Cousins to Memphis; Is John Wall Next?

SI.com has the news and SLAM has the quotes and the N&O has it on Monday.

“Me and my family came to a decision after talking about it. We just thought it was the best place for me to be,” said Cousins this morning. “Everything about the school, the city, whole visit was impressive. I already liked Memphis, so the visit was just icing on the cake.”

“Winning a national championship, that’s my number-one goal [as a freshman next season],” stated Cousins. “Whatever Cal [Memphis head coach John Calipari] needs me to do, I’ll do it. However I have to fit in, I’m willing to do it.”

Expect Cousins, currently ranked second in the SLAM Fresh 50, to have a brief tenure at Memphis, as in one-and-done, if he plays up to his potential. A physical force in the paint, Cousins has a solid back-to-the-basket game, but is also capable of stepping out to hit mid-range jumpers consistently and put the ball on the floor well for a player of his size. In addition, he’s an excellent passer, both in the halfcourt and when making outlet passes to start the fast break, something Memphis excels at. If he commits himself to getting in tip-top shape and decides to dominate both ends of the glass, as well as providing a defensive presence at all times, his upside is as high as any player’s in the senior class.

Since he has all the tools to be an elite baller in the college game (and beyond), a motivator like Calipari and Memphis’ style of play should serve him well.

“He [Cal] just shoots straightforward with you,” said Cousins. “He’s a tough person, but also loves you and that’s what I was looking for.”

Now that Cousins is off of the Wolfpack’s radar the attention of many Wolfpack fans will turn to point guard phenom, John Wall.

Wall’s announcement could come at any time, but there has been whispering amongst college recruiting circles that the same Memphis Tigers who just landed DeMarcus Cousins may have emerged as a leader for Wall.

Just last week the N&O’s Luke DeCock wrote a fantastic article explaining how John Wall could be a success at NC State that would transcend whatever his on-the-court achievements. The article takes the form of letter to Wall and is something that you should definitely read if you have not.

It’s not like you could go wrong at either of those schools, but at N.C. State, you have a chance to do so much more.

You have a chance to make an impact that will last far beyond the one year you play there. You will be giving something back to the community where you were raised. And you will have a chance to play in the best league in the country, in front of all your friends and family.

[snip]

Perhaps more important, you’re only going to spend one year in college. At Memphis or Baylor, you will come and go like the wind. One plays in a mediocre conference, the other has a mediocre basketball history. N.C. State blows both away in both categories.

There’s a rich basketball tradition at N.C. State, but it needs a modern-day booster shot. Herb Sendek couldn’t do it, no matter how many times he went to the NCAA Tournament. You could, even if you stay for only a year.

As much as it helps N.C. State to have players like you (and Derrick Favors, who chose Georgia Tech) considering the Pack, if you actually played there you would raise the school’s profile among potential recruits who weren’t alive in 1983 and who don’t know Reynolds Coliseum from Reynolds Wrap.

That generation, your successors, would be thinking of you when they added N.C. State to their lists, creating a legacy that will last long after your first shoe deal expires.

Whatever you choose, there are no wrong answers. A wonderful basketball career stretches out before you. But it’s worth giving a second thought to staying home before you leave to head down that road.

Something that we have not yet covered in detail is the issue of Dwon Clifton and the potential ‘package deal’ for Wall. ESPN’s Outside the Lines recently ran a report on package deals that included a focus on Wall that can be seen by clicking here.

We expect the Wolfpack to probably sign two more players for next year’s recruting class – including at least one more post player. That player could be Australian, Jordan Vandenberg. Additionally, there is some speculation that State could move Julius Mays to a shooting guard position and still target a point guard in this upcoming class.

Missing on Derrick Favors and DeMarcus Cousins may mean that Coach Lowe’s biggest recruit next year may be Brandon Costner. Moving Costner back to the power forward position alongside Tracy Smith in the post could work well for both the Wolfpack and Costner’s development. This would allow State to free-up the point guard and wing positions for both the returning players as well as highly regarded recruits, Lorenzo Brown and Scott Wood. You can see the most recent comments and links that we have regarding Costner’s future plans by clicking here.

I’m not saying that Sidney was really counting heavily on this, but the kid is right here, and he has many good reasons to stay close by so you’ve got believe that Lowe was HOPING big time. Go back over the three short years and just list the disappointments, starting with the players who already here when he arrived.

Man, I do hate this for Lowe. Oh well, we are back to the blue collar mode of working our way up until we can earn the proper tools.

I’m sorry, but I cannot help but blame some of the abysmal individual efforts for having a least a part in this. If a few players had looked more like they actually wanted to be out on the BB court over the past TWO seasons, and were playing harder for their teammates and coach, I have to believe that would have helped OUR cause with Cousins and Favors. It may not have changed things in the end, but it sure did not help us either way.

Sid was also the FIRST to offer Wall, almost 2 years ago, before he burst onto the national scene. I’m still not sold that he’s going to Memphis, but if he does, it does hurt the perception of NC State basketball. A school with 2 National Championships and 10 ACC Championships in the best basketball conference in the US, losing the recruiting battle for a “hometown” product to a small, mid-major “university” from a bad conference with NO National Championships.

    Wolfpack Nation,

I am pretty confident that John Wall is going to probably go to Memphis but there is absolutely still a chance that we land him. I hear that Sidney Lowe is handling this recruit himself not having anybody else deal with John Wall but him. That I feel is a very very confident move because Lowe is a great person. What I mean is sometimes his coaching may get questioned which I feel he has done a hell of a job turning thing’s around this year and we will surprise some people in the ACC Tourney and actually can win the whole thing I believe especially with Lawson likely to miss the whole tournament. But Sidney Lowe is a down to earth good honest hard working teacher and father and he will be able to relate to John Wall and share with him life lessons that he learned and also how important it is to come to NC State to help get this program back on the map so to speak. Sidney Lowe loves NC State and has more passion than any other coach that we could have brought here. He is a man of his word, he does everything by the book, you will never hear of him getting us in any trouble with recruiting or with making a bad impression on the court. He is a fantastic role model for kids of all ages and will bring this team back to winning ways. John Wall can learn alot from Sidney Lowe and I really believe that is why his mom wants him to come to NC State so bad, not only is it her favorite team but she can see like everyone else that Sidney Lowre cares just as much about the person as he does playing basketball games. We love you Sidney Lowe!!

I think we are slowly rebuilding a franchise so to speak and we are not rebuilding with 1 and doners who come through for themselves and not the team like a Demarcus Cousins who would be a chemistry issue because ANY game I watched him play in high school he was all about himself not his team. He is also out of shape so he better get in the gym if he plans to play NCAA quality style basketball. What our rebuilding reminds me of is that of Bill Parcells and the Miami Dolphins. He turned the Dolphins team around and is still building for the future of the team. If you check any free agency news this year you do not see him going for the best players and the big name players like t.o. or marvin harrison, or any of the big contract big name players. What Bill is doing is the same thing Sidney Lowe is doing he is getting guys in here to buy into the system he wants to run and he is recruiting guys that he plans on being here for a while and to be coaches players guys who roll their sleeves up and get to work and like to put in the hours and the time to develop and come into a good team. I think that is the proper way to rebuild a team from the ground up. If anyone saw the Dolphins this year they REALLY turned it up and got into the play offs and I think you will see them progress even more next year with average talent but guys that buy in to the system and play hard !!!! GREAT recruiting job Lowe Howell,Wood,Brown 3 great players who will wear the red and white and make us all proud from day 1.

Uh, TJ, now you’re flip flopping on me. Either Lowe knows the immediate value of the addition of a John Wall, and wants him bad enough to devote his own time while going after him personally, OR, he’s is building this thing using a totally different formula?

Can’t be both, not in consecutive paragraphs anyway.

Now Eddie, sure, if you pass along the news about NCSU being a 2 time Nat’l Champ and 10 time ACC Champ, I’m sure some people would actually be surprised in regards to missing out on local boy John Wall. But for right now, let’s just do what The University does, and keep all that championship stuff hush, hush, as in our own little secret.

It simply ain’t that big a deal. If he comes fine. If not fine. More important is whether Javi continues to develop and if Costner returns.

I can’t remember(its been a long time) since I have had such a gut feeling about something as much as I do this (John wall) thing as I call it.You may say it’s my wishful thinking,I have stopped and thought that myself. Why you can even call it plain stupidity on my part given the news lately(in the last 24 hrs). But there is just something about this that leads me to believe It’s here. It’s been very weird,Ijust can’t put it into words. I know you must all think Im certifiable but I have had this feeling now for a while. He knows this will only be for one year but this young man also knows what kind of an impact it will leave. I don’t even know this teenager of course and we all know how teenagers can and do make decisions for the most part.
Not to change the subject(I guess Im really not).I have a daughter who was once a teenager(now A Mom), and she played Girls Basketball for Broughton High. It wasn’t easy for her to leave Raleigh to play College ball out of state since she was a Kay Yow former student from camp but, she was offerred a
scholarship to play for UGA as she would have been a walk on at State. Now we spoke yesterday and she said one thing that caught my attention right away. She said that Wall must be torn about coming here because there is that feeling of wanting to please your Parents. She said you know dad I love State and wanted to play here almost as much as you wanted me to. But I had to do what was right for me. That being said I would understand walls choice and for him there’s plenty.
But I still have that gut feeling anyhow. GO Pack!!

John Wall is about 1000 times better than Javy Gonzalez will *ever* be. It’s like hoping that Daniel Evans “gets better” in the offseason. No matter how much he improves, he’s still a career clipboard-holder on his best day. They aren’t going to take you where you need to go.

State is back to hoping that a 5-9, 150 pound point guard (who is currently a junior in high school) with an average jumper will be the guy who solves all of our problems.

I’m assuming we can safely scratch the names of “Farnold Degand” and “Julius Mays” off of the list of program-saving point guards.

I disagree that Wall passing on us hurts the perception of NC State in the eyes of other recruits. The kid is looking for a different situation. One where teamwork and schoolwork don’t matter as much. We don’t fit that. It would be nice if we had a better option, but honestly I’d rather see us land a good big man at this point.

Let the John Wall Circus pull up stakes and roll out for Tennessee. I’m a little weary of it.

^TJ? Bill Parcell and Sidney Lowe alike?

  11. Alpha Wolf 03/11/2009 at 7:36 AM #

I’ve said for quite some time that Wall would bring so much baggage that his one year pit-stop may be more trouble than it’s worth. I won’t be upset if he doesn’t come here, in fact, I made my peace with that being the case quite a long time ago.

I just wanted to look at that again.

Oh, so SFN actually does reach out to those fortunate folks who live in Bubble World afterall. Whether it’s the son or daughter of a doctor, a lawyer, or just a lowly blue collar person, it’s the happy place where kids of all shapes and sizes, do not ever make any mistakes.

TJ Everette,”I think we are slowly rebuilding a franchise so to speak and we are not rebuilding with 1 and doners who come through for themselves…”
I totally agree. I wouldn’t say no to Wall by any means, but again, I can’t worry about someone who will absolutely be here 1 year only. It doesn’t help the fabric of the program, and it very rarely helps in winning the whole thing. Sendek left the program in a shambles. Lowe is on the upwards part of his learning curve for coaching college ball. Last year sucked, but this year there has been real progress that I feel is systemic, not just a flash of good play. Players have improved and Lowe has as well- I wish Hickson were still here because I don’t think the problem last year was him and I think this year would have been even better with him profiting from Lowe’s growth in handling personalities.

All in all, I’d like to see a steady trend of improvement instead of a spikey year to year curve. So if Wall comes, fine. If not, a program doesn’t ride on one player, so we’ll move onwards and upwards.

  18. Wulfpack 03/11/2009 at 3:48 PM #

If Wall doesn’t come, what we will be is mediocre, which has pretty much been our ceiling for the past, oh, 25 years or so.

  19. redfred2 03/11/2009 at 4:36 PM #

Maybe Wulf, though I’m thinking we are going to struggle for a while longer before we actually reach the level that you’re speaking of. Something special will have to happen in order for all of the new components to mesh and for them to be functioning as a team in the early half of next season. I’m an optimist though, and I’m pretty certain that I’m already seeing subtle changes in our player’s approach to the game, so I’m definitely not counting that “meshing/playing as a team early on” scenario out.

As for Wall, I’ll admit, I was totally bummed yesterday when I “heard” he had already decided on Memphis. Whether it would have been good or bad in the longterm, we need some kind of a SPARK in order to get BEYOND this funk we’re stuck in. Maybe just this once, something to be 🙂 about, or at least a little something beyond the ordinary ???’s that we all fret TOO MUCH over during the off-season.

Is there anybody Sidney is looking at like a plan B if all
this fell thru like maybe it might. Let me say a thing to you all about this 1 and done thing with Wall. It is not about him, these kids today wheather you want to believe this or not do not connect with any of our history. They know its there and it is very nice but they will relate to someone great of their own age to have come to State. like me hearing about how great it was here in the 50’s with coach Case. This opens the door so to speak and Sidney knows this very well. Why would he go after a 1& done after what took place with JJ Hickson. Everybody might think that he feels the heat and he better do something in order to save his job,but Sidney is looking at the whole picture. He knows it is not always a sure bet that these kids go to the NBA after a year with Wall being the exception. Hell they could have a ordinary year which would still be a very awesome situation for a team like State.all of a sudden it turns into 2 years because the NBA says a low 1st round or possible a high 2. Now you have a kid with major purpose. See I have always been looking at this unique situation (John Wall) as the Key that happens to unlock the door for us.Say what you may that’s why we blog Im sure someone out there can either perfect on what I have been saying or someone sees it just the complete opposite. You see Im in my middle fiftys now and I don’t always want to live in the past but i will always cherish it.Its something that can never be taken away from me.So Pack fans enjoy the moment. If that moment is one year only well
than I’ll have another fifty years of saying remember when…

Whats wrong with all you N.C.State fans, doesn’t anyone in the world have any common sense anymore. It doesn’t matter what conference Memphis is in. They are one of the best teams and they have showed it by getting to the Elite 8 three years in a row and the sweet 16 six years in a row and by beating UCLA,Syracuse and many other top conference teams over the last few years. Yes, they are in a weaker conference but that doesn’t mean that they can be worst top-ranked team whenever they win games. They beat Gonzaga earlier in the year. Probably would have beaten Syracuse, Georgetown and Xavier if Calipari instead of playing Tyreke Evans at SF, he should have played him at PG. But Calipari didn’t let Evans play the PG position until the 12th game of the season. And when when he started at PG, he made a big impact, not anything like Derrick Rose but shows he has skills at getting to the basket.Another thing to point out is the officials. Like in the NBA, how many officials do you think are betting on games. Probably 50% of them.Hardly anyone wants to see a big college lose to a small or not well known college in a championship game. Replay the Memphis vs. Kansas game. In the last 5 minutes of the game, all the calls were against Memphis for no reason. And the refs didn’t call the push offs shots made then. Mike Donahugh, the NBA referee that got caught betting on games said out loud that theirs hundreds of officials, referee’s and umpires are betting on games. Common sense people. Any team can beat anyone at anytime. No matter how many stars you have on your team it all comes down to something called teamwork. Look at the Detroit Tigers, every single one on their team is pretty much a star, yes they are good but not the best because they don’t have teamwork. Maybe they will learn that one day. Back to John Wall now. If he does come to Memphis, he would probably make a great impact but he would be playing with other suppose to be stars. So he should be another Derrick Rose type player and another Joey Dorsey type player coming into Memphis.
