Previewing Senior Night

One last regular season home game for Ben McCauley, Courtney Fells, and almost certainly Brandon Costner. Will they go out with a bang, or a whimper? Vegas is banking on the former, with the Pack a surprising 4 point favorite in tonight’s contest.

Both teams need a win. Boston College needs 1 more ACC win to cement their NCAAT invitation (they get GT at home this weekend), and perhaps 2 more wins would elevate the Eagles above the “ejector seat” – i.e., an 8 or 9 seed. NC State needs at least 1 more win to make the NIT, and 2 to feel really comfortable. This is especially true if 2 or more of Miami/VT/MD drop into the NIT field.

More importantly, NC State needs its fanbase not to fall into despair, as it surely will with another half-hearted effort like Sunday night’s. Wolfpack fans are legendary in their ability to grasp at straws of hope – but the limits are being sorely tested.

Section Six has a nice statistical preview, and also rightly notes that the dismal first half pounding in Chestnut Hill finally got Tracy Smith into the game at the same time as our other bigs. Can NC State leverage its significant front court advantage tonight, or will Tyrese Rice add a statement game to his first team all-ACC resume? We’ll find out tonight – and I have no idea what to expect.

You NEVER (okay, hardly ever) HURT your chances by winning, IMO…..

Why is Johnny Thomas and Ferg riding the pine. I thought Thomas gave great energy and for that matter what about Mays. You hit a winning shot and for your reward you get to sit the bench?

For some reason I felt very optimistic about how we have played recently. Then I looked at our schedule and noticed who we have beaten. Do we have a marquee win? Especially out of conference it is quite depressing. We were able to pull one out vs. Wake at home when they weren’t playing very well. What do we have to hang our hat on?

GAWolf’s scenario could happen – but only if BC loses at home to GT (and 2 of VT/MD/Miami stumble as well). They are a lock otherwise.

The chances of that happening are very small, but an interesting thought nonetheless.

There is a much better chance of the Miami game playing out that way. If we beat BC, there will be at least a plausible argument that beating Miami could end up hurting us (for NIT and for ACCT seeding for a miracle run).

Just win baby. Win out and don’t worry about a win hurting our seed in ACC tournament or our NIT chances. Keep winning and you keep playing. Okay I know that some our guys individually and our team collectively, are not tough enough to understand this and to follow this mantra, but it is true.

Some of this discussion reminds me of a recent quote from one of our football assistants, can’t remember which one. What he basically said was: we don’t coach effort, we recruit it.

This just in, Herb called from Arizona and said this game is too important for NIT hopes to worry about playing seniors.

  8. GAWolf 03/04/2009 at 5:02 PM #

Tim just called me and told me to tell Wolf Dog to tell Herb to kiss his ass.

I wish I could have a good feeling about the game tonight, but after the fiasco MD game, I just don’t. It was mentioned above to sit the seniors on senior night. Works for me. AND, sit Costner. The guy continues to regress. He better get a degree, because he will not play pro ball or even over in Europe. His attitute sucks, his effort sucks. Will be good to see Fells and Costner go. McCauley? The guy does give some effort at times. Now, if State pairs against MD in the ACC Tour, use him like Dan Wells against Vasquez.

The last home game for Costner? Really? Is he leaving early to play pro ball in Russia?

BTW, let me add that I think we will be better off next year if he stays.

    BC is playing for something.
    what are we playing for?
    Skinner’s a good coach, too.

2 of 3 of BC BM CF have to score for us to have a chance

“Why is Johnny Thomas and Ferg riding the pine.”

Perhaps his knee is swelling. No idea about Fergie. Could be anything.

In Brazil this week and will be pulling for the pack tonite.
We really need to win this one. Good for the team and the seniors to go out with a win. Ben especially deserves it.

Our guards have been overmatched all year, but our front court has had the advantage over a host of teams, including the Eagles. Look for Smith to have a HUGE game tonight and the Pack send the big 3 out in style, though this may not be the last home game afterall.

My mother is also there. She is on a mission trip.
