CJ Leslie Officially Re-Opens Recruitment

As most regular readers know, SFN has hinted at this development since January, but now that Dave Telep is bringing it into the public domain (note – this is a premium article, so we won’t post any content), we can be more explicit. CJ Leslie has re-opened his commitment, and is no longer an NC State verbal.

We have definitely heard that Memphis will be heavily involved. I have lamented that April 11, 2006 was the day that NC State’s basketball program died, after many years on life support. That was the day John Calipari, arguably the perfect coach for NC State, said no. Go ahead, re-read the Dan Wetzel article we linked and try not to slit your wrists.

And Calipari is the gift that keeps on giving for NC State. Despite self-serving and transparently jealous/defense mechanism comments from some calling Calipari a “thug” or a guy who could only get his players in at Memphis – please note we are fishing from the same waters. DeMarcus Cousins, probably John Wall, and now maybe CJ Leslie. The only difference is that Calipari actually wins these recruiting battles. Does anyone have any doubt who would have come out on top if Calipari was at NC State, and Lowe at Memphis? Didn’t think so.

Now, it’s important to note what this does not mean. We have not been told that Leslie has definitely decided to go elsewhere. He maystill end up at NC State. But publicly de-committing is a very, very bad omen for Sidney Lowe and the health of his program entering the crucial 2009-10 season.

As far as the timing is concerned, we were told that CJ would re-open his commitment at the end of the basketball season. This weekend, he made good on what we were told he would do.

“Coaches don’t publicly lobby for jobs.” That was my point. It would take something ridiculous like that for me to think Fowler could do anything but ruin another coaching search. It would have to be a done deal to expect otherwise. Like say… what happened with TOB. While that wasn’t public lobbying for a job, it was about as close as it gets.

UGG. Herb COULD play the Heels to get into the Final Four. Page one of the N&O “Herb makes Final Four after getting run out of Raleigh!” Page one of the Sports Section: “Heels lose to ASU: Refs ignore fouls on Hansbrough.”

Truthfully, I’ll probably watch ASU’s games and none other. Like the last three years I will not fill out a bracket… what’s the point? I do long for a day when we’re relevant enough to care about the NCAA Tournament again… other than watching to see if we’re going to be joked all over the media again.

Ordinarily, I do NOT try to antagonize others here…I express my opinion…I choose, sometimes, NOT to agree with others…but try to hold my piece….but SOMETIMES….

    Quote for Wulfpack….

“I wasn’t old enough to really know what happened in 1983, so maybe I’m not nearly as partial to one of our own than others. And for that, I’m happy for it. This is a big-time college basketball head coaching position paying big-time dollars. He’s not holding up his end of the bargain.

And for anyone that cares, the NIT, the pinnacle of college basketball, just took a pass on your beloved Wolfpack. If that isn’t damning, I don’t know what is.”

OK…I WUZ here in 1983…I went to Reynolds and saw the V man and the team bring home the trophy. I took my kids, the week before, to RDU and Reynolds to also welcome the team back.

I send a LOT of BREAD to NCSU….This is MY WOLFPACK….Why did you use the word “YOUR”….are you some closet freak from UNX or DOOK just over here to stir up things?

    Whatever your motive is…rightly or wrongly…GO AWAY…

Sid was the ONLY bright spot in Fowler’s FOUL UP in 2006…I learned a LOT of things here then…how to track plane numbers…how to find plane registrations….the one thing, that really stuck out…is the stupidity of the Administration and the MIS-Management of the AD….

SID bailed out Fowler….we were the LAUGHING stock of the country…not just the ACC…I NEVER bashed HWSNBSOH…even though I did NOT like his style of play or his attitude…

I had already purchased my first LTR’s in the Champion’s club, though…I now have 4…

I SUPPORT SID and MY $$’s SUPPORT the WOLFPACK….

I’m running out of things to say without resorting to four letter words to express my loath and wrath for posters like you….

    GOOOOOOOD NIGHT…..

Leslie now is holding Sid hostage. Wants to reopen, look around, but is still high on State. My suggestion to Sid is to pull Leslie’s offer. He can’t have his cake and eat it too.

Push hard for Carthon (he is 5 star guy) and higher rated.
Go get the 6-10 Croatian guy from Indiana also for this years class. He will give us some much needed height.

I apologize for the length of this post. I typed it late last night/early am this morning as the original date and time states.

As a long time, “old school” Wolfpacker, I have been reading this site almost from its inception. I enjoy reading most of the opinions expressed whether I agree or disagree with them. We are all passionate Wolfpack fans.
I am old enough to have enjoyed the ‘73 and ‘74 teams of David Thompson, Tommy Burleson, Monte Towe, the epic struggle that was perhaps the greatest basketball game ever played between Maryland and NCSU for the ACC tournament title and the subsequent victories over UCLA and Marquette to win the national title under Norm Sloan. I enjoyed the ‘83 “Cardiac Pack’s run to the national title with coach Valvano. I survived the self imposed dark times after the Jim Valvano era.
However, the 10 year regime of HWSNBN pretty much drained the Wolfpack life from me. For anyone longing for the days of HWSNBN, this report came in earlier tonight. With a projected top 5 lottery pick guard and a projected 1st round pick post player, HWSNBN just squandered a 15 point half time lead and lost to the #6 seed Southern Cal in the Pac 10 tournament. He never had an inside scorer like Jeff Pendergraph or a lottery pick like James Harden while in Raleigh or if he did, he stubbornly refused to use them as such weapons on the court. HWSNBN’s ceiling was high mediocrity. With the exception of one season, we were usually NCAA bubble material at best. He did not care whether we were reasonably competitive with Duke or the Tarholes or Wake, Clemson, Miami, BC or anyone else for that matter. He scheduled enough cupcakes to have an NCAA bubble record on most occasions and we usually suffered through late season swoons against better competition. We plodded along at a game pace that produced ugly wins and even uglier losses. He did not care about the fan base and is at least partially to blame for the current apathy among us. His playing style did not lead to upper echelon talent signing on the dotted line to play for NCSU. I can not explain the James Harden to Arizona St. scenario that unfolded for all the money in the world. Instead, we had various collections of talented players with holes in their games or players that never deserved a scholarship from an ACC school. The group that he left behind were as emotionless as he was with the occasional exception of Ben McCauley. They either had minimal basketball IQ’s to begin with or he removed that from them with his coaching style and demeanor. He was so rigid, he could not change strategies in a game even when they were failing miserably.
Alas, he has, perhaps learned a few lessons from his days in Raleigh, based on Pendergraph not shooting 3’s and wandering the perimeter as a power player. However, his teams still display an incredible knack for playing some of the ugliest games in the NCAA. My son and I regularly use the term “Sendekian” to refer to long scoring droughts, ill advised 3 point attempts, inept inbounds plays or late game folds not matter who is playing.
I do not know for sure about, nor do I feel qualified to judge Sidney Lowe’s coaching ability. I do, however, know that he has a passion for NC State. I refuse to pass judgement on our coach based on the last 3 years (especially in regard to the overall mediocre results of his predecessor). He was thrust into a no-win situation due to the inept coaching search diplayed by “Coach Fowler”. Two complete recruiting years were lost with the exception of Dennis Horner. He had to gamble on players due to this situation that have not worked out for one reason or another. I feel that he has made significant strides in recruiting. Javi, Tracy, Julius, C.J. all seem to play with passion (maybe that is because they are naturally compared to the players from the previous coach). They do make mistakes. All freshmen and sophomores do. They are inconsistent. Most young players are. However, they do seem to have pride in the uniform they wear. These young players and the incoming class of Lorenzo Brown, Scott Wood and Richard Howell appear to provide a nucleus to move forward. Hopefully the following class of Ryan Harrow and C.J. Leslie (if they follow through with their commitments in spite of the on-line ridicule of the program and coach they have selected) and perhaps others that have not committed will continue to lift up the program. I realize that since I originally posted this last night that C.J. has re-opened his recruitment. I too feel that the kids are affected by what is written in open forums. If nothing else, other coaches can use written words to persuade teens to rethink situations.
If, however, we flat line as a mediocre program, then so be it. I believe that as a “Wolfpacker” with a love for the institution, Sidney will fall on the sword himself, so to speak, and move on or accept another position as Les Robinson did.
If I am wrong, I still do not want the current athletic director employed by NCSU to ever complete another coaching search for a football or men’s basketball coach. Sadly, he will eventually hire a replacement for the late Kay Yow. We can not be lucky enough for another coach to fall in his lap at his lake front home as Tom O’Brien did. Perhaps, he still has the slick haired ESPN analyst, whose name escapes me, on speed dial. Wouldn’t he look great on the sidelines as coach of the lady Wolfpack?
As I stated earlier, the 10 year reign of HWSNBN has really taken its toll on this old Wolfpacker. However, I also want to applaud BSIE80 and com state 10 for their optimism. I hope that they are rewarded for their loyalty to Sidney and the future Wolfpack teams. I hope that they get to celebrate as we did in ‘74 and ‘83.
If Sydney is not the answer, my hope is that “Coach Jed Clampett Folwer” is not in charge of finding the replacement.
My son came back to our seats in between the NCSU-Maryland and the Thursday nightcap game in Atlanta saying that “Jed” was talking with Tommy Burleson, David Thompson and another gentleman within the athletic dept. in the concourse of the Georgia Dome. I had the opportunity to talk for a few moments with Tommy at last year’s tournament in Charlotte and I would have loved to share my displeasure with the current manager of NCSU’s athletics department but they had departed before I got to the the area where they were previously talking.
I am all for any well organized effort to oust this leech of an AD that is draining the very life out of the NCSU athletic programs.
I apologize for the length of my first post to the forum. It (the forum) is well run and I applaud the efforts of the moderators. If I am asked to leave and this happens to be my last post, GO PACK!
P.S. Preach on Redfred2. The last thing we need is incompetent Jed Foulup leading another disasterous search and bringing more shame on NC State University.

While I agee somewhat, I do understand a young guy wanting to look around. From where we sit, we can’t pass judgement. Ultimately, I do NOT think it’s a good idea to keep offers on the table. I think you offer. If they come fine, if not, keep looking. Most top schools don’t keep offers on the table for extended amounts of time, but you can’t just say take or leave it, either.

The Sidney Lowe era will be undone by these things if things don’t change quickly:

    (1) The biggie–he’s 15-33 in ACC games.
    (2) He is yet to demonstrate that he can ‘manage’ a team of college players–that is, get his teams to play with consistent motivation, effort, and belief for 40 minutes, night in and night out.
    (3) His teams have been absolutely terrible on the defensive end (this relates to number 2..).

Number 1 can be partially excused away, if one were disposed to do so, by a ‘lack of talent’ or not having ‘his guys’ in the program yet (I have never bought that lame-ass excuse). Numbers 2 & 3 reflect directly on the coaching staff’s core ability to teach fundamentals and get guys to play hard. If a coach can’t do either of those things, the rest really doesn’t matter.

State basketball is irrelevant now, not only on a national level, but within our own conference. It’s a harsh truth. The question is, is there anyone out there that cares enough about the university, the basketball program–and actually has the ‘power’ to do something about it–to help get the right leadership in place to fix this? If not, we are looking square in the face of a train wreck in our basketball program. That’s something that makes me very, very sad.

  11. Ed89 03/15/2009 at 9:53 PM #

I posted this on the other thread, but it seems more applicable here.

Can someone explain to me why the best PG (Wall) in America, who goes to a small private school, has one of the top PF in America (Leslie) on his team, and they went 15-12 this year? I’m serious. In the big scheme of things, losing Wall and Leslie will NOT be the demise of this program. Sid is working to build a program, not a quick fix. And, I’m serious, why was WOG so “average” if they have two players that good, as well as a few other good players. Maybe I just don’t know HS basketball, but the record isn’t impressive.

GUYS-It’s so bad that my Wolfpack buddys don’t want to talk or care about BB, they have give up on this program.I have never seen as much apathy about anything in my life.
Football is a different story all together. When’s spring practice?

  13. turnoffthetv 03/15/2009 at 10:15 PM #

ThomYorkepack said “(3) His teams have been absolutely terrible on the defensive end”.

Preach it brother. You just cant give up 75 or 76 points per game consistently over a 3 year period and expect to win a bunch of games unless you are averaging 80 plus points per game. The offense I think has averaged around 70 points per game during the same period. Florida State averaged I believe less points than us per game this year on offense (70) but was #1 in Scoring Defense with (68) points per game. THE Pack must magically become some offensive juggernaut like the HOLES or else tighten up significantly on THE Defensive end or the results will be the same henceforth and forever more under this current coaching regime regardless if CJ Leslie recommits or not.

Sad, but no so surprising. There’s a lot of negativity flowing around our program right now. I said in previous threads that I’d be very surprised if we ever saw Leslie or Harrow in a NC State uniform. Sadly, I still believe that.

This is another potential nail in SL’s coffin. It’s not all the way in, but the pressure just keeps getting higher. I have felt for some time (and still feel) that next year is make or break for SL. I’m pulling for him!

I’ve also said ad nauseum that Fowler needs to be canned. This is yet another data point that suggests that next year is mission critical. It’s important to let a new AD come in and get a year to assess the situation.

I do not think for one second that Fowler will be fired any time soon. The big money donors will have to rise up and I don’t think they’re so inclined to do so.

  15. bradleyb123 03/15/2009 at 11:47 PM #

We can’t fire Sidney unless we have a top-notch coach that has already verbally committed to signing on with us. Otherwise, we’ll end up with some bunghole (we already have that much with Sid!) and we’ll suffer a big setback with recruiting. Sid does have some good ones coming in. And we’re still in-the-running for CJ Leslie.

  16. BJD95 03/16/2009 at 6:06 AM #

Of course I don’t want Lowe to fail. Or, more accurately, didn’t want him to fail (as I think he already has).

Lee Fowler must be held accountable for the dreadful condition of Wolfpack basketball.

  17. Wulfpack 03/16/2009 at 6:10 AM #

And good morning to you Adventoo. You can count on one thing, I’ve been posting on this blog for the better part of 4 years, so I’m not going anywhere despite your displeasure with my views.

If you want to go ahead and throw your hard earned money at this trainwreck of a program, be my guest. Hope it makes you feel nice and warm and fuzzy inside.

Don’t question my allegiance to my school.

You should be happy to know your well earned dollars and supportive views make Jed awqfully happy right about now.
    Have a great day.

Sid is not going to fall on any swords. One thing they don’t do is graduate dummies at St.Pauls.

Where else would Sid go to coach? Who would hire him?

  19. Rick 03/16/2009 at 7:31 AM #

“There was a movement among some of the heavy hitters to oust Fowler, shortly after we gave Chuckles the old heave ho. Obviously, it did not succeed.”

How does this guy stick around?
The only explanation I can think of is that his bosses are happy with his performance.
Thus we can assume they do not care about actual success. Rather they care that NCSU athletics makes money. As long as the seat licenses keep bringing in money they will be happy.

I have accepted the fact that NCSU will never be great again. Outside of the fans, no one wants to.

  20. ryebread 03/16/2009 at 9:03 AM #

Rick: You’re right. Until the department threatens to be in the red, then the administration will not replace the AD unless there is an outright revolt. Something tells me the big money donors don’t have the spare $$$ right now (or interest) to lead that revolt. Therefore, the only way to get rid of Fowler is to stop buying tickets for the revenue sports.

I think that TOB was a good hire and deserves the support. I enjoy spending warm fall afternoons in Carter Finley and football is my favorite sport. Therefore, I’ll continue to buy football tickets.

    Basketball on the other hand………

I’m not surprised, and honestly I can’t blame him for wanting to explore other options. People that commit in football and continue to make visits are not scrutinized, so if Leslie decides to look around, go for it. Although I have a feeling that with Memphis loading up for a title run next year, it’s gonna be tough.

Next year is HUGE for Sid! I’m so frustrated with the basketball team that I expect to lose, and am surprised if we win. I told a friend yesterday that we are now (IMO) a football school.

The problem starts at the top. Fowler needs to go. He’s a great fund-raiser, horrible administrator. He does not hold his staff accountable. A coach’s job is to win, yet when we don’t win, he gets a pat on the back and an “atta-boy”. Next, Sid must be on the chopping block. I hate to say it, but he needs to know that if things don’t turn around, he’s gone. Then, even in a down economy, we MUST get a GOOD coach, and pay him!

But, hoops is over (thankfully) and spring practice starts Wednesday, so now I can focus on a program headed in the right direction – football!

Fowler Named Director of Athletics at NC State University
    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Raleigh, N.C. — Chancellor Marye Anne Fox has announced that Lee Fowler has been named Athletics Director at North Carolina State University. Fowler, who has served in the same capacity at Middle Tennessee State University since 1994, boasts 27 years of experience in collegiate athletics as a player, coach and administrator.

In making the announcement today, Chancellor Fox said, “With this appointment, NC State has reason to celebrate a new era for our athletics program — an era in which the Wolfpack will become a contender at the highest levels of intercollegiate competition. As a former player and coach and as a seasoned administrator, Lee Fowler brings NC State the range of skills we need in an athletics director. We’re excited about his future as the leader of the Wolfpack.”

At Middle Tennessee State, Fowler led the Blue Raiders’ move from the 1AA level to Division 1A. He negotiated MTSU’s acceptance and move from the Ohio Valley Conference to the Sunbelt Conference; his program has won that league’s All-Sports Trophy for the best all-around sports program each of the past five years after winning it only once in the previous 50 years.

In 1997, Fowler was appointed to the prestigious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee and serves as the chairman of the NCAA television sub-committee for basketball. He is also a member of the NCAA’s certification team and was appointed to the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Board of Directors by the lieutenant governor.

A 1974 graduate of Vanderbilt, Fowler has upgraded the MTSU football program through a capital campaign and increased football season-ticket sales by 600 percent during his tenure. Under his direction, the Blue Raiders’ marketing and sponsorship programs have been restructured and refocused, resulting in a 300 percent increase in sponsorships. Affirmative action numbers have also increased by 300 percent at Middle Tennessee State with the addition of personnel and three women’s sports programs.

Prior to his appointment at MTSU, the 48-year-old Fowler served as Associate Athletic Director and Director of the Tiger Clubs at the University of Memphis from 1986 to 1994. At Memphis, he increased fund-raising totals from $634,000 in 1985 to a record total of $3,059,000 in 1993, the highest level in school history before or since. The number of top-level donors to the Memphis program more than doubled during his stint.

Fowler served as an assistant coach for the Memphis men’s basketball team from 1979 to 1986. The Tiger squads posted an overall record of 154-45 and advanced to the Final Four in 1986. The squad was ranked in the Top 10 five of his seven years on the coaching staff. From 1975 to 1979, Fowler served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Vanderbilt University.

As a student-athlete, Fowler was a starter and top reserve on the Commodores’ 1974 Southeastern Conference Championship men’s basketball team, the second in Vanderbilt’s history. The squad posted an overall record of 59-21 during his playing career, the best three-year record in school history.

Fowler earned his bachelor of arts in history from Vanderbilt in 1974 and earned his master’s in athletic administration/fitness and wellness from the University of Memphis in 1986.

The Columbia, Tenn., native will begin work at NC State on Oct. 1. He will receive a five-year contract with an annual salary of $203,000.

Fowler is married to the former Carol Murray of St. Clair Shores, Mich., who works as a stockbroker for Paine-Webber Inc. The couple has three daughters, Ashley, 22, Kristin Leigh, 15, and Carlee, 11. Ashley is a recent graduate of the University of Oregon, where she competed on the cycling team. A triathlete, she is currently pursuing a graduate degree and teaching at MTSU. Kristin Leigh is a sophomore in high school and competes in volleyball and basketball, while Carlee is in sixth grade at a magnet school in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

To clarify, here’s what I think should/needs to happen:

    1) Fowler tossed immediately.
    2) Lowe is evaluated next year by a competent AD, no contract extension. Without vast improvement (NCAAT bid), Lowe gets tossed.

Fowler is unable and unwilling to judge Lowe objectively. It’s impossible to put Lowe on the clock with Fowler in place. Thus, without a move made re Fowler very, very soon – we will enter Les Robinson territory as a program.

That said, if the new AD came in and the right coach was available before next season, then I am completely OK with pulling the trigger right now. But that is extremely unlikely.

Just another in a long and continuing line of selling your sole and sacrificing well intentioned human beings, in order to excuse NC STATE UNIVERSITY’S ownership of a total lack in foresight.

What does selling fish have to do with anything?
