NCAAT Saturday Round of 32 Open Thread (Geaux Tigers!)

Great games late last night – in terms of excitement. Not so great for the ACC, as Wake and BC got demolished and Florida State (much like Clemson) played half asleep for most of the game, and paid the price. 3-4 in the First Round for the “mighty” ACC – with 2 of the 3 wins against Radford and Binghamton. Gruesome stuff.

Your stat of the day is zero – the number of teams that NC State beat whose seasons are still alive today.

Back to ACC suckage – Miami got blown out at Florida last night, and Baylor demolished the Hokies in Blacksburg today. Even in the NIT, the league couldn’t do squat.

Challenge for the SFN community – come up with some bed shitting collapses to rival that of Wake Forest, who spent most of the year in the Top Ten, but got spanked in the first round of both the ACCT and NCAAT. The best I could come up with NC State in 1989 losing to a 1-13 Maryland team in the ACCT quarters. But that team rebounded to make the Sweet Sixteen before getting screwed on a bogus travelling call against Georgetown. So, I think Wake still wins.

The only remaining ACC teams still remaining have coaches who have won national championships. The rest, out in the first round.

I’m tired of hearing about the toe. Lawson will not be 100% during this NCAA tournament at any time. He needs to play injured or not play, but we do not need to hear any more about the toe! Oh yeah, Go LSU!

  3. Sweet jumper 03/21/2009 at 1:03 PM #

Our collapse against Vandy several years ago was massive. 11 or 12 point lead with 3:30 left–correct me if I’m wrong.

BJD – I guess you are looking for games where the team gets blown out as opposed to f’ing up a sure thing.

I’d have to nominate the Panthers’ playoff game vs. the Cardinals this year (or maybe just Jake Delhomme for this game and the Panther’s D for this game and the 2 before it.)

As for the FSU game, how critical was the inexplicable TO by Kitchen? FSU has just made a stop and Kitchen is thinking “push it” and get an easy basket – somewhere along the line he decides to jump up in the air w/ the ball – vintage stuff.

Also, I’m watching the OT – and Hamilton finds another guy to guard this Bohannon kid – who can ONLY SHOOT A STANDSTILL 3 – and the guy he puts on him keeps on wandering away from him.

I swear, between the D FSU showed against Wisconsin’s 3s and Clemson’s dumbass foul in the last 30 seconds of that game – let’s just say that while the ACC may claim higher academic standards, these teams have the collective basketball IQ of your average Y-ball youth team.

We all need to pull hard for Syracuse tomorrow. The media is really enjoying Sendek’s run – it will be one of the longest weeks of a die-hard Wolfpackers’ life if they make the Sweet 16.

BJD – another football team nomination for you. This one is a college team…The Oklahoma Sooner’s miserable performance in the Big 12 championship where Kansas State blew them out. Somehow, against all logic, they get to play in the national championship game (the powers that made that choice must really want a playoff) vs. LSU – where they lose one of those games that wasn’t nearly as close as the score indicated.

  6. choppack1 03/21/2009 at 1:12 PM #

Sweet Jumper – I don’t think BJD is talking about collapses LATE in the game. I think he’s talking about when the team is there in body, but totally absent in spirit.

In the ACC tournament game he references for us – rumor had it that our team had a Thursday night on the town w/ an infamous former Wolfpacker who was playing for the hawks at the time.

  7. BJD95 03/21/2009 at 1:26 PM #

Good bed shitting examples, chop! 🙂

  8. Alpha Wolf 03/21/2009 at 1:28 PM #

And to think that we couldn’t win more than 6 in our sorry ass league.

Does that tell you all you need to know about NCSU hoops….or what?

i’ll see your wake bedshitting, and i’ll raise you south carolina. in 1997 south carolina won the sec and got a two seed in the NCAA’s then lost to #15 Coppin State in the first round by a score of 78-65. Losing by 13 points to a 15 seed! I wonder where Eddie Fogler is now?

it’s fun to do searches on other teams misery for a change. after considering iowa state, clemson in the early 1990s and others, i don’t think you can get any worse than the gamecocks.

  10. Clarksa 03/21/2009 at 1:40 PM #

I nominate Clemson of 2-3 years ago who I think started out what 17-0 and then didn’t make the tournament?

  11. wufpup76 03/21/2009 at 1:42 PM #

^Good call about the Gamecocks in ’97.

And, I’m with chop … I’m going to have to do the unthinkable (for me) and pull for Boeheim and Syracuse … eeeeeccchhhhhhhh

    I can’t believe I just typed that …

Anyway, roar Tigers roar! We may as well have some more ACC misery (loves company) at the expense of the Holes. I would like for Duke and Maryland to go a little deeper though.

Ok, I’m clearly on medication … in one post, I have openly admitted to wanting Syracuse, Duke, and Maryland to all win … in the same weekend. I suck.

    LSU! LSU! LSU!

here’s a link to waste your time, it sets in motion the top twenty rankings from each basketball season for 40 years! or so from the first preseason to final regular season polls. i gotta get outside, it’s too nice of a day out there to be playing with stuff like this as fascinating as it is. btw, south carolina was #4 in 97 going into that coppin state game, i rest my case. do i get a gold plated toilet as a trophy or something?

Good call on USC – I had forgotten about that one.

I guess you have to throw in Cleveland State’s other big game vs. the Hoosier’s. I think the Indiana really faltered down the stretch that year.

Wulfpup – regarding Syracuse. I don’t know if I ever pulled for Syracuse in my lifetime until they beat Kansas in the national championship. And I didn’t really pull for them afterwards until that 6 OT game – they won me over w/ one of the gutsiest performances I’d seen in a long time, right after I saw us show the lack of heart we’ve typically shown against UMd.

They are the team I’m pulling for to win it all now. (The only other team I’d really like to see win is Duke for spiteful and petty reasons.)

The only other team I’d really like to see win is Duke for spiteful and petty reasons.

And I pull against them for the very same reasons.

As other SFN members have done, this morning I tortured myself by reading the April 2006 SFN archives. Talk about opening wounds. What stands out now is after Barnes and Cal turned us down, John Beilein would have been a perfect fit for us. He runs a motion offense that actually works, and WVU was coming off a nice NCAA run the year before, so recruits like Dan Werner, Chris Wright, etc who liked that system would have committed to us. Instead, Fowlup got sidetracked trying to get Steve Lavin (whom no team has approached since), and completely botched Beilein’s negotiations. The rest is history – the next year Beilein goes to Michigan, builds a foundation for a year, and now Michigan is in the NCAAs for the 1st time since ’98.

Can I say it one more time – April 2006 is when NC State basketball died. What did make me laugh is when Towe & Strickland joined as assistants the next month, SFN (including me) was praising the fact that we had such an experienced assistant coaching staff.

  16. wufpup76 03/21/2009 at 2:26 PM #

^^I agree Chop, that 6OT game was a pure display of basketball beauty. I can’t stand either team, but I deeply respected what each did in that game.

I can’t quite bring myself to cheer for them (Syracuse) to win it all, but you’re dead on about earning respect and admiration.

  17. Noah 03/21/2009 at 2:34 PM #

How about UNLV in 1983? They were a top-five team for most of the year. They got a bye in the first round and then we knocked them out. It even featured a Sidney Green shit-talking event before the game.

How about Depaul in 1984? They were a top-five team too. Bounced in the second round by one of Carl Tacy’s last teams.

How about the performance of the dipshit writer who came up with the Taco Bell commercial with the dude pretending to be a pregnant woman? Or at least the exec. who PURCHASED that script?

  18. Noah 03/21/2009 at 2:44 PM #

One other thing about Beilein — he’s doing this with one of the least talented teams in the country. Deshaun Sims and Manny Harris are the only two players who even belong on a D1 roster. That team is as spectacularly undermanned as IU was.

  19. BJD95 03/21/2009 at 3:01 PM #

Predictably, the Terps are getting hammered. However, they have nothing to hang their heads about. They absolutely went as far as they were capable.

  20. Ed89 03/21/2009 at 3:06 PM #

I would have rather kept Sendek than get Beilein. He’s a good coach, but with his buyout, and the the similar system, it would not have worked with most State Fans. After Barnes and Calipari, we should have gone hard after Jay Wright or Jaime Dixon.

The ACC is really looking like we’re overrated, which I think we are. I mentioned earlier that the ACC needs to get more teams to the Swt. 16 in order to back up their “top basketball” conference claim. That ain’t happening. Last year, one team (UNC) in the Swt. 16. This year, 1, or maybe two (Duke and UNC). NOT GOOD. Although, I’m not giving up on Maryland yet. I’d love for them to whip Memphis.

Pulling for a winner in the Orange/ASU thing is like kissing your sister…
I’d like the media coverage of ASU’s coach to focus on his record at ASU and not on his past; but if so, again, rely on records.
I hate Syracuse. Always have for some reason. Grew up hating Boeheim.
    Very disquieting game.

  22. Ed89 03/21/2009 at 3:11 PM #

The Duke/UNC rivalry (while great for ESPN and the half of their payroll that WENT to Duke or UNC) IS KILLING ACC BASKETBALL!!!!!!!!!!

  23. Wulfpack 03/21/2009 at 3:11 PM #

The ACC has quickly become a crap conference in basketball. It’s always been bad in football and not getting any better.

We know OUR leadership is bad. But it appears to be bad in other spots as well, including the home office.

  24. VaWolf82 03/21/2009 at 3:12 PM #

It’s looking like the first three games are all going to be blow outs.

  25. BJD95 03/21/2009 at 3:15 PM #

I think Washington/Purdue should be an interesting game. It certainly can’t be any more boring than what we’ve seen so far today.
