Basketball: Offense & Defense

Joe Giglio and ACCNow are at it again!!! Here they go again putting together some great work and elevating the News & Observer’s credibility!! (potentially with some guidance from our own choppack…see our comments section)

This morning Giglio offers some fantastic insight into both the 2008-2009 version of the Wolfpack basketball team and into Coach Lowe’s broader strategy and perspective. We will highlight some of Giglio’s points in this entry, but there is plenty in the piece that you will enjoy that we won’t quote here.

I think Giglio’s lead assessment is accurate and serves to enhance the importances two general deficiencies on this club: (1) our struggles with turnovers at the point guard position, (2) our inconsistent rebounding. (Note the improvement from going from a bad rebounding team to a more inconsistent rebounding team, largely thanks to the playing time given Tracey Smith).

N.C. State’s not a bad team, not since the first seven ACC games anyway, it’s just a team with no margin of error.

Offense
I think it should be noted that the general feel of NC State’s offense has progressed light years from where we stood when Coach Lowe took over the program. The impact of our obvious need for a premier point guard not withstanding, this offensive system is both effective and very efficient.

When veterans Brandon Costner and Courtney Fells combine for 18 points, like they did Thursday against Wake Forest, there aren’t many ACC teams N.C. State’s good enough to beat. That’s even with above average contributions from Tracy Smith (18 points) and the point guard position (20 points from the combination of Javy Gonzalez and Farnold Degand), which State got in Thursday’s 85-78 loss against a good Wake team.

State’s problem is it’s not good enough to win games with its defense. Ergo, it has to outscore the opposition (as opposed to holding it to fewer points). That means when scoring leaders Costner, Fells or Ben McCauley decide to take a powder — as they have been apt to do in the past two seasons — the chances of victory go with them.

Later in the article Giglio highlights something that we have shared with you various times in the past – Coach Lowe is known in the basketball community as an excellent offensive tactician.

If he doesn’t make it in the college game, it won’t be because he was out X-and-O’ed. Lowe is what Will Ferrell would call an above-average “strategerist.”

Thursday’s game offered both ends of the spectrum in offensive philosophy. No team in the ACC runs more halfcourt sets than N.C. State. State runs a wider variety of plays (for example, than Boston College) and more player-specific plays (for example, than UNC) than any other ACC team. The problem, since Engin Atsur’s departure in 2007, hasn’t been the design but execution.

Defense
There is no doubt that the Wolfpack’s defense and rebounding have not been strong suits over the last three seasons. With this said, I enjoyed Giglio’s insight that there is more design/strategy to some of these deficiencies than I previously recognized. That doesn’t mean I necessarily agree with the strategy – especially now that State has a roster that can legitimately go 10+ deep with talented athletes like Johnny Thomas and CJ Williams – but, it is interesting nonetheless.

State’s a passive defensive team by design. Coach Sidney Lowe would rather contest shots in the lane than pressure the perimeter. That strategy has its merits but creating turnovers and points is not one of them.

State ranks 12th in the conference in steals, 10th in blocks and 10th in field-goal percentage defense. Those are not the marks of a good defense. That’s the down side for State fans.

The bright side is better athletes usually make better defenders (save for the anomaly that is Wayne Ellington) and Lowe’s next recruiting class upgrades the program’s talent level.

I just don’t see Costner coming back. I think he has had enough. If he needed some classes to graduate, or if he thought we had a chance to win a championship, or if he thought he could improve his chances for the NBA, he may consider it. But I just don’t see any of these things happening for him.

Also, he has been criticized pretty badly the last 2 years, so I would move on if I was him as well. Especially, if he can go to Europe and make money playing ball.

How do we have scholarships available if Costner were to stay any way? I don’t see anyone transferring…

Thanks guys, I’m off to a Firefox download. I’m assuming to keep IE for those odd cases and that helps. The tech guy today was telling me to delete it.

Highstick, you can also download an IE tab for Firefox (just search for that in Google or something) which allows you to open something using IE inside of Firefox if necessary. Very handy.

Feel Sidney is doing a fine job, would be great to have 2+ more wins, but we still haven’t lost to a team that will not make the NCAAs as of today (Va Tech, BC are still bubble team, assume Davidson gets in)

Two quotes that stood out in JP’s article:

“Lowe’s coaching success at his alma mater will ultimately depend on how well he can recruit and overcome the speed bumps he has hit in transition from the NBA.” Defense thing is a result of transition from NBA obviously.

“Lowe’s learning curve has been steep in managing personalities and minutes. Since a 79-68 loss at Boston College on Jan. 24, he seems to have a better handle on his roster. He moved Smith to the starting lineup, going big in the process, and shortened the bench to eight players.” There were a of quetions marks until then. The team had an real opportunity to give up and fall apart this year and it has not . . . due to Lowe and his staff.

I agree with 61 in that Sid is not going anywhere. He has a lifetime contract with Fowler and unless Fowler leaves or there are major shakeups in State admins. Sid will be here for a while.

So by default we are pretty much forced to support Sid whether he is good or bad.

I do think next season we will see less mental errors on the team just like with the football team under TOB.

Once Sid has his full system in place we will see the progress of the system his is trying to implement.

Old parts of the Sendek offense like BC, Fells, and McCauley do not match what Sid is trying to run.

Next year these parts/players will be gone!

Year 5 is the true lithmus test.

“State’s a passive defensive team by design. Coach Sidney Lowe would rather contest shots in the lane than pressure the perimeter.”

It may be true that Sid would RATHER contest shots in the lane than pressure the perimeter, but we honestly suck at both.

    1) We don’t pressure the perimeter in any way, shape, or form.
    2) We STILL get beat off the dribble routinely due to lack of speed and defensive capability from our guards.
    3) It’s rare that we get adequate help from someone down low when we DO get beat off the dribble. More often than not, we get beat off the dribble for a wide-ass-open 10-footer or layup.

There’s really no strategy that can explain our abhorrent defense, and there’s no silver lining. We’re an abysmal defensive team. Leave it at that.

On the flip side, this is the most fun, most effective NC State offense I’ve seen in… I’m not kidding… about 18 years. Put ANY kind of defense out on the floor, and this team could win 12 ACC games.

The point about consecutive ACC games is one that I noticed a few games ago… we’ve been hanging 80+ points on good teams routinely over the past 3-4 weeks. We’d have KILLED for that early in the year… and last year… and throughout the prior administration.

Quoting Section Six’s breakdown from 2/16…

“It’s been five conference games since Sidney Lowe recognized the sheer folly of leaving the human point spree that is the Macrowave on the bench. You might guess that a Smith-powered offense would be way more better than the alternative. You would be correct.

    Pace Off_Eff eFG% TO% OR% FTR
    1st5 (1-4) 65.3 94.4 45.7 25.4 37.0 35.6
    2nd5 (3-2) 71.5 110.6 56.8 20.8 29.2 41.5

Point guard play improved over the last five games, and Courtney Fells bounced back after a tough start to conference play. Also, some defenders have made the mistake of looking directly at Tracy Smith; those poor fools were instantly blinded in the presence of his glory (this has been a big key to the Pack’s transition game). The result of these and other developments is one of the hottest offenses in the ACC; 1.1+ points per trip is elite-level efficiency.”

Get that, folks… “one of the hottest offenses in the ACC”… “elite-level efficiency”.

If you can’t see that as startling progress, I simply can’t help you.

Greywolf, you kind of treading on thin ice with all that stuff about “whitey this” and “whitey that”. I take offense to that kind of talk.

    I mean, I’m white, I have a right to take offense, don’t I, at least I think I do anyway, maybe…???

    redfred,
I apology for offending your sensitivity. And for sure you have a right to take offense. But first I suggest that you make sure of what you are taking offense at. I think you are reaching to say what I said was “whitey this” and “whitey that”. Perhaps I should have said slow players instead of slow white boys. I didn’t say that white boys were slower than blacks nor did I say that blacks were better athletes. I just cited the facts relating to the players Sid inherited and those players were not quick enough to match up with better athletes such as Ty Lawson. (Faulting Javi is a bit much. Who does match up well and defend Lawson.)

The point I am making is that all the defensive gurus in the coaching world will no make up for lack of athletic ability. It has been insinuated that Sid should have a better defense because he was accountable for defensive stategy and scouting opponents offense — as if that proves he can’t coach.

My word sorry I was on vacation for a few day’s. I did not realize that an offensive system is related to points scored. Our offense for what I see is still 4 guys standing around with one guy dribbling. In the past few games we have been on fire throwing up 3’s which is great but you live by the 3 you die by it as well especially if you are a weak rebounding team! if you lose 90 to 80 you still lose ,and from all the rose colored insight and ahem NCAA talk here 10th place is still 10th place !
