Monday Basketball Bytes

Let’s kick off the week with some basketball.

Crunch =====> I have been accused by some of my friends of being too ‘soft’ on the current basketball situation and being more optimistic than the average fan. But, I am feeling more and more vindicated every time the Wolfpack steps on the floor. There is no doubt that a lot of fans are starting feel a renewed sense of optimism in basketball. It’s hard to believe there are only 4 remaining regular season games for NC State Basketball, especially since mid-January saw many hoping for a quick end to the season since their attention was Russell Wilson’s injury more than Sidney Lowe’s team.

Crunch =====> Hindsight can be a wonderful tool — looking back at the past 12 ACC games, if you are honest with yourself, this team has not lost any surprising games. Two come close – the blown lead against Florida State and the blown lead at Virginia Tech. Now, go check the ACC standings you’ll see Florida State sitting in second place with a surprising RPI of 16. The loss at Va Tech, will forever sting.

Crunch =====> This hindsight supports a point that I made to a friend shortly after the Florida State loss when I recognized that the Seminoles were putting together a better season than I was expecting — NC State hasn’t lost to a single team that will not be in the NCAA Tournament. (VPI is obviously the big ‘bubble’ team at the moment; by the same token, the Wolfpack didn’t lose that game as much as had it taken from them under ridiculous circumstances.) Additionally, State has defeated a Top 5 (at the time) Wake Forest and a Miami team that sits on the bubble.

Crunch =====> The Wolfpack dominated the Hokies for 30+ minutes before hell broke loose. A win there, NC State would be 6-6 in the ACC, ahead of VT in the standings, with a great chance to finish .500 or better. Can still do that, but it will be tough. Losses @Clemson, @UNC, @Duke and UNC – those are better teams and all NCAA locks. The loss against FSU doesnt look so bad now. The loss @ BC, on the road is somewhat understandable, especially since they have one of the leagues best players in Rice.

Crunch =====> Speaking of ‘dominating…can anyone tell me the last time that an NC State Basketball team had the offensive efficiency and the ability to take twenty point leads in multiple ACC games? The Wolfpack have led by at least 18 points in three of our last four games – against Wake Forest (Top 5, NCAA team), Virginia Tech (NCAA bubble) and Virginia. Forget the comebacks that followed for a moment; when have we been good enough to even be able to get that far ahead of multiple ACC opponents?

Crunch =====> Looking at the next 4 games to close out the season: at Wake will be tough. Wake is a talented, but young team. Likewise, they tend to struggle on the road and play well at home – wins against Duke and UNC in the The Joe). This is the toughest of the 4 games remaining. Maryland and BC at home are two winnable, but very tough games. Both teams feature a point guard that can go-off and dominate a game (MD’s Vasquez and BC’s Rice). Control the PG position against MD and BC, and NC State will come out with wins. @Miami to close to season will probably be a standings game, meaning identical or close records with the winner getting the higher seed in the ACCT. Miami’s arena has never been intimidating, but Miami’s Jack McClinton doesn’t seem to care. Additionally, dead environments don’t necessarily work well for traveling teams. Let’s hope that game is for .500 or better for NC State.

Crunch =====> Speaking of Vasquez, his performance Saturday was one for the ages – a triple double with 35 points. He is the main reason Maryland is now squarely on the NCAA bubble. Maryland does not have a talented team across the board, but they do have a talented PG. Looking at all the ACC teams, those with very good point guards are in position to make the NCAAT. Those without, are struggling or on the outside looking in when it comes to the NCAAT. The 2 exceptions are Duke and Clemson – both have servicable PGs, but not stars at the position. GT, UVA, NC State, VT and Miami all have major questions at PG – and those are the 5 teams on the outside as we head into the home stretch.

Crunch =====> Kudos to Florida State and Leonard Hamilton. This is Hamilton’s 7th season, and he finally will lead the Seminoles into the NCAA Tournament. FSU has not been to the big dance since 1998 and Hamilton’s seat was getting really warm in Tallahassee. Having an All-ACC performer at the point guard position in Tony Douglas has given the Seminoles the leadership needed to win close games against tough opponents – something FSU lacked in previous seasons under Hamilton. Would Hamilton have been given an 8th season to make the NCAAT? Probably not, but that’s all a moot point now.

Crunch =====> Take a step back for a minute. It would be an amazing feat for NC State to finish anywhere near .500 in the toughest basketball conference (by a mile) in the country during Coach Lowe’s third season and after what happened last year. Don’t forget — NC State plays the TOUGHEST schedule in the ACC. So, reaching .500 for us is a helluva a lot different as it is for everyone else.

Crunch =====> The NC State baseball team had a tough beginning to its season, losing 2 of 3 in the round-robin tournament played at Doak Field over the weekend. Now, baseball is different than football and basketball in that even good teams lose many games. However, giving up 11 and 8 runs to Atlantic 10 opponents Rhode Island and Xavier is cause for concern for a NC State pitching staff that lost its complete starting rotation from last year. Plenty of time to recover from the 1-2 start, but you have to consider this a red-flag on what the season might hold going forward.

Crunch =====> For folks that keep their eye on the numbers, the following are the latest RPI’s for the ACC from Collegerpi.com. Now that Quinten Jackson is no longer around to lazily construct the basketball schedule, perhaps we can be more strategic in the future and try to target OOC games against opponents in the #150-#250 range as opposed to a menu of games against teams sub-300.

Not sure if anyone else is watching, but Oklahoma looks pretty lost w/out Blake Griffin on the floor … Lost to Texas on Saturday and in danger of losing to Kansas at home.

If they want to hang on to a 1 seed they’d better get it together …

  2. kyjelly 02/23/2009 at 10:45 PM #

Wow, blinded by the light. Now we are going to the ncaa?

  3. mescarlett 02/23/2009 at 10:46 PM #

This is a little off topic, but I feel the need to go on a rant about Lee Fowler …

Has anyone else seen this article posted on WRAL today?

WRAL Reports Coaching Search for Women’s Basketball

I think I am going to be one irate little Wolfpack fan if Stephanie Glance does NOT get the job. There might be one other person I would agree to let Coach this team but I know she is not leaving Tennessee!!

BSIE80 posted “I would also like to see the 64 spots identified by x number from each conference, similar to when we only had 1 going to the NCAA. This would eliminate all this bull about who is the 63rd and 64th rated team in the nation. Eliminate the bubble garbage…”

The problem with that approach is how do you determine how many teams each conference gets in the dance? Does is change over time? How does it change? In addition, you have the regular season small conference champions getting beat in their tournaments and they end up getting invited to the tournament and taking away an extra at-large spot.

Without getting into details, the champions league system in Europe for soccer has a pretty sophisticated formula that accomplishes this. Instead of conferences, they have countries. Countries like England, Spain, Italy and Germany (ACC, Big 12, SEC) have their top 5 conference finishers qualify for the “dance”. Countries that are second tier like France, Netherlands, Russia (PAC 10, Big 10) have their top 3 teams qualify for the dance and then the next 2 teams go through some knock-out qualifier rounds to try and get in. For some of the bottom feeders (Luxembourg, Albania, Malta, Ohio Valley conference) only their top 1-2 teams are eligible and they have to go through multiple rounds of qualifiers (no automatic bids). The key is these “settings” are established by the performance in the actual tournament over the most recent 5 years. The teams accumulate points for their country (conference) and after each tournament their current point accumulation replaces the one from 5 years ago. Going into next year, the countries ranked in the top 4 spots get their top 5 teams automatically in the “dance”. The next 3 countries get 3 automatics and 2 qualifiers etc. One thing to clarify is some countries get 5 teams while others only get one. The point accumulation is averaged by dividing by the number of teams the country started with.

Sorry if this got too technical but I think it is an interesting approach. If a conference like C-USA consistently does well in the tournament over a 5 year period, it could start getting more teams into the dance while the PAC 10 for example might start dropping slots if they keep getting eliminated in early rounds.

mescarlett, I hope this is only a formality and Coach Glance is hired as well. Tough night for the ladies tonight, though.

  6. Clarksa 02/23/2009 at 11:38 PM #

    2002 – 7 seed
    2003 – 9 seed
    2004 – 3 seed
    2005 – 10 seed
    2006 – 10 seed

but…but…but…we went to 5 straight NCAA tournys and we should be happy with that!

  7. WV Wolf 02/24/2009 at 12:24 AM #

With the discussion of the Vandy and Wisconsin tourney exits I dug up an old file where I wrote down how we were eliminated from the NCAA tourney (didn’t have any details on the 1st year loss to UConn)

    2002 – lost by 3 to UConn
2003 – lost by 2 to Cal, led an overtime game for a grand total of 1:17
2004 – lost by 2 to Vandy, led by 9 with 2:29 to go, didn’t make another field goal
2005 – lost by 9 to Wisconsin, 9 point halftime lead, outscored by 18 in the 2nd half
2006 – lost by 21 to Texas, outscored by 16 in 2nd half

Yes, we made the tourney 5 straight years but in at least the last 4 we flamed out in spectacular fashion.

  8. Wulfpack 02/24/2009 at 6:37 AM #

If coach Glance isn’t hired I am DONE with Wolfpack athletics until Jed is fired or until he retires. That would be a gross injustice.
Davidson is currently on the outside of the bubble. Unless they win the SoCon, they are NIT bound. Charleston is the favorite in that league.

  9. waxhaw 02/24/2009 at 7:46 AM #

After the implosion last year and the loss of our two best players, I think we should give Sid a pass on the schedule this year.

It makes sense that it was constructed with the idea of making the NIT not the NCAA’s.

If we can win 7 or 8 games in the ACC and sniff the NCAA bubble, I would put this as Sid’s best coaching job so far, and definitely exceeding my pre season expectations.

I would agree that some of those games versus RPI 250+, should have been “winnable” games versus RPI 175+ but I’m not convinced on how easy that is to do.

  10. kyjelly 02/24/2009 at 8:21 AM #

Another pass for Sid? Well why not he has a pass for life here. As long as that bar is set at the lowest rung here all is well!

  11. Rochester 02/24/2009 at 9:10 AM #

Granted some people are getting a little overoptimistic about our chances right now, but we are 3-1 so far in the second half of ACC play and the mood has lightened because people can see improvement being made. These constant “another pass?” comments take on the feel of an ankle-biting dog after a while. Yap-yap-yap.

Sidney’s going nowhere anytime soon, so enjoy the improved play or keep on yapping. Whatever suits you best.

  12. Ed89 02/24/2009 at 9:25 AM #

I tried posting this yesterday, but it didn’t submit and I lost it, but as far as the discussion about # of teams the ACC gets, the solution is that the teams that do get in have to win some games. Last year, we had 1 Sweet Sixteen team. We need the number 3, 4, 5 ACC teams to start making noise (getting to the Sweet Sixteen or beyond) before we really have a great case, but overall I agree, the ACC gets screwed. Seems like I remember in the 80’s, the ACC typically having 3 or 4 in the Sweet Sixteen.

As far as our worst lost in “recent” memory, I’d have to go with Wisconsin in 2005 in the Sweet Sixteen. We had just beaten UConn, and a win would have matched us up with UNC in the Elite Eight. I mean we can always dream, but a matchup with UNC to get to the Final Four?? It wouldn’t get much better than that. That game was our “chance” to get over the hump, and we didn’t capitalize…still dreaming…beating UNC and going to the Final Four….it wouldn’t get much better.

  13. MatSci94 02/24/2009 at 9:39 AM #

Didn’t we just replace the guy who does the scheduling for basketball? I would expect this to improve going forward.

  14. wufpup76 02/24/2009 at 9:48 AM #

I’m no fan of Gary Williams, but some of this stuff is funny / right on:

“I never wanted our players to think we were backing off. The margins never affected us. What difference does it make if you lose by 15 or 30? Does the score look better on ESPN? Who cares? I’m past that.”

^That’s a good attitude to have after you’re blown out, but the blowouts do matter to the committee.

“We talked about how tough our schedule was at the end of the year but the good thing is that if you don’t have those games then you won’t have a chance to elevate your position. If you’re .500 in our league and don’t go to the NCAA tournament then something is wrong.”

^Atta boy, Gary. Stick up for the conference and toe the line.

^ Agree sid is not going anywhere anytime soon. I also believe that as long as he is here we are destined to be happy with a 8th or 9th place finish.

“If coach Glance isn’t hired I am DONE with Wolfpack athletics until Jed is fired or until he retires. That would be a gross injustice.”

Some of you will never learn…”home cooking” coaching searches that favored insider or favorite son candidates over a professionally conducted, national search is what got us Les Robinson, Chuck Amato, and Lowe.

I think Fowler is a boob, but I’m 100% behind him on this decision. Tragedy aside, the women’s team is a train wreck, and Glance was on board as the ship was sinking…

  18. waxhaw 02/24/2009 at 10:21 AM #

How is giving him a pass on scheduling for 1 year, the same as giving him a total pass?

His first year the schedule was awful. We only played 4 non conference teams with a final RPI of 150 or better. (due to conference games and an ACC title run our schedule was number 28th overall in difficulty)

His second year, we played 3 non conference NCAA teams and 7 with an RPI of 150 or better. Our schedule was once again, one of the 30 hardest in the country.

If the schedule next year returns to something similar to last years, I don’t see the point that some of you are trying to make. It’s more than a little ridiculous to complain about scheduling for a team that can’t win enough games to make the NCAA’s against an easy schedule.

“I think Fowler is a boob, but I’m 100% behind him on this decision. Tragedy aside, the women’s team is a train wreck, and Glance was on board as the ship was sinking…”

^I don’t have a problem with a national search, I just hope Coach Glance is hired. The women’s team has been solid the past few seasons and is always one of the best defensive teams around. The current edition is extremely young and there is a dearth of talent with some good seniors gone from last season’s squad. Combine this with Coach Yow’s passing and I’ve been impressed with what the team has been able to accomplish – and this includes taking both Duke and Chapel Hole to overtime with a huge talent discrepancy.

I would hardly call this a sinking ship, but to each their own.

“Conferences will produce cheat sheets about their respective conference teams. The living document can be updated throughout the weekend on an internal Web site. This will be the one place for the conferences to shill for their teams instead of trying to politick in a variety of forms. It’s how the Big Ten will explain that Michigan State had to play North Carolina in its fourth game in seven days after playing three games on consecutive days in Orlando at the Old Spice Classic. And injured forward Goran Suton didn’t play that day. So that is the excuse for MSU’s getting rocked by the Tar Heels at Detroit’s Ford Field.”

Here will be the ACC’s “cheat sheet”:

“Go Devils and Holes! The rest of our teams SUCK! Only Duke and the Holes can make us money! Woo-hoo!!!!!!

    Signed, John Swofford”

“I would hardly call this a sinking ship, but to each their own.”

’06-’07 season: 25-10, 10-4 ACC, 4th seed in ACC tourney (lost championship)
    ’07-’08: 21-13, 6-8 ACC, 6th seed in ACC tourney (lost 1st round)
’08-’09: 12-15, 4-8 ACC with two games left plus tourney.

If it ain’t sinking, then it’s sure leaking pretty badly…

    Crunch ==> We still suck

  24. Dan 03/17/2009 at 9:57 AM #

Crunch—> Whoever wrote this article should be banned from ever writing another bball entry. Just once I’d love to see a blogger man up to his lack if understanding. Talk about blind Monday Morning QB’ing. Way to take advantage of the one anomoly of success during a season if failure to pounce on those who understand how poorly this team is coached. Maybe if the writer had the balls to say this before the anomoly it could be respected even if it were wrong.

We criticize the press all the time for articles way less wrong than this one has proved to be. Obviously, the writer is too eagar to prove the program isn’t drastically worse than it was four years ago. The funny thing is that we did deserve better. But what we got was a whole lot worse. Which means we should be complaining a whole lot louder. But at the same time all of us who clamoured for change should be able to recogize now how much worse off the program is now. Many here thought any change at all would be an improvement. It’s time to man up and accept that that was horribly wrong.

Make no mistake. I’m not defending those who think Sendek should still be here. The move was necessary. A 10 seed isn’t good enough. But if that isn’t good enough this is dispicable. But articles like just give credence to those mock bloggers for being idiots with computers. How in the fuck could anyone feel vindicated in any way watching this team? I mean, Holy shit! We fucking suck!

(I can’t wait to see how this comment is edited and annotated in the typical bullshit SFN selfserving fashion. Seriously guys, have you ever seen any respectable blog pull shit like that before. Bush league.)
