Day of roster changes for Wolfpack BBall (3/24 Update @ 12pm)

RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State head men’s basketball coach Sidney Lowe has announced that redshirt juniors Brandon Costner and Trevor Ferguson will forego their final year of eligibility, and not return to the Wolfpack in 2009-10.

Joe Giglio at ACCNow has a more on the roster changes at this link. He also discusses the Wolfpack’s new recruit – Josh Davis – that was already being discussed in our comments section.

Davis, a 6-5 forward, is a “tweener,” Telep said, who will add frontcourt depth for the Wolfpack, which lost Costner, a versatile forward who decided to go pro on Monday.

“They added a really nice player, with great character, who wanted to be a part of the program,” said Telep, who has Davis rated as a two-star prospect.

Additionally, Ken Tysiac added the following:

Davis averaged 25.7 points and 12 rebounds per game this season as a senior. He had been considering UNC Wilmington and had scholarship offers from Gardner-Webb and High Point. Seton Hall’s staff also wanted Davis to make a campus visit, Clemons said.

“He’s always wanted to go (to N.C. State),” Clemons said. “He always talked about N.C. State. That was his school. He worked hard enough, and was able to get an offer.”

Clemons said Davis can score on the block as a power forward and is skilled enough to play small forward.

As our readers pointed out in the comments section, there are some pros and cons to offering/accepting Davis’ commitment. I must admit I am a little perplexed by the use of the scholarship and also a little concerned at the message of potential desperation that the scholarship sends. To be very clear – I KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING – but, the addition of a local kid (Athens Drive HS) that is clearly not ACC caliber talent could potentially mean that the use of the scholarship is ‘flexible’. I can only hope that *potentially* Davis gets to use the scholarship as long as the program does not need it for another, highly-rated player in this class or the future.

By all accounts, Davis is kid of high character who wanted to be a part of the program. He loves NC State and exhibits true heart and passion on the court. (Certainly something that has been lacking from our program for a long time). He averaged over 25 points a game in high school and was considered as good or better of a player than the two ‘stars’ in his conference – Earnest Ross (Auburn signee) and Garrius Adams (Miami signee).

Davis is described as a very athletic, but undersized ‘hustle player’ akin to a Simon Harris &/or Johnny Thomas (who is already on the Wolfpack’s roster). He has been recruited to play the wing forward position at State.

But, at 6’5 he not a ‘tweener’ for the only position that existing skills set supports – power forward – as his outside shooting is weak. There seems to be some debate if Seton Hall was truly looking at Davis and it appears that State ‘beat’ Gardner-Webb, Charleston Southern and High Point for Davis.

There is most definitely a fit for a Josh Davis within NC State’s Basketball program; but, I am not necessarily convinced that there is an ideal fit for Josh Davis within the current state of the Wolfpack’s program with the current composition of our roster and scholarship spacing. In light of Johnny Thomas’ presence on the roster and sophomore status, it is fair to ask the question if we have ‘over-recruited’ the ‘undersized, high character, sleeper role on the wing’. As one of our readers said, “I hope someone knows more than anybody else here or gets this kid on the juice but this seems strange even by our standards.”

Much is made about State’s struggles and needs at the point guard position…and, Ryan Harrow may be scheduled to arrive in Raleigh one year too late for Coach Lowe. But, I see an even more glaring deficiency on the Wolfpack’s roster after the departure of Brandon Costner – NC State desperately needs some size, heft and toughness in the post. Despite the addition of Richard Howell in the 2009 recruiting class, an ‘ideal’ candidate for one of the Wolfpack’s remaining scholarships would be a junior college big man – preferably a true center of close to 7 feet – who can defend, block shots and rebound. Additionally, this would be ideal for current and future scholarship spacing needs.

Of course, there is still a very small chance that NC State pulls a rabbit out of the hat and can land the nation’s top remaining recruit, John Wall. Wall’s presence may not only help boost next season’s performance, but it would also send a message to other top recruits that NC State is a place to be. (Not to mention its potential impact on re-solidifying CJ Leslie’s commitment. Oddly, landing Wall may not only be great for next year’s performance, but also for the importance of long term spacing of scholarships for the program.

Looking Forward
If State is unable to ultimately land John Wall, I agree with Giglio’s assessment of next season’s line-up:

On paper, State’s starting lineup looks like: Javier Gonzalez at the point, Brown at the 2-guard, C.J. Williams at small forward, Howell at the 4 and Smith at center.

Off the bench State has guards Julius Mays, Farnold Degand and Wood. At forward, Dennis Horner and Johnny Thomas are the other returning scholarship players, plus Davis.

Additionally, Ken Tysiac has added a great blog entry about the Wolfpack’s prospects next year that can be seen here.

When you look at the roster the Wolfpack has returning, it’s impossible to deduce that the team will be better off without Costner and reserve guard Trevor Ferguson, who also is leaving.

[snip]

As a whole, this roster will not scare North Carolina when it gets off the bus next season at the Smith Center. Against the rest of the ACC, N.C. State might hold up OK because there is a lot of backcourt talent leaving from the traditional middle-of-the-pack schools.

Toney Douglas, Tyrese Rice and Jack McClinton all were seniors, and Maryland’s Greivis Vasquez has already announced his intention to test the NBA waters.

But hoping the competition falls back to N.C. State’s level is not a where the Wolfpack hoped to be in Sidney Lowe’s fourth season.

Coach Sidney Lowe’s incoming recruiting class might turn out to be his best yet. But the members of his past classes will be sophomores and juniors next season comprising the bulk of N.C. State’s roster. Lowe’s initial difficulties gaining a foothold as a recruiter after coming to N.C. State from the NBA look like they will come home to roost next season.

“Scott Wood is one of those guys who will be a good player by his junior year I think Howell will be a reserve who could see some minutes.”

    I disagree 100%

Howell was ranked by Bob gibbons as a high impact in the acc than brown and brown is a top 10 guard in the nation. He will be a battler down low and i expect him to pull in 15-20 min a night. (who else will be down low besides smith and horner? or god forbid if they get hurt!)

Wood is a true shooting guard who played alot of point this year at 6’4″-6’5″. We have a lack of shooters next year returning esp at the SG SF position. If fergi can start a few games, then im POSITIVE Wood will get a look at a postion. he was voted 2nd in the prestigious mr indiana basketball beating out two 5 star recruits….. expect big things out of wood esp if lowe looks a brown at pg early….

alot of people are putting down our recruits even though they are right now with 3 signings the number 17 class in the nation….. highest we have had in close to 4 years.

we have said it all offseason, whos going to score the points on the team next year??? FRESHMAN

“Let’s NOT go down this road. That debate is over, done, and has a fork sticking out of it’s well done arse.”

Yes, I totally agree. Which is why I hated making the comparison. I had no intention of debating Sid v you-know-who. My point is, however, that it is obviously possible to greatly improve a D1 BB program in three years, even at a “non-BB school.” So what does that say about Foulup’s great BB HC hire and where NCSU BB is now after three years! And while it sounds like the new commit is a really good guy, it is obviously VERY debatable as to why he was offered looking at the current 2009-2010 roster, aside from there being merely a great need now for just bodies – seems symptomatic of a program in decline (or worse.)

P.J. Tucker was also a McDonalds All American

  4. BJD95 03/24/2009 at 10:00 AM #

Noah is right – this roster is full of role players. It’s like having all your pawns left in a game of chess, but only one or two more powerful pieces (Brown and Smith).

Glue guys are indeed good to have on the roster. Everybody needs a couple of them. But when you have a roster full of guys who aren’t stellar in even one area (i.e., stars), or plus players in all areas (i.e., well-rounded starters) – you are going to get worked.

It’s all traceable to a coaching staff that came into the job not understanding how to construct a roster, and either (i) hasn’t learned very much in three years; and/or (ii) is in full-blown panic mode.

Oh and btw size isnt an issue he went up against i guy 6-11 slammed on him to hes just those athletic kind of guys and he always hustles I remember asking him 2 months ago where he was going and he said state i didnt understand why considering he had so much potential but i was happy when they said we were lsing costner and its official Josh is going to play for the wolfpack he has great hops and ive noticed he has a nice jumper form about 12 feet-11 feet inside he always scores

  6. Noah 03/24/2009 at 10:06 AM #

PJ Tucker’s problem was that he had terrible grades. Had he qualified early, he probably would have been here.

BUT…since Josh Davis is AWESOME, I guess Sidney Lowe is all out of excuses.

He has a team full of players that he recruited. Scott Wood is going to dominate, Howell is going to dominate, Davis is AWESOME and will SHRED our opponents, Brown is a top-10 player.

Hey…we’re going to be awesome. In fact, if we play Broughton High School next year, we will TOTALLY kick their ass.

  7. packbackr04 03/24/2009 at 10:06 AM #

YEAH, he always scores against Apex High and Panther Creek. this is the ACC, he is going to have a tough time getting his shot off over much less dunking on James Johnson or Al-Farouq Aminu…

  8. choppack1 03/24/2009 at 10:08 AM #

    Rochester – I think that’s a valid point.

I admit that I am worried about what Sid is planning to do w/ this slew of guys between 6-4 and 6-6 on our roster w/ a very similar skillset.

And the way it’s starting to look to me, is that our next coach will have to be someone who is used to winning w/out a lot of size.

It will be interesting to see if we make a transition from a plodding, pound the ball inside team to a team w/ a defense that tries to keep the ball in front of them, instead of applying pressure to one that relies on getting points off D through TOs and fast breaks. Like I’ve said, there are plenty of coaches who do that, our current coach hasn’t shown that he’s willing to do that in spite of statements to the contrary.

  9. pakfanistan 03/24/2009 at 10:09 AM #

Well, that doesn’t really help us. We already have two 6-5 wing guys that are good athletes and neither one of them are winning us a whole lot of games these days.

I think CJ Williams went a long way in helping us win both the Virginia and Wake Forest games. He’s a respectable outside shooter and with our poo zone offense, that’s pretty important. I know nobody likes to give Lowe a pass for anything, but he gets a pass from me for Johnny Thomas. He looks like he could have been a really decent player for us if not for that knee injury.

  10. packpigskinfan23 03/24/2009 at 10:12 AM #

The kid obviously worked very hard to get where he got with little national coverage. I too question where Sid is going with this, but this is not a MJohnson panic recruit that couldnt make it at his old school… this is a local kid that worked hard to be a part of the Wolfpack(which he loves)- and I for one am willing to reserve judgment till at least his sophomore year.

  11. BJD95 03/24/2009 at 10:15 AM #

CJ Williams can shoot when left open. Johnny Thomas can rebound. Josh Davis apparently can defend (we’ll see if this translates to the college level, when things speed up considerably).

Combine all of those traits, and you have a very useful player (regardless of size). But you need those traits in one guy (or at least 2 of those 3 traits), not spread out among three guys that all should play the SF position.

Noah, Im all for sarcasm and smart ass comments, but ill follow your line of thought. ok so according to you, none of our freshman will be able to contribute more than a few bench mins a game. So from our team last year, the returns who will have to score 60-75 points a game are…

Horner, Smith, Javi, Mays, and Williams….
    thats 15 points a game per person…..
    that will def happen there….

Horner is def all confrence on the block and surellyyy will learn how to box out even though he is just an oversized SF who can pick and shoot 3s.

Williams will be come our go to scorer and will beable to average 20+ pts a game and guard the opponents best scorer huh…….

Yeah like i said earlier… our freshman will score most of our points next year…. unless there is a team full of scorers i missed somewhere…..

  14. statered 03/24/2009 at 10:23 AM #

At the very least should Sid not last beyond next year we should have a vastly more athletic bangs the boards type of line up than the one he inherited. It will make it much easier for the next coach provided he runs a normal offense and not some princeton hybrid crap.

  15. BJD95 03/24/2009 at 10:24 AM #

As UVA proved this year, when you have a bare cupboard, somebody ends up scoring by default. So I don’t know who it will be, but certainly somebody will end up scoring much more than expected.

Dance with this roster, Sid – and I will be impressed. Otherwise, hit the road. Four years is enough for this experiment unless there is clear, unmistakeable success.

UVA’s leading scorer was a freshman, and that didn’t save Dave Leitao. Nor should it have.

  16. burnbarn 03/24/2009 at 10:34 AM #

I say this team has a better record in and out of conference that the current team. We ain’t gonna contend for the conference championship next season.
Yes, it has been 20+ years of waiting, but that ain’t Lowe’s fault.

    Let the man coach.

  17. Dan 03/24/2009 at 10:44 AM #

The best thing that Sid could for our program is resign in some fashion takes Fowler down with him.

  18. Clarksa 03/24/2009 at 10:48 AM #

Josh Davis is the type of player that had he not accepted an offer to play at NC State, he would turn into a star somewhere else and people would be wondering why we “let one get away.”

  19. JimValvano 03/24/2009 at 10:58 AM #

I think at least one person missed the point of my comment…sometimes recruiting services are wrong about kids. I’m not gonna bad mouth any of our recruits. And for your information…little league is baseball. Basketball was just divided by age groups.

With that said, I do agree that our roster looks a little…little. I also think that Coach Lowe is/should be starting to feel the heat. I do think, however, that Javi has developed into a fairly good point guard. If he can keep his emotions under control a little better (which will get his turnovers down) then he should be able to give us 10-12pts/game with 3/4 assists per game…not to mention his steals and deflections. I could go over our entire roster, but all it would do is confirm that inside we’ve got Tracy Smith, Richard Howell, and a small forward with power forward height in Horner. We do need to find a recruit with some height to round out this class, and if we do…then…there is a small possibility that Sid coaches his way into having the job for one more season.

I think that Fouler hired a guy that wasn’t ready for the job, and Fouler should be fired. On the other hand, I think Sid might find a way to do well. He’s just had to do too much learning. Its a shame that we’re in this situation. The current roster does suggest that Sid is most likely coaching his last Wolfpack team.

Maybe we can steal another coach from Boston College…

    Sean Miller wouldn’t be a bad grab…

Or maybe we could just hire some of your geniuses that think you know everything about every sport…or maybe they could hire my little league coach.

  20. BJD95 03/24/2009 at 11:05 AM #

Nobody’s asking him to contend for the conference championship. Just make the damned tournament. 7 ACC teams did so in 2008-09. It’s not too much to ask to be in the Top 65 by Year Four.

In the 3 seasons that Sidney Lowe has been head coach, the only ACC team not to make the NCAAT is NC State. That being the case, I don’t see how expecting him to make it in his fourth season is in any way unfair as a minimum benchmark.

  21. sautz 03/24/2009 at 11:17 AM #

I don’t know what to say looking at that roster. 1 win? 9 wins? Too many variables, but I am leaning towards 1 win.

  22. Justin Gainey 03/24/2009 at 11:27 AM #

Guys, on Josh Davis. Give him a chance. Rivals ranks are BS at times. Russel Wilson was a two star recruit. He turned out pretty damn good. Josh Davis averaged 25points his senior year, that is more than a Trevor Fergason did. I will take him over fergie any day of the week. Plus he loves NC state, so their will be passion and he will have a no quit attitude. I bet he will be the spark of the team. He will be our motivator player. Watch and see!!

  23. Wolfpack_1995 03/24/2009 at 11:27 AM #

With this roster we probably barely make the NIT IMO.

Sure we’ll see effort but that doesn’t mean squat in the Win/Loss column.

By next year Sid will have had 4yrs to qualify for the NCAAT? WTF? Even the former coach was held to higher standards.

How much of the 83 “glory” is Sid going to be able to milk from? He is proving to be a bad coach and even at scholly distribution.

Is the NIT next year good enough for Fowler?

I like the pawn reference in regards to the roster and we have maybe one bishop and one knight on the team.

People please take off the red-tinted glasses and STOP drinking the red kool-aid!

  24. wolfpackattack89 03/24/2009 at 11:29 AM #

If what they say is true about Davis and how hard he works, then I welcome him with open arms. We need hustlers who will lay everything on the line for our Wolfpack. Every one of Sid’s teams has lacked heart and hustle so this can be nothing but an addition in my eyes. Does anyone know our chances of signing another big? Will it possibly be that Aussie? I hope we can sign someone who is around 7’0”

Not necessary to bad mouth our recruits, coaches, or administration. That is being taken care of by a goodly number on this site. Try to remember that this is not a Tarhole sit as you read the posts here. These are actually friends of the Pack and thank goodness, with some many friends, we won’t be needing any enemies putting us down.
