South Carolina Football Continues To Be a Soap Opera

NC State opens this year against South Carolina, in a game that may well set the tone for the early part of the year: get a win against an SEC opponent to open the season, and the Wolfpack has set the table to possibly go 6-0 in their first half of the year.

That in mind, I like to keep an eye on the Gamecocks, and it looks like their defensive roster and rotation may be in turmoil.  Considering that the Gamecock offense was anything but powerful last year, and that they may not see dramatic improvement this season, any problem with their D weakens their whole squad even more than normal.  Tony Barnhardt writes:

I’m starting to get a little concerned about the South Carolina defense: Six starters were set to return from a defensive unit that kept the Gamecocks in most games while the offense was doing very little. The holes created by the losses of CB Captain Munnerlyn, a player I really liked, SS Emmanuel Cook, and LB Jasper Brinkley were going to be tough enough to fill. Now DT Ladi Ajiboye, who has started 22 games, and sophomore cornerback C.C. Whitlock, who was contending for a starting spot, have now been suspended. Ajiboye, from Riverdale, Ga., was arrested and charged with marijuana possession. Whitlock is a sophomore who played in nine games last season. Coach Steve Spurrier would only say that Whitlock had not been adhering to team requirements but reports say there are academic issues involved. I think Ajiboye has a chance to eventually get back after going through a diversion program. Don’t know about Whitlock. Spurrier’s not saying.

I expect that at a minimum, Ajiboye will be back.  There are suspensions and then there are losing games, something that not even the Ole’ Ball Coach can afford to do down in Columbia. C.C. Whitlock may be another story, as grades are out of the coaches’ hands, and if he can’t get it together in the classroom, he won’t be playing in Raleigh at the end of August.  If that happens, the Wolfpack’s chances of getting an important opening game win go up at least by a little bit.

Heck, I’d take another Tulloch – he’s doing work in the NFL.

Bobby Houston could fly, but he wasn’t a big hitter. Thunder Dan could hit, but he couldn’t really run.

Manning is supposed to be a combination of the two. He just needs more experience.
    `
Noah, Thanks, it was “Bobby” Houston. My old memory ain’t what it used to be. Am I selective in remembering that nobody turned the corner on him?
    `
“He just needs more experience.” just like Robbie Leonard and #16 last year and they did alright.
Supposed to be a combination of Houston and Thunder Dan, eh? I’m starting to get a hard-on. Gotta go take a heart pill, I’m getting too excited for my own good.

I heard a very interesting take on sports radio about the ability of a football player to be great from the perspective of his intelligence and understanding of the game. I think it was on Mike and Mike, and I think it was just after the announcement of this year’s Wonderlic scores.

Golic, I believe, said that the further you get away from the ball the less intelligent a guy needs to be to be really successful. He said for instance, a linebacker (which is what we’re talking about here) can’t be “great” if he’s constantly overrunning coverages or over-pursuing and allowing his athleticism/speed to take him out of the play.

He mentioned that Bruski is not as athletic as MANY NFL LB’s who did not last long in the league, but that because he studied the game and played smart he will go down as a great Linebacker with a long tenure in the league.

USC football has always been a soap opera as has the entire athletics department.

Paul Deitzel orchestrating their exit from the ACC so they could compete for a national championship in football. (That worked out well didn’t it)

Jim Carlen having himself named athletic director in charge of everything but basketball while Frank McGuire was in the hospital.

Jim Carlen banging one of the cheerleaders.

Pam Parsons as the lesbian coach of a team called the “Lady Gamecocks” messing around with her players.

The steroid story in SI during the Morrison era.

This kind of stuff goes back for decades. Spurrier and the current cast of characters are bland by comparison.

My old memory ain’t what it used to be.

I knew what you meant. And yes, Houston had blazing speed as a LB. I believe he was the fastest linebacker in workouts before the NFL draft. The thing that knocked him out of the first round was that he wasn’t a very good tackler.

He played about 10 years in the league though.

This website just degenerated into the likes of “Inside Crakolina”. I follow both programs very closely and whether you like or hate Spurrier or South Carolina, somebody has been reading “Moron” aka Ron Morris who is a scumbag reporter for the State Newspaper who hates everything about South Carolina and loves to “stir up shit” on a constant basis.

This is the game that torments me and I’m not about to get caught into the trap of talking crap about either team. I’ll pull for both and wish that both were really playing and kicking the butt of the other “Carolina”.

Neither of those two will be that big of a loss to South Carolina. CC’s dealing with some family issues and as far as drawing comparisons to the fair haired Orange bastards of South Carolina, look into their recent history of “coverups”. Throwing your girlfriend down the stairs and beating the crap out of her gets you not even a game suspension. Getting drunk and killing someone with a jet ski gets you “no penalty”, and the saga goes on in Pickens County.

Moron or not – this year will be an interesting one for the Gamecocks. They really collapsed down the stretch last year – and now w/ some new blood at UT, well, they’ll be a little harder for USC to beat.

Good news that confirms what a lot of us have been saying.

If the DL is strong, the defense will be strong.

Don’t worry about the safety spots. The starters are going to be Javon Walker and Clem Johnson. What they’re looking for is backups.

    Noah,
Judging from what little bit I hear, sounds like we are going to be better than last year. And last year with Wilson we were pretty good. What is your overall assessment of what kind of season is possible. Maybe even a guess as to the range of wins and losses?
    `
GAWolf, “He mentioned that Bruski is not as athletic as MANY NFL LB’s”
I had a few brewskis at football games. You do mean Teddy Bruschi, right?
    `
Noah again, You have a pretty good football memory. Do you remember who the leading ball carrier was for State in 1956? Hint, His first name was Jacques and his last name was Strappe. `

Can I nominate myself to fulfill the role of wet blanket today? 🙂

I think we have many, factual reasons to be optimistic, but let’s all take a deep breath and remember – we’re NC State. Seriously – when was the last time that we lived up to high, or even semi-high pre-season expectations in anything?

Remember the 2001 season? Philip is the hot sophomore QB, we lose to the Holes and go 6-5. 2003? ‘Nuff said.

There’s a lot to like and be excited about – but I think our margin for error is VERY thin. Keep in mind that EVERY August seems to bring serious injuries to key players.

I will remain cautiously optimistic, but will temper my expectations to that level. I’ve been burned by State sports too many times to do otherwise.

^ Good point. I expect to go 8-4. I think that’s reasonable. Hope to do better. Not surprised if we do worst.
