ACC Play Opens In Baseball: Pack Set to Battle Miami

The Wolfpack Nine travel to Coral Gables to take on the Hurricanes in the conference opening series for each team. Miami has climbed to #15 in Baseball America’s (BA) latest rankings after destroying Florida in Gainesville. BA also highlights this series in Aaron Fitt’s Weekend Preview. Both teams sit at 7-2, and a series win would be a nice start to the conference season for both squads, while at the same time losing wouldn’t be a complete disaster. There are 10 conference series, and once again State avoids Georgia Tech. Miami is also the lone “top” team that State goes on the road to play; UNC, Clemson and Florida State all come to Raleigh. Of course, some of the other conference teams could improve, but at first glance the conference schedule appears to be very favorable.

The pitching rotation for the weekend has a veteran flavor, with Gilheeney, Buchanan and Sogard slated to take the hill. As BA notes in their preview–and I have mentioned in previous posts–, the contributions of the freshmen for the Wolfpack have been pretty nice so far. Pratt Maynard, John Gianis, Cameron Conner, Andrew Ciencin and Harold Riggins have all cracked the starting lineup at various times in the young season. As the freshmen gain some experience, expect the offense to become more consistent; this has been a problem (offensive consistency, that is) that has plagued the Pack in past seasons.

Friday and Saturday game times are 7pm, with Sunday’s action set for 1pm. Feel free to use this thread to discuss the series.

DBP Note: I’ve given up on the notion of a full blown preview as time is becoming more and more scant and quite frankly, the basketball team deserves some focus this year. I am working various components of it into this and other posts; for example, the conference schedule analysis appears here. The non-conference schedule will be analyzed later, as some decent RPI data becomes available.

Thanks for your efforts on baseball, Dr.BP

    Yep,

The baseball posts are appreciated here, too.

With warmer weather comes hotter bats.

Someday, I might explain my utter distaste for Miami baseball.

I don’t have a biggoted bone in my body, but if I penned what I really think of the baseball Hurricanes, I’d have the PC police all over my ass.

We caught ’em a couple of times back in the 70’s at the NCAA regionals. We were good. They were better, and knew it, and showed it.

Same here DBP, I don’t get into collegiate baseball like I should, so your posts last season really shined a light and helped me appreciate it much more than I normally would. Don’t lose sleep over it, but please keep it up!

I’ll echo the thoughts of those above. Any baseball posts you make are greatly appreciated, so definitely don’t feel bad about not getting around to posting a full preview. Thanks for the preview of the weekend. Does anyone know how the first game came out?

Disheartening loss tonight for the Pack on a walkoff 2-run home run in the bottom of the 12th with two outs to lose 7-6. Bullpen and infield (errors) blow 5-2 and 6-5 leads. Poor fielding and poor relief > fantastic starting pitching tonight.

COWDOG, I’d say the PC police have knowledge and circumstantial evidence according to your own eyewitness account of the proceedings, but nothing concrete, with which to convict. 🙂

Today when we walked what should have been the final out, I just knew the next guy up would win it for the Canes.

There should be a word for that peculiar feeling — with its particular resonance for State fans — knowing with absolute certainty that collapse is imminent, yet being powerless to do anything but watch the disaster unfold.

The best I can come up with, though, is “Packstration anxiety.” Anyone else?

It certainly would have been nice to win… but I’m not going to blame the bullpen all that much. Brown was hurt by some errors, and Rutter actually did well for 4 innings before surrendering the big fly. It’s a shame the bullpen wasn’t fully available due to wednesday’s marathon. But… no use whining about it, since this is baseball and we can get them in 11.5 hours.

Tulsa, It actually reminds me of an old word with both French and Spanish influences. I think it’s origins have something vaguely to do with a succession of ancient leaders who were famous for looking like a deer in the torchlight when choking in pressure situations, though I can’t really remember it’s true definition.

The term is “Les herbina”, or something like that anyway. Don’t quote me on it though.
