CJ Leslie Officially Re-Opens Recruitment

As most regular readers know, SFN has hinted at this development since January, but now that Dave Telep is bringing it into the public domain (note – this is a premium article, so we won’t post any content), we can be more explicit. CJ Leslie has re-opened his commitment, and is no longer an NC State verbal.

We have definitely heard that Memphis will be heavily involved. I have lamented that April 11, 2006 was the day that NC State’s basketball program died, after many years on life support. That was the day John Calipari, arguably the perfect coach for NC State, said no. Go ahead, re-read the Dan Wetzel article we linked and try not to slit your wrists.

And Calipari is the gift that keeps on giving for NC State. Despite self-serving and transparently jealous/defense mechanism comments from some calling Calipari a “thug” or a guy who could only get his players in at Memphis – please note we are fishing from the same waters. DeMarcus Cousins, probably John Wall, and now maybe CJ Leslie. The only difference is that Calipari actually wins these recruiting battles. Does anyone have any doubt who would have come out on top if Calipari was at NC State, and Lowe at Memphis? Didn’t think so.

Now, it’s important to note what this does not mean. We have not been told that Leslie has definitely decided to go elsewhere. He maystill end up at NC State. But publicly de-committing is a very, very bad omen for Sidney Lowe and the health of his program entering the crucial 2009-10 season.

As far as the timing is concerned, we were told that CJ would re-open his commitment at the end of the basketball season. This weekend, he made good on what we were told he would do.

REDFRED2-Somehow I think PREPERATION H is used by alot in the Administration and the Athletic Depart.
Don’t know about the itchy part but can vouch for the ass part.

Matt Doherty was a completely different situation OTHER than the fact that he played on a team for the school’s coaching legend who had a lot of success as a player. Doherty had prior college head coaching experience. I’m not really trying to support Sid or not support Sid, but let’s compare apples to apples. Also, that class won a national championship for a guy WHO NEVER WON ONE BEFORE. I think they probably could have done the same for Doherty had he stayed. The problem with Doherty (and who knows I guess the same could ultimately come out about Sid MAYBE) is that he alienated a lot of people in the program by being a complete psychotic (literally) asshole. His players ultimately revolted against him and the school had to make a move. Interestingly enough in that scenario their primary target rejected overtures from the program when Doherty was ultimately hired and Roy accepted the second time around. I guess if you REALLY want to play russian roulette with basketball program we could stage a coup by the players, force the school to take action, and pray to the big Man upstairs that Fowler does something other than whiff this go around. I’m guessing none of us here really want to see all that unfold… God help us if it does.

And I’ll say this… I’ve heard some stories about Wall that make me think that if Cousins and Leslie and Wall are all birds of a feather, we’ll be better off. I wouldn’t turn any of them down if they wanted to come here… obviously… but in my eyes it’s not the end of the world, either.

The infamous “progress” button. Pull it out when there is nothing really of substance left to say. “Progress” from 12th place to 10th. “Progress” from 4 ACC wins to 6. “Progress” from 15 wins to 16. “Progress” from having a few “bad losses” to no “bad losses”, though the losses to Florida, Davidson and Marquette no longer look so “hot”. “Progress” from having no point guard, to playing three and benching all at some point in the season.

My how our standards have fallen. We can’t go much lower. NIT bubble team. Hooray. Well, at least that’s “progress”.

He’s gotten a fair shake. If he were anywhere else of relevance, at a place like Kentucky, or UCLA, or Michigan State, or Syracuse…any place with any kind of “tradition” and “expectations”, his ass would have already been sent out the door.

By defending this mess of a program, you’re doing nothing more than condoning the “we don’t give a damn” attitudes of the people actually in control. They love you guys right about now. “He is on of our own.” Sadly, that’s about the extent of what he really is.

Coach K struggled when he started at Duke (though one could argue that Duke had not history compared to our great history – at the relevant times) AFTER he had been an assistant at Indiana for 1 year and then a head coach for 5 years at Army.

Sid has exactly zero years college coaching experience… correct? We gave Herb a decade and he had a 3 year head start as a college head coach with his short stint at Miami, Ohio. I’m not saying we should give Sid 13 years (though I could see how one could argue that) but I do think we can give the guy a chance to play some ball with a group of guys who give a shit about NC State… something I’m not convinced he’s ever had the luxury of.

  6. GAWolf 03/15/2009 at 5:00 PM #

I don’t think the progress we’ve seen is worth mentioning. But of course I wasn’t the one on these boards talking about our chances to make the NCAA tournament after beating Wake Forest and Georgia Tech, either….

I’m about as emotional a guy as you’ll find, and I’ve got some sense of level-headed objectivity about this whole situation.

  7. Afterglow 03/15/2009 at 5:04 PM #

bathomas-I think the Coach K comparison is a poor one. He came from a much richer background and actually had experience in coaching college basketball before landing at Duke. Before rooting himself in Durham he coached at West Point for five years and that was after working under the tutelage of some guy named Bobby Knight.

If Lee Fowler was let go could he be replaced with the North Carolina’s hiring freeze? I understand that they can replace essential employees but clearly the AD position at State isn’t an essential employee.

Congrats to Arizona State University for making it to the PAC Ten final. So close to a great season and a tournament championship but fell just a little short, maybe next year. I’m sure you guys will finish strong and make a nice run in the tournament.

  9. redfred2 03/15/2009 at 5:07 PM #

Uh Wulf, I honestly don’t think you want get to into any discussions about “falling standards” with me.

Your upper scale is not even visiable on the lowest end of my acceptable range. That’s why this current situation, to you, seems SO DIRE and such a huge drop off.

To me, it’s just a little drop off in the same ol, same ol, range.

  10. GAWolf 03/15/2009 at 5:12 PM #

^^^ Ding. Ding. Ding. We have a winner.

  11. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 03/15/2009 at 5:33 PM #

After losses to Davidson, Marquette and Florida, State really only had a shot at the NIT save an amazing ACC season. State is where we knew they would be. Unless State knows that they can get a top coach I don’t see a reason to make a change this year. I think all coaches should be given four years and I think after three years Lowe’s program is a promising as Sendek and Robinson.

  12. Afterglow 03/15/2009 at 5:35 PM #

Sorry for the redundant redundancy GAWolf. I think I posted a few minutes after you.

  13. Afterglow 03/15/2009 at 5:40 PM #

Hey, maybe if we can’t get Calipari to come here we can just trade spots in conferences. Surely we would win some then. I still wanna play Lipscomb though. And also East Carolina… er wait sec-they would be in our conference-Yippy… a new rival!!!

  14. turnoffthetv 03/15/2009 at 5:51 PM #

Ultimately it is SID or Someone higher up the food chain that is responsible for this sucktitude. But when you hear SID talking in POST GAME or the Lowe Show.”We didnt run our stuff” “A couple of our guys had Mental lapses”. I have not yet heard SID BLAME himself. The Same with Fowler. He Skips over SID and blames the Players or worse yet the FANS. WE the FANS or the players have become the scapegoats of this Athletics Department. The responsibilty no longer lies on UPPER Management much less Middle Management.

  15. GAWolf 03/15/2009 at 5:53 PM #

Afterglow: my ^^^ is probably actually a ^. I’ve never caught on to the fact that each ^ means a move upward. I was referring to Redfred’s assessment of why this really isn’t the end of the world… we should have expectations much larger than ONE good recruit who committed when he was very, very young and now wants to go on some free trips to wherever. Were I in his shoes, I’d let people fly me to cool college campuses and treat me like a king. Also, if he is wavering and it IS because of some shady AAU coach or other scandalous activity, we’re better off without him. AnywGy, I wasn’t mocking your repeat post if that’s what you thought. Sorry for the confusion.

  16. bathomas 03/15/2009 at 6:04 PM #

Afterglow- My point is that even if he isn’t beating the world right now. Writing the program off and demanding we start over isn’t going to help, let him get a class of his Seniors in and we’ll see what him and his players and his system have got.

  17. Afterglow 03/15/2009 at 6:23 PM #

bathomas-that’s basing a lot on the “his players” scenario. In reality I don’t think it matters what any of us think and (unfortunately) I do believe we’ll see how he does with HIS seniors running HIS stuff whether we want to or not. That at least seems to be the state of State now anyway.

It’s more a function of no one having the balls to pull the trigger and do the right thing. And yet as mentioned before, no other big time school would put up with this.

  18. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 03/15/2009 at 6:27 PM #

I’ve been as negative as anyone but at least at this point can we wait until the end of the season? State has a shot at an NIT bid, State has played well enough to do have a shot to make it to the Garden.

If State misses out on the NIT or makes it and doesn’t advance I think it will be fair to go after Lowe. Four teams lost on Thursday and eight were gone by Friday night. We have to admit State’s program isn’t what fans want it to be but after 20 years of this are we ready to start over again or give Lowe and Towe one more year?

State has played well, the team has potential and all isn’t lost.

  19. Afterglow 03/15/2009 at 6:31 PM #

If State makes the NIT I’ll be amazed and maybe somewhat more optimistic. I’m basing my personal feelings off of<<<I pretty much think we’re done for the season.

This place is depressing….have you guys had too many beers?

I think that all posters need to take a breathalyzer before being allowed to post.

    HWSNBSOH…he is a number 6 Seed….his record is 24/9…

I am a LTR holder in BOTH football (2) and Basketball..4…in the Champions Club….My credit card takes a MAJOR hit from the WPC.

I would rather WATCH a losing season with SID than a winning, blah season with HWSNBSOH…

Sid, I think, is doing the absolute BEST he can with the hand he was dealt. My wife and I have been to every ACC Tourney, except this one because we did NOT want to suffer Oxygen depravation, since the mid 90’s.

I remember the 2002 Tourney when WE beat MD…their last loss before becoming the NCAA champs that year. We SUCKED when we played DOOK…Reddick took us apart. When HWSNBSOH was asked about changing defenses…such as a Box & 1, Triangle & 2…his response was…WE DID NOT PRACTICE THOSE…so WHY try them in a game…WHAT THE HECK was Plan B when we were getting KILLED.

I remember the 2007 Tourney in Tampa…had great seats and free food and beer…we went there with a predominately UNX crowd…and THEY were REALLY worried in the championship game…

OK…enter Sid’s spaced out kid….what was Sid to do?….Disown him…The 2007 team would have walked on hot coals BAREFOOTED if he had told them it would NOT hurt. I think that Sid, JR. actually resented his relationship with the team and actually went on a self destruction path…BUT IT HAPPENED…and it is ALMOST OVER…

    Last year…Who knows…JJ was a Prima Donna…Costner was the P’bury Dough boy…it was SAD.

This year’s team was picked DEAD LAST by EVERY writer. A number 10 was better and we LOST by some close margins.

USE ALL YOUR PENT UP ENERGY ON THE ADMIN and the WPC…

I have been told by SEVERAL reliable sources that NCSU will NEVER be the athletic power that it once was…the Faculty will NOT permit it.

I have campaigned for the V man’s name to be on the court…many of the insiders tell me that the Faculty and Oblinger would NEVER vote for any V Award…from Dogcatcher of the Year to GREAT NCSU Coach…Jealousy run rampart.

    QUIT BASHING SID….

As one poster stated, this is an OPEN Blog…what do you think the parents and advisors would tell potential HIGH LEVEL recruits about Sid…

He KNOWS the GAME….He will Develop you and teach you the SKILLS for the NBA…but READ about the fans…they have already run off a coach that got them consistently 20 game seasons…

Sid, if he is fired, will make just as much or MORE as an TOP TIER NBA Coach…and he will probably get the HC job again…

He came here to HELP US…what kind of treatment are we giving him in return…

OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH….This blog makes me SICK….YES….I do NOT LIKE LOSING….but I hate Sid Bashing MORE!

Point 1-K worked for Bobby Knight who is a proven developer of college talent

Point 2-Roy worked for Dean who was a proven developer of college talent

Point 3-Les had no proven mentor that I am aware of or at least not for any period of time

Point 4-Can’t address HWSNBN cause I haven’t done the research

Point 5-Lowe worked for no one in the college ranks who is a proven developer of college talent…Sorry, playing for Jimmy isn’t the same, but you’d think he’d learn something by osmosis

Point 6-Monte did work for Norm. But, to this day, I know and most of us around at the time, know that the 74 team won it all in spite of Norm. Cowdog, feel free to chime in!

I still think if we’d taken a look at Greg Marshall….sure he’s not knocked it dead now, but what could he have done with an NCSU logo? Would have been interesting and certainly no worse than where we’ve been for 3 years.

It’s time, way freaking past time for everyone, fans, Wolfpack Club, alumni, faculty, BOT, BOG to understand that NC State has become “worse than a laughing stock”, PATHETIC may be a better word! It’s going to start showing up in applications or worse yet, MORE APATHY, cause the students forced to go there by their parents will not want to be there which will feed MORE APATHY!

Has anyone ever heard this term applied to NC State? I have! Used to be a common term in the 60’s and 70’s on campus and it doesn’t seem to have changed!

Yea, we bitch on here, but NOTHING ever happens!

I’m starting to rant like Noah and Fred so forgive me! Fred, you need a fishing trip and I need another green beer to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day in advance!

I fully expect Wall to sign with Memphis as well as Leslie.

Leslie decommitting is a bad omen and it shows the future for Sid IMO.

I can’t imagine Sid surviving after year 5 if all he does is bring us to the NCAAT that year. But then again, our leaders would call a NCAAT berth progress and probably sign Sid to a 5 year extension.

Regardless I cannot fell bad for Sid. It’s been 3 years and as others have posted he has shown no ability to right the ship. Sid has only landed one 5 star recruit in Hickson and that ended up bad.

Sid is making $1 million a year a WE HAVE regressed since Herb was here. Sid can go back to the NBA where he only needs 2 more years of service there to qualify for a PENSION. Think about it. Sid will land fine on his feet if he ends up leaving.

As far as the next coach I say we start running the groundwork for Sean Miller at Xavier. Sean left while Herb was here but from what I have heard and read he enjoyed his time in Raleigh. Miller is doing a good job at Xavier and he would probably relish a chance to coach again at State in the ACC.

Now the biggest problem for me is waiting for the “Sidney Lowe experiment” to run its course. Hopefully he will be gone after year 5. To those who say “look to the future” I say “look at the past.” We are going nowhere fast with Sid and only regressing.

Get rid of Sid and cut our losses and bring in a new AD and basketball coach. Hell why not make TOB the AD. He could do a better job.

I had hope when Sendek left but now after 3 years of Sid I am depressed again.

    When will the pain stop?

  24. Rufftown Wolf 03/15/2009 at 6:55 PM #

You know who cares, has anyone seen Word of Gods record?? They weren’t that good. They play other small private schools and still get beat. Their 16 and 17 old kids that change their minds every hour of the day.

You know why Calipari didn’t want to come NCSU because he didn’t want to get his ass beat for three or four years straight, why would he want to leave the cupcakeville conference.

Sid has beat UNC, Duke, and Wake (how long did it take Herb). They were in every game this year. The kids are starting to buy in to his system. We’ve got better talent coming in. So what if a kid changes his mind, I would rather have kids that want to play for NCSU. I also have a feeling Costner is going to stay. We’ll be good next and make tourney.
You know why because everybody else is leaving.

    ^^^Advent…

Great post. If people can’t see the improvement in players like, Javi and Smith. The growth of Costner and Big Ben. Development of Mays and Horner and the potential of future then I guess how I can see how you think the season was a loss. I saw guys that wanted to win as the season progressed and I’m not nearly as down as I was at this time last year.

Don’t forget football season is less than six months away.
