Coaching Carousel Comments (Updated 3/18)

Wednesday, March 18th
Great conversation going on here! So, we thought that we would just elevate this entry back to the top and add this link from Jeff Goodman at Fox Sports to the mix.

He has listed the 12 coaches that could get hot and make a jump due to either their appearance – or performance – in the Big Dance. These are all non-BCS guys except the interim staff at Arizona.

First name on the list is none other than:

Sean Miller, Xavier – He’s been a commodity in the past year or two, but sources told FOXSports.com that the hefty buyout has dropped considerably. He’s done a terrific job overachieving with the current Musketeers group and should have a shot at Virginia or anything else that opens in his comfort zone.

Tuesday, March 17th
By now, you probably know how much we love the coaching carousels. This is the time when programs can be made and/or destroyed. The potential fallout of Virginia’s firing of Dave Leitao has added a layer of complexity and interest to this year’s carousel for us all as it is no secret that our own Sidney Lowe and Georgia Tech’s Paul Hewitt now enter next season as the two coaches with the hottest seats in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The following comments come from an article today from Duke graduate, Seth Davis.

We already have four openings at prominent programs: Alabama, Arizona, Georgia and Virginia. What do all of those schools have in common? They’re all big state schools. We all know these schools are facing budget crunches, but aside from Arizona, their administrations made the decisions to create these openings. I don’t think they would do that unless they were ready to throw out some big money to find replacements.

Taking Arizona out of the mix for the moment, the two biggest names that will be mentioned are Oklahoma’s Jeff Capel and Missouri’s Mike Anderson. Should Anderson be inclined to leave Missouri, Alabama would seem to be an obvious choice since he’s from the state, but Georgia has a dynamic young athletic director in Damon Evans, and many in the business believe that is the better job because there are more players in that state. I think it is highly unlikely that Capel would leave Oklahoma for Alabama or Georgia. Yes, he’s about to lose Blake Griffin to the NBA, but freshman guard Willie Warren is probably coming back, and he’ll be joined next season by two McDonald’s All-Americans. Plus, Capel works for arguably the best AD in the country in Joe Castiglione. I’m sure he is prepared to do whatever he can to keep Capel at OU.

Virginia, however, is another story. Capel grew up in Virginia, his wife is from Raleigh, and of course he played in the ACC for Duke. Virginia is a first-rate university, it has a brand new arena and an excellent recruiting base. Plus, if you finish third in the ACC, they build you a statue. It will be awfully difficult for Capel to give up the success and job security he has in Oklahoma, but if he does, this would be the kind of situation that could be worth it. So stay tuned.

If Virginia doesn’t hire Capel, I think they’ll go after Tubby Smith. Tubby, in fact, is still on Arizona’s radar screen. I think Smith would be interested in both those jobs, but I do not see him at Georgia or Alabama. A lot of people are speculating that VCU’s Anthony Grant is going to be in the mix at Georgia, but from what I’m hearing, Grant is a longshot for that job at best. I’ve also heard that USC’s Tim Floyd might be a candidate at Alabama, but I find it hard to believe he will go there. Not only did Floyd just get a commitment from Renardo Sidney, one of the best high school players in America, but he’s a low-key guy who likes nothing more than being able to walk into a restaurant and have nobody recognize him. He certainly won’t have that in Tuscaloosa.

Otherwise, I still believe the Arizona vacancy is Mark Few’s to turn down. While the decision won’t necessarily come down to money, Arizona is going to have to demonstrate a commitment to Few that goes beyond his own salary. Right now, Gonzaga flies a charter to many of its road games, and Few has the use of a private plane for his recruiting trips. For a man who is so devoted to his wife and three young children, that is no small issue. If Arizona can’t lock down Few, then I’m hearing the school is likely to go after Tubby Smith or Reggie Theus. The sleeper? UNLV coach Lon Kruger, who is familiar with that area of the country, won’t cost too much money and, most important, is a great coach who spent time in the NBA. You cannot overstate how big of an asset a pro background is with prospective recruits.

I usually try to avoid speculating on jobs that are not vacant, but unfortunately that is part of the job. That said, I can tell you that all eyes in the college basketball world are on Lexington, Ky. While it may be hard to believe that the school would get rid of Billy Gillispie after two years, I am getting indications that athletic director Mitch Barnhart could very well be moving in that direction. There is a concern that if Gillispie comes back, many of his players will either turn pro or transfer. One well-placed source told me last week that the decision to remove Gillispie was already “done.” I believe that was overstated, but Barnhart’s relative silence on this matter has been deafening. I left a message for Barnhart over the weekend and my call was returned not by him, but by an athletic spokesman, who naturally told me Barnhart had no comment on the matter. If Barnhart thinks he can wait another few weeks until Kentucky is done playing to resolve this matter, he is sorely mistaken.

(sarcasm warning)…I am just wondering who in the hell would want to coach at Kentucky? Those fans are crazy! Obviously they won’t be able to attract any good coaches after the way they have run away a National Champion in Tubby Smith and now pressured Gillispie after just two years. This is probably a lot like Indiana who ran away a great guy in Mike Davis (who took the Hoosiers to the National Championship game). Obviously, these horrible fans are ruining these once great programs. No good coaches will want to work somewhere that wants to win so badly.

And yes, I think Gillispie would be great. He just wasn’t ready for Kentucky yet. He also fills the need for a guy who can stabilize the program and establish a defensive identity immediately.

I don’t see Arizona as a good fit for Tubby. Virginia makes much more sense.

Bobby Knight as head coach would be a disaster. He can’t recruit anymore, and is a good candidate only at schools desperate enough to need a media stunt.

I am an NCSU grad who currently resides in Louisville, KY. Before you get to worked up about Billy G., please do some research. I have heard stories (true or untrue) from a Lexington police officer about how Gillespie battles alcoholism and routinely requires escorts when leaving his office at night in order to prevent any DUI’s / negative publicity.

^I’ve heard (or seen, I guess) that story before, but never presented anywhere as fact.

“It’s not all smiles and sunshine.”

You’re quite right, sir. . . It’s very hard to see the sunshine when you’re in a RELENTLESS SHITSTORM!

    p.s.

I don’t think I would be averse to Bobby Knight coming. . . 61 has some good points.

    BJD, we’re pretty damn close.

Adventeroo, look around, look at who the worst offenders are, they’re HERB LOVERS, all of them and every single one of them.

I believe I’m the Grand High Poobah of LoweSucksville. Anyone calling me an herb lover better be talking about my college years and not referring to the guy who used to coach here.

  7. GAWolf 03/17/2009 at 8:16 PM #

This is an interesting conversation on whtaever this messageboard is. It speaks to Gillespie’s supposed alcohol issues… but even more importantly it reads just like the discussions of Sid and Herb had here.

Morehead St. moves on to play Louisville …

Speaking of Gillespie and UK, they are playing their NIT game tonight against UNLV on their old volleyball court.

I think Gillespie would be a mistake at State. I’m not sure Capel would be a good fit at UVa. It definitely offers a lot of intangibles but its not a better gig than OU.

I think Sid is still putting together the foundation for a successful long-term program. I like Sid’s offense and I think it can win a lot of games with the right horses running it and playing better defense.

  10. LRM 03/17/2009 at 8:58 PM #

Wait, are there State fans that are dissatisfied with Lowe’s job performance?

^Wolfpackforevermore and your allies: We are talking about basketball here,10,12th and 10th place finishes do tend to make basketball “fan’s” not very positive! It has nothing to do with Herb in fact the people that throw his name around here are people who continually defend and make excuses for Sid and blame all that goes wrong on Herb????
So forgive me for being negative about our basketball coach and program and I would love to here from anyone here why I should be positive?

  12. WolftownVA81 03/17/2009 at 9:06 PM #

I’m not a Herb fan, was glad to see him go. I’m also not a Sid basher. But after the last two seasons, I do feel kind of negative about the program – with just cause I believe. I’ve also tried to refrain from posting what I really felt after each game that we could have won. I will hope for the best next season but I really have no expectations. It’s on our players and coaches to demonstrates some measurable progress – that they deserve to play/get paid to coach. This season was an improvement but I sure expected more. As stated many times before on this board, Next year decides it for me.

Don’t ever mistake me for a Herb lover! I was on here ranting years ago. In fact, I’ve still got the airplane tracking software saved in “my favorites”!

“Leonard Hamilton is in his 7th YEAR at FSU…he did not have, I think, an illustrious career in the NBA.”

No, he didn’t..and he hasn’t had an illustrious career at FSU until this year. Who said that he did?

  15. JVM4PACK 03/17/2009 at 9:37 PM #

I don’t care if Wooden himself came back to coach for us…as long as we make some consistent runs in the ACCT, win a few while we are at it, get into the big dance on a regular basis, surpass the sweet 16 ceiling we have been banging our heads against for so long and if we have to mitigate a few down/transitional years to maintain being nationally ranked then so be it…

  16. Texpack 03/17/2009 at 9:43 PM #

Texas A&M only needs to get the recruits that don’t want to go to Texas out of the state and they can finish in the top 4-5 in the Big 12 every year. Texas is a very fertile recruiting ground and BG had years of connections here before leaving for Kentucky. I think it’s the first job he’s ever had outside the State of Texas. He should have stayed at A&M. He could have built a consistent top 10 program with the alumni base and the $$ available to him there. My dislike for UK stems from Rupp’s refusal to play Coach Case back in the ’50’s, before I was even born, so I can’t say I’m upset watching the Wildcats suffer a little.

wait.. didn’t we go after Lonnie Kruger? and Mike Montgomery? um..did he stop looking for experienced coaches because the # of rejections was mounting and we had to stop the bleeding (embarrassment) ? oh yea, i remember. herb left and we didn’t know what to do in a reasonable time. how unprepared is that..

BJD and others who support Gillespie: Humor me here, but help me understand why he’d be a great hire. I wasn’t sold on him during the last coaching search as he played a slow down pace and won almost all of his games by a slim margin. I actually posted some analysis on Pack Pride during the search that showed these things.

Yes, he had a winner at A&M (where basketball is seen like football at Duke), but was that a sustainable winner or the product of a couple of good recruits? Admittedly, he got good recruits there, but I wondered. I think it’s easier to build a basketball winner at A&M than many think. They’ve got deep pockets and there’s not much to do in College Station other than root for TAMU. Was that luck or was that good coaching? I watched them play and wasn’t all that impressed.

I continue to wonder based on his results at Kentucky. Are the problems there due to the talent left behind by Tubby or by Gillespie’s own doing? Yes, the recruiting had “tailed off” at Kentucky during the last few years, but they still had more talent when Tubby left than EVERY team in the SEC outside of Tennessee and possibly Florida.

Kentucky enjoyed the services this year of one of the premiere scorers in America (which suggests to me that Tubby’s recruiting wasn’t that bad). I watched Meeks several times and thought he was the best player by far in the SEC and probably one of the 5-10 best players in the country. We’re to believe that BG is a great coach yet he’s squandered a kid that good?

Take a look at the SEC this season. If you believe Pomeroy, Saragin, etc., this is the weakest a BCS conference has been in a long, long, long, long time. BG couldn’t navigate one of the weakest seasons in conference history and eek out a good enough record to get Kentucky into the tournament (despite having Meeks and top 3 talent in the conference)? Keep in mind that Kentucky is like UNC, UCLA, Duke or Kansas — they’re going to get a bid if they have anything resembling a pulse. Kentucky was blown out so much this season that the NCAA tournament committee had to omit them. That’s brutal no matter how you slice it.

I’m sure I’m missing something here, but I’ve never understood the love affair. I continue to think that there are many better candidates for NC State than BG. I cringe whenever I see posts suggesting that we should fire SL and go get Gillespie.

  21. StateFoxer 03/18/2009 at 6:02 AM #

I heard some talking head on 850 the buzz say yesterday that you need 3 stars on your roster to be a great team. That’s probably talking head garbage but the point is, UK has two lottery picks on their starting line-up and they play in a weak SEC. And they look god-awful! If we’re going to blame Sid for getting less then expected out of our mildly talented bunch, are we allowed to say in the same breath that Gillespie is the victim of circumstances?

  22. whitefang 03/18/2009 at 6:13 AM #

Wow, I round out I was a Herb lover! I thought I hated that sawed off, bald-headed, Princeton offence running f—er! Must be one of those subconscious things I never realized.

Arizona State coughed up a big lead in the PAC-10 title game last week…not that we ever saw that movie. 😉

Still no championships for the greatest coach in the history of ever.

“Arizona State coughed up a big lead in the PAC-10 title game last week…not that we ever saw that movie.”

One of these days Baldy McBoring will win a championship and we will get the joy of reading about how stupid NCSU is. Of course it might be 40 years from now but still…

  25. haze 03/18/2009 at 7:38 AM #

I wonder if you can really conclude much about the big-time prospects of any coach who had his “lower-level” success over a short time frame. More specifically, if a guy’s success is intimately associated with the top years of a particularly good PG (see TAMU), I’d be really concerned.

If I’m going to the mid-majors, I want multiple stops with success and I want to see successful seasons that were not predicated entirely on stud players, especially PG’s. Picking hot young names and hoping to find Joe Paterno is simply an overrated strategy. A mid-40’s or even a 50yr old coach with a real record can run your team for 20yrs… that’s just fine.
