Cousins to Memphis; Is John Wall Next?

SI.com has the news and SLAM has the quotes and the N&O has it on Monday.

“Me and my family came to a decision after talking about it. We just thought it was the best place for me to be,” said Cousins this morning. “Everything about the school, the city, whole visit was impressive. I already liked Memphis, so the visit was just icing on the cake.”

“Winning a national championship, that’s my number-one goal [as a freshman next season],” stated Cousins. “Whatever Cal [Memphis head coach John Calipari] needs me to do, I’ll do it. However I have to fit in, I’m willing to do it.”

Expect Cousins, currently ranked second in the SLAM Fresh 50, to have a brief tenure at Memphis, as in one-and-done, if he plays up to his potential. A physical force in the paint, Cousins has a solid back-to-the-basket game, but is also capable of stepping out to hit mid-range jumpers consistently and put the ball on the floor well for a player of his size. In addition, he’s an excellent passer, both in the halfcourt and when making outlet passes to start the fast break, something Memphis excels at. If he commits himself to getting in tip-top shape and decides to dominate both ends of the glass, as well as providing a defensive presence at all times, his upside is as high as any player’s in the senior class.

Since he has all the tools to be an elite baller in the college game (and beyond), a motivator like Calipari and Memphis’ style of play should serve him well.

“He [Cal] just shoots straightforward with you,” said Cousins. “He’s a tough person, but also loves you and that’s what I was looking for.”

Now that Cousins is off of the Wolfpack’s radar the attention of many Wolfpack fans will turn to point guard phenom, John Wall.

Wall’s announcement could come at any time, but there has been whispering amongst college recruiting circles that the same Memphis Tigers who just landed DeMarcus Cousins may have emerged as a leader for Wall.

Just last week the N&O’s Luke DeCock wrote a fantastic article explaining how John Wall could be a success at NC State that would transcend whatever his on-the-court achievements. The article takes the form of letter to Wall and is something that you should definitely read if you have not.

It’s not like you could go wrong at either of those schools, but at N.C. State, you have a chance to do so much more.

You have a chance to make an impact that will last far beyond the one year you play there. You will be giving something back to the community where you were raised. And you will have a chance to play in the best league in the country, in front of all your friends and family.

[snip]

Perhaps more important, you’re only going to spend one year in college. At Memphis or Baylor, you will come and go like the wind. One plays in a mediocre conference, the other has a mediocre basketball history. N.C. State blows both away in both categories.

There’s a rich basketball tradition at N.C. State, but it needs a modern-day booster shot. Herb Sendek couldn’t do it, no matter how many times he went to the NCAA Tournament. You could, even if you stay for only a year.

As much as it helps N.C. State to have players like you (and Derrick Favors, who chose Georgia Tech) considering the Pack, if you actually played there you would raise the school’s profile among potential recruits who weren’t alive in 1983 and who don’t know Reynolds Coliseum from Reynolds Wrap.

That generation, your successors, would be thinking of you when they added N.C. State to their lists, creating a legacy that will last long after your first shoe deal expires.

Whatever you choose, there are no wrong answers. A wonderful basketball career stretches out before you. But it’s worth giving a second thought to staying home before you leave to head down that road.

Something that we have not yet covered in detail is the issue of Dwon Clifton and the potential ‘package deal’ for Wall. ESPN’s Outside the Lines recently ran a report on package deals that included a focus on Wall that can be seen by clicking here.

We expect the Wolfpack to probably sign two more players for next year’s recruting class – including at least one more post player. That player could be Australian, Jordan Vandenberg. Additionally, there is some speculation that State could move Julius Mays to a shooting guard position and still target a point guard in this upcoming class.

Missing on Derrick Favors and DeMarcus Cousins may mean that Coach Lowe’s biggest recruit next year may be Brandon Costner. Moving Costner back to the power forward position alongside Tracy Smith in the post could work well for both the Wolfpack and Costner’s development. This would allow State to free-up the point guard and wing positions for both the returning players as well as highly regarded recruits, Lorenzo Brown and Scott Wood. You can see the most recent comments and links that we have regarding Costner’s future plans by clicking here.

I know that it wasn’t Hickson’s fault at all. I am saying we needed the Hickson year to be a springboard for future success, and it didn’t happen. So, that class did yield our best offensive player (who sucks out loud defensively) – but that’s only one ACC-caliber starter. So it’s not a class to hang one’s hat on.

I suppose landing Hickson helped us somewhat with Brown – and that has kept recruiting from being a complete disaster. There really would be no hope at all if Brown wasn’t coming in.

BJD – what % would you put on BC coming back? I assumed he was gone but of late there have been persistent message board rumors about him returning.

Right now BC has zero percent chance of making an NBA roster, and frankly I wonder where he fits in overseas. He’s not playing his way into one of the better Euro leagues at this point. Granted, just about anyone can play somewhere overseas (see Bryan Nieman playing in Ireland or wherever) but not every American player gets a 6 figure paycheck over there.

Unless BC is just tired of it all, he really should come back and try to have a big senior year.

^ 10-15%. And that’s only because of the rumblings, which are probably unfounded.

Call me crazy, but after thinking about it throughout the season, I do not want Wall to come to State. I do not feel that “one and done” help our development. Our real chance to be great I believe, starts in the 2010-11 year, and Wall’s one year next year would just stunt that development I feel like.

I may be in the minority, I probably am, but I DO NOT want Wall. I am cool with Javi.

  5. ms termeaner 03/09/2009 at 11:42 AM #

If this staff needs an asst to run defense .I would add offense as well ,and this is what we have gotten out of three years. Than why not hire him as head coach.
Who would hire Sid if he left here? Besides a 2nd row asst on a 8 coach staff in the nba?

  6. Pack Leader 03/09/2009 at 11:53 AM #

    “I am cool with Javi.”

That mean your ok with averaging 5 TO a game by your point guard???

Lorenzo brown will be 10x the point guard javi is right now if lowe wants to use him as a big fast scoring pg.

Mabey not wall next year (even though if he came EVERY SINGE state fan would be in heaven) but god help us we arnt saying Im cool with javi for 2 straight offseasons…..

  7. ktoh 03/09/2009 at 11:57 AM #

^ Who are all these pt guards going to pass the ball to next year?

  8. BJD95 03/09/2009 at 11:57 AM #

Javi has developed into a quality backup, but he’s not the kind of player who starts for a GOOD basketball team.

  9. Pack Leader 03/09/2009 at 12:00 PM #

Agree BJD hes a quality 10 min a game off the bench.

People are giving up on mays. Im still not convinced he cant be a good starting PG.

^ Falling short by what? Perhaps by what I see on the floor?,calling someone a top 10 recruit and making someone a top 10 player,do not really go hand and hand.
This whole concept of top 10 recruits only looks good on paper,I venture to say there have been way more top ten bust’s,than top 10 stars.BTW we had a can’t miss top 10 recruit last year and perhaps not his fault but he by no means carried us,in fact we were worse off,and Sid knew he was one and done why no replacement for JJ?

  11. ktoh 03/09/2009 at 12:32 PM #

Pack Leader:^ I think Sid has given up on Mays,I am afraid the kid’s confidence must be shattered and to get anything out of him next year will take some doing

  12. JT 03/09/2009 at 12:38 PM #

I can’t sweat Wall: one-and-dones just don’t matter to me. Is Marbury beloved at Tech? Hickson at State? Naah. Gimme Tracy Smith and other players who develop and become part of the fabric of a school’s program and it means more to me, besides generally being a better avenue to success. I don’t mind players coming in who don’t expect to go 4 years, but when players are known to coming for one year, my expectations are nil.

Anyway, I’m bullish on this team’s development. Fells and Ben will be gone, and maybe Costner, but so many have developed this year, unlike players did under Sendek. Lowe obviously laid down the law and players bought into it, totally different than last year. This was a good if frustrating 6-10 ACC record, good because it was so close to being much better and frustrating for the same reason. The way I see it, the talent drop off is minimal, though Ben and Fells will be missed, and even without Wall the upside is growing with the players AND the coach. I agree the biggest recruit now may be Costner, and I hope he realizes that his best interest is to stay. Whatever happens, I think the upswing has begun.

  13. MA Wolfpack 03/09/2009 at 12:41 PM #

ktoh, why in the world would you say that? Mays is not in the rotation right now, but Sid has not given up on him. Mays will play more next year as long as he continues to develop. Needs to improve his quickness and defense.

  14. tvp1 03/09/2009 at 12:44 PM #

“That mean your ok with averaging 5 TO a game by your point guard???”

Javy has averaged less than 2.5 TO per game over the last 4. Just saying.

I disagree with BJD here – the way Javy has been playing, he’s now a decent starting PG option. He wouldn’t start on a UNC-caliber team, but he is bringing something to the table for us.

On the CJ Leslie rumors – is anyone else a little wary about Leslie in the first place? Let me say in advance that I want him if Sid wants him and I hope he has a great career as a Wolfpacker, but it sounds like he really needs to mature and we’ve been burned too often on talented headcases.

  15. tvp1 03/09/2009 at 12:46 PM #

“I venture to say there have been way more top ten bust’s,than top 10 stars.”

    um, no.

Go to the rsci rankings webpage (type “rsci rankings” in Google) and look at the top 10 lists for every class going back to 1998, and tell me how many of them were stars compared to busts.

  16. Alpha Wolf 03/09/2009 at 12:54 PM #

“Javi has developed into a quality backup, but he’s not the kind of player who starts for a GOOD basketball team.”

Agreed. He’s a good “energy” player and one that could be a great change-of-pace type but he’s not a game changer in and of himself.

  17. robopack 03/09/2009 at 1:14 PM #

I just want to ask Sid why Mays is not playing any mins. Anyone have the answer to this ?

SFN: Because there are only so many minutes in the game and Sid PRUDENTLY went to an 8-man rotation. Who are you going to play Mays in front of? Fells? CJ Williams? Ferguson? The kid has proven an ability to contribute as a true freshman. I think that will only help him/us in the future.

  18. Astral Rain 03/09/2009 at 1:14 PM #

If we move Mays to SG, doesn’t that mean he wouldn’t be needed at PG? Isn’t that a good sign about where PG is heade?

Javi is a solid backup at best really- right now, who is forced to start. That said, he deserves a ton of cheers in two years at Senior Night- more then any player since Luke.

  19. choppack1 03/09/2009 at 1:25 PM #

I don’t buy this “Javi is a back-up at best” argument in one sense. I think he’s made great strides since coming back from his injury and he’s definitely much better than he was as a freshman.

Right now, I’d say his biggest problem is his decision making – and really, that’s all that is keeping him from being a solid PG at this level. And guess what – that can, and generally does improve w/ continued experience.

I think he’s come a long way w/ his handle and his penetration and passing ability. He seems to be both quicker and stronger, and he is defending much better.

    I see next year’s starting line-up as:
    Javi
    Smith
    Horner
    Brown
    CJ Williams

If you look at the second half of the season, where both Smith and Javi have started, we went 4-4 in those games. Sometimes, the problem was Javi – but probably moreso, he was NOT the problem.

  20. Rochester 03/09/2009 at 1:35 PM #

Javi might never be first team all-ACC, but if he’s our starter next year I don’t think he’ll be the glaring weakness of the team.

As for why Mays isn’t playing, I have to think he’s not beating out the guys ahead of him. Sid said Javi won his job back in practice, and he’s deserved to start. Maybe Mays just isn’t showing what he needs to show. But think of all the players who don’t play much as freshmen, but contribute a lot later. I expect Mays will be a solid contributor in time.

I’m guardedly optimistic that we will continue to improve next year, though I’d love to see us land another big recruit.

  21. packbackr04 03/09/2009 at 1:41 PM #

scratch that, that injury was a pic of a bikcycle rider with the same name as that Aussie

  22. primacyone 03/09/2009 at 1:45 PM #

    Food for thought.

    Last 5 games(Credit PP poster):
    Costner: 30.2 mpg, 7.2 ppg (5/21 3pt), 5.6 rpg, 2.4 apg, 2 TO pg, 1 bpg
    Horner: 24.2 mpg, 8.8 ppg (8/17 3pt), 3.4 rpg, 1.4 apg, 0.6 TO pg, 0.2 bpg

I’ll say it here first: Scott Wood will be an all time ACC top 5 scorer when he graduates.

Richard Howell is the second coming of Tracy Smith, only better and more confident.

Lo Brown is good enough for all of us and then some.

  23. wufpup76 03/09/2009 at 1:56 PM #

^^Chop, does your starting lineup assume that Costner will not be on next season’s roster?

I agree with Rochester that the PG spot and Javi would not be the biggest weakness on next season’s team. The kid has come a long way, and is a serviceable starter who will hopefully continue to improve. If he keeps knocking down open jumpers it makes the offense that much more dangerous, and helps him set up dribble penetration.

As for Mays lack of minutes, most of us wanted the sub patterns and rotations to get straightened out and for the bench to shrink some. I’ll buy coach’s comments that what happens on the practice floor matters, and right now Javi and Farnold are beating out Mays in the rotation at the 1. Coach Strickland was quoted in the paper a couple of weeks back as saying Julius knows what he needs to do in practice in order to earn time.

On the one hand, we want a shorter bench and more sensible sub patterns. On the other we want to know why x player is not getting time. In this instance I’ll side with the coaches who are saying that practice and matchups are determining who gets time. Coach Lowe intimated that Ferguson, for example, got the nod on Saturday b/c they knew they would face a lot of zone and he wanted Fergs out there to stretch the zone some.

I do not believe that they have given up on Julius, JT, or anyone else who has not seen a lot of time recently. A lot of us wanted a performance based organization, and earning it in practice is just that … so I’ll buy that. We’ve seen that Julius and JT have some upside, but if the rotation is to be shortened someone will lose some time – it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be ready at a moment’s notice like Fergs was Saturday. That’s how an upperclassman should act – don’t complain and be ready to produce when you get your shot … that’s leadership.

  24. Ed89 03/09/2009 at 1:57 PM #

I agree, Choppack1 and primacyone. I generally don’t like one and dones, but in the case of Wall, I think we will be okay, as we have Harrow coming in the following year, and Javi will be a seasoned Senior by that time. It would be nice to have Wall, but I do think that Javi is making great strides. If we can land the 7′ Aussie, that would be a nice addition. Good stats pointing out that Horner is playing better than Costner of late. If Horner keeps gaining confidence, he will be a tough match-up at the four for most teams because of his ability to step out and drain the three.

  25. wufpup76 03/09/2009 at 2:02 PM #

^Horner has been doing better than ever on the boards as of late as well. I didn’t know if he’d ever be able to get a tough rebound with as small as he was his freshman season.

This is not to say I’ve given up on Costner. I’d like to see him back, which I’m sure is a minority opinion. But he is a good passer and better rebounder than he is given credit for.
