Virginia fires Leitao as coach

Fox Sports is reporting that Virginia has fired Men’s Head Basketball coach, Dave Leito after four years on the job. Link to Fox article. Of course, Leitao officially ‘resigns’ so that he can receive his more money for going away nicely ($2.1 million). Leitao made the NCAA tournament once in four seasons at Virginia.

This link will take you to a more detailed article from The Sporting News.

Leitao was hired four years ago by the Cavaliers and compiled a 63-60 record. Virginia, two years removed from a first-place regular-season finish in the ACC, was 10-18 overall and 4-12 in the ACC this season.

Leitao won ACC Coach of the Year after Virginia was 21-11 and tied North Carolina for first place in the league with a 11-5 record.

However, the Cavaliers were 17-16 two years ago and finished 10th in the conference and were next to last in the ACC this season.

Oklahoma’s Jeff Capel and Xavier’s Sean Miller are expected to be two names in the mix to replace Leitao.

I’ve got a million thoughts and not enough time to post them. I just can’t help but laugh at how diametrically opposite this type of behavior is from the manner in which Lee Fowler ‘manages’ the NC State Athletics Department. I will never forget Fowler telling everyone at NC State that ‘you can’t fire a coach who won Coach of the Year honors’.

This opening could potentially play a role in NC State’s future as Sean Miller is considered to be a coach who would be a mutual fit as potential future replacement for Sidney Lowe is Coach Lowe can’t get the Wolfpack program turned around in the next couple of seasons.

TSN has a little more in their article.

We will have more on this later.

Is anybody talking about how nobody wants the UVa job? Since we’ve been told that nobody but Sidney Lowe wanted or wants the NCSU job then why would anybody want the UVa job?

I mean they fired a guy who was once COY (those bastards!) and they ONLY gave him 4 years. Who do they think they are anyway? They were damn lucky to have Leitao. They’ve only won 2 NCAA championships (oh sorry that’s State – they haven’t won any) and only about 10 ACCT’s (sorry I got them mixed up with State again). Who do they think they are trying to compete with UNC, Duke, and VT?
Probably only a few high school coaches will even consider it!

If there is a merciful God, we will be enjoying a similar press release about Lowe a year from now. I’m not very hopeful, though. We have some well-heeled donors, but we don’t think we have the financial resources to simultaneously buyout Fowler and Lowe…didn’t Fowler just hire like a 10 year extension?

haha give it a break! …I actually enjoyed this thread, I have never seen so much pre-mature and unified hatred towards a coach before…I hated Amato so much because he was arrogant and brash I thought, at least Sid is a polite and humble person, and I am proud for him to represent our school (that’s no comment on his coaching ability, relax).

Anyway, YES I completely agree we are in dire need of a football post.

The quotes from TOB today were great…

Going straight at Wilson and challenging him to keep his job and improve his decision making. Challenging Glennon to go TAKE the job from Wilson.

I thought his best was “there is a lot of sophomores and freshmen on this roster who are going to have a chance to compete and win jobs. Their job is to compete and to push the guys who thinks they are the starters, and nobody better think they are the starters cause NO ONE OWNS A JERSEY…North Carolina State owns the jerseys.”

If you havn’t read the packpride article, I highly recommend it, great insight into the youth and future of this team.

His honesty and frankness are flat out refreshing, and I am so ready for the CF opening night vs USC.

    GO PACK!!!

UVA has a different outlook than us…except Al Groh is still hanging around Charlottesville. Wasn’t there a lot of talk about how Leitao was having troubles with alums, his own team, and the administration aside from his W/L record? Regardless, I’d be willing to bet that people behind the scenes put Littlepage up to this and he did as he was told, much as happened here with Chuck. I’m pretty sure that if the big money folks wanted to right now they could have Sidney fired but apparently that isn’t the cards so it won’t happen. Not advocating for that, just my opinion on why this happened.

  6. whitefang 03/16/2009 at 7:54 PM #

Redfred I am sure you know my comment was tongue in cheek.

Al Groh has one more year to improve substantially. After all he had to fire his own son who was a former UVa qb. They sure as heck ain’t anymore of a football school than we are (or hopefully were before TOB), but their admin is not going to keep feeding poor performance which I appreciate.

Maybe you replace one bad coach with another, but at least you replace a bad coach.

“Pretty much every coach has won at Xavier over the past 15-20 years. I’m not convinced Sean Miller is all that impressive.”

^This includes Pete Gillen. Master of taking ALL of his timeouts in the first half. 🙂

And Noah, I’m sure you were joking about Jeff Jones … that was pretty funny.

Also, Matta was indeed an assistant under Sendek at Miami (OH)

If any of you had been at Crabtree Mall tonight, then I think you would be posting differently. Sid has NEVER had a lack of callers. He came through the crowd tonight. Was HONEST and UPFRONT in his assessment of the season.

He will do better next year. The team will do better next year.

Will WE ever be a DOOK or a UNX…NO…NOT UNTIL OBLINGER and Fowler and 2/3 rds of the Faculty Senate is “ushered” off campus and their User ID’s and Passwords are Cancelled.

You can take the ABOVE to the bank…

TOB will be successful…UP TO A POINT…then he will be held back if HE gets too popular…however, his Marine personality probably will get in the way first…

I had closure for the BB season tonight. I trust Sid to improve the team…

    On to Football…

BTW….SOME of the POSTERS HERE have SHORT MEMORIES…

You can TALK BIG ABOUT FIRING SID…

UVA, If I read the article correctly, allowed him to RESIGN and BOUGHT OUT HIS CONTRACT.

If you haven’t read or heard the Audio Book, “They Gave Me a Lifetime Contract…Then Declared Me DEAD” by the late V Man…READ IT…

WE, the STERLING UNIVERSITY, FORCED THE V MAN TO RESIGN…did NOT BUY HIM OUT…THE WPC LIVED UP TO IT’s part…

The Illustrious Chancellor Monteith DID THIS…and set the Precedent.

WE are CHEAP and UNPROFESSIONAL…the ADMIN and AD Department that is…

Purcell runs a good ship at the WPC…

If I remember correctly, good ole’ UNX did the same thing to Doherty…Fired his BUTT…then stiffed him…and he wasn’t even Stiffing the UNX Coeds…couldn’t resist that…

  15. kyjelly 03/17/2009 at 6:51 AM #

^Oh , Sid said he would do better next year? Well that is comforting ,the fact that he is still here on the job next year is a joke.

  16. TOBtime 03/17/2009 at 7:17 AM #

Adventuroo, you are right on the money about V. For the life of me I have never understood what he did to inspire the hatred that was shown by the NCSU administration.
I always remind the unx wannabes about the number of knives sticking out of Duh’s back when he left the hole. That shuts down the herbie comments really quick.

  17. frankiepack 03/17/2009 at 7:24 AM #

Leitao was 24-28 in the acc after 3 years at uva and 28-41 in the acc after 4 years. Sid is 18-36 in acc after his 3 years .

  18. Noah 03/17/2009 at 8:00 AM #

I’m waiting for someone to defend Sidney Lowe by actually pointing out the redeeming characteristics of Sidney Lowe.

Don’t tell me about Jim Valvano. Don’t tell me about Bruce Poulton. Don’t tell me about Fowler and Oblinger. That’s another topic.

If you want to defend Lowe, tell me what I’m supposed to like about Lowe. The rest of this sounds like, “Well, everyone ELSE was jumping off the bridge!”

  19. Mike 03/17/2009 at 8:37 AM #

This thread makes my point yesterday even more relevant. I was (somewhat tongue in cheek) knocking all the other names bantered about as great coaches that would be interested in coming here. There are knocks on all of them, and if we try hard enough, we can all gripe and complain about something. We can find reasons why so and so is not a good coach and should be fired immediately.

I almost brought up Leito yesterday but I did not. I almost brought up Gillen, as he was one of the up and coming guys from a mid major who absolutely flamed out in a big program. I even brought up Tubby, and some, Noah in particular, lambasted that comment. Tubby has won games, but everywhere he has been he has not been popular with the fanbase.

I will re-iterate my point once again. I am not saying Sid is a great coach, nor am I saying he is a abd coach. I am simply saying everyone has warts, and with the players we had, God would have had trouble winning games. Sid has been an effective recruiter – even though we did not get Wall, Cousins, or Favors, we were in the running. Those guys would never have considered us if not for Lowe. If Lowe is in trouble, coaches will use that against us, and we will never get the type of player capable of turning around the program. Cutting Lowe loose sets us back AGAIN, and yes we have made progress. The hole he inherited was so deep. Call me naive, but I think the upside is huge. Sid has contacts in the league, and the recruits want to get to the league. Sid can help them get there.

  20. StateFans 03/17/2009 at 8:44 AM #

You will note that I haven’t staked much of a public position about Lowe and won’t do so until later. I tend to agree that the upside with Sidney is huge; but, I also am fearful that it will never be reached for a multitude of reasons.

However, the bullshit about coaching changes ‘setting us back’ (four years!) drives me up the wall. That urban myth is absurd and this kind of stuff – like ‘you can’t fire a coach of the year’ – that gets thrown out there as a smokescreen & excuse to keep from having to actually make and execute good decisions.

The primary way coaching changes set programs back is by having bad transitions and hiring bad coaches. That isn’t a function of the coaching change, it is a function of the incompetence and people involved.

*chirp, chirp* (to Noah’s call for defense)

Seriously, aside from the fact that he played here and is currently our coach there is absolutely no reason to stand up for him. What I’ve come to realize over the years is that we have a fairly sizable contingent who will defend any coach simply because he is currently our coach. They will rationalize all of the coach’s weaknesses and deflect any discussion away from bad coaching. They’ll blame players, fans, refs, luck, injuries, etc – anything but saying that a guy can’t coach. These same folks defended MOC, Les, Herb, Chuck and they are now firmly behind Sid. They’ll be behind him after next year and the year after that and the year after that. It’s how they’re wired. They’ll also defend Sid’s eventual replacement if/when he falls flat on his face.

As for defending Sid on his merits…there is really no way to do so. The guy was woefully unprepared when he was hired (hell, he didn’t even meet the minimum job requirements). He has underperformed here for 3 years and while he is showing a bit of improvement there is no way to project success. On a scale of 1-100, Sid was probably a 10 when we hired him. He might be a 20 now. The problem is that his competition is all at 75+. He may get to a 50 in about 3 more years but even if so he’ll be behind every other coach in this league (sans maybe Hewitt).

  22. Wulfpack 03/17/2009 at 9:09 AM #

Sidney Lowe would have already been canned if he had not gone to NCSU.

For anyone to come on here and express any kind of doubt as to if he has shown the ability to coach at this level, you are blatantly ignoring the facts in front of your very eyes. He was a shoddy NBA coach, we all kneqw that. And as it turns our, after three years, it’s fair to say he hasn’t faired much better in the college game. Prove us wrong, coach.

  23. kyjelly 03/17/2009 at 9:33 AM #

Hewitt actually finished up better than Sid and did not lose 4 out of 5 acc games ,plus g tech has a much better incoming class as well as better returning cast.

  24. Ed89 03/17/2009 at 9:40 AM #

^^^I’m waiting for someone to defend Sidney Lowe by actually pointing out the redeeming characteristics of Sidney Lowe.

    Okay, here goes:

    1. All of his players are on schedule to graduate. Any academic issues, etc. have been dealt with appropriately.
    2. None of his players have had any altercations with the police, girlfriends, etc. (GG was already off the team)
    3. His record improved from last year despite losing his top two players — yes, JJ and GG.
    4. He has already recruited a #1 draft pick who is doing well in the NBA — and he’s been here less than 3 years. Check to see how many of your dream coaches like Sean Miller or Grant have done that. I’ll give you Capel, as Griffin will be the No. 1 pick. Remember tho, that his brother was already at OK, and they are from OK. It is NOT like he got him to OK from NYC or DC. P.S. Capel is a Dukie who ain’t leaving OK for State. Any don’t throw out Grant (with the FL players), he was an assistant at Florida with a well-respected Head Coach by the name of Donovan.
    5. He has a top 20 recruiting class coming in…ranking will probably increase with two more players that will be added.
    6. He corrected numerous “chemistry” issues from last year. Numerous signs of improvement. The team never quit.
    7. Only one player has transferred (MJ) and I think we would agree that was because he wasn’t going to play, not because he wasn’t happy with the program.
    8. Our only losses this year were to NCAA and NIT teams — NO BAD LOSSES.
    9. 6 of our 13 losses were by 9 points or less. Only ONE loss in February or March (March 1st vs. Maryland by 11) was by more than 10 points. We were in EVERY GAME.
    10. We did well considering we did not have one player on ANY ALL-ACC team. We did not have any go-to player.
    11. His most-experienced players are still players that he did not recruit. He needs time to get in his players into his system. Leito was fired for reasons other than simply the on-court product.

That is all for now. I’m sure I’ll get a ton of responses speculating that he is in over his head, etc. without any concrete evidence, but I’m good with that.

Wow. Virginia is publicly in the hunt for the two coaches that would be PERFECT for NC State. If UVA hires Capel, we need to go ahead and make a move to get Miller. If VA hires Miller, we need to snag Capel. I would love to have Capel here. To all of those idiots who would hate him because he is a Dookie, I hate Dook more than anyone, but I would love to win some ball games.

One of these guys would come here because they both have an intimate understanding of the great history that NC State once enjoyed. There are not many chances left to snare a bad ass coach who has a clue what NC State once was.

I know this is all just wishful thinking, but seriously, in Capel and Miller, you have two top-notch coaches with a grasp on the tradition of NC State basketball. And as each year passes, we have fewer and fewer people who have a clue that NC State even has a rightful place on the college BB map. Yes, it has been that long since we have been relevant. Now is the time to move, lest the winds of time blow by us once again…

The reality of the situation is this. It is mid-March, which means it is time for Lay Fowluhhh to start his much needed annual vacation, so that he can play plenty of golf and seek the ultimate steak dinnnuhhh, before work recommences in mid-August. You know, those 40 hour weeks that he thinks is the representation of hard work. The guy is a class A bum and everything about our athletics department bears the stamp of this piece of shit’s laziness and incompetence.
