ACC Coaches on the Hotseat? Debated (Updated 2:10pm)

One has to wonder what the brain trust at the News and Observer knows that we don’t:

“With at least four ACC basketball coaches in some degree of trouble — Florida State’s Leonard Hamilton, Maryland’s Gary Williams, N.C. State’s Sidney Lowe and Virginia’s Dave Leaito” — Caulton Tudor, in “Finding The Next Coach”

This list is is a case of extreme subjectivity that Tudor typically does a better job of qualifying. To use Tudor’s words, I don’t argue that Coach Lowe is close to experiencing ‘some degree of trouble’…but what the hell does that mean? ‘Some degree’ of trouble is a long way from being a large enough degree to be publicly addressed in an article.

I think that Hamilton, Williams and Leaito are all clearly a step closer to the fire than Sidney Lowe – who is in the middle of just his third year and has been responsible for only a single recruiting class while at NC State. Additionally, Paul Hewitt – regardless of Derrick Favors – also must be included in any list of ‘Coaches on the Hotseat’ that would go as far down the list as Coach Lowe.

Tudor should have either (1) included Hewitt on his list or (2) excluded Coach Lowe to comprise a list whose members were held to consistent standards. All else being equal, Coach Lowe is probably 5th on a list of “Coaches in Trouble” in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

It would be major news if Sidney Lowe were in any real trouble at the moment. Sure, there’s grousing about the play of the team on the Internet; but the reality of the situation is that no real sign of Lowe being in any trouble has leaked out of the NC State camp.

Fans can yack all the like on message boards, in comment sections of blogs and at the water-cooler, but that doesn’t make much of a difference where the rubber meets the road: in the ‘minds’ of the folks that run NC State’s ‘esteemed’ Athletics Department.

Tudor, it seems, forgets that Wolfpack Athletic Director Lee Fowler doesn’t ever seem to think a coach has done a poor enough job to warrant dismissal — with the most recent debacle evidenced by Fowler’s preference to give Chuck Amato another year just two weeks before the Board of Trustees told Fowler to make a choice between his job or Amato’s.

In exactly twelve months from now, if the Wolfpack Basketball Program is in the exact same position as today then the time will have arrived for a different kind of conversation. But, Coach Lowe has not had a enough time to complete even half of a friggin recruiting cycle. Barring any misconduct, its likely he won’t – nor should he – be replaced until ample opportunity has flushed through the program in which he is in charge.

“The volleyball team has won 3 conference games in three years under the new coach (0-fer in her first two years, but broke through for 3 big wins this year).”

I can live with that from volleyball. They had lost 71 straight conference games under the previous head coach, before she was ultimately fired. It’ll take time to turn around the doormat our volleyball team has become, if that’s at all possible.

“Tarantini’s soccer team has won 14 conference games since 1997.”

What’s frustrating in the non-revenue sports, is our neighboring schools have all put together pretty good teams in sports like men’s soccer.

With the exception of Carolina’s women’s soccer team, which is a dynasty and the premier woman’s college soccer program in the nation and has been for as long as I can remember, the rest of the schools – WFU, Duke and UNC – have built up their non-revenue sports, which are successful at the national level.

I admire UNC’s athletics department. When they are second to someone in the ACC in any sport, they make sure they don’t stay in second place, let alone slip to doormat status.

They’ve been doing this for decades. I can’t imagine UNC not investing in woman’s soccer and running through a series of coaches to catch up to NCSU, if NCSU had the kind of success UNC has had in that sport.

On a side note, why isn’t our Athletics Department pimping Cullen Jones and his gold medal for all it’s worth? We have an alum who won a gold friggin’ medal in the past summer Olympics, in a sport, which got a lot of publicity and I hear very little about him from our AD dept. If I wasn’t paying attention, I wouldn’t have known who he was or where he went to college.

And to not put Hewitt on the list compaired to Lowe – is there anybody in the country doing less with the talent and stars Hewitt has?. There are to many people that actually think Lowe is doing a decent job – who in the ACC is doing more with less talent than Lowe?

    In no particular order:

This is the quintessential argument among us this year.

I would argue that Lowe was pretty good in year one. In fact, if Engin doesn’t go down, I suspect we come very close to the NCAAs.

I would argue that year 2 could have been more successful if Degand doesn’t go down against Cincy. How hard was it to get the ball up the court and get into a set last year? I would argue that it is much better this year. Also, our effort, heart, and desire seem to be much improved.

I would also argue that there is NO WAY IN HELL Lowe is getting nice and comfortable. This has got to be eating him alive. If it’s killing us, it’s got to be weighing heavier on him.

I feel like my arguments are sound and the others are incorrect or flawed, but I suspect everyone else feels the same about theirs. What can you do? Somebody’s got to be right. Eventually.

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, then every day (or in this case, Wolfpack basketball season) would be Christmas. Is this what the fanbase has come to? Fashioning elaborate “but for” scenarios to explain shitty results in past seasons? Come on…stuff like that is for chumps. Have some pride as a fan–pride enough to man up and admit we are absolutely horrible.

OK, so my bad on the 1-15. Still think if we finish 2-14, AND something bad were to happen that reflects poorly on Lowe’s management of the program, he could be fired after this year. I agree that finishing 2-14 alone won’t do it.

  5. BAC79 02/02/2009 at 4:55 PM #

“I would argue that year 2 could have been more successful if Degand doesn’t go down against Cincy.”

So our meltdown lack of effort, heart and desire were due to Degand going down against Cincy?

“I would also argue that there is NO WAY IN HELL Lowe is getting nice and comfortable. This has got to be eating him alive. If it’s killing us, it’s got to be weighing heavier on him.”

I don’t know too many reasonable people who would disagree with this statement.

“What can you do? Somebody’s got to be right. Eventually.”

Good point, we can’t do anything but watch and hope things improve. But, the question remains at the end of which year do we figure out who is right? year three, four, five or six?

One last comment. Since none of us can predict the future, any of our future predictions can’t be anything more than just that, predictions. Our main disagreement seems to be How is the program today, right now and what if anything can be done to make it better.

Sid ain’t going nowhere. Only way he gets canned is if he starts showing significant progress and we up end the Heels’ success which will NOT be allowed to happen.

Everyone in power(Swofford, Bowles, Fowler, and Oblinger) are contempt with a mediocre program at State.

The other way Sid would end up leaving is ala Sendek and Amato. Find a better job because the heat has gotten to hot in Raleigh.

Fowler is too much of a spineless ass to actually fire someone and take accountability that he hired the wrong coach.

    Sid is NOT going anywhere.

“Our main disagreement seems to be How is the program today, right now and what if anything can be done to make it better.”

Nah…we all agree the program sucks…

The only question is who is the right person to turn us around. Is Sid the right person? Who knows…

Some do and say he’s not…

Others haven’t made up their minds…

No one, I think, feels 100% confident he’s going to get things done…

So here’s your answer on why Hewitt isn’t on Caulton Tudor’s list (from the ACC Sports Journal)

“A shocking upset of Wake brought some much-needed relief to the Yellow Jackets. Normally, you’d say a coach in Paul Hewitt’s situation needed that win to help his job security. Normally though, coaches aren’t protected by a buyout of over seven million dollars. In other words, Hewitt’s not going anywhere.”

More from last Friday’s Atlanta Journal Constitution about Hewitt’s buyout at

It’s too early to oust Sid. Herb’s turds haven’t even flushed. Give him at least another season or two. Of course, Fowler won’t fire Sid unless he’s forced to.

Md ain’t been doin’ too hot lately but I’m not so sure why Gary Williams is considered to be on the hot seat. He’s got an an NCAA championship and lots of tournament appearances.

It is amazing how the same people supporting TOB’s content to win enough games to stay employed, want Sid gone because we can’t be in the top 10 in the nation.

Think about it, we finished 6-7 in football and had a poor recruiting class. UNC out recruited us badly. Which we have to deal with in basketball, now we have to deal with it in football. The argument is that TOB can make below average players great. Of course, not good enough to compete for a national championship. But we expect Sid to recruit and win a national championship. Sort of funny.

Tudor is full of it. He is getting this stuff from all of the Sid haters on this blog. Exactly, what we should be trying to prevent. This does not help recruiting and it will prevent Wall/Cousins from coming. Good job Haters…

  11. BSIE80 02/02/2009 at 5:55 PM #

Sid will leave if he feels he does not have support.
    Something we will regret.

  12. PAJ 02/02/2009 at 6:07 PM #

I don’t understand how people can even think about passing judgement on any coach, much less one of our own on court legends, until he gets a full complement of his players.

It further boggles my mind that some of the geniuses on here and other sites cannot seem to process the talent/personnel limitations that Sid inherited. I am actually encouraged by the way we played against UNC even though we lost. We simply do not have the horses to run with those guys (yet). The fact that we had a chance to take it down to the wire with a few more made shots says volumes to me about how well prepared our team was and how effective Sid’s offense can be.

All these people calling for a change need to sit down and shut up.

  13. BAC79 02/02/2009 at 6:18 PM #

“The fact that we had a chance to take it down to the wire with a few more made shots says volumes to me about how well prepared our team was and how effective Sid’s offense can be.”

I’m sorry, I don’t buy the argument that we take it down to the wire with a few more made shots? We lost by 17 points, do the math. That is more than a few more made shots.

How effective was Sid’s offense.? Was it more effective than our defense?

We lost this game defensively because we consistently failed to play transition defense and played poor defense in the paint. Carolina killed us in the paint something like 30-6.

And, I re-read all of the posts here and did not see anyone saying fire Sid now. The only change anyone is asking for is better performance from the team we have.

This is the third year in a row where we are 10th place or worse. Not exactly the definition of progress to me.

“Think about it, we finished 6-7 in football and had a poor recruiting class. UNC out recruited us badly.”

They may have out recruited us badly but the last time I looked we kicked their ass 41-10. I will take that every day of the week.

Your post is anti Sid, any way u package it.
    We don’t need it.

“I’m not so sure why Gary Williams is considered to be on the hot seat”

    G. William’s program’s graduation rate is one of the worst, if not the worst, in the ACC. It’s all well and good, when your teams winning in bunches, but when they’ve struggled to make the NCAA tournament the past few years, those sort of things start to stick out and work against a coach.

Maryland’s current AD has done a good job with hiring new coaches and has gotten a lot of success in sports, which they had struggled in earlier, such as football and women’s basketball.

Sigh…why’d we decide to stick with Turner instead of her…it’s not like we didn’t have people in the athletics department who were close to her…

  16. BAC79 02/02/2009 at 6:24 PM #

BSIE80 We don’t continue to need being the perennial cellar dwellers in the ACC either.

  17. wufpup76 02/02/2009 at 6:33 PM #

Before we get too carried away, I believe we should thank Tudor for putting this list together … you know, just in case.

*Maybe* Lee Fowler will bookmark the webpage and have a list handy … as opposed to last time 🙂

Wulfpup: Do you think Lee has a computer at his Lake Gaston estate?

It’s been a banner weekend for the N&O, if you think about it. Saturday morning’s paper has the topline of ‘Why Can’t State Beat Carolina?’ — overlooking that they have a Hall of Fame coach who has a NCAA Title-capable team, then Sunday their article focuses on State’s fans being mean to and hating Tyler Hansbrough, plus the bonus of Tudor’s piece, which seems designed just to rile up Wolfpack fans.

Then today, they talk about how UNC owns in-state recruiting in football.

    They are what they are.

  21. choppack1 02/02/2009 at 8:28 PM #

I’d have one question for Tudor…

How come no blogging on AD’s on the hotseat?

Seriously, if you want to get 1000s of State fans behind, why not write an article critical of Lee Fowler.

  22. Noah 02/02/2009 at 8:30 PM #

Think about it, we finished 6-7 in football and had a poor recruiting class.

Um. What? When? Three years ago?

Frankly, if posting negative things about Lowe would get him fired, I’d post a hundred times more often than I do.

But don’t worry about it. In five years, Lowe will still be here. You and “Sid” can get together and talk about old times over a plate of rubber chicken at the WPC meeting in Hickville.

  23. Wulfpack 02/02/2009 at 9:58 PM #

Debbie Yow just nipped Gary William’s hot seat status in the bud. He’ll be back.

But one Robert Montgomery Knight today said he would return to coaching under the right circumstances. Do we pass muster?

  24. blpack 02/02/2009 at 10:01 PM #

We played about like we always do on Sat. Show some signs of progress and then give up a few quick points and we’re behind the 8 ball again. We just aren’t very good. We have some help coming and a few new faces are welcomed on the roster. Year four is big for Lowe. As for Fowler, maybe he is on the hot seat?

  25. wolfpackbball 02/02/2009 at 10:16 PM #

Class of 89: My point was to rebut what I consider chump arguments that I read on here every day. If we’re going to view Sid and the numbers alone, fine, there’s no denying what they are. I also think many other factors need to be taken into account. Mass exodus in year one-Simmons, Brackman, and released recruits among the others I mentioned above.

BAC: I said I could argue we’d have been more successful, not world beaters, but not cellar dwellers either.

Noah: If you would post more to get Sid fired, then I think you are a great ambassador for not only the university, but for the whole fan base. I would like to extend that nomination to you. Go out with those sentiments and show the world what we, as a fan base, are really made of. I think that your inclination to have Lowe fired (you know Lowe, without whom we would have much less basketball ‘tradition, one of our own, partly responsible for one of the two banners that mean the most) is a great attitude. And the hickville reference, I must say, you are classy ’til the end.
