Cousins to Memphis; Is John Wall Next?

SI.com has the news and SLAM has the quotes and the N&O has it on Monday.

“Me and my family came to a decision after talking about it. We just thought it was the best place for me to be,” said Cousins this morning. “Everything about the school, the city, whole visit was impressive. I already liked Memphis, so the visit was just icing on the cake.”

“Winning a national championship, that’s my number-one goal [as a freshman next season],” stated Cousins. “Whatever Cal [Memphis head coach John Calipari] needs me to do, I’ll do it. However I have to fit in, I’m willing to do it.”

Expect Cousins, currently ranked second in the SLAM Fresh 50, to have a brief tenure at Memphis, as in one-and-done, if he plays up to his potential. A physical force in the paint, Cousins has a solid back-to-the-basket game, but is also capable of stepping out to hit mid-range jumpers consistently and put the ball on the floor well for a player of his size. In addition, he’s an excellent passer, both in the halfcourt and when making outlet passes to start the fast break, something Memphis excels at. If he commits himself to getting in tip-top shape and decides to dominate both ends of the glass, as well as providing a defensive presence at all times, his upside is as high as any player’s in the senior class.

Since he has all the tools to be an elite baller in the college game (and beyond), a motivator like Calipari and Memphis’ style of play should serve him well.

“He [Cal] just shoots straightforward with you,” said Cousins. “He’s a tough person, but also loves you and that’s what I was looking for.”

Now that Cousins is off of the Wolfpack’s radar the attention of many Wolfpack fans will turn to point guard phenom, John Wall.

Wall’s announcement could come at any time, but there has been whispering amongst college recruiting circles that the same Memphis Tigers who just landed DeMarcus Cousins may have emerged as a leader for Wall.

Just last week the N&O’s Luke DeCock wrote a fantastic article explaining how John Wall could be a success at NC State that would transcend whatever his on-the-court achievements. The article takes the form of letter to Wall and is something that you should definitely read if you have not.

It’s not like you could go wrong at either of those schools, but at N.C. State, you have a chance to do so much more.

You have a chance to make an impact that will last far beyond the one year you play there. You will be giving something back to the community where you were raised. And you will have a chance to play in the best league in the country, in front of all your friends and family.

[snip]

Perhaps more important, you’re only going to spend one year in college. At Memphis or Baylor, you will come and go like the wind. One plays in a mediocre conference, the other has a mediocre basketball history. N.C. State blows both away in both categories.

There’s a rich basketball tradition at N.C. State, but it needs a modern-day booster shot. Herb Sendek couldn’t do it, no matter how many times he went to the NCAA Tournament. You could, even if you stay for only a year.

As much as it helps N.C. State to have players like you (and Derrick Favors, who chose Georgia Tech) considering the Pack, if you actually played there you would raise the school’s profile among potential recruits who weren’t alive in 1983 and who don’t know Reynolds Coliseum from Reynolds Wrap.

That generation, your successors, would be thinking of you when they added N.C. State to their lists, creating a legacy that will last long after your first shoe deal expires.

Whatever you choose, there are no wrong answers. A wonderful basketball career stretches out before you. But it’s worth giving a second thought to staying home before you leave to head down that road.

Something that we have not yet covered in detail is the issue of Dwon Clifton and the potential ‘package deal’ for Wall. ESPN’s Outside the Lines recently ran a report on package deals that included a focus on Wall that can be seen by clicking here.

We expect the Wolfpack to probably sign two more players for next year’s recruting class – including at least one more post player. That player could be Australian, Jordan Vandenberg. Additionally, there is some speculation that State could move Julius Mays to a shooting guard position and still target a point guard in this upcoming class.

Missing on Derrick Favors and DeMarcus Cousins may mean that Coach Lowe’s biggest recruit next year may be Brandon Costner. Moving Costner back to the power forward position alongside Tracy Smith in the post could work well for both the Wolfpack and Costner’s development. This would allow State to free-up the point guard and wing positions for both the returning players as well as highly regarded recruits, Lorenzo Brown and Scott Wood. You can see the most recent comments and links that we have regarding Costner’s future plans by clicking here.

wolfpup – Yes, I’m considering Costner gone next year.

I really think that Horner has played great down the stretch. He still has brain farts of his own, but I see him as a key to us being a decent team next year. He’s going to have to play the role that Costner/McCauley play now…I don’t think Smith can play that role.

I’m not counting on much from Howell. I’ve read too much conflicting information about him to assume that he’s ready to contribute. If he’s good, I’ll be thrilled, but I’m thinking next year he’s a reserve.

  2. BJD95 03/09/2009 at 2:08 PM #

It’s not a matter of Javi being a weakness so much as it is Wall being an affirmative team strength. That’s what we need – an all-ACC caliber performer.

Right now, Tracy Smith is the only projected starter next year who profiles as better than “league average” – and frankly, even that assumption requires significant defensive improvement.

Beyond that, you have alot of positions where we are HOPING to be “OK” at best – i.e., Javi should be OK at PG, Horner/Howell should be OK at the 4, etc. Brown is a very good talent, but do we expect him to be one of the 3 or so best SGs in the ACC as a freshman? Pretty tall order.

When you add it all up, it’s hard to see the 2009-10 team’s ceiling as anything more than the bubble unless we add an immediate impact talent. And the last such player available is John Wall.

All this recruiting talk is nice. I certainly keep up with recruiting. I, however, am much more concerned about who is coaching these recruits.

  4. Rochester 03/09/2009 at 2:21 PM #

Aside from the whole one-and-done thing with Wall, I can’t quite understand why if this guy is the best PG in the nation his HS team really isn’t all that great. We’re expecting him to come in here next year and raise us up to the top of the ACC and he’s not even doing that in HS. Are the teams he’s facing better than ACC competition? Is his coach subbing in a lot of JV players to keep all the parents happy? I want to see a PG make his team better. If Wall’s doing that then Word of God must really suck without him.

  5. choppack1 03/09/2009 at 3:01 PM #

BJD – I guess I’m just not drinking the Wall Kool-Aid. I mean, I think his team’s record was something like 14-12.

Don’t get me wrong, the publicity alone of signing him would be great, but I’m not sure if he is the kind of player capable of providing the toughness and leadership we need.

I’d love to see us get a big man who can contribute immediately. IMHO, we needed Cousins or Favors more than we needed Wall. Of course, I didn’t think that was the case until the second half of the ACC season when Javi started playing like he currently is.

  6. BJD95 03/09/2009 at 3:16 PM #

^ You can make a case for that – but now, it’s Wall or nothing, as far as immediate impact players are concerned.

About Wall, does anyone have any insight on exactly WHAT he is waiting for?

People seem to believe that if he was coming to NC State, he would have committed by now. But couldn’t you make the same argument for any OTHER school on his list? He’s waiting for a reason. But waiting for what?

Is it possible he wants to see what a particular team does in the tournament (not necessarily the Pack)? Or could it be he wants to make sure Sidney isn’t on the hotseat or fired after this season? I mean, if he committed to State and Sid got fired (which we all know won’t happen, but does John Wall know that won’t happen?), it would be a big hassle for him. So could it be he’s waiting to see what Sid’s job status is?

Or is he waiting to see who commits where?

I’m just randomly guessing. I don’t know what he could possibly learn later that he doesn’t already know at this point. Is he just messing with everybody involved?

  8. Noah 03/09/2009 at 3:37 PM #

Techincally, I belive John Wall could go pro right now. He got reclassified.

I don’t know what he’s waiting for. But he has that option.

  9. choppack1 03/09/2009 at 4:08 PM #

bradley b – he may have also been waiting on another “big” to make his decision. There was a lot of speculation that if Favors OR Cousins went to NC State, he would have followed.

Noah – that’s an interesting option that I haven’t heard before, but depending on how the NBA rules on such a thing, I would think he could indeed be eligible if you apply the NFL rules. I know in the NFL, if a kid graduates from high school, preps for a year, he could go to Juco for 2 years and be eligible for the draft.

Here’s a good synopsis of recent NC State basketball:

Pretty funny, but I seriously hope Wall picks State!

  11. JT 03/09/2009 at 4:40 PM #

Javi’s hard to evaluate because he’s so much better than he was, even if he does have his mental lapses. He couldn’t shoot before, and now he’s a solid shooter. When he’s clicking, he really seems to have a grip on the flow of the game, which he never had before. Point is, IF he keeps improving, he’d be a fine starting PG. IF he keeps improving at his current rate he could be a very good PG. who knows what his ceiling is? Not long ago he wasn’t good enough to play in the ACC. Now he’s a solid player. If anybody says they know where his ceiling is, they’re lying or assuming a too much. He’ll start next year, and I’m fine with it.

  12. 61Packer 03/09/2009 at 7:04 PM #

I do not foresee, much less want, John Wall in a Wolfpack uniform next season. He might win a few games for us, but what does he do for our program in the long run? Talent is important, yes, but so are team unity and building for the future, with players who want to play for NC State moreso than for themselves. I believe that’s what happened last season with JJ Hickson, a wonderfully talented player who led us nowhere but to the bottom of the ACC. Yes, Hickson played well, but I believe his presence on the team destroyed team chemistry. Despite the NBA’s cancerous effect on the college game, at least the college game is still team oriented, unlike the pro game.

Besides, if what I’m reading on here is true about next season’s Wolfpack class being so good, we shouldn’t worry this much about what a certified one-and-done player does, as long as he doesn’t end up at Chapel Hill, Winston-Salem or Durham.

  13. Afterglow 03/09/2009 at 7:09 PM #

John Wall’s going to Memphis. Or at least that’s how I’ve felt all along. I think maybe the reason he hasn’t committed yet is becuase he is in such close proximity to NC State. Perhaps it would make him feel awkward committing to Memphis early while living here in Raleigh-or maybe that’s just a stupid idea. In any event, he’ll go to Memphis.

As for Javi; I love that he’s made some strides but I think the bar for point guard at NC State has been lowered to such subpar levels that anything involving not turning the ball over after bringing it across the time line is brilliant. He’s not sliced bread folks-he wouldn’t sniff the floor in mop up duty at any other ACC school. I have seen some games where I thought, hey, maybe this could be the guy-but I question how much my perception is warped do to the fact that we haven’t had a true point guard in a long long time. It’s kind of like being stranded on an island; if you’ve been there long enough, anything that moves starts to look good. And as I’ve said all along, if I’m proven wrong-great!

  14. MA Wolfpack 03/09/2009 at 8:22 PM #

I hope everyone is wrong, and he stays around Raleigh for 1 year. NCSU does not have the talent to win, and NCSU will never win without players as talented as John Wall. Everyone hoping that Wall goes elsewhere should keep that in mind when UNC and Duke are dominating in Raleigh next year.

  15. choppack1 03/09/2009 at 8:41 PM #

Definitely off subject, but there’s some great info on this year’s NFL combine and it’s correlation to stars…It bodes well for someone like TOB:

This doesn’t sound too good for NCSU and Wall, but we will see.

“Herb Sendek hit the ground running. Everyone remembers the players he brought in. From purely a rankings standpoint, he did significantly better than Lowe or Robinson.”

Oh yeah, HS really hit the ground running. Who can forget…

SOOOOOO CLOSE: Al Harrington, Schea Cotton, and Byron Mouton were certainly memorable characters surpassed only by Meadowlark Lemon and Curly Neal at State. So many memories, so little time. CLASS ONE: I remember Ron Anderson and Rouldra Thomas being lights out. Nobody passed out better than Rouldra face down on the pavement off Western. (Kenny, Archie, and Corny stayed, so I won’t knock them.) CLASS TWO: I think Adam Harrington and his blankie and night light should be enshrined. Keith Bean should probably have his jersey retired for all of his contributions while we are at it, especially since he tried to “knock” Houston out all on his own. (No one from this class stayed.) CLASS THREE: “Gerald” Wilkins future NBA career was obvious as was Marshall “Lottery” Williams who was stellar. Nobody packed more into such a short time as those guys. (Thanks to Steve Blake, I mean Cliff Crawford, for staying the full 4.) CLASS FOUR: Trey Guidry, whew, you could only hope to contain his career. Thank God Marcus and Scooter finally came along to bridge the gap between Trey Guidry and Justin Flatt, even if both had to stay on the bench for no apparent reason for much of their early days.

Yep, the “rankings” must be why it took until year 6 for James Harden, I mean Julius Hodge, to carry Sendek to the NCAA’s.

  19. Gene 03/09/2009 at 11:15 PM #

For people who don’t want Wall, one reason I want him is because if he’s as good as advertised, going up against in practice will help the other players.

I know I want to say we can win with a scrappy line up, but at some point you need a superstar to elevate a team, like Chris Paul did for Wake Forest the two years he played there.

Even Stephon Marbury, in his brief, brief college career made an impact at Ga. Tech.

The only pipe dream is having Wall and Brown form a super back court combo for at least three years…

Both THE WOLFPACKER and PACKPRIDE say Wall named a favorite, and a possible announcement date tonight…Anybody happen to know either or both of those?

  21. TJEVERETTE1984 03/10/2009 at 12:30 AM #

YES I HAVE THE ANSWER TO BOTH. HE PLANS TO ANNOUNCE IT AT THE END OF THE WEEK. I HAVE INSIDE SOURCES CLOSE TO THE SITUATION THAT SAYS HE IS COMING TO N.C. STATE . HE WAS WAITING BECAUSE IF COUSINS CAME HERE HE WAS GOING TO MEMPHIS. HE WANTS TO COME HERE AND BRING US BACK TO THE NCAA AND GET TOTAL CREDIT INSTEAD OF SHARING IT WITH DEMARCUS

    I dunno?

    Hey all,

I talked with Javi today at Case during lunch (the entire bball staff was there — Larry Harris, Lowe, everyone) and he was really confident in the team. I know it doesn’t sound like much at all, but I have him in my statistics class as well, and at the beginning of the semester he seemed very quiet and apprehensive after games. I know he may not be the most talented, but I’m really impressed with how far he’s come. This has little to do with Wall or Cousins, but I felt it was some good info for Pack fans.

This is for the next person to read this blog. Hopefully DT will see it. David what state needs is not coach lowe or any of the assistant coaches to have done this while recruiting but you. I dont know how much contact can be made if any to a possible recruit these days so I could be totally off base. But if John Wall was to speak to you who better could advise a young man about his future on what will be a great journey for him. There are alot of people that have surrounded him that say for his best interest, but we all know it’s for their own interest $$$$. You David thompson I know would direct him in the right path without wanting anthing in return. You won’t even have to ask him to come to N.C.STATE. After listening to you He would come on his own.

  25. Rochester 03/10/2009 at 6:49 AM #

packpowerfan, next time you see Javi let him know how bad we all want to see Greivis grieving on Thursday night. Tell him to stick a 3 at the buzzer to run up the score on the Twerps.
