No, I haven’t forgotten about baseball. Hopefully those readers who were interested haven’t as well! Since I have a break, let’s look at where things stand now: the Wolfpack sit 12-10 overall, 3-6 in the ACC following a 2-1 weekend series win over Wake Forest. I said earlier in the season, don’t be dismayed at a slow start. The offense is very young, as it takes a while to adjust to college pitching. Many big bats were lost from last years team, and no doubt the veteran leadership is missed.
The good news: the pitching is stellar, as has been the case in years past. Buchanan was pretty dang good in the Saturday game game against Wake, tossing a complete game and at one point sending 21 straight Demon Deacons to the bench.
The encouraging news: the offense is showing signs of coming to life, after posting a couple of double digit outputs in the final two games of the Wake Series. How young is the hitting? Andrew Ciencin, Pratt Maynard, John Gianis, and Harold Riggins all see significant time as true Freshmen. Cameron Conner has seen some time as well. Drew Poulk and Kyle Wilson are newcomers as well, albeit with experience. Drew Poulk showed some signs of life against Wake, which is encouraging.
Up this week: today against UNCG and tomorrow against Liberty, both at home. Note, for those who attend games, GoPack.com annoucned the Liberty game will be moved up to 3:00 to beat some expected rain. I have no clue who is pitching these, but since I like to randomly guess these sorts of things, expect to see some of Russo and Sinclair. Over the weekend, the Wolfpack will host Virginia Tech.
Note added: It appears Russell Wilson is back in action, as gamecast has him starting at second base. He scored a run in the second inning. Not that I don’t trust GoPack’s cutting edge technology, but I’ll look for confirmation of this.
