Coaching Carousel Comments (Updated 3/18)

Wednesday, March 18th
Great conversation going on here! So, we thought that we would just elevate this entry back to the top and add this link from Jeff Goodman at Fox Sports to the mix.

He has listed the 12 coaches that could get hot and make a jump due to either their appearance – or performance – in the Big Dance. These are all non-BCS guys except the interim staff at Arizona.

First name on the list is none other than:

Sean Miller, Xavier – He’s been a commodity in the past year or two, but sources told FOXSports.com that the hefty buyout has dropped considerably. He’s done a terrific job overachieving with the current Musketeers group and should have a shot at Virginia or anything else that opens in his comfort zone.

Tuesday, March 17th
By now, you probably know how much we love the coaching carousels. This is the time when programs can be made and/or destroyed. The potential fallout of Virginia’s firing of Dave Leitao has added a layer of complexity and interest to this year’s carousel for us all as it is no secret that our own Sidney Lowe and Georgia Tech’s Paul Hewitt now enter next season as the two coaches with the hottest seats in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The following comments come from an article today from Duke graduate, Seth Davis.

We already have four openings at prominent programs: Alabama, Arizona, Georgia and Virginia. What do all of those schools have in common? They’re all big state schools. We all know these schools are facing budget crunches, but aside from Arizona, their administrations made the decisions to create these openings. I don’t think they would do that unless they were ready to throw out some big money to find replacements.

Taking Arizona out of the mix for the moment, the two biggest names that will be mentioned are Oklahoma’s Jeff Capel and Missouri’s Mike Anderson. Should Anderson be inclined to leave Missouri, Alabama would seem to be an obvious choice since he’s from the state, but Georgia has a dynamic young athletic director in Damon Evans, and many in the business believe that is the better job because there are more players in that state. I think it is highly unlikely that Capel would leave Oklahoma for Alabama or Georgia. Yes, he’s about to lose Blake Griffin to the NBA, but freshman guard Willie Warren is probably coming back, and he’ll be joined next season by two McDonald’s All-Americans. Plus, Capel works for arguably the best AD in the country in Joe Castiglione. I’m sure he is prepared to do whatever he can to keep Capel at OU.

Virginia, however, is another story. Capel grew up in Virginia, his wife is from Raleigh, and of course he played in the ACC for Duke. Virginia is a first-rate university, it has a brand new arena and an excellent recruiting base. Plus, if you finish third in the ACC, they build you a statue. It will be awfully difficult for Capel to give up the success and job security he has in Oklahoma, but if he does, this would be the kind of situation that could be worth it. So stay tuned.

If Virginia doesn’t hire Capel, I think they’ll go after Tubby Smith. Tubby, in fact, is still on Arizona’s radar screen. I think Smith would be interested in both those jobs, but I do not see him at Georgia or Alabama. A lot of people are speculating that VCU’s Anthony Grant is going to be in the mix at Georgia, but from what I’m hearing, Grant is a longshot for that job at best. I’ve also heard that USC’s Tim Floyd might be a candidate at Alabama, but I find it hard to believe he will go there. Not only did Floyd just get a commitment from Renardo Sidney, one of the best high school players in America, but he’s a low-key guy who likes nothing more than being able to walk into a restaurant and have nobody recognize him. He certainly won’t have that in Tuscaloosa.

Otherwise, I still believe the Arizona vacancy is Mark Few’s to turn down. While the decision won’t necessarily come down to money, Arizona is going to have to demonstrate a commitment to Few that goes beyond his own salary. Right now, Gonzaga flies a charter to many of its road games, and Few has the use of a private plane for his recruiting trips. For a man who is so devoted to his wife and three young children, that is no small issue. If Arizona can’t lock down Few, then I’m hearing the school is likely to go after Tubby Smith or Reggie Theus. The sleeper? UNLV coach Lon Kruger, who is familiar with that area of the country, won’t cost too much money and, most important, is a great coach who spent time in the NBA. You cannot overstate how big of an asset a pro background is with prospective recruits.

I usually try to avoid speculating on jobs that are not vacant, but unfortunately that is part of the job. That said, I can tell you that all eyes in the college basketball world are on Lexington, Ky. While it may be hard to believe that the school would get rid of Billy Gillispie after two years, I am getting indications that athletic director Mitch Barnhart could very well be moving in that direction. There is a concern that if Gillispie comes back, many of his players will either turn pro or transfer. One well-placed source told me last week that the decision to remove Gillispie was already “done.” I believe that was overstated, but Barnhart’s relative silence on this matter has been deafening. I left a message for Barnhart over the weekend and my call was returned not by him, but by an athletic spokesman, who naturally told me Barnhart had no comment on the matter. If Barnhart thinks he can wait another few weeks until Kentucky is done playing to resolve this matter, he is sorely mistaken.

(sarcasm warning)…I am just wondering who in the hell would want to coach at Kentucky? Those fans are crazy! Obviously they won’t be able to attract any good coaches after the way they have run away a National Champion in Tubby Smith and now pressured Gillispie after just two years. This is probably a lot like Indiana who ran away a great guy in Mike Davis (who took the Hoosiers to the National Championship game). Obviously, these horrible fans are ruining these once great programs. No good coaches will want to work somewhere that wants to win so badly.

well redfred, it goes something like this:

Overall TOB may be .500, but in the games that REALLY matter–you know the ones–he has been near perfect. . . Then there’s the community service, the visible work ethic, the obvious PROGRESS–i’ll say again, PROGRESS–the sense of personal responsibility to his athletes and the fans. . . I could go on for a while longer, but I don’t think I really need to. There is really no comparison between the two programs, or their respective coaches, outside of perhaps one statistic.

leave it to Alpha Wolf to furnish us some equilibrium

  3. Wulfpack 03/19/2009 at 6:12 AM #

Uhh Red, one guy has a track record of proven success and accountability at this level. The other, nothing to speak of.

You do the math. But if you don’t like numbers and think that they “lie”, then try opening your eyes.
We were not one of the 96 top teams in the country in BB this year. Can you honestly say that for the football program? I don’t think so.

  4. graywolf 03/19/2009 at 6:53 AM #

TOB had done one thing that Lowe has not : Beat Carolina. You do that consistantly at NC State and you get a shrine.

  5. kyjelly 03/19/2009 at 6:55 AM #

Take a look at Michigan please, who do you think was in worse shape two years ago the Pack or Michigan? I would say Michigan now they are in the tourney playing 3 freshmen with a coach who know’s what he is doing.
Red: Numbers do not lie. Give me an example, of Sid’s improvement, that he has a clue about coaching college basketball? This is all anything about can he coach colege basketball? Not to compare him with the former coach here or the football coach.

  6. whitefang 03/19/2009 at 7:09 AM #

TOB has a resume that includes being a successful D1 college football coach and also includes rebuilding a program. TOB has improved our football program over his predecessor. TOB’s team has beaten our natural rivals – the main one badly. TOB’s coaching staff shows that they can develop players. TOB knows where our weaknesses are and more importantly has a plan not only to fill those weaknesses, but a plan B when plan A doesn’t work.
I do not believe any of the above can be said about Lowe.
But that doesn’t mean I HATE him. He is one of our legends as a player. I respect him as such. I just don’t think he is going to be successful as a D1 college coach. Therefore I do not think it is in State’s or his long term best interest to continue to pursue the experiment.

I think we need to stop all the negativity. Everyone is so high on TOB and proclaiming him to be the savior of the football program…but have we really seen that much improvement in the football program yet? Or have we really seen Russell Wilson become a stellar college player who put the team on his back and carried us to a bowl last year? Honestly, would we be speaking so highly of what TOB has done if Wilson hadn’t simply exploded last year into being a huge playmaker? No Wilson = No chances at a bowl.

I’m not downing TOB or the football program…but stuff takes time. During football season, everyone always talks about how TOB needs to get his type of players in, and that the problem is the holdovers from the Amato regime aren’t fitting into TOB’s system. Well why can’t that be the case with Sid? I think both Football and Basketball have seen definite improvements over the past year. Sid has shown us he can develop the guys that he’s brought in. We need to be more patient and give both of these guys some time to establish their programs and succeed.

Someone said the other day he was glad to move on to baseball where at this time only WF has a worst record in the acc.Excellence in all sports is NCSU.

  9. ms termeaner 03/19/2009 at 7:37 AM #

^Stop being negative? Who has Sid developed? Where is the improvement? Examples please? He unlike TOB has not shown he has a system.
This is about Sid and “his” basketball program period. We are not talking football, herb it is about Sid. If 18 and 38 in the acc is negative than so be it that is how coach’s are judged. If 16-14 is an improvement with a 318 ooc sos than great. I see that our signature ooc W was against Lipscum(sp)so than I guess we should all be a bit positive.

  10. Noah 03/19/2009 at 8:07 AM #

Facts are though that he has less than a .500 winning percentage, his team looked like shit without ONE, or possibly two, missing elements, his season had been all but written off, and yet, THE MAN IS AN ABSOLUTE SAINT AROUND HERE!

That’s because college football schedules aren’t larded up with 12-15 absolutely bullcrap wastes of time. You play MAYBE one “gimme” game in college football. The first two months of the college basketball season are a complete wankfest.

Anytime Lowe wants to go 8-8 or 9-7 in conference, be my guest. That’s essentially what TOB did this year. You go .500 in the ACC and you’re a 20-win team and headed to the tournament. If Lowe does that, he can keep his job.

But he doesn’t do that, does he? He loses three or four of the chump games and then wins three or four ACC games. That’s the equivalent of going 3-8 in football.

And…oh yeah, we fired both Tom Reed AND Monte Kiffin after three years.

  11. Noah 03/19/2009 at 8:08 AM #

BTW, anyone who says that the ONLY improvement in football has been with Russell Wilson has not been watching our offensive line or our defense.

  12. BJD95 03/19/2009 at 8:15 AM #

I am always glad when somebody tries putting down Tom O’Brien to “defend” Sidney Lowe. That way I know who is completely batshit insane.

FACT – Tom O’Brien accomplished more in his second season than Sidney Lowe accomplished in ANY of his first three seasons.

FACT – Tom O’Brien has a proven track record, meaning no blind faith is needed.

FACT – It takes longer to build a football program than it does a basketball program (which can be turned around in one recruiting class).

FACT – Tom O’Brien took over a program that had been run into the ground by a complete buffoon.

  13. Alpha Wolf 03/19/2009 at 8:24 AM #

BTW, anyone who says that the ONLY improvement in football has been with Russell Wilson has not been watching our offensive line or our defense.

Or a renewed emphasis on N-S running by our backs (instead of parallel to the line of scrimmage.)

As a whole, the football team was fundamentally better.

  14. chapps 03/19/2009 at 8:29 AM #

I’m not putting down TOB. And I’ve seen improvement in our football team…but lets face it…without RW we had no chance at a bowl last year.

Horner’s improved, Javi improved substantially this year, Mays and Williams contributed well this year.

I like the improvement that TOB has made to the football program, and feel good about the overall direction. I’m saying I’d like to give Sidney a couple more years before I pass judgement on him.

Yall need to calm down and try not to be so hostile towards each other. We’re all on the same team here…

  15. Par Shooter 03/19/2009 at 8:37 AM #

Noah and BJD, you guys hit the nail on the head. Anyone who wants to defend Sidney by somehow critisizing TOB is nuts. There is a fundamental difference in the 2 – TOB knows WTF he is doing and Sid is trying to figure it out as he goes. It shows in both cases in so many ways.

  16. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 03/19/2009 at 8:50 AM #

Lowe isn’t being fired so why the hell do people keep trying to destroy what we do have? The season is over the coach is staying so you come on here and continue to bash the program. A site that any recruit would be reading if they wanted to get a real feel for the program.

  17. BoKnowsNCS71 03/19/2009 at 9:04 AM #

This could be as humorous as Lee Fowler’s Quixote type search three years ago.

  18. jbpackfan 03/19/2009 at 9:08 AM #

Any truth to the rumor mentioned by Noah that Sidney was trying to get his NBA job back? If he is not 100% committed to NC State, then he needs to step down voluntarily. However, I haven’t seen anything to suggest that he doesn’t want to be here.

  19. BJD95 03/19/2009 at 9:23 AM #

I’ve definitely heard that Lowe has had feelers out to the NBA.

No, I don’t think that means he should step down for not being 100% committed to NC State. But I do think it’s a pretty good comeback for those that want to put Lowe on the cross for “allowing” NC State to pay him $1M/year.

  20. whitefang 03/19/2009 at 9:27 AM #

Said before but I don’t see how you talk down a program that is at the bottom of the conference. I don’t think SFN posters are capable of destroying what we have, but in any case we don’t have much to destroy.
And recruits don’t have to read this to get a feel for the program. They aren’t stupid. They know our lack of success the last 3 years. Do you think Leslie is backing off because of SFN comments? Recruits will be watching the NCAA tournament the next few weeks where we won’t be playing again. That makes a much bigger impact than my SFN comments I feel sure.

  21. BillyTheKid 03/19/2009 at 9:28 AM #

BJD95, we all know that dropdeadredfred is batshit crazy but thanks for saying so anyway!!

  22. Noah 03/19/2009 at 9:33 AM #

To clarify…two years in a row that he’s put out feelers. Allegedly.

  23. Rick 03/19/2009 at 9:38 AM #

But is it feelers in case he gets fired or feelers so he can step down?

Surely, Fowler knows he needs to be prepared for another coaching search and is preparing.

    Snicker

  24. jbpackfan 03/19/2009 at 9:39 AM #

My take is if the guy wants an NBA job, then his heart may not be in it. We need someone who wants to be here and isn’t looking for the next big paycheck.

  25. ThomYorkepack 03/19/2009 at 9:44 AM #

Are these NBA ‘feelers’ that Lowe has allegedly has had out there for a head coaching job only or for assistant’s work?
