ACC Implosion Now Almost Complete

Only Ty Lawson’s toe (why won’t the announcers ever mention it?) and Tyler Hansbrough’s will stand in the way of complete conference humilation, after Villanova’s 77-54 curb stomping of Duke tonight. This game was not as close as the final score indicated. It was like the Magic Johnson-era Lakers against a 12-and-under team from the local YMCA.

Nice punk move by Elliott Williams to steal the ball with 2 seconds left, and Nova showing mercy. I’m sure Greivous Vasquez would be proud. Shithead. Uh, yeah.

I think the Big East might have been a hair better than the ACC this year after all. My apologies for my assertions otherwise earlier in the season.

I was thinking about all of the ACC losses, and it’s really even worse than it first seems. Please note the following: – Clemson loses to Michigan. Wolverines bow out the next round. – USC annihilates Boston College. Trojans lose 2 days later. – Wake Forest completely shits the bed against Cleveland State. Arizona dispatches the Vikings with ease in Round 2. – Wisconsin edges an unprepared, energy-free Florida State squad. Yep, the Badgers are quickly sent home by Xavier. – After notching the ACC’s only win as a lower-seeded team, Maryland gets killed by Memphis. The Tigers get run out of the gym by Mizzou in Round 3.

That’s right, not only is the ACC 5-6 in the big dance, but teams knocking ACC squads out of the NCAA tourney have also yet to win a single game afterwards. 0-5, pending Villanova’s date with Pittsburgh on Saturday. That’s some kind of suckage.

Yes folks, believe it or not, some programs actually show improvement in 3 years. As a matter of fact, some don’t waste any time and get down to business in year 1.

Well that’s just crazy talk. Everyone knows that it takes longer than that to finish, “Everything You Wanted To Know About Coaching College Basketball (But Were Afraid To Ask).”

Next thing you know, you’ll be telling me that Mizzou’s coach has already figured out that if you call TO in the backcourt, you don’t get to inbound the ball at midcourt.

Ha. Or maybe you’ll be telling me that Mizzou’s coach managed to figure out that spending all of your scholarships on scrub reserves from mid-level teams wasn’t a good idea.

    Like I said…crazy talk.

“Even in today’s world of college basketball, team still means something.”

Exactly, Alpha. I equate the latter rounds of the NCAAT to the NFL playoffs, where intangibles generally come into the equation.

“BTW the coach of that Missouri team that beat Cal is in his THIRD year at Mizzu!”

Even Mike Anderson was starting to feel some heat at Mizzou prior to this season … his third.

    Damn lunatics.

I absolutely hate to be positive here…because it is incredibly disappointing that the ACC has sucked this bad in the tourney, and I’m sure Coach K regrets making his “The ACC is the better conference, I don’t think there’s any doubt about that” comment.

However, I think it’s become extremely clear our way back to the top 2 or 3 in the ACC: toughness. Most of you have commented on Sid’s inability to coach, to win on the X’s and O’s. I have been one of his strongest supporters, but I can admit that he learns slowly, and often has curious at best substitution patterns.

This tourney has taught me that if Sid can become the toughest coach in the ACC, in the season, and in the offseason, we can return to the NCAA tourney maybe even next year.

He may lose on the more finite details of coaching (albeit very important details), but I think he can make up for his rather slow learning curve by teaching war on the court, or as Mizzou says it, “fastest 40 minutes in college basketball” or “40 minutes of hell” as I believe other teams have stated.

I hope our team can come out next year and almost gain a reputation for being too rough, too tough for the court. If we do, we will roll over most of these teams.

I know its probably a sin on here, and I may be a Wolfpacker In Name Only, but I hope Carolina wins this thing, I love the ACC too much, and I am tired of being walked on this tourney.

Big East has been a lot better than the ACC for years. The officals let them play, so when the tourney starts they are trying to score while the acc is waiting for the whistle. Defense in the Big East is a lot stronger and they can shut down good shooting teams with ease.

I agree. I turn a blind eye to a program being able to turn it around in 3 years. It’s just not possible. Lee told me so! 😉

One thing you had to notice in the last 2 Duke games was that the opposition kept pace on the foul line.

I really thought last night was a simple case of Villanova being the aggressor. I did think that Nova got some of the calls last night – it actually looked like what one of Duke’s opponets have to deal with.

As far as the rest of the teams – Wake Forest and FSU are very talented – but inexperienced in the big dance. Neither of those teams had been on that stage before, and well, I don’t think either one of those teams has a great coach (right now.)

Clemson kind of remains a bit of an enigma. After watching them (and FSU and Wake) – I’ve come to the conclusion that our team’s basketball IQ wasn’t any lower than theirs.

Where the ACC has really fallen off is that UMd now is mediocre. Gary Williams has had some significant holes that he has been unable to fill since his last Sweet 16 appearance. Part of me suspects that when he won that national championship, he decided that he wasn’t going to kill himself recruiting AND going after head cases anymore (this might have come after John “The One That Got Away, But Are We Kind of Glad” Glichrist.) UMd went from a team that was never on the bubble to a national championship contender, to a national champion, to a Sweet 16 team…to a perpertual bubble team.

What I think that this shows us is that it is hard damn work and it takes excellent coaching in the ACC to field a team that is full of “qualifiers”, stays out of jail, and is still athletic enough to excel in the league.

  8. wolfmans brother. 03/27/2009 at 8:58 AM #

I wouldn’t say that the big east has been better than the ACC for years, but I would say that this year’s big east is — to my surprise — one of the best conferences i’ve seen in a while. I think the national championship will have to go through it.

  9. Wulfpack 03/27/2009 at 9:05 AM #

Well if Sid could suit up and play we might have a chance with the “toughness” factor. Problem is, we are puny on the inside and have what I call soccer guards. Kind of hard to be “tough” when you are smaller at every position and have no backups. But again, that’s not on the coach. Couldn’t be.

  10. Greywolf 03/27/2009 at 9:11 AM #

    BJD,
We have some disagreements but I have to say, you and AW are my kind of people. Chop, SG, Prime, and others, as well.

I couldn’t have said it better my damn-self.

  11. choppack1 03/27/2009 at 9:12 AM #

Wulfpack – Villanova’s guards weren’t very tall. They didnt’ have much size either. What they do have is quickness and toughness.

  12. Alpha Wolf 03/27/2009 at 9:15 AM #

I was very surprised that Rick Barnes did not come back to try to kick Roy and K around.

    $Texas.

    End of story.

  13. Noah 03/27/2009 at 9:20 AM #

Rick Barnes is in a good situation at Texas. I don’t blame him for staying. He’s got all the money he could want, he’s raising his family in a pretty cool city, he can recruit the whole country, and you can win a national championship there.

I think that the right coach at UGa could do very similar things in Athens.

  14. Sweet jumper 03/27/2009 at 9:23 AM #

I loved the way Villanova did not try to kill the clock in the last 10 minutes. They kept attacking and scoring rather than forcing up a prayer at the end of the shot clock on multiple possessions.

Alpha-I know that Barnes not coming was all about the money, but some things–like kicking UNX and Dook ass– are priceless!

  15. Astral Rain 03/27/2009 at 9:32 AM #

On the toughness thing, isn’t that what Barnes tried to do at Clemson?

It kinda worked, but with ACC refs being about as crooked as Hijo del Tirantes, we’d be down to 3-4 players at the end of the game. We’d be reffed out of the game.

  16. wufpup76 03/27/2009 at 9:36 AM #

“Since expanding to 12 schools before the 2005-06 season, the ACC has won 53.3 percent of its NCAA Tournament games, a 24-21 record. Before expansion, the ACC was 313-153 in its history for a 66.9 percent clip that led all Division I conferences.”

    http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/acc-flops-as-big-east-soars

^Blaming Swofford may or may not be prudent, but there is no debate in how the ACC has taken a gigantic step backwards in basketball since expansion.

I think it’s lovely that we sold our “heart and soul” – to steal from Coach K – to become a well below average football conference with an absolute joke of a football “title” game. The league was built on the backs of it’s basketball teams, and now that sport is a distant second. Wonderful.

At the time, I didn’t think there was any avoiding expansion and thought it was natural and inevitable. You have to keep up with the other conferences or you lose your money and endorsements.

But, man … this has been a pretty huge slap in the face so far. At least the conference people have their pockets lined … they better pick it up though. People in true ACC country won’t take this but for so long.

I think the Holes get by Gonzaga before shitting themselves against Oklahoma…

Off topic, but what in the world is UK waiting on? I’m wondering if Calipari pulled a Calipari and backed out last minute. It’s hilarious up here, the Lexington Herald-Leader has a running one-stop spot for the firing-to-be news.

Good point. The refs would not allow us to be tough at least not against the blue wall.

  20. RickJ 03/27/2009 at 9:44 AM #

In 11 years at Texas, Rick Barnes has won over 73% of his games in the Big 12. During the same period, he has faced Duke five times and lost all five, some by incredibly large margins.

The last two coaching hires in the ACC are Sidney Lowe by Lee Fowler and Dino Gaudio by Ron Wellman. Craig Littlepage at UVA is up next. Let’s see who they hire. I’m betting it will not be Tubby Smith, Jeff Capel or Sean Miller. If it is, congratulations to Mr. Littlepage.

Today, there are two great jobs in the ACC and ten good ones. NC State should be at the top of the other ten. As has been mentioned, great coaches are not afraid of competing – but they have a real aversion to being put in a situation where they are at a distinct disadvantage.

  21. Noah 03/27/2009 at 9:48 AM #

Off topic, but what in the world is UK waiting on?

You have to untangle that Gillespie contract first.

  22. Alpha Wolf 03/27/2009 at 9:49 AM #

What is Kentucky waiting on? I would guess buyout considerations and maybe ensuring that they have someone to step in immediately. Schools like UK don’t tend towards coaching searches conducted in secret bunkers on Kerr Lake in a bass boat where there is cell phone coverage.

    http://www.whas11.com/justposted/stories/WHAS11_090326_Top_gillispie.74c3bf6f.html

ources are telling WHAS11’s Kyle Draper and Danielle Santoro that Billy Gillispie will not be returning as the head coach of Kentucky next year.

After WHAS11 broke the story around 9:30 P.M., UK’s Sports Information Department issued a statement saying:

“UK men’s basketball coach Billy Gillispie has not been fired. There have been no meetings between Gillispie and UK officials today and there is no scheduled press conference for tomorrow.”

Again, WHAS11’s sources are saying Billy Gillispie will not be the head coach of the Kentucky men’s basketball team next year.

  23. Gene 03/27/2009 at 9:50 AM #

The really sad thing is the selection committee will remember this next year. ACC gets no more than 4 teams in for the 2010 tournament.

  24. LRM 03/27/2009 at 9:52 AM #

Does anyone really think another upper-tier program will hire Gillespie, with his well-documented character and personality issues?

  25. wufpup76 03/27/2009 at 9:54 AM #

From the link wolfmans brother provided:

“University of Kentucky assistant coach Tracy Webster was seen packing up his office in the Craft Center on Thursday”

That’s going the extra mile … I can only imagine being in Lexington right now around a bunch of crazed/rabid UK fans.

    “There he IS!!! Lynch him!!!”
