Many In Wolfpack Nation Are Saying They’ve Had Enough

To say that Wolfpack Nation is seething mad tonight would be akin to calling the eruption of Mount St. Helen’s in 1980 a loud bang.

It simply doesn’t begin to cover it.  This is not about losing a game in the first round of the ACC Tournament, not even the fact that it is the second year in a row.  This is a loud yell of disgust directed towards what they perceive as over twenty years of collective incompentence not only in men’s basketball but across the board in the executive offices in Brown-Weiseger.

This time, “wait until next year” won’t work.

These are the things being said tonight:

“I’ll be on the phone with the Wolfpack Club tomorrow. If Lee Fowler is going to be around much longer, my 2009 “red white and you” payment just split in half. They will know why.”

and

“At this point, I do not think I will purchase tickets [for basketball] next year. This will be the first time in a long time.

“I’m tired of spending my money which by doing so just enables Lee to stay in the black and keep his job. I’m tired of “sell outs” and thousands upon thousands of empty seats.”

and

“If anyone can look at the performance of Fowler’s hires and defend him, then I would like to meet them and have a conversation. I’m sure the only way they’d be able to do it is with a discussion about being in the black and having such a low budget. That is a loser’s mentality.

perhaps the best summary is this one

We’ve had season tickets every year at the ESA/RBC. I was there when we beat Georgia to open the building. I was there when Brian Keeter couldn’t quite make the shots to score 100 on UNC in the magical 8-win season of theirs. Hell, I remember Mean Gene and Slappy, and the time we beat Duke when it showed.

The sad part? Those are my best memories of NC State basketball. I have that 20th Anniversary video of the ‘83 team, and thats it. I got my picture taken with David Thompson at a women’s game once. My dad was an undergrad in ‘74, and he was in Albuquerque that night in ‘83. For nearly 20 years now, I have sat and waited for my Wolfpack to step back in to this top tier of basketball that I have heard so much about.

I was born in 1989. Four months after the last ACC Title of any kind. Exactly a week after Personal Fouls came out. I know all about the history. I can imagine what it would be like to pull for a relevant team. Hell, my mom went to UNC. Trust me, I’m aware of what it’s like.

[…]

If we ever want to become what we were, and what we deserve to be, now is the time we have to do something. Lee Fowler cares about as much for the health of our athletics department as Dick Baddour does. We need someone in here who cares, and is willing to man up and treat this program with the dignity its earned. Lee Fowler has no right to pilot this ship.

[…]

There is only one thing about NC State that is what it should be, and that’s us. The fans. I don’t care how much the administration insults us or the media derides us. We pay for this program, and god damnit we love and care about this program. Lee Fowler didn’t sell out Carter-Finley 8 years in a row, we did. Lee Fowler didn’t make us average in the top-15 in basketball attendance under Herb, we did. And we, more than anyone else, deserve to be listened to.

Those are excerpts of comments here at Statefans Nation, and they are a perfect reflection of what I have heard from my own friends in person and on the phone following the game.

The situation is very simple and perfectly clear: these feelings are not reflections of “fifty lunatics in chat rooms” or message board commandos trying to stir things up for their own amusement.  These are a large number of responsible, reasonable adults with level heads –many are alumnae, Wolfpack Club donors and season ticket holders who have reached their breaking point.  They are all hard-core supporters of NC State and the Wolfpack teams.  They’ve suffered through thick and thin — and now they are saying that enough’s enough.

In an economic recession this deep, Lee Fowler is playing with fire if he seriously pisses off the rank and file donors to NC State athletics.  Yet another dismissive, vapid statement from him towards his fanbase would likely do just that. If even half of the current donors follow through on their threat to reduce donations or not buy tickets, then the Athletic Department has a very serious problem — and one it cannot ignore. If folks start abandoning their LTRs for basketball (where there is no binding contract to continue payments) and stop buying season tickets, they won’t be able to fill up Reynolds for men’s hoops much less the RBC.

That, obviously, would be a very huge problem for NC State University.  And one that comes at a very bad time, what with folks squeezing every nickel out of every dollar and many worrying about the safety of their jobs.  Not only that, new graduates are entering a job market with roughly a 10% unemployment rate — making many of them an unlikely source to fill the coffers any time soon. Money is tight everywhere and not many have much extra laying around to back a program that they perceive has a leader that they cannot believe in.

In short, Fowler needs to speak quickly, plainly and for a change, without condescension to his real employers: not the Board of Trustees, but the 20,000+ people who get out a checkbook every year and send in their hard-earned money to support the NC State Wolfpack.

    Rye,

I rarely call out players specifically, and even more rarely than that openly mock them.

What I cannot abide by is a lack of effort and quitting on a team while on the court or the field. It is unacceptable. It’s almost as bad as cheating. In fact, I look at it like it is cheating, because it is cheating on the rest of the guys who are battling with me.

That said, my feelings towards certain players finally blew off the top of my mental pressure cooker. They quit on themselves, on their team and on their school. Do that in a classroom at NC State and you won’t be there in the long haul.

A long time ago, a coach taught me a lot about life when he told me to “always try your best, because if you do you are giving good luck a chance to happen.” That taught me to run every ground ball out as fast as I could — and once, it so happened that an infielder bobbled the ball in a rush to make a throw and thus I got on base and kept a critical inning alive. It also taught me to hustle to get every fly ball and to be there to back up my fellow outfielders. That helped several times when they stumbled or the sun got in their eyes and I could help them — and help my team — by covering their duties. They did the same for me…even when we were behind several runs late. You never knew. A little thing could lead to another little thing and before you knew it, it was a big thing. We didn’t win every game, but we never, ever quit.

That paid off in a state championship, with the ultimate game played in a major league ballpark.

Sure, that’s high school glory, but those little things translate to any level of any sport. Try your best and do your best. The name on your uniform demands that much respect…whether it is a K-Mart sponsored Little League team, a D1 program or even a professional team like the New York Yankees. And it is also works very well at Jones Auto, GE, or in a one-man operation run out of a pickup truck.

If you don’t try your best, people will call you out for it…whether it is behind your back or from the stands beside the field.

The end of the VT UNX game is the reason I am beginning to hate college basketball (or maybe the fact that in my 22 years on earth I have yet to see a consistently good NC State Basketball team). Refs use a different rulebook for UNX and for the final 2 mins of a game. A foul is a foul. A travel is a travel. Violations of rules need to be called no matter how much time is on the clock.

Cowdog: Good post. You’re kind of making the point that I was driving at. If a player continually dogs it, it’s really the fault of the coach who continues to let him play? No? Yes, a player shouldn’t dog it, but the responsibility and accountability ultimately falls to the coach.

This season (and last season), I’ve seen example after example of situations where I’d probably give some kids more playing time than I’d give others based on on the court results and effort. I always try to dismiss it though by thinking that things happen off the court that I don’t see and that dictate the playing time.

Alpha: I understand about emotions getting the best of us. Trust me when I tell you I was disgusted as anyone else here about this season. At the same time, I’m trying to keep perspective and let the players move on without any more venom. It sounds like we’re on the same page.

You guys do a great job with this blog and I for one appreciate it. The effort is thankless and is for the community. It’s far more than I have or will ever give back to the NC State sports family.

Unc categorically did not deserve to win. Terrible officiating as usual. FSU is going to work UNC tomorrow and Duke will take the crown.

I’ll go back and read all of this later, but I refuse to give one penny to NC State, recommend anyone to go there, nor while I recommend hiring of any graduate until this is dealt with!

Call it callous, uncalled for, or whatever, but all of this is a reflection on the quality of the university and I will have no part of condoning what has happened at my alma mater!

Alpha – Would your high school coach have played you if loafed?

Would you have respected him if he sat you on the bench and played the loafers?

The “thrill” is officially gone for me. I never used to miss state game on tv or radio, now I could care less. I still watch, but there are no more “butterflies”. I have to admit the current basketball program is slowly sucking the wind out of my remaining enthusiasm. Kind of feels like when the football program had just went through the Monte Kiffin and Tom Reed years. Is there hope?? Yes, there is. The thrill did come back after 3 3-8 yrs with the arrival of Coach Sheridan and an immediate 8-3 year. Can the thrill come back with the basketball program??

Fowler has killed basketball at NC State. Congrats to him. Why does he have a job?

  12. ChemPack82 03/13/2009 at 7:57 PM #

There has to be hope for improvement or we all wouldn’t be here pissed at the curent situation. I was hopeful that Sidney Lowe would turn the program around, especially when he showed up on his first day addressed the fans with the enthusiasm or a kid in a candy store. Unfortunately, that was a pipe dream, and now the wind is gone from my sails.

We need change. Fowler must go.

in the beginning, i REALLY thought Sid was going to be our Messiah. . . i really hate this has ended–if there is a God, it will be soon–in 3 years of absolute FUTILITY!

I am a husk, an empty, barren shell when it comes to my feelings about our BB program.

DEAR BOT: If Fowler is not fired by summer, I am going to hang myself from the belltower. . . YOU will have MURDERED me. HEED this warning.
AND, i’m going to wear an NC State basketball uniform, just to make it a bit more relevant.

  14. buttPACKer 03/13/2009 at 8:12 PM #

    . . . And, if that doesn’t work, I won’t send any more money!!

  15. pack44fan 03/13/2009 at 8:29 PM #

The sad thing is we will have to endure all of this again next year. Fowler will be back and so will Lowe. I guess the next big question is will we?

  16. graywolf 03/13/2009 at 9:11 PM #

As a 1979 alumnus, will I live long enough to ever see an N C State basketball team reach real success. My gut reaction is no. Dr. Oblienger, the Board of Trustees and our Athletic Director do not care about the SUCCESS of athletics, only the revenue that sports produce for the university. It will take many more of you to follow suite and cancel your LTR and season tickets to basketball. The ONLY thing that our administration understands is MONEY. Become a rebel and STOP your purchases of tickets and walk away from LTR and a message will be sent.

People need to back off Sidney, and give 100% support for him for AT LEAST one more year, and maybe two. We have a GREAT recruiting class coming in and a chance to build our team a bit. If we make progress each year, we will soon be where we want to be. Will Sid get us there? I don’t know. But make no mistake. It would be another HUGE setback for our program if we fired Sidney now (unless we have the equivalent of Roy Williams or Coach K set to replace him, which I’m sure we do not).

What coach worth his salt would want to come here if we fire Sidney after just his third year? I believe Carolina fans wanted Dean Smith gone after his third year, and I think Coach K faced similar calls for his head early in his tenure at Duke.

I agree 100% that Fowler needs to be replaced ASAP. If we get a good AD, the rest will take care of itself. When the time comes that we NEED to replace Sidney (that time is NOT now), then a good AD will take care of it. I don’t have faith in Fowler to do that when the time comes.

We were 3-4 games away from being firmly on the bubble, if not in the dance this year. We had nights where some of Herb’s players took the night off or sleepwalked out on the court. That isn’t Sid’s problem. He’s doing the best he can with Herb’s leftovers. But look at the progress our freshmen made this year (Smith, Mays, Williams, etc.) That is COACHING, folks. Just because Costner decided to quit playing his best is not Sid’s fault.

  21. bradleyb123 03/14/2009 at 11:39 AM #

We knew when we hired Sid that he would be getting on-the-job training. He had ZERO college coaching experience. We can’t expect miracles immediately when we accepted him as our coach.

What I like about Sidney is he has been willing to change something when it wasn’t working. And I believe he has learned something about coaching, and will continue to improve. In the beginning, he coddled the players too much, like he had to do with his NBA players before. But he learned that you have to be hard on college players, and reign them in and teach them.

I used to be on the “Fire Sid” bandwagon, but for the last 9-10 games, I believe I have seen progress. And given the players we have coming in next year, I just think it would be a HUGE mistake to fire Sid now. We have a chance to improve and build. Why wreck it by bringing in another coach and start the whole process over again? We need to let Sid get 100% of his own players in here before we can truly judge him.

  23. pack44fan 03/14/2009 at 8:01 PM #

I don’t buy into the argument that you have to wait for a coach to bring in his players to judge him. If that is the case, then is Valvano’s accomplishments with the 1983 team diminished by the fact that Lowe, Whittenburg, and Bailey were Sloan’s recruits? Was Dick Sheridan’s first team accomplishments diminished because it was done with Tom Reed’s recruits? Was Lowe’s first team’s run in the ACC tournament diminished because they were done with someone else’s players? I can’t put my finger on it, but in my opinion, there is a disconnect between coaching staff and players on this team (old and new players included). I hope if there are any such problems, Lowe is able to solve them and have a successful run at NCSU….and soon.

  24. Wulfpack 03/14/2009 at 8:12 PM #

That’s an interesting point. You can’t deny Sid has had issues with his recruits as well as those he inherited. 3 years into this “experiment”, it’s looking more and more like there are some serious issues/shortcomings with this staff that aren’t getting ironed out.

  25. pack44fan 03/14/2009 at 9:38 PM #

There was an exchange at the end of the first half of the Maryland game that got me wondering what was truly going on between Lowe and his players. Lowe approached Mays to talk with him and went to put his arm around him. When he did, Mays took 2/3 steps back and threw up his hands. It just did not seem like a normal interaction between a coach and a player. It may have been nothing, but it makes you wonder……
