TONY BENNETT TO VIRGINIA

Washington State’s Tony Bennett is the next head basketball coach of the University of Virginia Cavaliers.  He will make $1.7 million a year and start with a five-year contract.  (Link)

Bennett is a 39 year-old former Charlotte Hornet who compiled a 68-30 record in three seasons at Washington State, one of which included a trip to the Sweet 16.  Bennett matched a school record for wins by leading his FIRST Washington State squad to 26 wins (26-8 record) and a second-place finish in the conference with a 13-5 mark after being selected LAST in the preseason Pac-10 poll.  That was good enough to get WSU into their first NCAA Tournament in 13 years.

I saw some people on Pack Pride talking about Bennett in the framework of Herb Sendek because of the unimpressive production of Bennett’s Cougars’ offenses.  For those of you who need a little benchmarking to help frame your perspective – in 2007-08 – only Bennett’s second year after taking over the worst team in the Pac-10, Washington State was ranked in the AP preseason poll (10th) for the first time in school history and was ranked a school-record No. 4 for six weeks during the season.  They held a Top 10 ranking for at least eleven weeks of that season.  By comparison, Herb Sendek has coached college basketball for sixteen years and has never held a Top 10 ranking in a single week.  Bennett’s offense may have been comparative to Sendek’s, but the results of the two men certainly don’t have much in comparison.

I tend to believe that Virginia fans should be more thrilled than they seem to be.  This guy can downright coach!  Just last year Bennett turned down the Head Coaching job at the University of Indiana!  Think about this – when Indiana – who ultimately got a great coach in Tom Crean – identifies you as the guy they want then you can’t be a bad choice.  That doesn’t stop some from already asking if Bennett is a fit?

A poster on one of the message boards made a comment that akin to something that I said while speaking with friends — ‘Herb’s job just got easier (in the Pac-10) and Coach Lowe’s job just got tougher (in the ACC).

Kudos to TheSabre.com for running this excellent analysis.

ACCNow has an entry introducing Bennett to the Conference. (Link)  It is quick and entertaining. JP Giglio has added some perspective of why Bennett is a good hire.

Regardless of the hire, I tip my hat to Virginia’s AD, Craig Littlepage. They kept this out of the media, no one tipped hand, no crazy rumors really escalated. In the end, they got a guy that the national media will swoon about hiring, a tireless worker, a great character guy.  And, they managed to do it all under two weeks and without having a nervous breakdown causing him to lose 30 pounds.

On a related note, The ACC Area Sports Journal’s Jim Young has put together a great analysis of the performance (to date) of coaches that took their positions in 2006 (including Tony Bennett at Washington State). You can see Young’s work clicking here.

^^^ Very true Noah but why doesn’t the ACC get any of them? Other than Williams has the ACC ever brought in a big time coach? Even Williams was only big time cause he was at Kansas forever not because he had won NCAA championships.

Everyone that thinks State can bring in a name should see that NO ACC school attracts the top talent. Ga Tech named their court for Bobby Crimmins, a decent coach and great person that built that program but hardly a coach that will go down in history as one of the best.

The ACC is a long way from Smith, Sloan, Tacy, Lefty, Holland, Bill Foster (Clemson) and Foster (Duke).

State went to Iona after a national championship coach left, then Les Robinson followed by Sendek. Please let go of the idea that ACC schools can fire a coach and bring in a proven winner. Doesn’t happen. Maybe Va will change the trend. Who was the guy that Maryland brought in for a year that beat Valvano in the ACC tournament?

greywolf^ you mean he went 26-8&26-9 his first 2 years with someone else’s players? and only 17-16 his 3rd year? I thoght you could not win without your own fresh slate of recruits?Well according to what you say all the time I think he really needs that grace period of lets say 6 or 7 years you wish to give Sid.So take his 3 years and compare them to Sid’s?

Great hire for UVA not good for us . Bennett can coach and it is a very good fit.

why doesn’t the ACC get any of them?

Because there are maybe 10 “big time” coaches out there and very few of them are looking for a new job.

Calipari went to UK, one of the “big four.” Ben Howland went to UCLA. Another of the “big four.” Bill Self went from Illinois to Kansas and Roy Williams went from Kansas to UNC. Hey…the other two in the “big four.”

Outside of those schools…the four BIGGEST schools in college basketball…who gets big-time coaches? Tom Izzo and Billy Donovan aren’t going anywhere. Jamie Martin probably isn’t going anywhere.

Who are these coaches you are talking about and why are they looking for new jobs?

I shudder at the boring games he’s going to bring though.

this guy will make Herb’s offense look exciting….get ready for some boring basketball! WSU scoring in the 60’s is a high scoring game!

His games can’t be any worse than Bo Ryan’s and that guy won 30 games two years in a row.

Noah – I think some people confuse process w/ results.

At the end of the day, only an idiot would quibble if you were winning championships playing a very boring style.

I really think the main problem w/ alot of these defensively-oriented teams is typically this type of style doesn’t equate to gathering the best athletes in basketball. Then they eventually run into a team that they can’t shut down enough to win.

You can utilize this type of game plan to win lots of games though. That’s exactly what Sendek and Jeff Jones did. However, when you run into a team like the UNC you better be able to score at a pretty good clip.

I’m trying to remember the last time a slow, plodding team won an NCAA championship or even an ACC championship. (The Wake teams that won back to back w/ Duncan and Childress could score pretty effectively.)

I’m hoping this will help Lowe land some Tidewater area recruits b/c Bennett’s not exciting anyone. Good luck with that Hoos.

1982 and 1983. The shot clock changes things.

Bennett took over for his father, and served as recruiting coordinator prior to getting the HC job. So he won with guys that he had recruited. Also, this year’s NIT team featured 9 (yes, NINE) freshman. He was also 6-0 in his three seasons vs. Sendek 😉

Avid reader [keep up with the pack down here in Dallas] but don’t post often. saw this on SI.Com : seth davis’ article http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/seth_davis/03/31/calipari/index.html

Not a Herb fan but saw the reference and made me go, huh?

“Well, I spent much of Monday on the phone chasing down rumors about who was going to get the vacant Virginia job. Most people “in the know” told me it was down to Tubby Smith or Sean Miller, and two reputable sources told me that Arizona State coach Herb Sendek was trying to get into the mix. I know from previous reporting that Virginia was the one job Jeff Capel would consider, but it doesn’t sound like the school ever got very far down that road.”

^Wow … Herb trying to get back into the ACC. That’s beyond interesting.

I hope Davis’ sources are extremely reputable, because that is pretty wild (not that he wouldn’t want the job, just it would be funny to see Herb back in the league after 3 seasons. Wild stuff.)

As a UVa guy, I appreciate the thoughtful comments here. One point about winning in 07 and 08 with someone else (his dad)’s players, he had been the lead assistant and recruiter for the school for the 3 years prior to taking over and winning 26 games each of his first 2 years.

Personally, I’m very happy with the hire – hoops people think he’s a really good coach and with some assistants with regional ties, I’m not overly concerned with recruiting. Pete’s teams got out and ran, but when they stopped winning, the recruiting got harder, no matter what the offensive style was.

  15. Wulfpack 04/01/2009 at 6:36 PM #

I’m not surprised Herb threw his hat in the ring at UVA. He’s a “cavalier” type of guy.

“Pete’s teams got out and ran, but when they stopped winning, the recruiting got harder, no matter what the offensive style was.”

Which seems to be exactly what’s happening here in Raleigh with Coach Lowe.

If Sid turns it around soon, everything will start going to his plan.

If he struggles, kids will become more and more recalcitrant about committing to playing for him.

  17. ktoh 04/02/2009 at 7:01 AM #

I want to know why people here are seriously downgrading winning with a certain style? I guess 10th,12th and 10th place without any style or plan is all good?
Think I would take a chance of winning period no matter what.

  18. Wulfpack 04/02/2009 at 7:47 AM #

7th place and bubble status is a huge upgrade for uva in comparison to what they have become. Tony will get the Cavs there in no time. Now can they become a national power? Maybe, maybe not. But they will be far better with Tony than without him.

  19. ktoh 04/02/2009 at 7:59 AM #

I agree he knows how to caoch as well as recruit and will adapt to the players he has. That is what real coaches do. I also believe you will not here the talk at uva about waiting 3 years till he gets his “own” players crap either.

  20. Trout 04/02/2009 at 9:17 AM #

I really like this hire for UVa. Littlepage had a good Plan B and 2 weeks from start to finish.
