Day of roster changes for Wolfpack BBall (3/24 Update @ 12pm)

RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State head men’s basketball coach Sidney Lowe has announced that redshirt juniors Brandon Costner and Trevor Ferguson will forego their final year of eligibility, and not return to the Wolfpack in 2009-10.

Joe Giglio at ACCNow has a more on the roster changes at this link. He also discusses the Wolfpack’s new recruit – Josh Davis – that was already being discussed in our comments section.

Davis, a 6-5 forward, is a “tweener,” Telep said, who will add frontcourt depth for the Wolfpack, which lost Costner, a versatile forward who decided to go pro on Monday.

“They added a really nice player, with great character, who wanted to be a part of the program,” said Telep, who has Davis rated as a two-star prospect.

Additionally, Ken Tysiac added the following:

Davis averaged 25.7 points and 12 rebounds per game this season as a senior. He had been considering UNC Wilmington and had scholarship offers from Gardner-Webb and High Point. Seton Hall’s staff also wanted Davis to make a campus visit, Clemons said.

“He’s always wanted to go (to N.C. State),” Clemons said. “He always talked about N.C. State. That was his school. He worked hard enough, and was able to get an offer.”

Clemons said Davis can score on the block as a power forward and is skilled enough to play small forward.

As our readers pointed out in the comments section, there are some pros and cons to offering/accepting Davis’ commitment. I must admit I am a little perplexed by the use of the scholarship and also a little concerned at the message of potential desperation that the scholarship sends. To be very clear – I KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING – but, the addition of a local kid (Athens Drive HS) that is clearly not ACC caliber talent could potentially mean that the use of the scholarship is ‘flexible’. I can only hope that *potentially* Davis gets to use the scholarship as long as the program does not need it for another, highly-rated player in this class or the future.

By all accounts, Davis is kid of high character who wanted to be a part of the program. He loves NC State and exhibits true heart and passion on the court. (Certainly something that has been lacking from our program for a long time). He averaged over 25 points a game in high school and was considered as good or better of a player than the two ‘stars’ in his conference – Earnest Ross (Auburn signee) and Garrius Adams (Miami signee).

Davis is described as a very athletic, but undersized ‘hustle player’ akin to a Simon Harris &/or Johnny Thomas (who is already on the Wolfpack’s roster). He has been recruited to play the wing forward position at State.

But, at 6’5 he not a ‘tweener’ for the only position that existing skills set supports – power forward – as his outside shooting is weak. There seems to be some debate if Seton Hall was truly looking at Davis and it appears that State ‘beat’ Gardner-Webb, Charleston Southern and High Point for Davis.

There is most definitely a fit for a Josh Davis within NC State’s Basketball program; but, I am not necessarily convinced that there is an ideal fit for Josh Davis within the current state of the Wolfpack’s program with the current composition of our roster and scholarship spacing. In light of Johnny Thomas’ presence on the roster and sophomore status, it is fair to ask the question if we have ‘over-recruited’ the ‘undersized, high character, sleeper role on the wing’. As one of our readers said, “I hope someone knows more than anybody else here or gets this kid on the juice but this seems strange even by our standards.”

Much is made about State’s struggles and needs at the point guard position…and, Ryan Harrow may be scheduled to arrive in Raleigh one year too late for Coach Lowe. But, I see an even more glaring deficiency on the Wolfpack’s roster after the departure of Brandon Costner – NC State desperately needs some size, heft and toughness in the post. Despite the addition of Richard Howell in the 2009 recruiting class, an ‘ideal’ candidate for one of the Wolfpack’s remaining scholarships would be a junior college big man – preferably a true center of close to 7 feet – who can defend, block shots and rebound. Additionally, this would be ideal for current and future scholarship spacing needs.

Of course, there is still a very small chance that NC State pulls a rabbit out of the hat and can land the nation’s top remaining recruit, John Wall. Wall’s presence may not only help boost next season’s performance, but it would also send a message to other top recruits that NC State is a place to be. (Not to mention its potential impact on re-solidifying CJ Leslie’s commitment. Oddly, landing Wall may not only be great for next year’s performance, but also for the importance of long term spacing of scholarships for the program.

Looking Forward
If State is unable to ultimately land John Wall, I agree with Giglio’s assessment of next season’s line-up:

On paper, State’s starting lineup looks like: Javier Gonzalez at the point, Brown at the 2-guard, C.J. Williams at small forward, Howell at the 4 and Smith at center.

Off the bench State has guards Julius Mays, Farnold Degand and Wood. At forward, Dennis Horner and Johnny Thomas are the other returning scholarship players, plus Davis.

Additionally, Ken Tysiac has added a great blog entry about the Wolfpack’s prospects next year that can be seen here.

When you look at the roster the Wolfpack has returning, it’s impossible to deduce that the team will be better off without Costner and reserve guard Trevor Ferguson, who also is leaving.

[snip]

As a whole, this roster will not scare North Carolina when it gets off the bus next season at the Smith Center. Against the rest of the ACC, N.C. State might hold up OK because there is a lot of backcourt talent leaving from the traditional middle-of-the-pack schools.

Toney Douglas, Tyrese Rice and Jack McClinton all were seniors, and Maryland’s Greivis Vasquez has already announced his intention to test the NBA waters.

But hoping the competition falls back to N.C. State’s level is not a where the Wolfpack hoped to be in Sidney Lowe’s fourth season.

Coach Sidney Lowe’s incoming recruiting class might turn out to be his best yet. But the members of his past classes will be sophomores and juniors next season comprising the bulk of N.C. State’s roster. Lowe’s initial difficulties gaining a foothold as a recruiter after coming to N.C. State from the NBA look like they will come home to roost next season.

The message boards say he was leading scorer in a Tri-8, which includes ernest ross and garrius adams. did not play that much aau ball and was not in major tournaments. sounds like he hustles and works hard on his game. had a major growth spurt from 5’10” to 6’6″ and lost his jump shot along the way, very solid defender, sounds like a healthier johnny thomas, still nobody else offered but UNC-W and Seton Hall. Clemson wanted him to prep a year, State had initially thought to have him prep a year, then offered him a scholly. Other comment was that he is a forward in a 2-guard’s body. Some say he’s a project, good fourth pick to round out a class. For what it’s worth, that’s what the boards say. Please let us sign a major rebounder besides Howell.

    Good luck Costner and Fergs.

We’re going to suck again next year. However, if there was a more underachieving coach than Lowe last year it had to be Dino. Biggest waste of talent since the Pyscho D years at UNX.

Sorry a little off topic. But damn u gotta hear this.FUNNY AS ALL SH** of the DAY. I finally will Laugh before I go to BED!!!!!

I seen someone point this out on PP. Our new signee , Josh Davis has went from 2 Stars to 1 Star as rated by Scout since joining the PACK earlier today. (I am Laughing like Hell as I write this) But its True!!!

I had to investigate for myself (Still effing Laughing) after I saw that the person had noted this and sure enough I looked and he had regressed from 2 stars to 1 Star in a matter of hours.

This is really funny to me because Ive seen people say sometimes how a recruit signs with the Dookies or UNC and their stars go UP(example– a 3 star player goes to 5 star)Immediately upon committing with them.

But OH NO not with the PACK!!!!

Our Commits see a Demotion of stars upon commitment!!
    FUNNY!!!HA!I cant stop fu**in laughin!!!!!!!!!

I havent laughed this much since the Les Robinson days!!!!

Local news in Charlottesville reports Tubby is not leaving Minnesota. Swing and a miss. Next up, Jeff Capel, Sean Miller and Grant from VCU. The link is to a very short article.

turnoffthetv-Funny (or should I say F-ing hilarious) that you should mention that because I actually seemed to remember he was a two star as well when visiting earlier. I wonder if he’ll shrink as well.

  7. Noah 03/23/2009 at 9:59 PM #

Is he a massive sleeper or more of a “who’s left to pick up” get?

6’6 kid who is supposed to be a good athlete. He can’t shoot (50 percent free throw shooter, 0-2 on 3s, I believe).

I do not believe that he has any scholarship offers. Seton Hall and UNCW and ODU were looking at him, but I don’t believe anyone had offered him a scholarship.

I *could* be wrong. But I don’t think this is the guy who will save the program next year.

  8. Pack Leader 03/23/2009 at 10:36 PM #

Josh David = Healthy Johnny Thomas.

6’6 – 6’7 depending on who you ask.

Not much of a jumpshot or handles.

    Superior Athleticism and Agressive Rebounding.

Big upside vs Downside. mabey sleeper….

Not going to change a game or a season by far….

Hoping maybe we get a C for next year while Harris and Towe went to watch the Junior College Championship games…

  9. Afterglow 03/23/2009 at 10:43 PM #

This kind of reminds me of my back up plan at Thanksgiving if I happen to need another meal at midnight… leftovers.

Don’t get me wrong, I hope the kid is a KC Rivers type that exceeds his one star status ranking and climbs into a potential NBA Draft pick at the end of his college career but… it kind of feels like Lowe’s back up plan for the year was… leftovers.

I understand going after the five star players but I would hope all along your culling other player recourses that can fill the role if your five stars don’t quite pan out.

  10. Afterglow 03/23/2009 at 10:57 PM #

Not that rank means all that much but shouldn’t it be that Josh David = Unhealthy Johnny Thomas? Seems to me if I remember correctly, Johnny Thomas was a top fifty player at his position and (unless his rating has gone down since) a three star player.

In any event, now that he’s ours, I hope he turns out to be a huge sleeper-speaking of which, it’s getting late.

  11. codebrown 03/23/2009 at 11:09 PM #

What’s our obsession with these average in-state swingmen? And at what point, if you’re Lowe, do you start stock-piling PGs? I mean isn’t that what we need to do?

  12. kyjelly 03/23/2009 at 11:51 PM #

Davis is barely 6’5, a tweener who is neither an acc forward ,or guard a good hs player ,but not heavily recruited at all and certainly not by big time schools. So once again I should not be but I am baffled by the brain trust here. Why not if you are going to throw a scholarship away go to europe and pick up a sleeper.

  13. frankiepack 03/24/2009 at 12:01 AM #

Here is the scoop on our newest recruit pretty much smaller than they say not a guard or forward. Seton Hall was not looking at him .We beat out Gardner-Webb,Charleston Southern and High Point those were his other 3 offers. I hope someone knows more than anybody else here or gets this kid on the juice but this seems strange even by our standards.

  14. Rochester 03/24/2009 at 6:56 AM #

Don’t know anything other than what I read in the N&O about Davis, but he sounds like he loves NC State, so that’s a start. It also sounds like he’s a hustle player. Considering that was our biggest criticism of some of the guys who are leaving, maybe we’ll like this kid.

  15. Sw0rdf1sh 03/24/2009 at 7:02 AM #

Here we go again with people out coaching and out recruiting our coach on the Internets. Don’t be baffled by something the average sports fan can’t comprehend. The fact that Davis was MVP in a field of players that we have gone after in the past should help spell of it out for you.

We lost 2 scholly players in one day and I’m pretty sure Sid and staff knew this weeks ago and started preparing. I can’t complain about the late grab, plus there is some JUCO action and the Aussie in the works. This class might not be finished yet and overall the quality is way up within the quantity.

  16. BJD95 03/24/2009 at 7:11 AM #

Josh Davis sounds exactly like Simon Harris.

Why did Costner leave? He didn’t enjoy the college experience that much, had no desire to go to graduate school, and wasn’t particularly close to any of the players who will return next season. Zero incentive to come back. It’s not like we were going to challenge for titles with him.

Next year we will have a small team that doesn’t shoot particularly well. And that’s the result of poor scholarship spacing and recruiting mistakes by Lowe and staff. They have to make the NCAAs with this hodgepodge roster, or they should be out the door.

I don’t EXPECT this to be an NCAA team, but expectations need to be exceeded in 2009-10. No more baby steps. Not being embarrassing is no longer good enough. This is Year Four. Produce or hit the bricks.

  17. JimValvano 03/24/2009 at 7:14 AM #

I’m not gonna pass judgment on some kid I’ve never seen play. Especially considering what I know. I played on the AAU circuit in high school. Some of the kids I played against ended up in the NBA (Chris Wilcox), some ended up in the ACC (Wilcox, Mike Bell, Scooter Sherrill, Cliff Crawford, Will Johnson), and some others ended up at D-1 programs across the country. I can tell you this, I played with a guy that was better than all of these people and he ended up playing one year at a community college and that was it. This kid wasn’t ranked at all by any of the major recruiting services, but was a 6-3 shooting guard with about a 40″ vertical and could shoot lights out. He was from a small NC High School (Cherryville) and he absolutely dominated Scooter Sherrill both times we met the Charlotte Royals. The first game Sherill ended up with 8 points and this kid, Tarbarac Bell, had 43. The next time we met, Scooter ended up with 19…but Tarbarac Bell again scored in the 40’s. Scooter Sherrill was a McDonald’s All American. Tarbarac Bell went to a community college for one year and I think plays for some semi-pro football team now. Sometimes kids just don’t get the exposure they need, sometimes kids don’t get the grades they need, sometimes you should wait and see the kid first hand before you decide they are the next David Thompson or if they’re the next Brandon Costner or Damien Wilkins. Maybe this kid will be good.

On another note…next year’s team isn’t gonna be all Sid’s. He still has Horner and Degand who were both brought in by Sendek. Just thought I’d mention it.

  18. blackdom 03/24/2009 at 7:25 AM #

So now what are you saying give him another year if he tanks once again, because horner is still here? Will these lame ass excuses ever stop for Sid?
And JV ^ thanks for the background I can’t wait to hear about your little league days.

  19. Sweet jumper 03/24/2009 at 7:28 AM #

Horner was rerecruited by Sid and elected to honor his LOI. Sid is the only coach he has had at NCSU. He is Sid’s.
DeGand should be the next scholly to open up based on his game suspensions for disciplinary reasons(at least twice this year). If he stays, he will not see much time next year with Javi, Mays and Brown in place. Sid should send him packing at the first hint of subversive behavior.

  20. Wulfpack 03/24/2009 at 7:29 AM #

Any takers on how many times we play musical chairs at the PG position next year?

To me, this is THE biggest issue Sid MUST resolve if we are going anywhere next year.

  21. PackMan97 03/24/2009 at 7:30 AM #

Is this the beginning of the end?

  22. Wolfpack_1995 03/24/2009 at 7:43 AM #

Now that all of Sendek’s players are gone Sid can move on.

A lot of talk on other boards about Sid needing to produce next year because the “HEAT” has been turned up by actual Donors.

No postseason next year could spell doom.

I think the demise of Sid could end up being scholarship management if we do not start seeing results. Two 10th place finishes and one 12th place finish does not cut it especially when the former coach had us at least making the NCAAT(which satisfied Fowler).

Sean Miller is just a phone call away.

  23. Rochester 03/24/2009 at 7:43 AM #

Degand was not brought in by Sendek. He transferred in from Iowa State after Sid came here.

  24. ms termeaner 03/24/2009 at 7:45 AM #

swordfish^ Sid and crew have been out coached and out recruited everywhere not just on the internet.
Wulfpack^ I think a bigger issue than the point guards is who in the heck if they do manage to bring the ball up are they going to pass it to?
Sid knew if everyone else knew that brandon was a goner, just like he did know jj was one and done in both cases did he replace either?
It is the end or we will here give him time team is young ,glad for the davis kid but this is the acc not charleston southern although I think we are becoming closer to charleston southern than we are to being a top of the line acc team.

  25. Rochester 03/24/2009 at 7:46 AM #

Oh, and not trying to say Josh Davis will be the next hidden gem like Stephen Curry, but sometimes the recruiting services and big schools miss out on good players, so don’t automatically write the guy off as not worthy just because we haven’t heard much about him.
