Game Film Breakdown of Each of the 21 Turnovers Against GT

Credit and props to SFN reader TXPack for this breakdown of yesterday’s game at Georgia Tech.  — Alpha

Turnovers remain a big concern for the Wolfpack, especially headed into the critical final stretch of the season. Here is a breakdown of the 21 turnovers from yesterday in Atlanta:

First 5 minutes of the 1st (6 TOs)
1* – Smith passed to the back of Fells after a defensive rebound

2 – McCauley lost the ball at top of the key

3* – Costner inbound and incepted by GT (GT 3 pts)

4 – Fells lost his dribble at top of the key

5 – Gonzalez bad pass to the middle (GT 2pts of free throw)

6* – Smith bad inbound to Fells’ foot (GT 2pts)

Last 3 minutes of 1st (3 TOs)
7 – Gonzalez bad pass intercepted (GT 3pt3)

8 – Costner bad pass to Gonzalez out of bound(GT 2pts)

9 – Degand bad pass to Fells, intercepted by GT (GT 2pts)

1st 5 minutes of 2nd (5 TOs)
10* – Costner inbound went out bound (GT 2pts)

11 *– Smith lost Costner perfect pass under basket

12* – Smith lost defensive rebound to GT

13* – Degand bad pass out of baseline

14* – Degand bad pass (GT 2pts)

15* – McCauley lost ball when went to basket

16 – Degand lost the ball when drove to basket (GT 3pts)

17 – Williams bad pass

18* – Williams lost the ball to double team and called for intentional foul

19* – McCauley lost the ball

20 – Smith lost Degand’s pass

21* – McCauley lost the ball after received an inbound (off own foot)

1, 3, 6, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 18, 19, 21 (total 12) were careless inbound and passes. Our point guards (Degand and Gonzalez) were contributed to 7 TOs. Smith, however, were related to 5 TOs, which is the area he needs to work on. McCauley had 4 TOs by himself and missed few free throws.

For us to have a chance against UNC, our point gurads need to step up and continue making plays. We have to move pass the half court within 5-6 seconds when pressed, so we can have time to setup half court offense. Our bigs need to cut down the TOs and make good passes out of double teams.

^I saw that “ping” from Pitt Blather and read the article as well, Alpha …

They (that blog) are most decidedly already nervous about Mazzone … That would be funny seeing him back in Carter Finley this coming season

“Don’t worry guys … I used to be the OC here. They’ll never see this set of plays coming! :

    2-yard swing pass left …
    2-yard swing pass right …
    RB draw!

    Surprise, b*tches!!”

As painful as many of those turnovers are for me to watch I can only imagine how Sid and Monte feel. As upset I get, Sid and Monte seem to understand they have work to do.

I have to hope the worst of State’s pg problems are in the past. At the very worst State will have Farnold and Javi with experience. Mays has shown skills. Not that any of these guys are going to be first team all ACC but they are 3 guys growing into the role.

…And playing Tech seems to me like playing in the driveway against the younger brothers. The younger guys swarm, slap, and scap and get some good plays and it annoys the hell out of the better/older guys.

I think this is one reason why State struggled at the first of both halves. When Tech’s guys were fresh they could annoy the hell out of State but as the game went on they made mistake that led to either a foul or an easy score. Kind of the nature of a less talented team but a team that plays hard for 40 minutes.

It will make for some short film sessions for our D, that’s for sure.

The BC guys used to moan and groan about Bible, but I like the way he calls games. I can think of maybe three plays that made me wonder and those were probably situational and rolling the dice. OTOH, Mazzone used to have me bellowing in the stands every week.

  5. wufpup76 02/15/2009 at 7:15 PM #

^I agree about Bible … I haven’t seen much to be complaining about, even when Evans was starting for us in TOB’s first season

I like how we actually try to stretch the field … I’ve been impressed

***BC up on Duke w/ under 3 to play for anyone around and interested … been a good game

  6. wufpup76 02/15/2009 at 7:27 PM #

And BC states it’s case … Impressive home win over Duke

All the better for us to beat them (the Eagles) at our place 😉

  7. wolfonthehill 02/15/2009 at 8:35 PM #

^ We’re gonna need to win all but one we have left… then two in the ACC tourney. Probably a bit of a stretch for us at this point.

  8. wufpup76 02/15/2009 at 8:46 PM #

^Not really what I meant, but yeah that’s probably about right …

  9. wolfonthehill 02/15/2009 at 9:12 PM #

OK – then I agree that it makes our pending home win against BC at least look a bit better, even if it doesn’t mean much for us… 🙂

  10. wufpup76 02/15/2009 at 9:17 PM #

BC has owned us since joining the league … It’d be nice to beat them and hurt their chances, and if it happens to help us so far as any postseason tourny then great!

    Miami-Holes putting on a show …

  11. wufpup76 02/15/2009 at 9:20 PM #

Not sure if anyone is watching the Miami – Holes game, but they just gave Hansbrough a huge call … Bonner is raving about it, but it looked like a blocking foul to me

Under a minute to play, Canes had the ball down 1, running in transition – offensive foul … OUCH

  12. YANCSSB 02/15/2009 at 9:21 PM #

Interesting breakdown. Thanks for putting that together, TX (though, for the sake of all of our diplomas, the grammar could stand to be cleaned up a bit…then again I’m a GN, so I tend to notice it more than the next man. 🙂

Lawson WILLS the Holes to a win in Miami …

Reporter: “Psycho T, how do you feel about Lawson out-WILLING you tonight?”

Hansblah: “He didn’t look for ME enough. My WILL is still superior. Ask EVERY SINGLE COLLEGE BASKETBALL COMMENTATOR that has ever lived and they will glady tell you so …”

  14. Greywolf 02/15/2009 at 9:52 PM #

    Bennie,
I expect that we would be in accord were we able to talk back and forth. No intent to call you out. I was making the point that we sometimes are quick to call a play poor Pack performance when credit should go to our opponent. No matter how bad our ACC opponent might be, they all have SOME good people and good coaches if not great coaches. Great defensive play can make any offense look bad for a play or two or three.

Regarding missing out on the one and done’s — if missing out is even the way to put it:
Tom O’Brien brings in “3 Star” players with the character and potential to grow and develop into “5 Star” players when they leave. Does anyone think that if given the chance TOB would not bring in “5 Star” players with the character and potential to grow and develop into “5 Star” superstars when they leave? TOB knows the SoCals, Notre Dame’s, Alabama’s, etc., are getting the 5 Star recruits – the physically mature young athletes who are ready to play as freshmen. It has nothing to do with BC or NCSU being worthy of these recruits. We and BC are ‘worthy.’ It’s that the football elite establishment have certain advantages over some not-so-elite schools.

Young men mature at rates that are up to 3 years in physiological differences. For the most marked differences check out a group of 15 year old boys. Some are shaving and some don’t have body hair yet. When I coached soccer, I was envious of one of my 15 yo’s equipment. (Yes, he was a minority. 😉 )

Whether we like it or not, Sidney Lowe may have to bring in some physically younger players and develop them in skills and fundamentals as they mature. Our chances of turning our program around overnight is much higher in basketball than football but not likely. Mental toughness or maturity is also a factor and immaturity is exposed to a far greater degreee in BB IMNSHO.

In considering how long to give Sidney, we might want to consider that established programs have the jump on programs that are not so well established or have fallen out of favor over time. (Ex: NCSU) Every coach has to establish relationships with HS coaches in his primary recruiting area. I don’t want to go into AAU coaches but it’s a whole nother ball game out there. Identifying players who will mature is even more important than ever.

To assume that all players coming into college are the same relative age physically and mentally is naivety at its fullest extent. NCSU BB for an undetermined number of years may have to do the TOB thing in basketball to some degree to supplement the 5 Star recruits until we once again become the establishment.

Right now I am excited about Sidney Lowe being the coach at NCSU and I’m excited about NCSU basketball in the long haul. The short haul looks like it might be exciting too. Go Pack

One thing about these TO’s – it looks like a team effort. And here is where I really probably attribute this to having a HC who knows only the NBA. I don’t watch a lot of it, but I don’t think the pros see a lot of zone full court pressure.

The good news is that I’ve seen us transform to a team that gives sorry effort and doesn’t come out of the gates ready to play, and stinks on the boards and commits TO’s – into a team that commits too many TOs. So, I think we’ll see this improve in the future. If we do see this improvement in the future – and I hope we will – people will be tempted to blame McCauley, Costner an Fells..To me, it will just show how much our HC has learned.

Very interested to see what we do vs. the Heels. Our PG’s need to have a great game and we can afford to be soft.

And yes, that charge call that Hansboro got in his favor was BS.

Our RPI is now 89. I think it will go up even if we lose to UNC if we can beat UVa.

Cross your fingers folks…We had a drastic turnaround in football, it’s possible it could happen in b’ball too.

Lawson WILLS the Holes to a win in Miami …

The stat that stands out is 2 free throw attempts from Miami and only eight fouls the entire game from UNC.

Pardon the off-topic post, but I found this interesting tidbit over on PP today concerning a favorite topic of this blog:

“I heard a little rumor today while at the golf course. I heard Fowler was out. I dont know when it will happen but this came from a MAJOR contributor. I also heard a few more tidbits that I cannot share. Just letting you know what I heard.

Before the noob comments or any of that crap, I have been on this board since 1998. Originally aywolf. Lost my name in one of the transitions.”

Can anyone say if this has legs?

  21. Mike 02/15/2009 at 11:35 PM #

old13, I dont beleive it. Not doubting what you heard or questioning your credibility, but I just find this very hard to believe since Fowler is doing his job so well(making money, doing interviews with the media). Fowler also gets rave reviews and awards………..and it’s all the fault of a few loonies on that internet thing that are dragging him down. How in the world could this fine university chase this fine AD out of town after all he has done for the school?

  22. YANCSSB 02/15/2009 at 11:38 PM #

Sounds doubtful. Nevertheless, it stands a pass through the rumor wringer to see if it stands up.

YANCSSB, thanks a lot for your comments on grammar.

If I knew Alpha would make my comments a headline, I would have had my 12 year old help out:)

Grew up in a non-English speaking country, I went to NC State for post-graduate degree in the early 90s. I was in PAMS, English was not a mandatory class back then.

My English is kind like current state of Pack basketball – lack of fundamentals:)

  24. YANCSSB 02/16/2009 at 1:19 AM #

Sorry, TX, if I came across as a smartass (I am). I saw TX and assumed you were from Texas, though some would argue that they don’t speak much English down there, either. 😉

Excellent work on the post, though: It quantified what we saw on Saturday very well.

  25. Alpha Wolf 02/16/2009 at 1:26 AM #

If there was a grammar error in the headline, it was mine. I have been sitting in this chair for 17.25 hours now, thanks to an incompatibility with a Microsoft XML update and an IBM product. And people think it is all fun and games being an IT guy.

If I was a professional writer, at least I could be drinking something other than Diet Coke. Or something in my Diet Coke other than ice cubes anyway. 🙂
