RTC: Seth Curry could save Lowe’s job?

We’ve been really humming here at SFN the last few weeks as there is an awful lot of NC State Basketball news out there for a team that failed to make the NCAA Tournament. (We hope that you are passing the word to all of your friends that they need to be visiting us more often!)

  • This entry looks at the 2009-2010 Wolfpack
  • This entry highlights a lot of the roster changes and includes some fantastic analysis and conversation.

It was announced yesterday that Seth Curry, the nation’s #1 scoring freshman and Stephon Curry’s brother, plans to transfer from Liberty to seek a school where he can compete at a higher level.  Rush The Court has all that you need on the topic including some interesting analysis.

After being lightly recruited out of high school (when will scouts and college coaches learn), Curry led all freshman in scoring at 20.2 PPG. Curry has not listed any of his potential choices and college coaches are not allowed to comment on potential transfers so at the very least Seth will keep college basketball message boards abuzz for the next couple of weeks.

When you read the entry you will see the news that it appears Curry may be ACC-bound.

Any guesses on where he is headed? There are a couple interesting potential legacy destinations: Davidson (replace his brother) or Virginia Tech (his father’s alma mater–helping Seth Greenberg save some face and get in the NCAA tournament, but that bridge may have been burned). Or will Seth go to another big-name program? There are plenty of other programs that could use a guy who averaged over 20 PPG as a freshman and averaged 25 PPG on 55% FG in 2 games against ACC opponents (Clemson and Virginia) this year. I would think he would want to stay relatively close to home (Charlotte area) and be in a starring role at a place where he could take over in a year so I would think that would exclude a place like UNC or Duke, but I could see him at Wake Forest or NC State (potentially saving Sidney Lowe’s job) particularly since all of their current stars leaving by then.

RTC says the following more specifically about NC State’s program:

NC State: This would be fairly close to home and at a big-name program albeit one that has fallen a few notches since they let Herb Sendek go. This would have to be a huge addition for a program that has fallen to the #4 program in the state (possibly lower) and could save Lowe’s job.

I haven’t had any time to analyze Curry’s potential fit with the Wolfpack’s roster, although on the surface I think I would be very pleased with a de facto recruiting class in 2010 of Ryan Harrow, CJ Leslie and Seth Curry. Suddenly the Wolfpack’s roster would be very well balanced with skilled players at almost every position and the only glaring hole potentially being the need for a tall athletic wing forward (that may end up being Richard Howell if he expands his game).

JUST FOR FUN, here is how the Wolfpack’s roster COULD look:

I can’t tell if greywolf was trying to insult me upthread, but I am heartened to hear him talk about the NCAAT bar eing fair, and that Sid is definitely going to be judged on next season.

I’m definitely not hearing “2 more years, no questions asked” – and that would indeed piss me off greatly. Not that anyone’s losing sleep over me being pissed. 😉

While I do support Sid and hope that he succeeds I am not sure that if next year will be any better than this one. I mean where is his size? How will we rebound? As far as Curry goes not sure how he fits in as well, we have an abundance of guys his size. We need big men, plain and simple.

If he comes, he comes and I’d welcome him.

If he doesn’t, he won’t kill something already dead.

We’re not yet in “Blue Chips” mode

We need a coach who can coach. These 2010-2011 potential lineups are fun to look at because I keep thinking that we might have a really good coach by then. Until that happens you can give Lowe the talent level of Wake and he’ll piss it away in a 1st or 2nd round loss. Groundhog day won’t end…it’ll just be 2001-2005 again. 🙂

I’ve stated the facts plenty of time and it gets dismissed as “shit slinging” and “unfounded Internet crap.”

Fact – Lowe has used up a lot of goodwill.

Fact – People (and I don’t mean people on in the interweb) talk about Lowe in “dead man walking” tones.

Opinion – It is my impression that a verdict has already been reached and the jury is just enjoying one last chicken dinner before they read their decision aloud.

“As far as Noah, if he can just state the facts without stirring or adding any unnecessary barbs, I’d loved to hear what he has to say.”

Change “noah” to “refred” and “stirring” to “being wordy” and “barbs” to “words ” and I agree 1000% with this sentence.

    Thompson44,
regarding the logjam of guys around the same size as seth curry, is there anybody better than curry at that size? i don’t think so. maybe lorenzo brown, but he could play point. i think the staff could find room for a guy who would be the 2nd or 3rd best player on the whole team.

i think it would be great news to have seth curry transfer here. if we can get an upgrade in talent, then an upgrade in coaching, we might be halfway decent in 2/3 years. yay.

Without divulging premium info, we are scouting a JC big man who has the talent to help immediately.

Is this the guy from Florida?

If we win, say, 19 games next year and just miss the NCAAs, I don’t see how Lowe gets fired. Given the long rope Sendek got, Lowe’s 6 year contract, Fowler, and that Lowe is an alum from our revered 1983 team, I’d be stunned if he was fired if we improve at all next year.

As to whether he should be fired or not, for me you can’t even think about having another basketball coaching search without getting rid of Fowler first or at least cutting him out of the process. The odds of Sid becoming a major success appear slim… but the odds of Fowler properly conducting a basketball coaching search have been proven to be zero.

    Noah,

Do you have any idea when dinner might be over?

    . . . I’m ready for coffee.

  11. harrisek 03/26/2009 at 12:43 PM #

    Yeah, we need another guard.

  12. SaccoV 03/26/2009 at 12:46 PM #

Noah, how is it a “fact” that Lowe has used up his goodwill? With whom is his “goodwill” no longer valid? Adminstration? Coaching staff? Recruits? Who are these people referring to him as “dead man walking”? Finally, how can you post this unfounded garbage and NOT EXPECT to be called out repeatedly?

  13. choppack1 03/26/2009 at 12:46 PM #

Noah – does the chicken dinner take place in a week or two or does it take place next year?

  14. blackdom 03/26/2009 at 12:50 PM #

Yes Sid can run his 9 guard offense?
On a side note and off topic, since we are all dealing with the same “brain’ trust here that make the hiring decisions or in are case status quo is ther any news concerning the womens coach?

BJD, The only thing I can think of was a little ditty… and I had no idea who it referred to. It was more thumbing my nose at authority — a particular character defect that rears its ugly head every now ant again. No insult itended. 😉

Thank you for proving my earlier point.

Choppack – He gets next year, definitely.

tvp – If we win 19 games and are a bubble-team and come up JUST short and there aren’t any soap operas, yeah, Lowe probably gets a last-second call from the governor.

But to stick with the jury metaphor, that would be the equivalent of last-minute evidence getting introduced…like a guy standing up in the courtroom, holding the murder weapon and a polaroid of the crime and saying, “No. It was me. I confess.”

    Totally agree.

would the powers-that-be actually ALLOW Fowler to conduct the next search for the Men’s team–since we know already that they have given him the reins for the Women’s coaching search?

  19. Noah 03/26/2009 at 1:10 PM #

I think that Lee Fowler’s continued employment is a strong indicator that he has someone’s faith.

  20. BJD95 03/26/2009 at 1:12 PM #

Look, you don’t have to believe Noah, me, or anybody else on this site. But IMHO, you should consider the track record of certain posters in making your own personal assessment.

  21. choppack1 03/26/2009 at 1:13 PM #

bP – I don’t think they gave him the reigns for the football search.

Regarding Curry – you know what the sad thing is – we only have 2 guards on the team when he comes that will have the ability to play the one and two…And this would be 2 more than we had this year.

Of course, the bad news is that Lowe has shown himself to be somewhat stubborn when it comes to lineups. He was much more flexible this year, but that’s like saying that the Detriot Lions draft was better in 2008 than it was in 2007.

  22. BJD95 03/26/2009 at 1:18 PM #

FWIW, Fowler was told to stay out of the way of the football search. Whether that was a precedent for the future or just a “time out” based on his botching of the last BB search and his inexplicable reluctance to fire Chuck the Clown – I have no idea.

And perhaps there will be another putsch (sp?) to get him out that I just haven’t heard about.

  23. Noah 03/26/2009 at 1:27 PM #

Oooh….at what beer hall will we be gathering?

  24. choppack1 03/26/2009 at 1:30 PM #

I’m no longer active in the Wolfpack Club. But I’d really be interested in what the thoughts are of the collective members if any of on Statefans folks are still active.

Surely the disgust w/ Fowler isn’t limited to the internet community.

  25. tvp1 03/26/2009 at 1:35 PM #

Noah – it’s not a guy from Florida (are you referring to the guy with the difficult to pronounce name?) This guy was a top-75 recruit, went to a high major, had some trouble, left and went to JC. Seems like lots of teams are interested. If we got him and he kept his nose clean, he’d likely help significantly next year.

This site has a track record. Noah has a track record. If they are both saying that Lowe needs to win next year or else, then that’s almost certainly accurate information. You don’t have to agree with their opinions (and I don’t always) but they are not feeding us bad facts.

Personally, if we did win 18-19 next year and improved numbers-wise (i.e., the record was not a fluke but instead were consistent with how we actually played), I’d have hope for the future with Lowe. He hasn’t lost me totally yet. But if we don’t improve from this year or we regress…it’s time to go and we’ll just have to hope that the $$$ men don’t want to give Fowler another chance.
