ACC Coaches on the Hotseat? Debated (Updated 2:10pm)

One has to wonder what the brain trust at the News and Observer knows that we don’t:

“With at least four ACC basketball coaches in some degree of trouble — Florida State’s Leonard Hamilton, Maryland’s Gary Williams, N.C. State’s Sidney Lowe and Virginia’s Dave Leaito” — Caulton Tudor, in “Finding The Next Coach”

This list is is a case of extreme subjectivity that Tudor typically does a better job of qualifying. To use Tudor’s words, I don’t argue that Coach Lowe is close to experiencing ‘some degree of trouble’…but what the hell does that mean? ‘Some degree’ of trouble is a long way from being a large enough degree to be publicly addressed in an article.

I think that Hamilton, Williams and Leaito are all clearly a step closer to the fire than Sidney Lowe – who is in the middle of just his third year and has been responsible for only a single recruiting class while at NC State. Additionally, Paul Hewitt – regardless of Derrick Favors – also must be included in any list of ‘Coaches on the Hotseat’ that would go as far down the list as Coach Lowe.

Tudor should have either (1) included Hewitt on his list or (2) excluded Coach Lowe to comprise a list whose members were held to consistent standards. All else being equal, Coach Lowe is probably 5th on a list of “Coaches in Trouble” in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

It would be major news if Sidney Lowe were in any real trouble at the moment. Sure, there’s grousing about the play of the team on the Internet; but the reality of the situation is that no real sign of Lowe being in any trouble has leaked out of the NC State camp.

Fans can yack all the like on message boards, in comment sections of blogs and at the water-cooler, but that doesn’t make much of a difference where the rubber meets the road: in the ‘minds’ of the folks that run NC State’s ‘esteemed’ Athletics Department.

Tudor, it seems, forgets that Wolfpack Athletic Director Lee Fowler doesn’t ever seem to think a coach has done a poor enough job to warrant dismissal — with the most recent debacle evidenced by Fowler’s preference to give Chuck Amato another year just two weeks before the Board of Trustees told Fowler to make a choice between his job or Amato’s.

In exactly twelve months from now, if the Wolfpack Basketball Program is in the exact same position as today then the time will have arrived for a different kind of conversation. But, Coach Lowe has not had a enough time to complete even half of a friggin recruiting cycle. Barring any misconduct, its likely he won’t – nor should he – be replaced until ample opportunity has flushed through the program in which he is in charge.

^No one, I think, feels 100% confident he’s going to get things done…

I’m certain that he is going to suceed at a high level. He has had to make adjustments and learn in an environment which is extremely stressfull but it’s what he loves to do-it’s his passion and he will do this program it’s just deserves.

Part of the certainty comes from a perspective that this is just a case of a normal bell curve. Once he gets thru the traction part he will expenentially produce positve results on and off the court. Lets hope that the back end of the bell curve is either at the end of a long tenure or is interrupted by wanting to leave on top/NBA position offer.

The other strong reason is that I have faith in what he and his assistants are doing now will all show there excellence in due time.

Alpha, as sad as it is to say, what isn’t accurate about what the N&O published?

We can’t beat them (BB). We let Hansborough punk us all day. UNC did own in-state FB recruiting this year. Tudor’s article was right.

I wish I could disagree, but I can’t. At least when they chirp about FB, we have 41-10.

I’ve defended him on this blog, but Sid must show major progress next year, even with a younger team.

(you know Lowe, without whom we would have much less basketball ‘tradition, one of our own, partly responsible for one of the two banners that mean the most)

Which is why we should hire Dinky Proctor as our next head basketball coach. Hey, he can tell that really cool story about how he and Jordan were fighting for a rebound in the ACC tournament and he ripped up his knee. Maybe he’ll show us his scar or something.

Of course, that means we’ll have to make another tacky-ass poster to go beside the first tacky-ass amateurish photoshopped picture of V giving Lowe a pat on the back.

Go out with those sentiments and show the world what we, as a fan base, are really made of.

Well, thanks to “Sid,” the entire world doesn’t care. It’s just you and the other fools hanging on “Sid’s” every word at the Hog Sloppin’ BBQ joint in the offseason. Hey man…remember that time you threw the ball to Bailey between your legs and he dunked it? That was cool. Hey man, remember that time we won more games then we lost? Yeah, me neither. Oh well. Let’s tell some more stories about what happened a quarter-century ago and maybe the present will seem a little less horrible.

    Three cheers for “Sid.”

The fact that UNC dominated in-state recruiting doesn’t necessarily mean we had a poor class. Time will tell, but I think I trust this staff (in contrast to the basketball staff, who I absolutely don’t trust at this point after the number of obvious recruiting blunders in first three years).

That said, it won’t bode well for our program if UNC dominates the top 10 football players in NC next year to the extent they did this year–that would set up a dynamic similar to the years when we had Sheridan and they had Mack Brown and Brown began absolutely dominating Sheridan for the top in-state talent (I always heard Sheridan was an indifferent recruiter a la Gary Williams). Sheridan’s superior game prep and on-field coaching enabled him to dominate Mack at first, but the games got closer and closer, and the recruiting deficit laid the groundwork for Mike O’Cain to go 0-7 vs. the Heels…

Noah: Just saying, don’t talk about our tradition and how we should be able to be relevant again when you’re willing to throw Lowe (a big part of that tradition) under the bus at this point in the game.

I guess the difference in our opinions boils down to this: Some fans want to win at any cost, others want to win, but not to the detriment of their alumni and current standards.

BTW, you really sound like a hole fan with the BBQ references.

Really how many excuses can be made on Sid’s behalf? How many scapegoats does he have?
Bottom line is not whether he bleeds red or is part of a tradition ?
The man can’t coach, where is the progress? He tried to press nc with horner at the point of the press? The slowest man on the floor.
This is not tee ball were effort is rewarded with a pat on the back.
Now we rejoice by losing at home by “ONLY” 17. Now that is progress?
We make fun of tech but they did beat wake .

Ben and Tracy missed a dozen chippies between them. It was an 8 point game w/ 5 minutes to go. If they make half their chippies, at worst we’re tied w/ 5 minutes remaining. That’s how I conclude the offense was getting good shots and giving us a chance to compete.

People should support Sid and his efforts to get his type of player. If he takes a talented team, which we are not currently, and stinks then it’s an obvious situation. That would be true for any coach. But to ride the guy and the program while it’s clearly in transition between personalities, style of play, type of player is asinine, short sighted, and ill considered.

  8. redfred2 02/03/2009 at 7:37 PM #

How many of the whiners, excuse me, of the fans, on here actually believe that this particular group of players can be REALLY competitive in the ACC on a regular basis?

Please stand up and be counted.

Also, can any of the whiners, excuse me again, the fans, see slightly past the surface, enough so that their brains might be telling them that A-N-Y-O-N-E who WAS H-I-R-E-D BY THEIR VERY OWN AND FAVORITE UNIVERSITY, and any BB Coach who stepped into an ACC Head Coaching position without having ANY COLLEGIATE BB coaching experience, and without having any ties to it’s sophisticated and integrated recruiting network, is naturally going to struggle for more than just short little while.

This would also be especially more true of course, considering the STATE of the entire athletics department at THEIR VERY OWN AND FAVORITE UNIVERSITY and the big draw that THEIR VERY OWN AND FAVORITE UNIVERSITY had become because of the general whirlwind of excitement surrounding the entire Wolfpack BB program before Lowe had even arrived on the scene in Raleigh.

So please try to at least put enough thought into it to put two and two together, and if you feel that you must continue spewing more completely negative bile, please don’t point it only in the direction of completely THE WRONG PERSON.

Just remember, without “Noah” none of us would know that there are some “fans” who gave up before the first tip. Without “Noah” no one would know that our coach sucks. Without “Noah” we would all have faith and hope for the future of our beloved university’s basketball program, and how foolish THAT line of thinking would be. Without “Noah” I wouldn’t know what it was like to feel like I’m gonna throw up whenever I read his posts.

Three cheers for “Noah”….IMHO…the smarmy self righteous ass of SFN.

I know I don’t post much, but I couldn’t take this sh*t anymore. Give it a rest, brother. We get it, you don’t like Sid.

^Sid was supported ,he got a job he was unqualified for ,and now hasgotten 3 years out of it at a pretty good salary.
I have seen enough ,time to move on.

  11. vtpackfan 02/04/2009 at 8:47 AM #

^ You’ve seen enough and it’s time to move on Ktoh. Well miss you already and have fun back on the PP Sports board.

Red^, Sorry couldn’t read all your post there but I would like to stand up and be counted- put ME on the record Sir.

I’m an ol’ buddy here of your’s so here’s why it’s important for me to tell you why.

This team is really competive now-more so then the the two earlier versions during the ’06 & ’07 campaigns- nite in and nite out.

We need stops down almost every other time down the court inside 10 mins. It’s do or die then and it’s up to the players to dig down deep and play what ever strategy the staff has made up till then -whether adjusted during the course of the game or not- play their assignments on D mentally tough and fight out of their mind any ounce of doubt in their physical abilities at that point. That’s the only thing holding us back-it’s the “where not playing 40 more like 30” mantra. It’s all about these D stops and windex glass rebounds inside ten mins to the last buzzer.

  12. ktoh 02/04/2009 at 1:32 PM #

^ Thank you Dr. Naismith, when is your next clinic?

  13. vtpackfan 02/05/2009 at 9:24 AM #

I’m not with the program with message boards/blogs lately. If it’s not writing a comment hoping to snare with Ole RedFred or keeping an eye out for any sign of a Shooting Guard post then it’s visiting PP for a free recruiting update and getting exactly what I paid for.

Red^ I’m not whinning but I know we will become more competive on a regular basis with this team.

Ktoh Kay-lin, I don’t know if you’ve ever referenced any terms pretaining to the game of basketball that Naismith alledgedly invented and how they relate to this team or if you just say your sick of Sid. As far as clinics you may/may not of gone to one in 4th or 5th grade so start there.
