Wolfpack recruits dominate Georgia All-State Team

Tip of the hat to Pack Pride for the following video of NC State commit, Ryan Harrow. Friends of mine in Georgia told me at the end of the season that Ryan Harrow was the best player in the State of Georgia not named Derrick Favors this past season.

Georgia’s All-State Basketball team has been announced and the first team includes three of NC State’s prized recruits over the next two years.

Someone asked about the remaining scholarships…there is a 7-1 kid from Australia that we are recruiting. The last thing I heard on him was that we were not the favorites. I have absolutely no idea how good this guy is.

Looking at the rankings, Brown is rated as the #43 player in the country and Howell as the #51.

The only reason I mention that is to remind people not to be disappointed if they aren’t necessarily program-changing players from Day One.

They’re GOING to get playing time simply because there isn’t anyone else.

Looking at other players in the last decade or so that were ranked in that area…

From the class of 1997 –

Charlie Bell – Averaged about nine points a game for Michigan State

    From the class of 1998

Will Solomon – Comparable size, position, ranking and going to another ACC team…he averaged a little over six points a game as a frosh. He played 25 minutes a game, so he was playing a lot.

Sam Clancy – ranked right around the same place Howell is. Same position, size, and also was going to a program that needed an infusion of talent. He averaged five and five as a rookie.

From the class of 1999, Cliff Crawford is ranked where Lo Brown is. That’s about where Kirk Hinrich was ranked too (he averaged about five assists as a rook).

Matt Bonner was ranked about where Howell is ranked and averaged about five points a game.

  5. Noah 03/29/2009 at 9:24 PM #

From the ’04 class, Josh Shipp is a pretty comparable player. He put up almost 10 ppg.

  6. choppack1 03/29/2009 at 9:27 PM #

I’m thinking Brown will play 2G for us, w/ CJ @ the 3.

Regarding Howell, I am not counting on him being a starter this year, but hopefully, he’ll contribute.

We won’t have a bad starting 5 if there is no drama left for this team – Smith, Horner, CJ, Javi and Brown is a respectable group w/ Howell, Woods, Thomas and Mays coming off the bench.

  7. Noah 03/29/2009 at 9:27 PM #

This is the guy from Australia…

I’m thinking Brown will play 2G for us, w/ CJ @ the 3.

That would probably make for a much easier transition.

  9. choppack1 03/29/2009 at 9:36 PM #

Noah – I think that the Javi we saw the 2nd half of the season can compete w/ any PG in the conference. Whether we’ll see that again next year – either due to injury, playing time or whatever – who knows…

Are we certain that Howell would start? I thought Horner had shown a lot of improvement by the end of this season.

  11. Wolf Dog 03/29/2009 at 9:42 PM #

It is anticipated that Brown will qualify. To state that we will not be in the ballpark if he doesn’t is absurd!

Leslie didn’t say he wouldn’t end up going to State. He committed early and wants to look around. This type of thing is pretty common.

With coaching changes many recruits will be reevaluating their decisions.

Are we certain that Howell would start? I thought Horner had shown a lot of improvement by the end of this season.

Assuming that he’s here, I think Brown is the more likely to start.

To state that we will not be in the ballpark if he doesn’t is absurd!

Which is why no one “stated” it. The “in the ballpark” comment had to do with his grades.

Questions about Brown’s commitment (or lack thereof)to NC State first showed around the time that word came of CJ Leslie’s decommitment (early January).

I’m ready to see what Lowe does with our lineup next year. We’ve got no choice but to try and be quick, ’cause we ain’t gonna be big. So, let’s see if up-tempo can help some of these freshmen get going and let some of their natural talent go to work. “Systemizing” (for lack of the appropriate term) would probably keep freshmen a little bit down in the box score as opposed to letting them loose a bit. That said, bring on the turnovers, you know the young ‘uns will throw it to the wrong jerseys a few times.

  14. Greywolf 03/29/2009 at 10:27 PM #

“This is a good crew coming in. Now let’s see how well that the coaching staff develops them.”
    `
The concensus here is to give Lowe one more year and if he doesn’t win the national championship (sarcasm) or something, he’s done. According those who will not tolerate Lowe being here, we’ve got one year to develop them.

BJD: Pure hyperbole. Absolutely nobody has asked for a test more rigorous than making the NCAAT. Top 65.

I thought Lowe did a pretty fair job of developing Williams, May, Gonzo, Smith and Horner. Not so good with Costner, Fells, Fergie, and McCauley, although I had no issue with Ben’s hustle this past year, I didn’t see any appreciable development.
    `
The thread us closed where some were touting the previous coach over Lowe — previous was “decent” and Lowe was “shitty.” In the first 3 years, the difference between “decent” (53-44) and “shitty” (51-46) was was less than a win per season. The conference records are identical at 15-33. I’d say that’s too close to call “decent” and “shitty”. The previous coach is consistantly referred to as a good coach and Lowe is consistantly referred to here as a bad coach. Given the first 3 years won/loss record I suggest that the evaluations of Lowe are subjective at best.

BJD: No, you’re just being extremely selective. Three NIT bids in Sendek’s first 3 years, compared to one for Lowe. And Sendek was under considerable pressure to deliver more than that in Year Four.

Interestingly enough, V’s conference record for his 10 years here was 71-69 — one win over a very mediocre 500. I don’t have Robinson’s conference record for the first 3 years, although, I expect it was pretty miserable. Since we have Robinson’s first year conference records let’s compare the 4 coaches after Sloan and Maravich. V’s 4-10, R’s 8-6. S’s 4-12, L’s 5-11. Interestingly enough to me, V and Sendek had the worst records, followed by Lowe and Robinson, who had the only respectable first year conference record.
    `
All this goes to show that records can be deceiving.
    `
Gene, You stated in an earlier thread that “Sloan and Maravich, who had success in their tenures here – especially Sloan, who brought us back from irrelevance…”
    `
Maravich took over for a cancer striken Everett Case, completed that year and the next before leaving for LSU. Sloan took over and was great before Willis Casey ran him off to Florida. But between 1946 and 1964 Coach Case won 10 conference championships. TEN, not 2 or 3, but 10. The first 6 of those 10 CCs were in a flippin’ row. He was ACC Coach of the Year 3 times. Maravich didn’t do shit. Sloan was one of our best as you indicated. I’d suggest that you find someone over 60 to bring you up NC State College’s illustrious early history before you make any more ridiculous comments about our being irrevelent before Maravich.

Gene, You stated in an earlier thread that “Sloan and Maravich, who had success in their tenures here – especially Sloan, who brought us back from irrelevance…”
    `
The rest of the ludicrous statements here on SFN are not on the scale with that one. Since I got you so perturbed you decided to comment on my statements in another thread, I’ll summarize my response here.

NCSU got bitch-slapped hard for the recruiting violations of the Moreland kid, in the 1950’s. Combined with the point shaving some of our players participated in, in the late 1950’s and 1960’s, we sucked at the end of the Case era. Maravich won an ACC title taking over for the cancer stricken Case, which was based on emotion and guts to win one for Case before he passed on. Otherwise we weren’t contending for much of anything in the 1960’s. A bad coaching hire after Maravich and we may never have become a good basketball program agian. Sloan doesn’t get enough credit for turning things around. He walked into a deteriorating program, at NCSU.

Hope Brown qualifies. He and Harrow are very close from what I’ve read. If Brown goes, I hope it doesn’t have a domino effect on Harrow, who hasn’t signed an LOI.

Just a side note on recruiting and what Rivals has to say on John Wall (Not that we have much chance anyway)

The Latest: Wall ready to meet with Coach K — 3/29/2009

“John Wall has been waiting for the opportunity to meet with Mike Krzyzewski since the early days of December, and on Sunday he will have his opportunity to do exactly that”

Not trying to steal this thread but I have not seen any updates on how Spring Practice is going. Does anyone have any information? Sorry, but I am desperate for some FB news. Time to move on the the sport (major sport) where we still have hope for a big year.

Well, trying to get back to the original topic… I’m excited about these guys coming in. As Alpha said, we have some pretty good players, now lets see what Lowe can do with them. And he’ll have my support. i want this program to succeed more than anything.
and remember, you do have to crawl before you walk so i’m not expecting these new guys coming in to carry our team to the final for. i just want to see them have productive minutes and GET BETTER as the year goes on. Its all about progress at this point. Our guys that have been here a year or two that have shown flashes of ability (williams, smith, mays) should continue to get better and better, thats what i’m looking for from Lowe. i think he has the talent and athletic ability in his guys to get to the dance next year. Hopefully they’ll make it happen.

    GO STATE

A little off topic here but i heard on espn radio coming in this morning that calipari is interested in the kentucky job. If that were to come about do you think that would help our chances of with Wall?

also, i saw last night that Seth Curry is headed for the blue devils. FYI

A spring practice thread would be an excellent idea. There’s a lot of good news.

Hey Noah, another guy around the 50ish ranking is currently playing for us, Tracy Smith. Nolan Smith at Duke is another 50ish player who had to battle 7 McDonalds All Americans for PT. James Johnson and Jeff Teauge are examples of 40-70th ranked guys who did pretty well as Freshmen.

  23. com state10 03/30/2009 at 8:14 AM #

Quick question, if Calipari goes to UK…what happens to his recruits?! I know they are freed from their commitment, but do they typically follow the coach? Or rarely? Seems to be a good time for this to happen with the pack competing against Memphis for several guys right now…

I was only referring to players as true freshmen. Correct me if I’m wrong, but the two Smiths didn’t get off the bench much as a rookies.

You’re right about the Wake guys doing well. Hopefully, Brown and Howell will have similar impacts.

Regarding Calipari and his recruits, it sounds like they will be following him to UK. DeMarcus Cousins (I think) didn’t even visit here.
