#3 UNC Outscores Wolfpack, 89-80

  NCSU (14-10) 36 44 80
#3 UNC (24-2) 39 50 89

Carolina was too much for NC State to handle last night in Chapel Hill last night, and they handed the Wolfpack an 89-80 loss.  The Wolfpack played well in the first half of the game, holding the #3 Heels to only a three-point 39-36 lead at the halfway mark, but in the second stanza, Carolina’s multiple threats were able to out-gun State.

“This time,” Wolfpack guard Javi Gonzalez said, “at least it was pretty close the whole game.”  Unfortunately for the Wolfpack team and its fans, it wasn’t close enough by the final buzzer.  Still, Gonzalez had a point — Carolina blew out NC State in the RBC Center on January 31st by a 93-76 count that wasn’t even that close.  Last night Carolina had to work harder for the win, and the Wolfpack has  clearly shown some improvement since the first meeting — but the contest last lnight also showed how far it NC State to go last night until it can compete with and defeat an elite team like UNC.  Progress has been made, sure, but there is much more progress left to be made.

Wolfpack head coach Sidnet Lowe said in the post-game interview that his team “came out with good energy and kept ourselves in the ballgame. I thought our guys gave a pretty good effort, but we turned it over a couple of times crucially and gave them an opportunity to get out and run on us.”  In the end, that made the difference for the upstart Wolfpack.

Carolina improved to 12-1 against the Wolfpack since Roy Williams took over at his alma mater before the 2003-04 season.

“One thing I like about Lowe is he clearly hates to lose.”

^Very evident how disappointed / upset he was on the radio interview.

And good point about finishing strong. Rot in hell Bersticker.

Also, good to see Nieman sitting behind the Pack bench … loved that kid when he was playing.

“Are Trevor Ferguson and Julius Mays still on the team?”

    Yes, both dressed tonight.
Unless you were at practice and saw those two out playing Javi and Williams, there’s no need to insinuate that they were simply “fogotten.” The word has been for the last two weeks that Javi is playing great in practice. Nothing on Williams but it looks like he is replacing Trevor as the shooting guard off the bench.

I am seeing major improvement in our play and mental toughness. Sid is getting his job done. We can say that Ole Roy out coached Sid in the locker room at half-time, but when you have a team full of HS AA’s, it’s a lot easier to “coach.” My question is if he is such a damn good coach, why did it take until half-time to make those simple adjustments?

My comments regarding Costner lean less toward “disappearing” and more toward a defensive adjustment. It is not unusual at all for a player to have a great first half and the other team make adjustments to stop the hot hand in the 2nd.

I don’t know how we will do against our remaining opponents, but if I were them, I’d be more than a little concerned about the Pack.

The F-bomb was related to a question asking why Carolina did not press and trap tonight. He was upset by the question and said that he isn’t the smartest guy in the world, but he knows when his team is not good at something and they do not press and trap well. He went on to say that the talking heads on TV and the armchair quarterbacks do not attend his practices and do not know what his team is good at and not so good at. Then he ranted about how terrible his team traps–I think he called it “friendly trapping from 17 feet away.” Somewhere in all that he let the F-bomb fly as I outlined in an earlier post. Several Carolina fans have told me that Roy is good for at least one 8-10 minute rant on his weekly radio show when some fan calls in and has the nerve to question his strategy.

Lowe coached a good game tonight…the team wanted to quit at times, but I don’t know if it was him, them or both – but no one did. The team did look very tired in the second half – and I think some of the touch fouls demoralized us a bit. Tracy Smith is a beast – but he’s a beast on the foul line too. The man’s game is so strong down low, teams are going to start hacking him to death if he doesn’t get over the 65% mark.

This entire effort bodes well for the future. Keep it up guys, a hot UVa team is up for us Saturday.

First, I never thought I would love Javi so much. I was as ready as anyone to boot him out a few weeks ago. Major props to Coach and the team for sticking with him.

Second, with a few blatant no calls by the refs (i.e. traveling, over the backs), I would have loved to see Sidney tear into the refs. He seemed really laid back the whole game, and wasn’t too fired up. Maybe it was the tv coverage I saw at Reynolds, but I wanted to see him get behind his team. Overall he coached a great game though.

Where was Fells? Who knows. I about have a heart attack every time he passes the ball…

“They were chanting “Start your tractors!” …

homo douches have to eat, don’t they?”

And people ask why I asolutley dispise Carolina. It’s cause these douchebags say crap like this. I tell people all the time that they wouldn’t understand if they didn’t grow up here in NC and that I think tha the rivalry between State and Caarolina runs deeper than then the Duke one

TV5 just showed Roy drop the F-bomb and Jeff Gravely then chastised him saying, “Coach, you can’t strike live interviews.” Thanks Gravely, that was Suiteresque! I hope Sportscenter runs it and makes Stewart Scott slap Roy’s wrist.

We are now officially in the precarious position that another conference loss will knock us out of NCAA Tourney consideration barring an unlikely run through the ACC Tourney. We have posted one “good” win on the year against Wake, and that’s looking less and less “good” as the season progresses given Wake’s slide.

Our inability to finish games against Davidson, Marquette and Florida was pretty much the nail in the coffin. THAT’s why I was so pissed when we blew those games beause I KNEW a winning ACC record would be nearly impossible with this bunch.

We played a good first half and a piss poor second half. It went about as I expected. Why Lowe won’t double Tyler Hansbrough is beyond me. Golly, he’s only averaging 29 points agianst you shooting 69%.

Fells again was a no show and we were outscored by 30 in the paint, like last time. We just don’t have the horses against those guys. Going to take one hell of a recruiting effort to even get close the next few years the way Roy is bringing them in. Hansbrough, Davis, Thompson and Zeller would never leave the floor if they played for us. That’s how much more talented they are than us and that’s just in the frontcourt.

Hats off to Javi for a great game, though I am concerned about May’s future with the program. We got great guard play for a change tonight but still got run out of the gym the second half, so our problems are much deeper than guard play.

I can’ put my finger on it but there is really something that I do not like about this team. We have such potential but there are always a few lapses in games that really cost us. And when we went to the zone to begin the second half, UNC went on a 12-2 run if I recall correctly, and Hansbrough had his way in the paint. Throw that out against UNC if we are fortunate enough to have another game against them in the ACC tourney.

UVA will be no pushover, and as I said, a loss eliminates us from the NCAA’s. These are the games we HAVE to win if we are going to progress as a program.

It’s about what I expected but -DAMN JAVI!- find out what pissed him off and bottle it.I would much rather beat them in thr ACCT.

  11. com state10 02/18/2009 at 11:37 PM #

The way Sid talks about the team after the game, and rarely puts it on his shoulders, has pissed me off in the past, but tonight and recently I thought he has handled the post game a lot better. Tonight:

“I don’t like to lose, but I’m proud of my guys. I’m proud of the way they played. This is a very good ballclub, Carolina is good… I’m very proud of our guys. We did a lot of good things.”

“I’m happy with the way we’re playing. If we continue to play the way we’re playing now and sometimes better, we’ll be fine. This team we played tonight is a very good ballclub, obviously.”

I am really looking forward to Saturday, see you guys there.

Why Lowe won’t double Tyler Hansbrough is beyond me.

    Danny Green, .458 from 3
    Wayne Ellington, .394 from 3
    Ty Lawson, .494 from 3

  14. jay95 02/19/2009 at 3:02 AM #

Didn’t get to watch the game because of work, but it didn’t sound bad on radio. I believe this team has improved by leaps and bounds throughout the year and I may actually be looking forward to next year (that scares me). I believe we can beat any team in the conference, even the Heels! Go Pack!!

  15. Texpack 02/19/2009 at 6:55 AM #

I am really encouraged by the improved shooting of CJ Williams. I only got to watch the second half last night but my son raved about Javi in the first half. Smith, Javi, Williams and Costner (if he comes back)will form a nice core for the team next year. I think we can make the NIT and with lightning in a bottle at Wake, maybe more.

  16. Alpha Wolf 02/19/2009 at 6:59 AM #

I am starting to believe that this team, if it plays well, can beat anyone outside the top 10. Add Duke and Wake on nights when it plays really well.

The margin for error for State is still very small, but it is undeniable that they are playing with much more poise and focus than they did in the beginning of the year. Give credit where it is due — the coaches never gave up and kept this team on an upward arc after many of us had washed our hands of them a few weeks ago.

  17. PackWolf7 02/19/2009 at 7:51 AM #

I was encouraged by the Pack’s play in the first half. Second half, well, the Holes put on a clinic. We are fortunate in some ways that what many people who didn’t watch the game will see is the final score margin of only 9 points – at Chapel Hole. I don’t think there are too many teams in the nation that can go into the Hole and come away with a win, or keep the final score that close. Carolina is playing some tough ball right now. Gotta give those hand picked Golden Arch boys some credit, as much as I hate to. They are dam_n good. And State continues to improve WITHOUT ANY McDonald’s All Stars. Gotta give Sidney some credit here, as well as some players, like Javi, who are working hard. Switching gears, what happened to Costner and Fells last night? Both were absent, for the most part, offensively. The holes had a lot to do with that, but you need to get more from your veterans. As for Javi, congratulations, young man. You have come a long way.

  18. Daily Update 02/19/2009 at 8:15 AM #

There aren’t many teams(including Duke) who can compete with UNC this year. Roy has been very fortunate to get some NBA quality players where it just worked out that they stuck around for 3+ years.

I would like to give myself props for my comments on Javi on the entry on Saturday about Degand’s improved play. Except I only gave him enough credit for having the ability to be a quality backup PG for us. IMO, Javi can play at this level and he has just had something mental going on all year. He has had big games against UNC twice and Duke, so there is no reason he can’t play against anyone else on our schedule. Hopefully he can finish strong.

Horner looked good again…finally the shot is falling. T. Smith is a manchild and CJ Williams continues to show that he may be a player. For all intensive purposes, we are looking to finish strong, land one or two more recruits, and then get ready for next year.

I don’t care so much about beating UNC this year. It is too much to ask. What I do care about is that we are seeing young guys step up and have big games. We just need to keep it up. Win 3 of our last 5 to finish 7-9 and the season is a success for Sidney. Win four of five and maybe all of the “coaching” concerns can be set aside until next season. I am damn impressed with how Sidney has us playing. We just need to keep improving.

  19. GAWolf 02/19/2009 at 8:27 AM #

At least one win over Carolina next year should be expected. I know Carolina reloads the talent and they’ve got 5 on their bench today that would start over many guys on our team. Still, they will lose a ton, and as you’ve pointed out we have a lot to build upon here. If we’re ever going to regain some confidence against the Heels, next year is the year. I hate to even say “wait till next year” because that concept gets misconstrued by many Pack fans, but the truth of the matter is next year provides us opportunity that as you’ve pointed out we simply did not have this year barring some sort of freak show.

  20. PackWolf7 02/19/2009 at 8:35 AM #

Very good comments by both GAWolf and Daily Update. Has the Pack turned a corner? Yes. Will they continue to improve? Yes. Is ther program headed in the right direction? Yes. Quite frankly, I can’t wait for the ACC tournament. I think State will do some damage there. I don’t expect them to pull it out, but they will turn some heads.

  21. JimValvano 02/19/2009 at 8:36 AM #

I’d like to start by claiming that this is not an excuse. Carolina is the more talented team and they beat us last night.

Now with that bullshit out of the way. I wonder how many three point plays UNC had on conversions in the paint. I know “Hopsskipsjumpsbutneverwalksbrough” had at least four such occurrences where a foul was called on someone…not for making contact, but for almost touching the ball or him as he was going up. Hansbrough is an 85% free throw shooter…he converts at the line. This happened on other occasions as well with other players. I’d like to watch the game tape and see the point spread just from the free throw line on Julius Hodge type ghost fouls. I’m willing to bet it is a significant chunk, if not all of the 9 points by which we were beaten.

If you watched at the other end and had called actual fouls in the paint then Tracy “BOOM BOOM” Smith would have scored at least 5 more points last night as he was fouled in the paint on at least 20 occasions.

UNC players have been taught at the Dean Smith School of Acting, and they’ve been taught well. They’ve learned to contort and move their bodies as if someone has made contact with them. I bet they work on it in practice.

On another note. I was impressed with our overall play last night. Let’s face it, we all knew turnovers would end up hurting us. But, think about it guys…the Tarholes had to shoot 70% from the field in the second half to beat us. We went into the Dean Dome and the ‘Holes…while giving their best effort, and shooting 70% from the field in the second half, and going 13-15 from the charity stripe, and getting normal production from all their players except Hansbrough who went for 27…beat us by 9. I wonder what it would be like on a neutral court in Atlanta. I hope we get the chance.

Quite frankly, I can’t wait for the ACC tournament. I think State will do some damage there. I don’t expect them to pull it out, but they will turn some heads.

Getting to Saturday would be a major accomplishment for this team. I think that they can do that. If they draw Duke or Wake, they can possibly get to Sunday. If they draw Carolina, maybe not.

One thing, though, a lot of our players have gotten some quality minutes this year, and in a four day tournament, we might actually have an advantage over thinner benches because our guys can come in a potentially make good contribiutions.

  23. Sweet jumper 02/19/2009 at 8:42 AM #

Good effort against a very good team. It is tought to win any road games in the ACC much less at the Dean Dome against a #3 ranked team full of McD AA’s. Carolina is very good right now. Javi amazed me last night. I had given up on him several weeks ago. Tracy Smith is coming along nicely. He is starting to pass back out from the block when he does not have a shot rather than forcing it up and that is providing up open looks at 3’s and midrange jumpers. He will be a force over the next 2 years. Horner deserves a pat on the back as well. I hope John Wall is contemplating what could be next with our recruiting class, our returning players and him.

  24. GAWolf 02/19/2009 at 8:45 AM #

    Some insight from the Dome:

    1) Once again I wore red and did not hear one cross word. That is except for from my wife who like every good UNC grad believes you should go to a game and sit there with your hands folded in your lap. I thought I perfectly kept my composure minus one early foul AND goaltending call down low that occurred literally in our laps. I’d like to watch the game again and see if I was wrong. The UNC fan with us even agreed with me so that somewhat minimized the dog-house-effect from the wife.

    2) Truthfully, the game was called relatively fair. Yeah we got hosed on some calls, but they did, too. We got the benefit of several no-calls and at least 2 out of bounds calls that were blatantly UNC’s ball. I can think of some banging that was no called that hurt us and I thought our shooters got fouled on several 3 attempts, but other than that it was pretty typical of poor ACC officiating. Unlike the VaTech game, the refs didn’t play more a part of the outcome than the players and to me that’s the ultimate test of an officiating crew.

    3) We did a great job of breaking Carolina’s “fricking” stinky press. We have come MILES in the department and the credit should go to the staff. If we were still struggling to manage the press, I would have serious doubts regarding Sid because unlike shooting that’s something 5 midgets could do with the proper coaching. Apologies to any little people on the board.

    4) Speaking of the f-bomb, I hate that that is the news story today. That’s sad… for us, for Roy, and for the rivalry. See that fricking thread for my take on how I think we partially helped blow that out of proportion.

    5) Bob Holiday sat in front of us and took copious notes and his own play-by-play. I was impressed by this because I had come to the conclusion most of the talking heads in sports broadcasting these days just looked at the box score and message boards for their stories. I watched WRAL last night and while nothing he said was overly insightful, he is a Carolina grad who never not once showed partiality toward the Heels. He seemed to be a likeable fellow and kept very quiet.

    6) John Edwards sat near us as well, and it was just sickening watching people fluff him the entire game. I still can’t get over the fact that he’s a State grad and parades around the Dean Dome in his light blue sweater… nevermind his scandalous ways.

    7) Each time I go to Chapel Hill for a game I appreciate the place a little bit more. It’s just a really cool college town, and even the most intense State fan with a lick of sense would have to agree. I don’t necessarily want my one-day kids going there, but I wouldn’t disown them if that’s where they landed.

    8) There’s so much to be positive about the game last night. Our guys could have easily quit after the big run coming out of the half by the Heels. The second half Carolina just proved they are at this time head and shoulders better than us despite what was about our best possible effort. We can’t lose sight of the progress this team has made this year in just the last few games EVEN IF WE LOSE THIS WEEKEND. As State fans we need to learn to maintain some perspective that we so often lose. Here’s our chance.

  25. JimValvano 02/19/2009 at 8:48 AM #

This is WAY off topic…and I apologize ahead of time, but something has to be mentioned.

The Big Ten in all its glory had an awesome game within the upper-echelon of the conference last night. The third ranked team from their conference and ranked number 16 Nationally…Illinois played the fourth ranked team in conference in an epic barnburner. In actuality it was more reminiscent of the barnstorming days of basketball…with the Final Score…get this…a pre-shot clock era…PENN STATE – 38 ILLINOIS – 33

    The Big Ten…what a conference.
