Cousins to Memphis; Is John Wall Next?

SI.com has the news and SLAM has the quotes and the N&O has it on Monday.

“Me and my family came to a decision after talking about it. We just thought it was the best place for me to be,” said Cousins this morning. “Everything about the school, the city, whole visit was impressive. I already liked Memphis, so the visit was just icing on the cake.”

“Winning a national championship, that’s my number-one goal [as a freshman next season],” stated Cousins. “Whatever Cal [Memphis head coach John Calipari] needs me to do, I’ll do it. However I have to fit in, I’m willing to do it.”

Expect Cousins, currently ranked second in the SLAM Fresh 50, to have a brief tenure at Memphis, as in one-and-done, if he plays up to his potential. A physical force in the paint, Cousins has a solid back-to-the-basket game, but is also capable of stepping out to hit mid-range jumpers consistently and put the ball on the floor well for a player of his size. In addition, he’s an excellent passer, both in the halfcourt and when making outlet passes to start the fast break, something Memphis excels at. If he commits himself to getting in tip-top shape and decides to dominate both ends of the glass, as well as providing a defensive presence at all times, his upside is as high as any player’s in the senior class.

Since he has all the tools to be an elite baller in the college game (and beyond), a motivator like Calipari and Memphis’ style of play should serve him well.

“He [Cal] just shoots straightforward with you,” said Cousins. “He’s a tough person, but also loves you and that’s what I was looking for.”

Now that Cousins is off of the Wolfpack’s radar the attention of many Wolfpack fans will turn to point guard phenom, John Wall.

Wall’s announcement could come at any time, but there has been whispering amongst college recruiting circles that the same Memphis Tigers who just landed DeMarcus Cousins may have emerged as a leader for Wall.

Just last week the N&O’s Luke DeCock wrote a fantastic article explaining how John Wall could be a success at NC State that would transcend whatever his on-the-court achievements. The article takes the form of letter to Wall and is something that you should definitely read if you have not.

It’s not like you could go wrong at either of those schools, but at N.C. State, you have a chance to do so much more.

You have a chance to make an impact that will last far beyond the one year you play there. You will be giving something back to the community where you were raised. And you will have a chance to play in the best league in the country, in front of all your friends and family.

[snip]

Perhaps more important, you’re only going to spend one year in college. At Memphis or Baylor, you will come and go like the wind. One plays in a mediocre conference, the other has a mediocre basketball history. N.C. State blows both away in both categories.

There’s a rich basketball tradition at N.C. State, but it needs a modern-day booster shot. Herb Sendek couldn’t do it, no matter how many times he went to the NCAA Tournament. You could, even if you stay for only a year.

As much as it helps N.C. State to have players like you (and Derrick Favors, who chose Georgia Tech) considering the Pack, if you actually played there you would raise the school’s profile among potential recruits who weren’t alive in 1983 and who don’t know Reynolds Coliseum from Reynolds Wrap.

That generation, your successors, would be thinking of you when they added N.C. State to their lists, creating a legacy that will last long after your first shoe deal expires.

Whatever you choose, there are no wrong answers. A wonderful basketball career stretches out before you. But it’s worth giving a second thought to staying home before you leave to head down that road.

Something that we have not yet covered in detail is the issue of Dwon Clifton and the potential ‘package deal’ for Wall. ESPN’s Outside the Lines recently ran a report on package deals that included a focus on Wall that can be seen by clicking here.

We expect the Wolfpack to probably sign two more players for next year’s recruting class – including at least one more post player. That player could be Australian, Jordan Vandenberg. Additionally, there is some speculation that State could move Julius Mays to a shooting guard position and still target a point guard in this upcoming class.

Missing on Derrick Favors and DeMarcus Cousins may mean that Coach Lowe’s biggest recruit next year may be Brandon Costner. Moving Costner back to the power forward position alongside Tracy Smith in the post could work well for both the Wolfpack and Costner’s development. This would allow State to free-up the point guard and wing positions for both the returning players as well as highly regarded recruits, Lorenzo Brown and Scott Wood. You can see the most recent comments and links that we have regarding Costner’s future plans by clicking here.

^ UMass was not a big time program more middle major in fact it was in the yankee conference (all the new enganld schools minus uconn ,not eaxactly a powerhouse) I saw Dr J in college a great rebounder he was a great rebounder, but he did not resemble the palyer he became.
So cal not only had success there he built up a program.

The old saying that success breeds success is true. Calipari has a track record and some good athletes now State has a dream and an unproven coach (which is not a criticism of Sid’s capability to accomplish great things given the same talent) and to a kid who wants to spend his one year in college at a school with a current chance to win the NCAAT — then we are not yet that team. We are just a team building for the future and about 5 to 10 steps behind our neighbors. And if Sid is forced out — we will drop 10 to 20 steps behind them.

Why people are surprised at all by this development is beyond me. Did you really think that Walls and Cousins would be coming here?

Did you really think that Walls and Cousins would be coming here?

No. They probably took a lesson from Calipari and just used us to drive up the haul they’re going to pull in from the Memphis boosters.

^ You would think that folks would have recognized that there was a reason that we have spent such little time covering Cousins here.

SFN – If you guys knew it – why didn’t our staff? Not really a rhetorical question – but one that begs an answer. Are we looking at someone else on his team?

  7. tvp1 03/09/2009 at 10:12 AM #

“I have a feeling that at this time next year, we will be debating whether winning 7 games in a weaker ACC constitutes improvement or not. I’m really looking forward to that discussion.”

BJD – two months ago I would have said we’d be looking at a 4-5 win team next year without Wall/Cousins/Favors. But now I’m starting to think that next year’s team will be decent even without any of the stud recruits.

Starting with the VT game (our stretch of decent play) the two key guys have been Smith and Javy. 14.5 ppg/7 rpg for Smith, 11 ppg/4 assists for Javy. And that’s with Javy going against Rice, Lawson, Teague, etc. – guys who won’t by here next year. Javy has even cut down on his TOs of late. There’s no reason to think he can’t match or better that level of play next year.

The second source of my optimism are the rumors (yeah, I know) of late that Costner has had a change of heart and is likely to come back (a good move for him at this point IMO).

A core of Javy/Smith/Costner/Brown should be able to contend for an NCAA bid.

As for recruiting, bring in a big man prospect. 7 footer from Australia? Sure, why not – even Schenschuer (sp?) was decent by the time he left GT. I agree that there’s no need to take a PG project, unless you think Degand is leaving early and Mays can’t play point.

Yeah, no offense, you guys are a good resource, but when all you do is hint around at your fantastic inside connections, it’s hard to take your word as gospel.

“Under the leadership of then-head coach John Calipari and players such as 1996 National Player of the Year Marcus Camby, Harper Williams and Lou Roe, the Minutemen participated in the NCAA Tournament each year between 1992 and 1998, and reached the Final Four in 1996. However, a subsequent NCAA investigation found that Camby illegally accepted a total of $28,000 from sports agents that were attempting to lure him into the NBA Draft after his Sophomore season, and the school was forced to vacate its Final Four appearance as well as return their 1996 NCAA Final Four trophy. Camby eventually repaid the school the $151,000 in lost Final Four revenue that came as a result of the NCAA’s ruling. While a Final Four banner still hangs from the rafters of the Mullins Center in defiance of the NCAA’s ruling, the appearance is marked with an asterisk in official record books.” Is accepting $28,000 worse than selling a pair of shoes and some tickets?? I would think so…

He’s still a questionable coach in my book. Something is amiss if the #1, #2 and #3 Rivals players all pick Memphis. Also, Memphis has 3 Seniors on their current team. They’ve already got 5 commits for next year, and they’re looking to add a 6th? Doesn’t add up. I’m just saying…

  10. wufpup76 03/09/2009 at 10:16 AM #

“While it stinks to lose Cousins, it will be far more damaging if Leslie reopens his recruitment and doesn’t sign w/ us.”

^This would be a tremendously bad sign. Someone asked about the rumors and the like – and the N&O (naturally) had a little article on his wavering. Funny how that type of article shows up for N.C. State.

“Wall’s announcement could come at any time, but there has been whispering amongst college recruiting circles that the same Memphis Tigers who just landed DeMarcus Cousins may have emerged as a leader for Wall.”

^I’m shocked. It may be construed as hate though if I say anything that could be considered improper about the upstanding Coach Calipari and his obviously student-athlete first Memphis Tigers. So I just won’t go there …

I’m not the one with the inside sources here, but I will say this much: we never made wild claims that didn’t hold any water, like other sites did.

How many steps back did Providence take this year when they hired Keno Davis?

“Herb Sendek hit the ground running. Everyone remembers the players he brought in”

Yes and MANY of them left when they found out what a joke the man was. It was a program killer to have one or two guys transferring out of the program every year and nationally making it know that this State program is a disaster.

Cousins was a long shot for us to say the very least. One thing i read and i PRAY doesnt happen is we try to pick up another guard. that is the last thing we need is a low star, low calibur, last min recruit (javi) that really isnt a true ACC player. Our guard play has improved and will continue to get better with sid helping continue the progression of good players. Lorenzo is a great Combo guard and can run a play if we need.

John Wall will more than likley not attend nc state university so we need to have a plan on what to do. Ryan Harrow (Junior point guard commited averaging close to 30pts 12assists) is the best point guard we have gotten in prob 10 years. he is the real deal that will score, pass and run fastbreaks. We can make it to ’11 w/o bringing on a walkon calibur player just because we got burned on a few top level recruits and had an extra scholarship. If I was sid and I didnt land Wall, I would spend one on a big man, if i could find one who could actually contribute, not like Bartosz Lewandowski who was a waste of a scholarship for 2 years.

Keeping Brandon Costner becomes VITAL. If we are able to do that we keep a good offensive punch. I would still keep brandon at the 3 spot and leave the C and PF to smith and horner (or howell dep on how ready he is). CJ leslie comes on campus the following year so we are potentially looking at a very formatable post production with Smith, Leslie, and Howell.

Remember this, last year we had 2 recruits, both 3 stars. this year we missed out on 3 of our targeted recruits and we still landed two 4 star players and an extremly underrated 3 star. Big improvement. Lorenzo is a top 10 guard in the nation. Howell is an old school battler that will work hard every single time he hits the floor (similar to smith, both 4 stars both underrated and undersized). This doesnt make next year a washout for us. our core of young players return and now we have what seemed to be missing from our big 3 seinors, Heart…..

Next year we could be looking at a line up something like this….

PG- Javi/Degand/Mays/Brown (whoever works hardest this summer)
    SG- Brown/CJ/Wood
    SF- Costner/Thomas/Wood
    PF- Horner/Howell
    C- Smith

That line up could contented with any team in the confrence…….

    in ’11

    PG- Harrow/Mays
    SG- Brown/Wood
    SF- Thomas/CJ
    PF- Leslie/Howell
    C- Smith

Now this lineup is EXCITING……….. ITS COMING……..

    Noah:
1)We can write volumes to the players Robinson either missed (Stackhouse, Donald Williams, Ray Allen, etc), let go (Ivan Wagner [left for Texas] Chuck Kornegay [left for UCONN]), or just plain passed on (Terrell McIntyre).

    2) The only players Herb put into the draft were Hodge, Powell, Simmons and Wilkins, and those were deep in his tenure AFTER Larry Harris arrived (1995-1996 season). Before that Shea Cotton was our best recruit and he never showed up (albeit, that was not Herb’s fault).

    3) As has been pointed out by many of the posters and fans this season, our ONLY seniors and juniors are Herb’s recruits. Degand is a transfer, as was Marques Johnson. Sid has taken players (as we a re fully aware) that BOTH do not fit his system AND are not-ACC caliber players because he needed bodies. Les Robinson started with Fire, Ice and Gugs already here when he arrived. He should have been able to maintain; he couldn’t. Herb was facing an empty barrel with his first class, so the comparisons between Herb and Sid are vaild. However, in my estimation, Sid is ahead in both recruiting and coaching in where Herb was after three seasons.

If I were setting gambling lines, I would say that it is more likely that CJ Leslie doesn’t come here than (i) Brandon Costner coming back for his senior year; or (ii) John Wall signing with us.

SFN has a pretty damned good track record – but of course, you’re welcome to not trust what we say (or hint). Free country, you know.

  20. Noah 03/09/2009 at 10:52 AM #

Yes and MANY of them left when they found out what a joke the man was. It was a program killer to have one or two guys transferring out of the program every year and nationally making it know that this State program is a disaster.

    An entirely different argument altogether.

I think Mcintyre was a Herb-miss, wasn’t he? But otherwise, that’s true…but not relevant to the discussion.

The only players Herb put into the draft were Hodge, Powell, Simmons and Wilkins, and those were deep in his tenure AFTER Larry Harris arrived (1995-1996 season). Before that Shea Cotton was our best recruit and he never showed up (albeit, that was not Herb’s fault).

We’re just talking recruiting here. Pure #s.

Sid has taken players (as we a re fully aware) that BOTH do not fit his system AND are not-ACC caliber players because he needed bodies. Taking players to add bodies to the bench is stupid and costs you far more in the end than saving the scholarship.

I disagree that Lowe is ahead of Sendek. Lowe’s first two classes were largely total wastelands. Sendek’s first class gave four years of mediocre production. His second class actually had two good players in it (Harrington and Keith Bean). They just performed well somewhere else. Harrington made it to the NBA and Bean was a pretty solid player for Tex. A&M.

My ultimate point was…every coach NC State recruits well. It’s like patting yourself for bringing in a top-20 class in football if you’re the coach at USC. It’s not really an accomplishment.

  21. Sw0rdf1sh 03/09/2009 at 10:55 AM #

For a second I was just perplexed at how many doomsayers there are out there after some bad news….and then I remembered that we are State fans and our populous includes many more half empty’s than half fulls.

I for one, did not expect to get Cousins. It was said he was to originally official for the MD game, and when that didn’t happen, I was especially concerned. Memphis feels like it could be right up his alley, so now this big Aussie seems to be on the clock.

Regarding Wall, I still think there is a great chance he could come here. But you know what, it is his decision, and I hope he will be happy with which ever program he intends to help. He is a hometown guy that has been through some unusual circumstances and one hell of a spotlight thrown on him. He will hopefully skyrocket to the NBA and have a long successful career. His teammate will be playing at NCSU probably about the time his rookie season starts, and Mr. Leslie is pretty darn skillful too. As that past article said, he could provide much more to this program, this University, and this town than any of his other possible choices. So if that is something that is important to him, yeah….he could come here.

Lowe & Staff recruiting just can’t be knocked as bad as it has been either. They are all good, quality men, and in my opinion have done a great job with what they have stacked up against them. Brown, Howell, Wood along with Leslie and Harrow completely blow the doors off what I expected, and I’m stoked to see these guys suit up.

  22. BJD95 03/09/2009 at 10:59 AM #

This coming class is GOOD, but it’s not GREAT. After the past three classes, we really needed a great one.

To add to Noah’s point, adding “warm bodies” meant we only had 2 scholarships to give out in our last class – and both went early to guys in the 100-150 range (CJ Williams and Julius Mays). Now, these guys are solid role players – but a class like that is not how you build a winner in the ACC. Guys like CJ and Mays can be your 3rd and 4th players in your haul – but not your headliners.

The class before that was pretty much wasted when we built zero program momentum with our “one and done” first-round draft pick.

This all adds up to trouble brewing on the horizon.

  23. BJD95 03/09/2009 at 11:04 AM #

This coaching staff needs an assistant that can teach defense in the worst possible way (that same phrase can accurately describe how we have played defense since Sidney Lowe has been here). I think it’s absolutely essential that we get some new blood on staff.

If John Wall wanted to be a savior for NC State University or the City of Raleigh, then he would have signed already. He hasn’t. Based on what I’ve read, heard, and discerned, we have no more than a 5% chance to get him.

  24. choppack1 03/09/2009 at 11:05 AM #

“However, in my estimation, Sid is ahead in both recruiting and coaching in where Herb was after three seasons.”

What are you basing this on? Their record is the same in the regular season – 15-33. The ACC tournament record for HWSBMN in his first 3 years -5-3, Sid’s thus far, 3-2. If Sid wins’ two tourney games (which I think is a possibility) – he’ll have an equal overall ACC record in an unbalanced ACC.

In order for your case to have some factual credibility and not solely based on feelings, Sid needs to make it to the ACC tournament championship again. Like I said, I definitely think that’s doable. But right now, there just isn’t a lot of evidence to support the Sidney > previous coach contention other than “I like Coach A better than B”.

I do think Sid’s ceiling is higher than that other coach.

Wolfpup – that’s great news on Fells.

  25. Pack Leader 03/09/2009 at 11:06 AM #

I agree BJD except the fact that u say our class with the “one and done” was a waste and built zero program. I disagree Smith was appart of that class and he is turning out to be our best player!! Thomas also came in with that class and i still beleive he will start for us one day assuming his knee is all better.

the “one and done” player, hickson, was not the problem when he was here, did his job while he was on the floor, and even won some games for us. Who knows Larry Harris being able to open doors in Georgia to get him very well may have helped us land our top two recruits this year both being 4 stars(brown, howell) and also helped us put our foot in the door throughout the state.

So i guess i dont agree when you say that built zero momentum. I feel last years class was a backstep, having 2 recruits who if we plan on condending none of them will be a starter.
