Alpha: Toney Baker Is 2009 Football’s X-Man

One of the more heralded football recruits in recent memory to make their way to West Raleigh is certainly Toney Baker. The Jamestown, NC player was a consensus All-American, and it was the Army All-Star game on national television that Toney did the hat dance where he ultimately donned the red and white cap with a Block-S on it. At the time it felt natural that Baker would achieve all-star status and lead the Wolfpack program into a post-Philip-Rivers era of consistent bowls contention for conference championships.

It didn’t work out that way.

NC State football fell into a swoon. Chuck Amato was fired. And, Toney Baker suffered a devastating knee injury inthe first game of the 2007 season against Central Florida. Baker has since missed effectively two full seasons while undergoing two knee surgeries. Baker has remained in college throughout, done everything asked of him by his rehab trainers and by the Wolfpack staff. Today, all accounts from NC State indicate that Baker’s perspective that he is ready to go is accurate.

“The way I feel running now and the way I felt then is completely different. In my mind, I felt like it was time, but maybe it was just a little too early. But sitting out and waiting last season, I can really feel the difference.””

If Baker returns to form, he will share backfield duties with Jamelle Eugene, the versatile Wolfpack running back that was an after thought when he joined the program. Eugene is missing spring practice because of a shoulder injury, and as a result, Baker will get plenty of repetitions in the spring. He’s splitting time with redshirt freshman Brandon Barnes and true freshman James Washington III, the next generation of Wolfpack backs, leaving Baker as the “old man” on the squad — albeit a talented “old man” who is itching to get back to form and back on the sod of Carter-Finley Stadium carrying the ball for the Pack. He’s also excited to be playing with Russell Wilson, the talented NC State quarterback:

“It has changed a lot having him as quarterback,” Baker said. “There is somebody on defense who will have to account for Russell Wilson on every play, and that will open up the running game. The fact that he can throw the football will open it up even more.”

Analysis: If Baker comes back as healthy and strong as he was pre-injury, he will add a potent weapon to Dana Bible’s offense and provide some much-needed depth in the running back corps. Helping carry the load of running duties with Jamelle Eugene will keep both of them stronger during games and throughout the course of the season, and also allow Brandon Barnes to come in as a lightning-fast change of pace back that can break a game wide-open late.  Fresh legs in the fourth quarter can mean victories, and having three strong backs will give you not only that, but will also help avoid a major dropoff should one of them be injured and miss some playing time.  In short, a healthy and productive Baker can mean nothing but good things for a Wolfpack offense that is designed to control the clock and time of possession of the opposition.

Graham’s thing is just some GYST-stuff.

  2. Thinkpack17 03/30/2009 at 1:49 PM #

I hear Graham is messin around in the classroom. Brown got sat down last spring for the same thing, let’s hope Graham responds like Brown did.

Think, I hope that Graham gets his act together scholastically if that’s the case. TOB has little patience for that, and besides, young TJ needs to realize that his degree, no matter what it is in, will serve him well through the years.

I’m looking forward to seeing a record crowd at the spring game.

If you want to know the Catch-22 of being a State fan – you need to look no farther than our spring game.

We have by far, the biggest spring game in the state. While this is kind of like having the biggest midnight basketball practice in the state of Florida or Texas, the game itself draws a respectable crowd.

There is very little marketing involved – before or after the fact.

There is very little done by the university or Wolfpack club to draw bigger crowds.

The university routinely instead of trying to overestimate or even err on the side of positive optimism, underestimates (IMHO) the attendance.

Finally, the cameras are set up on the same side as the fans. The nightly news coverage shows highlights – typically attended by at least 10K a year and one pretty full side of red-clothed fans – shows nothing but empty bleachers ON THE SIDE WITHOUT FANS.

I’ve said it before – I kind of understand why you want to keep this game a secret. After all, if we start advertising that we have the biggest spring game in North Carolina, the Tar Heels and the Pirates are likely to start a marketing war and from what I can tell, we’re ill-equipped to win it.

Still – more could be done from the grass roots side of things to market the game – and create highlights that show a stark contrast to the other spring games in our state.

I do think the Kay Yow tribute is a step in the right direction. Hopefully, they’ll use this as a sprigboard – that when coupled w/ some success on the field – will lead to NC State putting on one of THE events for the spring – and hopefully create so much momentum that we can brag about this and not have to worry about the Heels and Pirates surpassing our attendance w/ a little effort.

I debated putting this in its own article, but only two thousand people made it to the Carolina Spring Game.

It was the day before their Elite 8, but they are using that as an excuse.

  6. Noah 03/30/2009 at 2:40 PM #

They couldn’t go to the spring game because the NEXT day there was a basketball game?

    Help me out here…

  7. McPete 03/30/2009 at 2:42 PM #

    Alpha,
i saw that little blurb at the end of the article in the N&O as well. I don’t know how they can use that excuse when there were bars packed (including the one i was at) with tarheel fans for the Sunday game and they clearly didn’t travel for the tournament.

I hope we can get 20K. I’ve gone three years in a row and plan to make it a fourth.

Alpha – I saw some highlights of the game – and those bleachers looked pretty empty – but as I stated earlier, our highlights look just as empty too.

They did show a hoard of kids running on the field w/ the players – a good idea probably owed to the Clemson tradition of allowing kids on the field after their fall football games.

Chop – I generally agree with your sentiment that much more could be done. However, the Wolfpack Club does have its Spring Meeting for Wolfpack Club Reps in North Carolina to coincide with the Spring game.

winning would help, so TOB is doing his part. also, don’t they do the alumni reunion over that weekend?

  11. Noah 03/30/2009 at 3:01 PM #

    yes

“There is very little done by the university or Wolfpack club to draw bigger crowds” I’m sure that Stafford is pleased about that, and is looking for ways to hold game attendance to less than 5,000 and no students.

we’re going to be stacked on offense
think about it…. at wr we’ll have spencer who had a great season this year as well as williams who did too, with our best wr from two years ago in bowens coming back, we also have tj who is solid as ever. at rb we have a former all-american, one of the best high school players of all time who will surely end his career on a great note, and Jamelle should be great as well, we’ve seen greatness from him already. Qb doesnt even need to be discussed with Russ and a great backup in glennon. George and Asa at TE. I’m not sure but i think we have all of our oline coming back so its looking like we’ll be a powerful offense and a headache for defenses this coming season

You know it eats at Butch’s ass that he is so clearly second fiddle. . .

    He NEEDS his validation.

“winning would help, so TOB is doing his part. also, don’t they do the alumni reunion over that weekend?”

That’s true – and TOB has really pushed the reunion of all the former players. I think TOB is doing the right things.

If the weather holds up we’ll have more fans at this game than TOB did while he was at BC for their game vs. Buffalo.

Any thoughts on three future games against the University of South Alabama?

I don’t see much difference between playing them and playing William and Mary. I’d rather see more opponents from BCS conferences. But if the team doesn’t stay healthy, it can be miserable to watch them against anyone.

    I’ve never heard of USA.

    `
State lost to Wm and Mary 7-6 in an otherwise good season when Earl Edwards was coaching here. In his post game interview when asked how he thought State played, Earl said “I think we handled William pretty good.” Driest sense of humor I have ever seen.
    `
I just realized TOB is the closest coach to being like Earl we’ve had since Earl retired. Both winners on and off the field.

    ^^
good grief…we’re playing a game against friggin South Alabama at their place? Have we EVER played a road game against a Sun Belt school? What do they have, pictures of Fowler committing lewd acts with a goat? How can you possibly justify a road game against a school that is starting a football team?

What’s next…a trip down to Harnett County to play Campbell? They’re starting a football team too…

  22. Greywolf 03/30/2009 at 3:57 PM #

    Alpha: that’s my plan.
    Thanks on both accounts.
Do you go to hockey games? If yes, email me.

You may get some media kudos “for doing the right thing” but that’s about it.

Would be better to play at a Ball St. if you have to.

USA is a fairly new D1 football program, as I recall.

Wolfpack football is about to turn the corner. HELL YES!

Not sure if I have been this excited since our game at OSU in which we should have won.

RW and Irving along with TOB have me looking forward to a great year.

If we could only get baskekball in line! 😉
