U2 Playing at Raleigh “Stadium” on Saturday Oct. 3rd (Maybe Not)

This morning U2 released the dates to their 2009 world tour. It looks like U2 will be playing in Raleigh at a “Stadium” on Oct. 3rd. A quick check of the NC State Football Schedule shows that the Wolfpack will playing in Winston Salem.

    cool.

    when i was at State, The Joshua Tree was still one of my top 3 tapes– a few yrs old already (Rattle and Hum was probably a bit more contemporary), but nonetheless, i lived off it.

    They played up here at Fordham in the Bronx free the other morning for students and faculty. I think it was on the today show or one of the other network morning shows.

    Athletics department must be hurting financially this year…when the Rolling Stones played Carter-Finley back in the day (anyone remember the year? Seems like it was one of the Mike O’ Cain years), they never could get the field back in decent shape for the rest of the season that year…hope they do a better job protecting the field AND that it doesn’t rain that day.

    I saw Pink Floyd at Carter-Finly back in 94 or 95. It was a pretty good concert.

    I saw Floyd, the Stones, Paul McCartney, and The Who all in CF back in the 90’s. All four of those shows were Awesome.

    I’m sure the U2 “Show” will be unbelievealbe in CF as well, but I’m sure Bono will probably be sporting a UNC cap on stage.

    Great. U2 will be playing 10 minutes from my house and I’ll get shutout. Again.

    Their entire concert tour last time sold out in like…five minutes. Ain’t no way in the world I’m paying $500 to sit in the backrow and watch ants sing U2 songs.

    The Stones played Carter Finley in Fall 89 – Sheridan Era. I’d been in college for about a week when that happened.

    I spent eight hours on the phone trying to get tickets for that Stones show. And got shutout.

    Missed the Who because of calendar conflicts. Missed the 1987 PF show, but did get to see the 1994 Division Bell tour.

    Honestly, stadium shows suck. But U2 would be worth it. It’s not like you’re going to see them at a club anyway.

    I sat on the sixth row for the Stones. Right beside a drop dead gorgeous single female that had driven down from West Virginia with 3 of her girl friends and whom had managed to sneak in a bottle of West Viginia,’s finest Kentucky Bourban. Needless to say I had one fine time.

    Wait until the week of the show and scan Craigslist.

    Good point but not always true…The Pink Floyd Animals Tour couldn’t have fit inside an arena and was an awesome show. Nor did their concert at the Brandenburg Gate — though technically not a stadium concert, it may as well have been, considering there were 350,000 people there.

    On the other hand, we saw the Wailers Saturday night in the Carolina Theatre in Greenbsboro. Even though it may as well have been a tribute band because only one remaining Wailer is in the band, and the singer was white (GTFO!) the venue made it a great show.

    I am surprised that they will be at Carter-Finley considering that per the Asheville Wolfpacker Club meeting last week, the turf will be torn up after the spring game and redone with less of a crown, all in time for the visit from South Carolina on Sept. 3.

    If I were TOB, I would be concerned about what could/will happen to the playing surface.

    The performance of a stadium gig shouldn’t be any different than the performance at a club date. But the concert experience for the fan is what sucks.

    It’s why I wouldn’t step foot inside Walnut Creek ever again. You pay huge service charges, the sound sucks, 2/3 of the people end up watching the concert on TV, the security is awful and the food and beverage prices are awful.

    Calling that place an “amphitheater” is like calling a crackwhore a “social services employee.”

    The Greek in LA and Berkeley, the Frost in Palo Alto, the Beacon in NYC, the Fox in Atlanta, Deer Creek in Indy, Merriweather Post north of DC…those are concert venues.

    But I imagine I’ll still try to get U2 tickets.

    U2 canceled there last show for C-F and blamed it on stage problems.

    I still have my ticket stub. That concert was scheduled during the summer and I am not even sure if it was sold out.

    Noah, I couldn’t agree with you more.

    The OLD Red Rocks in Denver was like the list you mentioned as well. ‘Course they ruined it so more people could get in, but that’s the modern music scene, I guess (sigh.)

    Yeah, I forgot about Red Rocks. I didn’t realize they had altered it. Didn’t U2 record and shoot “Under a Blood Red Sky” there in 1985?

    I mentioned this conversation to a buddy of mine. He said that one band that puts on a MUCH different show in a small setting is the Rolling Stones. He saw the “Stripped” acoustic shows back in the mid-90s and he’s seen every Stones stadium tour since 1981. He said that Jagger in a stadium is almost like a Kabuki character. But in a small setting, he’s much more reserved and, in his opinion, much more entertaining.

    I saw The Stones and The Who shows there as well as The Grateful Dead back in 1990. They were all really great. I still have a tape of The Dead show. It was really wild with all the rain. I think the power with out right before the end of the first set.

    Yep. The power died during “Promised Land” and when they restored power, they started back on the very note they ended with.

    That was Brent Mydland’s last tour.

    From everything I have heard on this concert- its destined to be in Durham.

    I may be wrong, but I dont think TOB would allow U2 to come in and destroy his brand new field! ABBA on the other hand… 😉

    I have always wanted to visit RedRocks. Nine Inch Nails always puts on GREAT shows there. I never realized it has changed over the years either. How so?

    Fifteen. I was a much bigger Allman Brothers fan for a long time (saw them more than 50 times).

    The C-F show was pretty weak when you consider the entire tour. The RFK show on 7/12 was an absolute monster (even with the rain). The Deer Creek Shows were excellent.

    Speaking of rain and power outages, I saw the Jeff Beck/Carlos Santana tour in 1995. A thunderstorm knocked out power during the beginning of Santana’s set. The drummers kept going all through the outage while they tried to get power back. It was about 10 minutes of nothing but the drums. Terry Bozio was playing with Jeff Beck and he even wandered out to add his dash of weirdness to the mix. When the power came back on, Santana took off right where he had stopped.

    For those of y’all who asked, my step-brother lives out there and he said that they have renumbered the seats to squeeze (literally) a lot more people into Red Rocks and that even for the average-sized person it is a really tight fit nowadays. I understand where he is coming from, Kenan Stadium did the same thing and about every NASCAR track in the country that existed before NASCAR got to be really popular did the same thing.
