RTC: Seth Curry could save Lowe’s job?

We’ve been really humming here at SFN the last few weeks as there is an awful lot of NC State Basketball news out there for a team that failed to make the NCAA Tournament. (We hope that you are passing the word to all of your friends that they need to be visiting us more often!)

  • This entry looks at the 2009-2010 Wolfpack
  • This entry highlights a lot of the roster changes and includes some fantastic analysis and conversation.

It was announced yesterday that Seth Curry, the nation’s #1 scoring freshman and Stephon Curry’s brother, plans to transfer from Liberty to seek a school where he can compete at a higher level.  Rush The Court has all that you need on the topic including some interesting analysis.

After being lightly recruited out of high school (when will scouts and college coaches learn), Curry led all freshman in scoring at 20.2 PPG. Curry has not listed any of his potential choices and college coaches are not allowed to comment on potential transfers so at the very least Seth will keep college basketball message boards abuzz for the next couple of weeks.

When you read the entry you will see the news that it appears Curry may be ACC-bound.

Any guesses on where he is headed? There are a couple interesting potential legacy destinations: Davidson (replace his brother) or Virginia Tech (his father’s alma mater–helping Seth Greenberg save some face and get in the NCAA tournament, but that bridge may have been burned). Or will Seth go to another big-name program? There are plenty of other programs that could use a guy who averaged over 20 PPG as a freshman and averaged 25 PPG on 55% FG in 2 games against ACC opponents (Clemson and Virginia) this year. I would think he would want to stay relatively close to home (Charlotte area) and be in a starring role at a place where he could take over in a year so I would think that would exclude a place like UNC or Duke, but I could see him at Wake Forest or NC State (potentially saving Sidney Lowe’s job) particularly since all of their current stars leaving by then.

RTC says the following more specifically about NC State’s program:

NC State: This would be fairly close to home and at a big-name program albeit one that has fallen a few notches since they let Herb Sendek go. This would have to be a huge addition for a program that has fallen to the #4 program in the state (possibly lower) and could save Lowe’s job.

I haven’t had any time to analyze Curry’s potential fit with the Wolfpack’s roster, although on the surface I think I would be very pleased with a de facto recruiting class in 2010 of Ryan Harrow, CJ Leslie and Seth Curry. Suddenly the Wolfpack’s roster would be very well balanced with skilled players at almost every position and the only glaring hole potentially being the need for a tall athletic wing forward (that may end up being Richard Howell if he expands his game).

JUST FOR FUN, here is how the Wolfpack’s roster COULD look:

I refused to join the Student Wolfpack Club (the pro-Les chants made me sick), but I joined the WC the day after I graduated and will almost certainly stay in until I’m dead.

That said, I am not increasing my giving anywhere near the level to be in the Top 1000, even.

  2. Packman02 03/26/2009 at 1:53 PM #

This will be the first year since graduation (2002) that I don’t renew my WPC membership. Change has to start somewhere, and money talks (even my miniscule donation amount).

  3. Noah 03/26/2009 at 1:56 PM #

This site has a track record. Noah has a track record. If they are both saying that Lowe needs to win next year or else, then that’s almost certainly accurate information.

Just to be clear, that’s the impression I’m getting (win next year or else). The two things I listed above those are facts.

  4. Greywolf 03/26/2009 at 1:58 PM #

“But if we (lowe) don’t improve from this year or we regress…it’s time to go (Lowe) and we’ll just have to hope that the $$$ men don’t want to give Fowler another chance (to botch up the search).”
    `
As I understand it, Fowler reports to the Chancellor who serves at the pleasure of the BOT. My guess is as long as the football and basketball teams beat the Holes AND those coaches don’t be a bunch of Dheads, Fowler will continue in capacity of AD. I doubt the $$$ men have a hard on for Fowler the way some of us do.

Proof of Noah’s claims will be proven true or false soon enough. He claims the decision is already made and Sid is “dead man walking” based on Noah’s confidental all powerful sources. We all read it. So lets see if Sid is fired or already fired as Noah claims.

Then SaccoV you truely can call his garbage out on the carpet. Not the first time and won’t be the last time I am sure.

Amazing we had 2 assistants recruiting the junior college tournament. You think with Sid already a “dead man walking” they wouldn’t be wasting their time.

  6. Afterglow 03/26/2009 at 2:04 PM #

My prediction… Seth Curry to Virginia Tech. I have no factual information to base this on except-it’s what my magic eight ball told me. And by the way, I don’t recommend using this in trying to figure out what stocks to buy.

  7. pakfanistan 03/26/2009 at 2:05 PM #

I think that Lee Fowler’s continued employment is a strong indicator that he has someone’s faith naked pictures.

Wow. Reading really isn’t your thing, is it?

I said the exact opposite of that TWICE…and put letters and arrows and signal flares all around it. And you STILL got it wrong.

BTW, one of those JUCO guys we’re scouting averaged a whopping NINE points a game last year. And didn’t qualify coming out of high school. And couldn’t get into ECU. And still isn’t qualified today.

    Wolf Dog,
Lowe isn’t going to give up trying to win. I’m sure he and staff will continue to recruit. For many, though, it doesn’t matter how hard he tries. He’s not good enough to run a div. 1 high major program and he will fail. that’s not his fault the job’s over his head. alot of fans feel that way already, why wouldn’t the more important decision makers also think that way by now? just look at the results the 1st three years. what gives anyone the impression he can win in the acc? the best the man’s done so far is make it to the acc finals with a roster full of sendek’s recruits.

  10. tvp1 03/26/2009 at 2:10 PM #

I graduated in 2003, have the means to contribute to the WPC if I wanted to, love NC State and NC State sports, I give money to the academic programs at the school…and I’ve never joined the WPC. It would be a waste of $$$ given the current state of affairs and I can’t do it in good conscience.

The moment Fowler goes and someone who seems competent is brought in (Charlie Cobb?), then I’ll join the WPC.

“The talk among the money boys is everyone has agreed to give Sid two more years with no looking over his shoulder…
…We all know things change, but if the Currys are considering NCSU ( and the talk is it is a consideration) it will be with full knowledge and promise from the AD that Sid will be the coach in 2 years.

Right now I hear no talk to let Sid go, he is 100% safe right now.”
    `
Either nobody read this OR nobody believes a word of it. I suggest going back and reading it. This likely is the way it is.
    `
Wolf Dog, Is it possible for you to reveal the source of this or how you came to this conclusion. It reflects my thinking although I have admittedly been swayed to believe that Sid had one more year and possibly another if the circumstances justified it.
    `
The six years on the contract is our word. To do any less is an integrity issue. I value integrity as much as NCAAT appearances. I understand others might not see it this way

  12. Noah 03/26/2009 at 2:22 PM #

The six years on the contract is our word. To do any less is an integrity issue.

No, the six years is simply a term in the employment contract. If we fire him, we have to either reach a settlement on the remaining time or pay him the full value of the remaining time.

As far as Lee Fowler “guaranteeing” Lowe’s employment to someone else…yeah, he probably is that damn stupid. He was out giving Amato a vote of confidence AFTER it had been determined that Amato would be fired.

Fowler can guarantee that he’ll give Seth Curry a unicorn. If you think that Lowe’s fortunes rest solely on the shoulders of Lee Fowler — think again.

  13. GAWolf 03/26/2009 at 2:29 PM #

So back to the topic at hand… any rumblings that Curry could actually come here? I agree that if for nothing else it would give us a much needed shot in the arm of at least SOME positive press (whether the kid is deserving of the hype or not).

  14. Noah 03/26/2009 at 2:31 PM #

    Check the Coaching-Carousel thread.

First post in the comments section implies that it’s Wake or (I guess) Davidson.

  15. Wolf Dog 03/26/2009 at 2:32 PM #

    Greywolf thanks.

No I will not reveal who I am or who I talk to, if I did no one would tell me anything. Most people have no idea I am on here as no big donors that I know of even go to this site. I am not a major donor, I am small fry compared to those people. But some of them are clients of my company. I will tell you I have a friend with ties to the ACC office and they are usually kept very much informed on the status of men’s football and bb coaches. I attend events at the Charlotte Touchdown Club and other places so you meet the money boys there not on the web.

I will tell you this you can learn lots about what is being planned and discussed by looking at the budgets of the UNC System, NCSU, the Wolfpack Club, and our athletic dept. They make budget proposals. I see some of these cause we have some state contracts and they have to budgeted in advance. This info is public knowledge.

I used to live in Raleigh and I have friends that attend some of the major churches in Raleigh. Amazing how much Wolfpack inside info flows between the church pews. You know Mike O’Cain was a Sunday School teacher? You know Les told me he thought word got to O’Cain at church before he ever talked to him. I still respect O’Cain for making the stance that the staff stayed or fire him.

But one thing I do know most everything I read on here is conjector or opinion. Even the money boys are surprised. Like TOB wanting the job that came out of nowhere and was a pleasant surprise.

One good factor is the attitude of the staff towards a coach. Doherty and Amato are good examples. They rubbed many people the wrong way so it was easier to let them go and easier to pull the trigger quicker on them.

Seth Curry will play at an ACC school in NC however it is not NC State.

  17. Afterglow 03/26/2009 at 2:38 PM #

My gut tells me that the Curry’s will steer clear of here. I think uprooting yourself is enough of an unsettling transition to deal with. If you’re the Curry’s looking in from the outside, you may consider Based on the basketball programs achievements over the last three years if you’re the Curry’s doing due diligence for your son, you’ve go to wonder-is this ground fertile and stable? Or is it tainted?

  18. GAWolf 03/26/2009 at 2:42 PM #

    Can I get a unicorn?

  19. Afterglow 03/26/2009 at 2:46 PM #

A unicorn? I know some people. I can get a good deal on umpa loompas too.

What I really wish, is went I went to edit my F#@!ing comments, it would allow me to. Anyone else having this problem every now and then?

  20. Afterglow 03/26/2009 at 2:49 PM #

Actually you know what… a unicorn would be realy good shot in the arm for this program.

    New projected starting line up:
    A unicorn, C
    Mark Davis, G
    Curtis Marshall, G
    Lakista McCuller, G
    Marcus Wilson, SF”

  21. Ed89 03/26/2009 at 3:03 PM #

SFN: We don’t tolerate questioning fan status here. Cut that shit out.

It actually very entertaining to read the Noah (or is it Carnac the Magnificent) lovefest. While I enjoy many of Noah’s posts, as they are very entertaining and often informative, most are conjecture, opinion and comedic analogies, yet everyone seems to take them as gospel. It’s quite funny. He does have a great knowledge of recruiting history, but where that translates to how to run a D-1 basketball program, I do not know.

Can I get a list of actual predictions that have come true??? I noticed he didn’t bother making a prediction back in January about what our ACC record would be. He rarely posts after we win, but posted often after a loss. So again, what has Noah predicted that has come true?? And saying, “DeMarcus Cousins or Derrick Favors ISN’T coming to State doesn’t count”. Who IS coming? And again, I’m not trying to make this personal as I enjoy his entertaining posts, but I think some of you jump on the bandwagon when he rarely, if ever presents any facts or inside knowledge of “our” basketball program.

  22. Afterglow 03/26/2009 at 3:13 PM #

Give the guy a break for crying out loud! He built a boat, got all the animals… that flood? Who could have guessed that? Oh wait, wrong Noah.

  23. Noah 03/26/2009 at 3:14 PM #

Can I get a list of actual predictions that have come true???

Predictions are guesses at things that haven’t happened yet. What I have been talking about are things where the outcome has already been decided.

Lowe has burned through a great deal of goodwill. How do I know this? Because when I was talking with someone who would know, they said, “Sidney Lowe has burned through a great deal of goodwill.” And then they listed some of his deeds that had ticked off people who matter.

When I say that people use the “dead man walking” tone, I mean that people who are normally incredibly optimistic say things like, “Lowe’s not going to make it” and then explain why.

Those are not predictions of future events. Those are reports of events which have already taken place.

sorry, (i tried to delete this post, but i had to say something)

  25. rtpack24 03/26/2009 at 3:36 PM #

Noah, anything you can share concerning burning through good will. I know about all the concerns with “Q” and they had to force Sidney to get rid of him.
