Cousins to Memphis; Is John Wall Next?

SI.com has the news and SLAM has the quotes and the N&O has it on Monday.

“Me and my family came to a decision after talking about it. We just thought it was the best place for me to be,” said Cousins this morning. “Everything about the school, the city, whole visit was impressive. I already liked Memphis, so the visit was just icing on the cake.”

“Winning a national championship, that’s my number-one goal [as a freshman next season],” stated Cousins. “Whatever Cal [Memphis head coach John Calipari] needs me to do, I’ll do it. However I have to fit in, I’m willing to do it.”

Expect Cousins, currently ranked second in the SLAM Fresh 50, to have a brief tenure at Memphis, as in one-and-done, if he plays up to his potential. A physical force in the paint, Cousins has a solid back-to-the-basket game, but is also capable of stepping out to hit mid-range jumpers consistently and put the ball on the floor well for a player of his size. In addition, he’s an excellent passer, both in the halfcourt and when making outlet passes to start the fast break, something Memphis excels at. If he commits himself to getting in tip-top shape and decides to dominate both ends of the glass, as well as providing a defensive presence at all times, his upside is as high as any player’s in the senior class.

Since he has all the tools to be an elite baller in the college game (and beyond), a motivator like Calipari and Memphis’ style of play should serve him well.

“He [Cal] just shoots straightforward with you,” said Cousins. “He’s a tough person, but also loves you and that’s what I was looking for.”

Now that Cousins is off of the Wolfpack’s radar the attention of many Wolfpack fans will turn to point guard phenom, John Wall.

Wall’s announcement could come at any time, but there has been whispering amongst college recruiting circles that the same Memphis Tigers who just landed DeMarcus Cousins may have emerged as a leader for Wall.

Just last week the N&O’s Luke DeCock wrote a fantastic article explaining how John Wall could be a success at NC State that would transcend whatever his on-the-court achievements. The article takes the form of letter to Wall and is something that you should definitely read if you have not.

It’s not like you could go wrong at either of those schools, but at N.C. State, you have a chance to do so much more.

You have a chance to make an impact that will last far beyond the one year you play there. You will be giving something back to the community where you were raised. And you will have a chance to play in the best league in the country, in front of all your friends and family.

[snip]

Perhaps more important, you’re only going to spend one year in college. At Memphis or Baylor, you will come and go like the wind. One plays in a mediocre conference, the other has a mediocre basketball history. N.C. State blows both away in both categories.

There’s a rich basketball tradition at N.C. State, but it needs a modern-day booster shot. Herb Sendek couldn’t do it, no matter how many times he went to the NCAA Tournament. You could, even if you stay for only a year.

As much as it helps N.C. State to have players like you (and Derrick Favors, who chose Georgia Tech) considering the Pack, if you actually played there you would raise the school’s profile among potential recruits who weren’t alive in 1983 and who don’t know Reynolds Coliseum from Reynolds Wrap.

That generation, your successors, would be thinking of you when they added N.C. State to their lists, creating a legacy that will last long after your first shoe deal expires.

Whatever you choose, there are no wrong answers. A wonderful basketball career stretches out before you. But it’s worth giving a second thought to staying home before you leave to head down that road.

Something that we have not yet covered in detail is the issue of Dwon Clifton and the potential ‘package deal’ for Wall. ESPN’s Outside the Lines recently ran a report on package deals that included a focus on Wall that can be seen by clicking here.

We expect the Wolfpack to probably sign two more players for next year’s recruting class – including at least one more post player. That player could be Australian, Jordan Vandenberg. Additionally, there is some speculation that State could move Julius Mays to a shooting guard position and still target a point guard in this upcoming class.

Missing on Derrick Favors and DeMarcus Cousins may mean that Coach Lowe’s biggest recruit next year may be Brandon Costner. Moving Costner back to the power forward position alongside Tracy Smith in the post could work well for both the Wolfpack and Costner’s development. This would allow State to free-up the point guard and wing positions for both the returning players as well as highly regarded recruits, Lorenzo Brown and Scott Wood. You can see the most recent comments and links that we have regarding Costner’s future plans by clicking here.

Mark my words, If we are so lucky to the the best player from the state of North carolina in the last 25 years, then every single person who is saying,” oh i wouldnt touch him w/ 25 foot pole” or “He can go somewhere else we dont need him” will be the very same ones wearing his jersey and swearing by he is the best thing since sliced bread. Some wolfpack faithful mabey are getting their feelings hurt becuase some top talent have picked other schoools. JW is not rushing to make sure he picks the right school, and good for him he should. Hopefully we have made a strong impression on him over the years and he wants to give baack to the community. mabey…

Anyone have inside Pack Pride and can read his Top school.

The link says baylor is not at the top of his list.

I just wish Russell Wilson knew more about the round ball.

WRAL has a link that reports that Wall is saying memphis is favorite. He mentions baylor but not us.

There’s nothing like the chance to go play at a Conf USA school and play against the best bb players in the country. Yeah right.

Hat tip to Shooting Guard for that post. I laughed, I thought, then I cried as I remembered how depressing those years were.

Herb Sendek should be mailing Julius Hodge a check for 50% of whatever Arizona State is paying him. All things considered half probably isn’t enough. Without 4 years of da’Jules he would probably now be a *gasp* assistant coach in the NBA.

    State Fans Nation,

I have been very positive about the John Wall from day 1 because of some information that I have had from a friend who is around the situation. I am sad to alarm you guys that John Wall is going to Memphis. We have now turned our intentions to another point guard he is only a 1 or 2 star player and does not have the hype around him but from what I have read he is a good basketball player just not at a top notch high school. You can check him out on Statefans.com and search his name to read about him. I am sorry to say but John Wall is no longer in the mix for N.C. State ! I honestly think it is a cowardly move to go play for Memphis with all the other guys they already signed. He wants NBA exposure to show and he will not be the go to man or even the 2nd choice at memphis and he will not get half the exposure as NC State would have given him. If he would have chose NC State he would be on TV almost every game and in the ACC where is the best conference in the NCAA. Also he would be given all sorts of credit for getting us to the NCAA Tourney next year and he would be ACC player of the year candidate and it would be SOOOOOO much more exposure and him getting credit for bringing NC State back to the NCAA. He could have made his mom proud and chose NC State for the 1 year in college but instead I guess he took $$$$$$$$ from Memphis because there is no way people want to go there to play against FREAKING ecu, houston, southern miss, marshall WOW great talent !!!!!! Coward move lets get the big man from indiana and the pg from down in florida and lets get on with it and turn this thing around.

Start Javy at the point, Lo Brown at the 2, Scott Wood at the 3, Costner at the 4, Tracy Smith at the 5. Bring Howell,Horner,Williams,Mays off the bench and sit Degand at the end of the bench so that Sidney Lowe does not even attempt to put him in because he sucks.

Five years from now, no one will have any idea where John Wall played college ball and frankly, that’s exactly how he wants it. He has no interest and no business attending college.

This isn’t sour grapes. I think the rule that says any kid HAS to spend one year in college is total crap. It’s a waste of everyone’s time.

Say whatever you want about baseball, they got this one exactly right.

  11. wufpup76 03/10/2009 at 12:49 PM #

    ^Totally agree Noah.

TJ, if in fact Wall does go to Memphis there’s no need to disparage him or his decision. He is a young man who believes he is doing what is best for himself and his immediate family.

It’s understandable to disagree with the decision, but there’s no need to label it “cowardly”.

Good luck to him if that is so.

I do totally agree with you on the slimy nature of Memphis basketball however.

  12. packpowerfan 03/10/2009 at 1:25 PM #

Personally I think that going to Memphis is terrible choice if Wall does intend to leave after one season. I don’t think it’s cowardly, like wufpup mentioned, but I do feel it is a waste of talent. Memphis will annihilate the C-USA next year (as usual), but it will be ten times worse than how badly they’ve crushed the field in recent years. HOWEVER, when it comes to Wall and Cousins, they are going to take the instant NCAA bid, but lose quality competition to hone their skills. As anyone can tell you, going from high school to college is a huge step, and that’s where college becomes a good proving ground. Now, with baseball, it is just as advantageous to take the money and run because of the immense importance placed on farm leagues. With the NBA you have the NBA-DL, which does very little as its own sort of farm. I know players like LeBron and Kobe jumped straight into the NBA, and were obviously very successful, but I genuinely feel that by skimping out on playing in a tough league with tough competition, Wall and Cousins are going to need much more time in the NBA to transition. This, I believe, could increase their chance of being a pro bust.

Of course…Hodge, Redick, and by the end of this year Travel Hopsbrough all spent four years playing exceptional basketball at notable schools in the greatest conference in the country (Hodge was an exceptional slasher/ball hog, Redick and exceptional shooter/flopper, and Hopsbrough an exceptional flailer/walker)…and we all know where that has put them in the NBA…

  13. Noah 03/10/2009 at 1:42 PM #

Hodge, Reddick and Hansborough are either average athletes, too small, or can’t handle the ball well enough to play in the NBA (as anything more than the 12th man).

Wall and Cousins are about getting paid. That’s fine. Lots of people are like that. And they’re both kids, so I don’t really expect them to have the perspective of an adult.

Best of luck to them. I hope they find what they are looking for. I also hope they manage to cash that check before the NBA goes completely broke.

  14. Noah 03/10/2009 at 1:46 PM #

(Seriously, this might make a good topic over the summer. But I think there would be a good discussion to be had regarding the future of basketball. There’s no more cheap money. The TV ratings for college basketball are pretty average, even for the Final Four. And the ratings for the NBA are abysmal. The Pro Bowl got better ratings than the NBA.)

I grew up loving basketball. I am 40 and still play at least twice a week. I love it.

Having said that I now enjoy hockey more than basketball. The refs have far too much input into who wins and loses a game. The game is getting away from what made it great.

  16. bradleyb123 03/10/2009 at 2:34 PM #

I won’t lie. I wanted Wall at NC State — BAD! I think State and Wall would have BOTH benefited if he chose to come here.

Having said that, and I’m not just trying to make lemonade from lemons here… it is probably good for us that he chose Memphis. Do we really want a player that is here for his own benefit ONLY? What kind of bond would he have developed with our other players that are here for the long haul? For all we know, he could have left school with bad grades, and simply not graduating hurts Sid’s graduation rates, and his reputation.

Oh well, maybe I am making lemonade here. But I do see good and bad points about Wall playing for State. Six of one, half dozen of the other.

I’ll leave you with a happy thought: State is much improved next year (without Wall), makes it to the NCAA tournament, and eliminates #1 seed Memphis, sending Wall on his way to the NBA just a LITTLE BIT earlier than he wanted. Nice!!!

  17. JT 03/10/2009 at 4:06 PM #

Memphis is becoming a total one-and-done school, or maybe they are already. Great talent comes through, but it doesn’t add up to much in titles nor heritage. If Wall goes there, no prob. I’d like him at State, but again, if someone comes in and is straight up about doing one year and leaving, I can’t sweat them so much. Good for their honesty, but 2 years is the minimum for me to think of someone as a Wolfpacker, and that’s a stretch. 3 years cements a player for me as a State guy. I’d actually rather Lowe not go after one-and-dones unless there’s a chance they may stick around for 2 years. That said, with Wall being in Raleigh and being so good, he had no choice. But like Wilkins going to Georgia, if Wall goes to Memphis he’s passing up a huge amount of eternal local goodwill which he could never match at Memphis. He’ll leave and be forgotten, at least as part of the community’s fabric.

I really hope Costner sticks around, and if he does, State will take another step up next year. They did this year, even if the record doesn’t totally reflect it.

  18. redfred2 03/10/2009 at 4:36 PM #

Anyone who says they do not want John Wall is completely off of their rocker. Those same folks are generally bringing up JJ Hickson in their very next breath too. Imagine JJ Hickson’s contribution if he had had someone who could get him the ball, but not just someone who passed it to him, and then stood back and watched the action afterwards. Imagine if the defense had to pay as much attention to the ball handler as they did the big man who just scored on them the last three times down.

JJ Hickson’s time at NC State definitely did not turn out as planned, but it was because he did NOT have a good supporting cast around him. And the most obvious cast member missing back then was a talented PG.

Talk about Tracy Smith’s improvement all you want to, but it all starts with the PG. Smith’s improvements went hand in hand with Javi’s improvement this season.

  19. redfred2 03/10/2009 at 4:48 PM #

Oh, so Wall is a pipedream afterall?

I skipped down after reading so many comments from people who thought it best that he didn’t attend NC State. Oh well, I’m sure John Calipari was in total agreement with you guys all along.

    Back to square one.

  20. JeremyH 03/10/2009 at 4:58 PM #

This is bad news. We miss on Cousins, and now Wall, to the guy we missed on as a coach. Probably looking at another mediocre year next year, at best. This talk of Leslie reconsidering makes matters even more desperate. We cannot legitimately compete in the ACC without top-tier talent.

So… how is football shaping up? This must be the year that we take the next step?

  21. redfred2 03/10/2009 at 5:02 PM #

    “Five years from now…”

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m not really looking that far down the road at the moment.

Also, why is it that NC STATE fans are so afraid of having a player who has the talent to go pro after one season, especially when the fans other programs welcome them with open arms?

I’m old school as old school gets, but until there is a major change to eligibility rules, “one and dones” are going to be a fact of life. That is, for the top programs anyway.

  22. redfred2 03/10/2009 at 5:13 PM #

This a stretch, but I say that JJ Hickson MIGHT have been playing at NC State this season “IF” he had had more imput by way of his frontline teammates. But, because he did not, he, and his NBA talent, stood out like a sore thumb for all of the scouts to see.

You can’t fear having one and dones, what you have to do is to try to surround them with players who don’t allow them, or their talents, to shine quite so brightly.

Maybe we weren’t quite ready for a John Wall afterall.

  23. TheCOWDOG 03/10/2009 at 5:27 PM #

    ^
True Red…but when was the last time that one and dones brought the cookies back home?

    ( Carmello Anthony? )

Elevate a program? Guess one could argue that.

But without any research at all, I think it could be safely stated that the 1’rs can hurt a program too, down the line.

You advance towards the crown with experience.

Granted, since we will have a tried bunch coming back next year, a Wall might just put us over the middle.

But with that hypothetical dependance, then what?

    Anybody have something contrary ?

  24. redfred2 03/10/2009 at 5:42 PM #

    ^Cowdog,

Before I even say this I KNOW full well that JJ Hickson’s name will come up again, but I’ll sa it anyway, I believe that if the other players have their hearts right and are playing with the sole of purpose of improving their own skills, that they can learn from a super skilled teammate, be it just for one season.

It’s like playing anything else, you might be good in your particular neighborhood, but when you step out of it and see what others REALLY can do, then you figure out that you need to search for a higher gear for your ownself. I also believe that having someone who is possibly as gifted, if not even more gifted, then the eventual competition that you will be facing during the season, cannot do anything but help build confidence when situations arise later.

That’s PART of my take on it anyway.

Just to add, unc has a few “one and dones” still playing, they just don’t quite pop out at you so quickly over there.

  25. wolfp83 03/10/2009 at 6:58 PM #

redfred2 how goes it? Your right on your take on this.
I was telling a co-worker today that its not John wall only
its his big name that helps Sid with recruiting.Kids today
are not looking at the competition in our league, they are
looking on hooking up with fellow 5 star players and they can do their thing. Its a different world out there my friend. I know its a big difference when that one and done is a guard then a big man. I bet ya that if only jj was here now there would be no doubt Wall would be here. It’s all about the matchups.Hell he said it himself he needs a good big man in order to showcase his talent. I am glad I grew up in a different era of basketball and Football here at NC STATE…
