Spring Game

I am out of town, but eager to hear the observations of SFN readers who do attend. Please post your thoughts below.

RALEIGH, NC – The Kay Yow Spring Football game drew 21,075 fans on Saturday afternoon to watch the White team win 10-7 over the Red team. The event raised over $28,000 for charity. Fans who packed Carter-Finley stadium on Saturday afternoon might have been expected a dual between First-Team All-ACC quarterback Russell Wilson and highly-touted freshman Mike Glennon.

Sorry about thread hijacking, but I just watched the last 10 minutes of the Jordan-Brand High School All-Star basketball game, and John Wall was unbelieveable! Lightening quick, ankle-breaker cross-over dribble, leaps out of the building, excellent passer. Outside shot is the only weakness that I saw. I know that our chances on signing him are slim to none at this point, and I know he is probably one and done, but tonight’s performance changed my mind completely. I would love for him to come to State for one or two years. He is a program changer, if his attitude is good.
Good work by the football team today. TOB is a class act and he is building a class program. Go Pack.

COWDOG, I wasn’t there, never played any type of athletics at NCSU, but I do know that empty feeling that you’re expressing there. It’s years of hope upon hope, that always gets dashed to the ground, and stomped on like a roach. That empty feeling must be multiplied exponentially for someone who poured their heart out while once participating in athletics FOR NC State University.

What can we say, not a single one of them up there, they just don’t have it within their bodies to make ANYTHING seem special.

I’ve said it before, but could you possibly imagine what their kid’s birthdays are like? Slap a Food Lion Brand cake on the table, blow out the candles, and call it a day. What a nothing bunch of simple minded dullards that inhabit those West Raleigh offices in this day and age.

Yes, I did play OL (not college level) so I may be uninformed, but by no means ignorant.

If our run blocking scheme is that complicated, then maybe it will take some time. I just did not see any run blocking at all today.

Overall, decent pass protection, but zero run blocking.

I also enjoyed the crowd and look forward to the fall.
We just need to get the OL going so we can have a running game. We have had a lot of decent backs in the last several years, but not much of a running attack. This is suppose to be TOB’s specialty, so I would like to see it happen this year. Otherwise, we won’t have the balance needed to win 7, 8+ games.

Thanks for the explanation Wolfdog. I take your experience there to mean that, every gray cloud of impending gloom and doom, those dark and dreary clouds that weigh you down and sap every good thought while ripping the life right out of your mind and body, those abundantly negatively charged gray clouds can actually have a some kind of a silver lining behind them after all?

Did I get that right Wolfdog? Or did I over simplify the entire situation, once again?

  5. TheCOWDOG 04/18/2009 at 9:51 PM #

    Red, and all,
Not sayin’ it’s all bad…but and ya’ll listen to me if you will for one last time.

State promotes 2nd class and the majority accepts it. Pavlove’s dog.

Not the kids that play here, not the coaches that coach here.

In the end, it is the herd that somehow accepts being trappled and or shit on first.

How else can I explain what I saw today, with a good team presenting and an enthusiastic crowd representing only to be treated like the next one in line for market?

What’s worse is the fact that so many are ready to enter the corral.

The treatment of State’s cattle today was wrong.

Ironic that my path to and from the game was via old Reedy Creek.

All gone within 2 yrs. The big Brahmas, Longhorns…no mas…goats….sheep…horses…New buildings.

    Covered no less.

  6. Noah 04/18/2009 at 9:53 PM #

Who would expect anything else from Wolf Dog? A wonderful day for Kay Yow’s legacy, for the NCSU fan base…and he makes it about himself.

    Puuuure class.

  7. Noah 04/18/2009 at 9:59 PM #

BTW, for those who spent the day pissing and moaning about what WASN’T available…you should feel free to park your rears on the couch next year.

There were about 20,000+ that managed to have a great time.

    Sucks to be you.

  8. redfred2 04/18/2009 at 10:14 PM #

“State promotes 2nd class and the majority accepts it. Pavlove’s dog.”

Cowdog, that’s what I have said about these BB fans who brag about “never complaining once while Sendek was here”. There are people right here on this site who toe the line in regard to the administration’s holier than thou, and 2nd rate thinking, and they turn around and then blame a single coach, or a few players, for not being able to quickly rise above all of the nothingness inwhich the NCSU administration has provided for them to accomplish their jobs.

I can’t get over the fact that NC State’s athletics have sucked from top to bottom for years upon years now, and yet many fans want to jump up and blame one person when things get worse. It would be funny, if it wasn’t such a complicated and absolutely ridiculous mess.

  9. redfred2 04/18/2009 at 10:16 PM #

Hey wait Cowdog, I was busy typing, but I swear I just heard one of Pavloff’s dogs barking off in the distance somewhere.

Look Cowdog, as long as TOB is coaching the team, you will make your unnecessary hike to the john, AND YOU WILL LIKE IT!!! GOT THAT MISTER?

Just ask Noah, he’ll tell ya.

  10. Noah 04/18/2009 at 10:18 PM #

Yeah, this site’s TOTALLY behind the administration alright. In fact, that’s why it was created!

Good job. You cracked the code.

  11. TheCOWDOG 04/18/2009 at 10:19 PM #

Dude….my ass is parked as close to the keyboard as your’s.

    But not for long.

  12. phillypacker 04/18/2009 at 10:20 PM #

I am not following this discussion. State’s athletic department is in terrible shape which is one reason why we are all rejoicing about just how good the football team looks. I am also newly hopeful about women’s basketball. Could you be more specific about the “treatment of state’s cattle?” I have no idea what you people are talking about?

  13. Noah 04/18/2009 at 10:25 PM #

Phillypacker — It’s easy. A handful of people are throwing tantrums.

Afterall, we can’t blame Fowler or Fowler’s Folly. So why not piss on a perfectly good Spring Game?

  14. Noah 04/18/2009 at 10:29 PM #

And to return our topic away from those tantrums…don’t worry about the OL.

The defensive coaches deliberately threw everything they could muster at them to see how they’d react. It was hardly indicative of how they’ll play come the fall.

  15. TheCOWDOG 04/18/2009 at 10:36 PM #

Philly…I’m afraid that Noah’s got it right
    with the quick ‘splain.

From my post up top, ya had to be there from a sheppard’s perspective.

It ain’t the meat it’s the motion. (notion)

  16. redfred2 04/18/2009 at 10:39 PM #

phillypack, NC State itself, cannot or properly welcome a new team, an old team, a new coach, or stands full of loyal fans, or ever do anything but fall short of properly providing something MORE than what is justly deserved.

They can’t do it, they do not have the vision and they lack any imagination that is necessary to overachieve JUST ONCE!!!

Oh yeah, I believe Cowdog said “a group” decided not to particpate, so it wasn’t all about just him.

  17. Noah 04/18/2009 at 10:47 PM #

Yes, it was truly a HORRIBLE day. Poor us.

BTW, continuing to hear good things about our recruiting efforts this weekend.

  18. redfred2 04/18/2009 at 10:48 PM #

Noah, you are probably right about the game itself.

So can I take it that since you took it upon yourself to call wolfdog out, that you yourself, aren’t going to be unnecessarily “pissin’ on” anything around here anymore?

    I didn’t think so.

  19. TheCOWDOG 04/18/2009 at 10:57 PM #

Redman….you’re all good, but the fact that we didn’t get out of our seats was probably more comfort than protest so ya’ll know.

But, my group is spoiled ass Holtz ….and so ya know, we hated him as much as we loved him. We did like winning.

  20. redfred2 04/18/2009 at 11:16 PM #

Uh wolfdog, I’m thinking Holtz’s job was to produce FB players who “did like winning”. So I’m pretty certain that Lou Holtz wasn’t losing sleep fretting about whether or not everyone liked him while he was doing his job.

  21. redfred2 04/18/2009 at 11:21 PM #

“Yeah, this site’s TOTALLY behind the administration alright. In fact, that’s why it was created!

Good job. You cracked the code.”

If that comment was meant for me, I didn’t say or imply anything about “this site”. That is, unless you’ve recently purchased a share of its stock.

Beautiful day. Wonderful crowd, Excellent completion of Spring Practice. Boring scrimmage. Great day to be in C-F Stadium getting in condition to sit (or stand) through 60 minutes of Wolfpack football. Great Day to be a Wolfpacker. While I am not prone to predictions, I am optimistic that the potential is there to win a hell of a lot more than we lose. Now that’s an up-stat.
    `
I’ve been coming to Spring games a long time. Never have I seen such a crowd. Wasn’t it double last year’s? What was it that was so terrible? If all you heard was grumbling, perhaps you sat with the wrong people. Everyone around me was having a great time. C’Dog, sorry you couldn’t find a place to piss. Did you try the main RR under the West stands?
    `
Having twice as many customers as you expected is one of the best problems you can have. If about 10,000 had showed, the fuh-cilities would have been about right.
    `
As far as the actual play was concerned, I was bored. And damn glad of it. Didn’t learn much about NCSU football, eh? Do you think anybody watching who could use the information, learned anything. Practices are closed for a purpose and it not just to keep interested Wolfpackers in the dark.
    `
As someone above wrote, “guys are playing new postions and with different people so that coaches can see how they fit. Wayne Crawford played center for the white team and he converted to center from d-line this spring. He is still learning the system and learning how to play OL. RJ Mattes was playing Guard instead of tackle and Julian Williams has converted from tackle to guard”
    `
    I can imagine this exchange,
Player, “Coach, I can’t tell what in the heck we’re trying to do.”
Coach, “Well Son, do you think Chief Davis and his scouts could tell what we we’re trying to do?”
Player, “Ugh, Oh. Ha, haha, hahahahahah… Alright, Coach!! Let’s go have some fun and nobody’s going to get hurt either.”
    `
While the actual play was a little boring — tag football usually is unless you are playing — The signs are there that the offense will do just fine. The defense — there’s not much reason to hide the athleticism of your defense because you game plan and prepare for each opponent — is going to be a lot deeper than ever before. Depth was the difference in winning and losing often enough last year.
    `
My only real hope is that by November 28th we will be kicking ass and taking names. I’d like 42-13 to look like a nail-biter. There are some arrogant bastards about 28 miles west of here that desperately need a little humility. TOB, The Humili-nator, is my candidate for the job. I am I the only one who senses he really doesn’t like baby blue-clad football teams?
    `
Thanks to everyone who shared their opinions and observations. Predicted records are a good way to get a sense of people’s overall assessments. Thank those that offered and put their ass on the line. I predict 14-0 and an NC but I’m not betting the farm on it. 😉

Mr. Grey :” C’Dog, sorry you couldn’t find a place to piss. ”

I did say civilived, which has taken many years. And am still in training.

Do we need to pull out a ban hammer for people that continuously ignore our repeated requests to not fire off personal attacks in the Commentarium? I’m REALLY getting tired of repeating over and over and over the same thing: NO PERSONAL ATTACKS.

Supposedly you are all adults. Try acting like it. If that statement crawls up your rear end and is eating at you, then I probably DO mean you.

If you want to do that, there are any number of monkey board for y’all to play keyboard commando games on.

I will be damned if I will allow the best discussion forum for NC State sports to be ruined by folks carrying out personal vendettas. End of story.
