Previewing Senior Night

One last regular season home game for Ben McCauley, Courtney Fells, and almost certainly Brandon Costner. Will they go out with a bang, or a whimper? Vegas is banking on the former, with the Pack a surprising 4 point favorite in tonight’s contest.

Both teams need a win. Boston College needs 1 more ACC win to cement their NCAAT invitation (they get GT at home this weekend), and perhaps 2 more wins would elevate the Eagles above the “ejector seat” – i.e., an 8 or 9 seed. NC State needs at least 1 more win to make the NIT, and 2 to feel really comfortable. This is especially true if 2 or more of Miami/VT/MD drop into the NIT field.

More importantly, NC State needs its fanbase not to fall into despair, as it surely will with another half-hearted effort like Sunday night’s. Wolfpack fans are legendary in their ability to grasp at straws of hope – but the limits are being sorely tested.

Section Six has a nice statistical preview, and also rightly notes that the dismal first half pounding in Chestnut Hill finally got Tracy Smith into the game at the same time as our other bigs. Can NC State leverage its significant front court advantage tonight, or will Tyrese Rice add a statement game to his first team all-ACC resume? We’ll find out tonight – and I have no idea what to expect.

In the game at BC, the Pack didn’t show up in the first half, got pounded on the boards (46 to 25) and shot 28% from 3 pt. range. I am not optimistic since they have an ACC caliber PG and we don’t. Neither team is very good. Maybe the Pack can pull one out tonight.

    Neither team is very good.

BC’s wins over UNC on the road, Duke and FSU say otherwise. They may not be very consistent, or a great team, but they’re definitely a good team.

I predict the Pack will go out with a whimper. I also predict that Rice will torch us for 32.

I have started playing a game while watching our games where I try to pick which guard for the opposing team will light us up. Because invariably, every game, someone does. Most games it’s fairly easy to pick, like Vasques for MD, or Rice for BC. Not so easy for the no name games.

I had the feeling since Sunday that the Pack loses out to finish the season…but I have been wrong before.

  5. pakfanistan 03/04/2009 at 1:27 PM #

I don’t know. I have a good feeling about this game for some reason.

My prediction is State by 10, Rice with 24.

  6. wufpup76 03/04/2009 at 1:32 PM #

No idea what to expect either …

Hope they give us something – anything to feel good about. I know it may not be a popular opinion, but I would like for Harris, Fells, McCauley and Costner (if he’s leaving) to go out on a high note at home.

Don’t know what else to say but Go Pack

I hope the seniors show up. I have a feeling the younger guys are going to be taking it easy expecting that the seniors will go all out since it is Senior night. We could have everybody show up, or we could have nobody show up.

One thing for sure, if the seniors don’t show up tonight, it’s not the coaches fault. You show up for Senior night for yourself, not for anybody else.

  8. frankiepack 03/04/2009 at 1:40 PM #

^ No it will never be Sid’s fault if we lose. But if we win it will be because of him.
You show up every night no matter what, and a coach has to have a team ready as well as prepared.
You can’t continue to blame all this on Ben,Costner and Fell’s . It is the whole situation that has to be taken a good hard long look at after this season.

  9. YANCSSB 03/04/2009 at 1:40 PM #

We were favored by four against Maryland, as well.

The only good feelings I trust are those from BJD. When he was trying to pass his stone, he turned into a freakin’ prophet.

What say ye, great BJD? Or did your prophesizing capabilities pass with the stone?

Costner, Fells and McCauley made up a pretty good 3 man class in 2005. Scout had them ranked 11th. While none of them will ever make any list of my favorite players at State, it is my understanding that all three are going to graduate in 4 years and if true this has not been done by any class of at least 3 players in over 40 years.

  12. packbackr04 03/04/2009 at 1:56 PM #

    good point primacy-

it might be a good indicator if our seniors indifference over the past 4 years is indicitave of the coaching staffs lack of motivational skills or if the seniors really are just dumb lazy and indifferent indiviudals.

I really thought that State could go at least 2-2 in the last 4 games, so they’re still on track! 😛 I didn’t think the NCAA tourney was realistic, I was just hoping they’d build some momentum for the NIT. *sigh*

BTW, BC is a 95.4% favorite on ESPN’s Streak for the Cash game, so no love from the hoi polloi. I’ll still pick the Pack, in the hopes that Senior Night and a home game can tilt the odds in State’s favor.

As far as “blame”, I think someone pointed out in another thread that some people just aren’t teachable. I find it hard to believe the Sid would say in practice, “OK Farnold, force that pass into the middle”, or “Courtney, forget the inside offense that has been working and jack up a quick three here”, or “Brandon, take it easy for this half… heck, take the whole game off”, yet those are the types of things that we see over and over. That said, I’ve not seen a practice so I can’t be sure. And it’s plain that Sid has made some mystifying decisions of his own. So who knows.

  15. BJD95 03/04/2009 at 2:13 PM #

Again, don’t substitute subjective terms like “fault” and “blame” for bottom-line responsibility. It’s Sid’s program now, and he has to be responsible for it.

I felt great before the Maryland debacle, so I fear that my prognosticating ability is indeed gone with the KS.

I am with frankiepack on this one. I am tired of supporting recent State bball teams that look and play uninspired. Yes, I know they have been through alot. But, the bottom line is that they are on scholarship playing a game that hopefully they still love to play! All I ask is that you give 100% effort and emotion in representing the University in which we all love. Regardless of talent level, there is no excuse for lack of effort, hustle and desire. If the team on the court is not producing, put someone in off the bench. I would have given my right arm to just suit up in a Pack uniform! Say all you want about Coach K, but rarely do his teams lose because they were outhustled. That is the kind of fire that will turn these close losses into wins and help get us back to where we all want to be.

^^^Most games it’s fairly easy to pick, like Vasques for MD, or Rice for BC. Not so easy for the no name games.

I think it’s pretty easy in most every game.
The ACC has some good players — esp. guards.

    UNC – Lawson, Ellington
    Duke – Henderson, Scheyer
    Va. Tech – Vassallo, Delaney
    Wake – Teague, Smith
Clemson – Rivers, Oglesby (when hot)
    BC – Rice, Sanders
    Maryland – Vasquez
    FSU – Douglas
    Miami – McClinton
    Ga. Tech – Shumpert, Clinch
    UVa – Landesberg

With the exception of UVa, we are clearly outmatched at the 1/2 vs. every other team in the ACC. It’s really no wonder we are 10 of 12 teams. A Freshman backcourt of Wall and Brown is something we can maybe look forward to, but right now, I think the Staff is having to make due with what they’ve got. We simply don’t have anyone that can take someone off the dribble. If you look at the players above, most all of them have that capability (with the possible exception of Rivers/Oglesby). That being said, I’d play a triangle and two on Sanders and Rice the whole night. The others aren’t going to beat you – except you can’t let Trapani shoot from the outside either.

  18. LKNpackfan 03/04/2009 at 2:34 PM #

Ben registers a double-double and Fells goes 4-5 from behind the arc. I think the seniors come out pissed tonight. As for Costner, he comes out hot in the beginning, but disappears the rest of his career the game.

  19. wufpup76 03/04/2009 at 2:36 PM #

For all those picking us / feeling optimistic, I don’t mean to be negative nancy but we have beaten BC exactly 1 time … ever.

Sidney Lowe is 0-for-BC, and guess what? – they run that same flex offense that we have never beaten save for Loyala (Md.) … by one point. I won’t even go into the usual rebounding differentials when these two teams match up, or the toughness factor that State hasn’t had in 20+ years. Or how about if they play a similiar zone that Maryland deployed on Sunday night that we looked just pathetic against? And I haven’t even mentioned Rice until now … Will we even attempt to force the ball out of his hands tonight – or will we once again stay behind screens and not rotate as we gleefully allow yet another opposing guard to drop 30+ on us?

All that said, I think we can win – and I sure hope you guys/gals are right. I think we can win if:

    1. we rebound

    2. limit Rice’s touches / ability to penetrate (more double teams in the backcourt, please)

    3. stop dribble penetration by Rice, Raiji, Jackson, Sanders, et al. at all cost (ha ha!)

    4. hustle on defense and REBOUND (again)

    5. don’t turn the ball over

    6. actually attack a zone if it is shown as opposed to passing it around the perimeter or forcing passes to the interior when it’s not there

    7. run an efficient offense with good ball movement when we don’t turn the ball over … establish Smith, McCauley, and Costner please!

    8. get good minutes off the bench

    9. REBOUND!

    10. REBOUND!

^None of these things have come all that easy for this team this season … That said, if we find a way to make Trapani and Southern beat us then our chances rise invariably.

    Go … pack

  20. Thompson44 03/04/2009 at 2:49 PM #

I love Sid as the Coach and for those of you who do not, well to bad. As far as Senior night I feel for McCauley he gives an all out effort every game. Fells is very athletic and a streaky shooter who makes bad decisions. Costner while not a Senior is lazy, makes dumb passes and when things are not going his way just quits. The Pack will be fine under Sid this is only his 3rd year and he will get better. He can only Coach he can not play the games and if you are not getting 100% out of everyone then that sucks for you.

So be brave and understand that things always look worse before they get better.

I wish the Big 3 the best and I am proud of them for graduating in four years. I also wish Simon Harris the best. He has played some good minutes for us, and I am sure he is very valuable in practices. The team is now Sid’s as Horner and Fergie have played every minute under Sid even though they were brought in by HWSNBN (Voldemort). I hope the incoming fresmen are ready to play because there are alot of minutes available next year to whoever wants them the most. Wall and Cousins need to come and help us rebuild this program. Go Pack!

  22. wpackman33 03/04/2009 at 3:05 PM #

While i agree with you in some ways Thompson44, i disagree with you about Lowe can only coach. As BJD said, its his responsibility. Regardless of what kind of players, how their acting, its his responsibility to get them to give 100%, however he has to do that. And if they don’t, then they need to be gone, plain and simple.
Its funny how you hardly ever see lack of effort from players who are coached by Coach K, Roy, heck i was watching UVA the other night and they were loosing but they were busting their butts. Ultimately it comes back to the coach. Its his responsibility to have them ready and prepared. Just like in a business, if there’s a problem, the CEO doesn’t meet with the sales associate, he meets with the manager because its his responsibility to make sure things are going right.
Now saying that, i agree with you in that i like Sid and will root for him and hope he takes us up a few levels. I have seen some good things from Sid this year. Grant it, i would love for it to come a little quicker and in abundance, but at least there has been some progress.
Hopefully State will get there butts into gear and take it to ’em tonight.

    GO STATE

p.s. does anyone know anything about a time table when Wall will announce his committment?

  23. BJD95 03/04/2009 at 3:06 PM #

I deleted the link to the Andrew Jones article because we aren’t increasing his hit count for the Sendek-obsessed drivel he has been writing.

  24. BJD95 03/04/2009 at 3:11 PM #

The nice thing about being a college coach (as opposed to the NBA) is that you have authority over personnel. It’s your job to recruit, teach, retain, and/or chase off players in order to maximize your chances to win. That is, you are not at the mercy of your GM.

You can coach up diamonds in the rough, fight to manage egos of superstars, or both – but it’s your responsibility to put a winning product on the floor. I don’t really care HOW Lowe does it, so long as he does it.

  25. GAWolf 03/04/2009 at 3:13 PM #

Interesting scenario that could arise here… if we beat BC tonight and they go on to play poorly the next few games… is there any way we could ultimately HURT our chances of making the NIT with a win tonight? If BC goes NIT and someone is left on the outside looking in from the ACC, wouldn’t it be us?
