Pack Grinds Out Fifth ACC Win, Terps Claw Back to Bubble

For all the crap he has (rightly) taken, Courtney Fells really sacked up for the Pack today. He played excellent defense on Landesberg, and was the only State player not to panic in the last minute of the game. After Horner repeated his horrific clutch free throw shooting against teams from the Old Dominion, UVA had the ball down 3 with 16 seconds to go. Then, Fells made the play of the game – he fouled. The Cavs had nailed three after three late, and entropy was most definitely not the Pack’s friend. Fells wisely forced Landesberg to make both ends of a one-and-one (which he did), then demanded the ball and nailed 2 FTs to re-set things with 7 ticks to go. So, he fouls again. This time, the Cavs missed with the pressure on, with Fells skying to secure the rebound and the win.

I don’t mean to soft sell the Wolfpack’s problems today, of which there were many. NC State’s best offensive player failed to score in 22 minutes of play. Our starting point guard posted a horrific 0:7 assist-to-turnover ratio (and was still in the game down the stretch, which says all you need to know about our guard situation). But the Pack still found a way to win. And that’s how you maximize your potential as a team – find a way to get it done when you aren’t playing well, or as today, when you are playing like complete shit for long stretches at a time. Yes, today’s effort probably doesn’t beat anyone in the league but Virginia, but it still counts as a W. Thank God, the disaster is averted. Thank Tracy, CJ, and Dennis for the first 39 minutes, and Courtney for the rest.

Around the ACC, Miami beat Boston College convincingly. That’s one down, three wins to go if Jack McClinton is to put his dancing shoes on. The schedule is somewhat favorable, so don’t write the Canes off. In a real shock, Maryland rallied from 16 points down to stun the Holes in overtime. Gary Williams officially qualifies for undead status at this point. He’s harder to kill off than cockroaches or black mold (and about as welcome in your family’s living room).

What does it all mean? I have no idea. The ACC tourney should be loads of fun, though. Want to make yourself completely insane? Try to name your first team all-ACC. It’s hard enough to narrow it down to 7 or 8, let alone 5.

Charlotte Observer Page One of Sports Page-“Tar Heel Guards Are Down Again”, no mention of the loss in the headline.

Page 8c when they finally get to the State game-“Wolfpack Starts Fast-And Then Hangs On”.

I thought the little blonde on one of the Charlotte TV stations giving the scores was gonna have a fit yesterday that State won and her Tarholes lost!

“One time it was near the end of the game, and yes, we were trying to eat clock, but there was one hell of an easy basket and Ben wasn’t ready for the pass (where it was intended). He swung his hand in a circle to indicate they were moving it around and eating clock, but I think Javi made a good decision on that one.”

That’s a perfect description of what happened on that play Sw0rdfish. I’m thinking that IF McCauley had taken an aggressive lane to the basket and scored a two, or possibly three with the foul, then we’re further in control and UVA is sitting even further back on it’s heels. I did not like the fact that McCauley did not improvise and was then allowed to bail himself out by pointing the finger elsewhere in giving the “motion” signal as an excuse. I also did not like the fact that Lowe jumped on Javi for making a very heady play as well as a GREAT pass that SHOULD have led to a very easy bucket.

I’m also thinking that the Coach might kind of change his tune after he’s had a chance to see the replay.

That does suck that Lowe got on Javi for that play. I didn’t see that part and thought it was a good pass on Javi’s part. It wasn’t an incredible over all game for him but I do like what I’m seeing from him. Getting Degand up to full speed or just getting him to a point where he can properly manage the game to spell Javi would be a plus for this team. I still wonder what happend with Mays.

Off topic-but I hope Wake beats the devils until their blue today. It would be nice if the won by like 40 points.

  4. wufpup76 02/22/2009 at 2:30 PM #

Take this for what it’s worth, but Degand was the best point guard in the Wake Forest game – this includes Teague and Smith from WF (Javi was pretty good in that game as well). Of course, WF plays a type of style that is more suitable for the way Degand likes to play anyway.

So, even though he hasn’t looked the best since that game I think there is still potential/hope there … Mays as well.

… Unrelated, but Lewis Clinch is finally going off on someone besides us, but GT is still behind Clemson at the moment. That would be a really bad loss for Clemson.

  5. redfred2 02/22/2009 at 2:46 PM #

This is just an observation, so please don’t read more into it, or think that I’m totally down on Degand. I am not.

But from what I’ve observed, Degand has a tendancy to lean over and challenge his defender, kind of eye to eye and man on man, while dribbling low to the floor for a few seconds, and he seems more focused on getting that first step in order to blow by, rather than just looking for his teammates and managing the court. I think he’s effectively limiting his own options and making it harder on everyone because they, his teammates, are possibly standing around and waiting on him to go through the motions of his set routine, BEFORE they get into their offense sets like they normally would.

Again, just an observation, don’t hate me for it.

Javi made 2 no look passes that resulted in turnovers. In both instances, he was anticipating his teammate to move toward the goal. This would normally be acceptable, however, in a close game where we were trying to value the ball and stop UVA’s momentum, you can not go with no look passes. You need to be sure of your passes. This is why Sid called out Javi on those plays. Good coaching…

Javi and Tracy for most improved player(s)

  8. redfred2 02/22/2009 at 4:03 PM #

“In both instances, he was anticipating his teammate to move toward the goal. This would normally be acceptable,…”

It’s more than “normally acceptable”, it’s what they are supposed to do everytime the opportunity presents itself. It’s also what their point guard is supposed to do.

I understand what you’re saying, but whether it was a “no-look” pass or not, the ball got exactly to the place where his teammates SHOULD HAVE BEEN. I can’t fault Javi for having the ability to do that, and his ability to anticipate is something that the others on the team should be keenly aware and taking lessons on.

This is Javi Gonzales we’re talking about though, so folks consider it foolish when he makes a play like that. Now if, OTOH, it was someone else, say like a John Wall maybe, who made that pass, then who do you think get the blame for not taking full advantage of the situation and not going to the basket like John Wall has ALWAYS anticipated his teammates would do?

It may not be time yet, and that day may not have been yesterday, also Javi may have been the only NCSU player that was still aggressive and not tenative out there, but there will come a day when that type of a play will SLAM the door and spell “LIGHTS OUT” for whoever the WOLFPACK is facing. We’ve just been on the other end of the stick for so long that it’s hard to believe that one of our own could make a pass/play like that at the end.

Again, if Teague, Lawson, or someone with more of a big time reputation makes that same pass, who do you think gets, or at least shares in, the blame for it’s failure?

  9. TheCOWDOG 02/22/2009 at 4:14 PM #

^ Red, are you baiting?….”Don’t hate me for it”?

What the hell has happened to you?

For cryin’ out old, you’re right about Farnald’s initial looks. Why apologize?

The reason that Sid got on JG is simple.
He expressly, obviously, did not want the boys to attack the basket that early in the clock, period.

Even if a potential back door score was there on that play, why do you go against the page that everyone else was on?

Mc made a move in to back the defender up and the UVA guy was anticipating an outlet pass, hey, great opportunity and great idea on JG’s part that only resulted in a freakin’ TO.

Ya can’t have 4 guys running it the skipper’s way and 1 one his own.

Right or wrong, ya do what the Skip tells ya to do.

I saw weakside help from UVA closing fast.
Had Mc gone for the back door, who’s to say that he wouldn’t have been shut down, and because State was supposed to swing it around,( guys on the perimeter ) would have been trapped into an early bad shot?

I did not like how Mc showed his teammie up, however.

But the way Lowe greeted Gonzo told me that he was free lancing and over thinking at the time.

I am subject to further review, because intially I was pissed that Mc didn’t see what JG saw.

In fact, the more I think about it, I wouldn’t blame Gonzo for biting that twirling finger off.

It only matters ’cause these are the kind of things that created my new catch phrase of uphill basketball that was quoted post game by our opponent.

  10. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 02/22/2009 at 4:17 PM #

Javi didn’t have a good game but some of those turnovers were not his fault. Lately I would rather have him in the game at the end than Farnold.

Regardless another good win because any win in the ACC is a good win. Who would of thought four weeks ago that State’s biggest concern down the stretch is whether they can hold on to a double digit lead.

I think it is great that State was able to win even when Costner didn’t play well. I hope that Smith can start hitting a higher percentage of when he is a foot from the basket. Hopefully he will gain a little respect from the officials and start getting a few more fouls called when he goes up. They seem to let him get hit pretty hard before giving him the call.

I love watching this team play now but for some reason they seem to act like the ball is a hot potato.

Way to go Sid and staff- You have clearly done some work to improve this team. Still a ways to go but we can all hope the worst of days are in the past.

  11. redfred2 02/22/2009 at 4:48 PM #

    Cowdog,

That’s then up to the SENIOR PLAYER, Ben McCauley to pull it back out. Javi had two guys occupied, or at least leaning his way, and Javi had enough wits about him in a high pressure situation to recognize it and try to give his teammate an option to take advantage of what the other team was GIVING. So McCauley should have been more than able to make the play, or get rid of the BB to an open man.

“What the hell has happened to you?”

I don’t know, I think I’ve been pretty consistent in my views around here, positive and optimistic mainly, but not so much that I couldn’t see when there were problems that needed to be worked out. Everyone that was once totally down on this team and especially the coach, and the same folks I have been steadily encouraging to see the positives since way back when, have now leap frogged me and taken a totally opposite position, and they’re now saying that I’m the one being negative.

All it took was a just FEW WEEKS of better play, and man, if you even mention any of the problems that are STILL HERE, and the ones that EVERYONE has been discussing around here on a constant basis for what seems like forever, then you are now considered as The Negative Nancy.

Maybe it’s just me. Where’s the Midol?

Hate to get off topic but have you guys watched the NFL combine…

ANTHONY HILL LOOKED GOOD YESTERDAY ESPECIALLY IN THE CATCHING DRILLS.

ANDRE BROWN WAS 5TH QUICKEST AND RAN A 4.44 40 TODAY AND MIKE MAYOCK RAVED ABOUT HIM. I BET HE MOVES UP THE BOARDS AND IS A NICE PICK UP IN THIS DRAFT.

HILL WOULD MAKE A NICE LATE ROUND PICK FOR A TEAM AS WELL.

GO STATE AND LETS WIN 3 OF OUR 4 NEXT BBALL GAMES AND MAKE THE TOURNAMENT!

redfred is one of the most consistent people on this site and I certainly enjoy his insights.

State fans have endured a lot bad days for a long time but for the first time in a long time I see better days ahead in basketball and football.

  14. TheCOWDOG 02/22/2009 at 5:09 PM #

^ have to ask my daughter about the midol…although I don’t think she’s stocked
    near well enough.

Want to be clear as I can, Gonzo, as many have posted, put the ball in places that should have clicked.

Not going into my same ol’ shit castigating anyone that was flaming on Lowe. I don’t blindly believe, but I see his coaching ability and one couldn’t separate him from 90%
of skips that are out there

    NCAA or bust

  15. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 02/22/2009 at 5:29 PM #

One thing that is different about Lowe than at least some coaches is that he is a champion and has a resume unlike most others. We will see if it all works out but we know that Sid has spent his life winning and learning from winners…

“He [Lowe] was fortunate enough to learn the game from some of basketball’s greatest coaches, from Hall of Fame DeMatha Catholic High School coach Morgan Wootten to NC State coaches Norm Sloan and Jim Valvano to his NBA mentors Flip Saunders and Mike Fratello. Between them, Lowe’s influences coached teams that won five high school national championships, two NCAA titles, five ACC championships and a pair of professional basketball championships.

Lowe spent the last 23 years playing and coaching professional basketball, winning three Continental Basketball Association championships as a player.”

  16. howlie 02/22/2009 at 5:56 PM #

The end-of-game endbounds where Ben couldn’t complete the pass to Javi three feet away was astoundingly horrible.

The VA defender was positioned behind, with his elbow hooked over TOP of Javi’s shoulder. When Ben made the pass, the Va defender slung Javi back behind him (as he sidestepped him) and caught the ball cleanly, while Javi [who had been in front] went sailing on his butt backwards.

The ref was standing two feet away and ‘saw’ nothing. When an offensive player goes flying backwards–THROUGH a defender–there is a FORCE which is PULLING a man out of position. How the ref could ‘see’ nothing, was astoundingly horrible.

Lowe has one of the worst NBA winning percentages of all time, so let’s not get too carried away with the “winner” label as a coach. That is untrue. He is making some measurable progress thisb year no doubt, but we are still slated in the bottom 4 of the standings. Next year ought to be very interesting, and it’s time we break through.

Wuf- Tark’s winning percentage in the NBA wasn’t all that great. Lou didn’t do all that great in the NFL. Lowe’s NBA record probably isn’t as representative of his skills than when he played. The NBA is more about the franchise than the coach. Obviously Sid had talent to become the youngest coach in the NBA at the time. Sid didn’t have the talent that Nate and Vinnie have had.

I’m not trying to make excuses for Lowe, yet I am, but I wouldn’t look at his NBA record as a measure of the man’s abilities.

I did not see the game. I am happy with the W. Just win baby. I don’t care if we win ugly, pretty or in between. We need wins every time we play at this point.
I did read that Costner lost his paternal grandfather on Thursday, and I hope people will ease up on him. I remember losing one of my grandfathers at this age and the first three to four days after his death were not easy times. A lot of people at this age have not lost anyone that they love and it effects every aspect of their lives for a short time.
Go Pack. I have to pull for Duke tonight because I do not want us to play at Wake after they have been beat in their previous game. They are already gunning for us after we beat them in Raleigh.

I think the tone on this blog is around what it should be at this time. I wouldn’t expect or want us to all of a sudden with a few wins, look the other way and not discuss the ways to improve. People seem cautiously optimistic, and looking forward to the future.

The tone before and right after the VT game I felt like was more reactionary than anything. People were a little too upset I felt like and not giving the team its fair shot. People seem consistent in their comments for the most part from what I can read.

What I don’t get is when people say that he was a winner as a player but not as a coach. I’m not talking about winning percentage when I say that Sidney Lowe is a winner. The same qualities that makes you a winner as a player, make you a winner as a coach. People say you need more than ‘love’ for your school to really wanna win bad. I agree, but don’t we all work a little harder for teachers we respected? Businesses we appreciated?

If your telling me that Barnes or Calipari would wanna beat UNC and win the ACCT and National Championships AT NC STATE, I don’t agree. Lowe loves this University more than any other institution or team in the country, pro or college, and yes, I think that makes a difference.
