fowler shit the bed.

no if ands or butts about it. Lee made his own bed, and now he has to sleep in it.

I can appreciate this article because it makes it sound reasonable that NC State fans would be disappointed with Lee Fowler. Hell, I think it even goes so far as to rationalize that Fowler is on the hot seat. It’s been hard to get the media to finally admit that.

Coaches are easy targets. When you start putting an AD under the microscope, you know there’s some trouble brewing.

I only hope it results in a new AD at NC State soon.

  3. CStanley 04/21/2009 at 9:29 PM #

I also thought the assessment of Herb was very fair. He’s a good coach. Not a great coach. We were not a bunch of meanies for wanting a change. Sometimes you gotta know when to get the hell out. That time had come for Herb. And that time is LOOOOONG overdue for Lee.

I’m impressed by the ACCSJ running with this story. I know two members of the Wolfpack Club (I have stated clearly my refusal to join or to donate until Fowler is removed), and if those two former State grads (one an All-American performer and NFL player) have no clue as to why the situation is what it is, then I can only reasonably assume that the distance between the supporters (fans, students, alumni, donors) of this program and Fowler are much farther apart than many of our discussion sites have previously noted. If you’re a graduate of the university, which I am (Class of ’98), you’re no doubt embarrassed–not just by the lack of passion in the head of the Athletics department where your sweat was poured into those gyms or fields, or your dollars have helped pour concrete into C-F’s stands; but more importantly but the flippant, haughty attitude of Lee Fowler, his apparent mishandling of the personnel portion of his job, his Bush-Tenet-style relationship with Oblinger (who has his own image problems in the eyes of State alumni), and his well-documented spinal-ectomy as to firing extremely unsuccessful coaches in fiscally non-productive sports. Seriously, what more does Lee Fowler need to convince him that he is unwanted by the fanbase, overmatched in handling the duties required of him, and dishearteningly blind to his a realistic self-image.

One can only hope that the rumors are true and that Fowler is really on his way out the door….. I guess that time will tell.

Rye: I will repeat something BJD said today: that patience is a virtue.

    SaccoV well said
Lee has done a terrible job here, he cares not for results of the programs he oversees….which is the exact thing he should car for…..TOB said, “we are a results oriented program”
Lee your job is results oriented…which is why you have to be on the way out, and you should expect to be on the way out….If i was Lee Fowler and my athletic programs were as bad as ours are….I would expect to be fired

  7. Wulfpack 04/22/2009 at 6:00 AM #

Yet we still give gobs of cash, fans still fill the stands. If there is a fault of a Wolfpack fan, it’s that he’s too damn loyal.

  8. coppertop 04/22/2009 at 7:00 AM #

You have to admit that the article closes with implying that he is going to take a position somewhere else very soon and leave in the same manner Sendek did. Which I suppose is good for everyone involved…

Cstanley: “When you start putting an AD under the microscope, you know there’s some trouble brewing.”

AD’s are kinda like long snappers, when the average fan knows their name, something is wrong.

    A few points
    1) His comment about “my contract runs until Oct 2013” just reeks of arrogance (a LF trademark).
    2) I keep hearing people say he tired to appease the fans with his basketball search. The problem with that is LF has never done ANYTHING to appease the fans. He does what he wants when he wants. So now we are supposed to believe he completely screwed up the search in an effort to appease the fans? BS
    3) Surely Fowler is not surprised that people want him gone. The guy has insulted the fan base at every turn. Why would anyone (outside of greywolf) want him here?

  11. PackBacker001 04/22/2009 at 7:17 AM #

Good article, but I’m not sure the premise is correct. Is Lee Fowler really a dividing figure? I haven’t found anyone who will say he’s doing a great job. Hell, not even a good job. Wanting Fowler gone is about the most unifying thing we’ve got as State fans. Numbers don’t lie: we are not healthy as an athletic department.

Of course, I see that someone has already taken a personal shot at another poster, so maybe I’m wrong. What is so hard to understand about this site’s rules of behavior?

I might be very late commenting about this, but the wrestling team recently signed Eloheim Palma, the #1 ranked heavyweight in the nation. This three time state champion from Cary High chose NC State at a special banquet last night. He was recruited heavily by national powerhouses such as Iowa. In the end, Palma said it came down to being a Wolfpack fan on the inside. Coach Jordan has now signed three high school national champions and has one of the best (if not THE best) recruiting class in the nation. The wrestling team seems to be one of the few programs that is showing signs of promise.

  13. Rick 04/22/2009 at 7:18 AM #

BTW they are projecting Harden as a top 5 pick.
Herb had a top 5 NBA pick and an All Conference center and did the same old crap he did here. Choke in the big game and hit the “Sendek Ceiling” (round of 32) in the tournament.

  14. BSIE80 04/22/2009 at 7:35 AM #

How about 2 weeks without discussing Fowler?

    Possible topics:
    Where are they now?
    Possible women’s BB recruits.
Best team sports in State history.
Worst team sports in State history.
Best individual athlete in State history (DT excluded.)

If you would like to not discuss Fowler, then don’t comment on the thread. Participation is not a requirement and if there is any news – and this article is news – then it is fair game.

  15. Rick 04/22/2009 at 7:47 AM #

“How about 2 weeks without discussing Fowler?”

When many people believe he is the person standing in the way of NCSU success he is going ot be discussed

  16. Wolf Dog 04/22/2009 at 7:48 AM #

If you want Fowler gone, you need to use Fowler’s arrogance to your advantage.

Fowler’s arrogance is why he made a huge mistake by commenting on the Internet Rumors of April 2nd. Two things happened: he gave it credibilty and he exposed how unpopular he is among Wolfpack fans.

Now the ACCsports Journal has written an article on it. Now you need to keep the ball rolling, now is not the time to quit talking about him.

Read his lips: ” I have a contract till Oct 2013″

That means we buy him out, weasel him out by making up something on him like UNX did with Doherty, or pressure him so much he leaves like Herb either as retirement or another job!

  17. choppack1 04/22/2009 at 8:26 AM #

A couple of thoughts on the article here:
    1) Another poster nailed it, there’s nothing divisive about Fowler – there is almost universal consensus amongst Wolfpacker’s that he’s a problem. He has his defenders – but there defense is usually that it’s those above him who are at fault, not him. No one, and I mean, no one, is arguing that NC State athletics are in great overall shape when it comes to results on the field.

    2) Finally, finally, some article mentions that we are near the bottom of the ACC. For that alone, I give this article props.

One final thought, it’s worth noting that Sendek was well-regarded enough coaching circles for him to land another job at a major conference. I’m hoping that’s the case w/ Lee, but I have serious doubts about that.

  18. Wolf Dog 04/22/2009 at 8:43 AM #

I think our coaching search nailed Fowler’s respect level. Played, coached, chaired the NCAAT committee. You think he would have made some connections enough to have some coaches lined up to work for him and let us pay them a bunch of money. That was not the case though.

  19. BJD95 04/22/2009 at 8:44 AM #

Here’s two possible inferences that you should NOT take from this article (because they are not true):

    1) Fowler is safe for now.

    2) The April 2 rumblings were just unfounded rumors.

These are meant more as clarifications than criticisms of the article. We understand why the ACCSJ would have trouble getting people on the record (even anonymously) to publish something more definitive.

  20. Classof89 04/22/2009 at 8:52 AM #

    ^
Understood BJD, the fact that a “mainstream” media outlet (note the quotes) choose to run something on the story speaks volumes, even if the story itself doesn’t really contain new information…

  21. Noah 04/22/2009 at 9:07 AM #

The ACCSJ ran exactly what they *could* confirm. There was a big wave that shook everyone up and there hasn’t been a presser to announce that Lee Fowler has been drawn and quartered and his head is not sitting on a pike at the city walls.

  22. Thinkpack17 04/22/2009 at 9:20 AM #

“The wrestling team seems to be one of the few programs that is showing signs of promise.”

And we have the best wrestler in college right now. He will be the Cullen Jones of 2012.

  23. howlie 04/22/2009 at 10:06 AM #

I saw the article and was very disappointed with Peeler for writing it.
I felt like it missed the mark/ by 1,000 miles.

The ‘point’ he was attempting to make–it seemed to me–that there WERE two ‘factions’ of State fans; and these same two ‘factions’ will, hereafter, and heretofore, always war with one another. The “problem” for NC State is the lack of a unified fan base–Peeler says.

Rather, State fans (a number ever growing across a decade) saw Sendek “plateauing” and stagnating–and after calling him on it, he decided to leave.
Likewise, State fans (a number ever growing across a decade) watched the person at the helm of all athletics for State go to sleep on the job and sink the entire athletic fleet in the Atlantic [Coast Conference]. From this, Peeler does NOT infer that State fans want SUCCESS and are ready for it–but rather, that the State fanbase is the problem.

Fowler must have ghost written his article for him while Peeler was on vacation.

  24. grizzlyman 04/22/2009 at 10:32 AM #

The first half of the article is a misread and misrepresentation of NC State fans. I don’t think that many people are saying “look how well Herb is doing, look at how bad we’re doing.” Herb left, he’s gone, I wish him well, but do not miss him, I don’t think many people do.
The second half misses too. I think most fans agree the entire Athletic Dept is not performing well at all to put it softly. Fowler is the face and leader of the Athletic Dept. He has had a decade to improve on field results. He has not, he has done the opposite. You can find the numbers and stats to track the results during his watch on this great site. I see it that, few people care about what Sendek does or are jealous of his success or lack there of. And almost everyone agrees that changes in to be made at the top in the Athletic Dept. Sadly, I don’t think there is enough of a push from power players to make anything happen.

  25. CStanley 04/22/2009 at 11:24 AM #

The only reason Herb Sendek is still a topic of discussion around here is because Sidney Lowe sucks. That’s it. If we had just continued to roll along, win that tournament a couple of years ago when we made our run, etc. you would never hear from Herb again. He is the most talked about mediocre coach I’ve ever seen.

Agree with the sentiments on the article, they ran and said what they could.

And Howlie, I didn’t interpret the article the way you did. I think he’s calling out the extremists who make asses out of themselves, while he leaves out the middle ground fans (the silent majority), leaving it up to interpretation for what they do and don’t support. I can admit Sendek is a good coach, but I’m also glad he’s gone and think it’s time Lee hit the road as well.
