Updated “State of the Program” Thoughts

wilee

OK, dark side – you win. Last night’s disastrous effort pushed me over the edge. Taking a cue from Sidney Lowe’s motivational techniques and substitution patterns, I will not order my thoughts logically and just throw crap against the wall to see what sticks:

– Sidney Lowe has clearly lost this team, for the second year in a row. That’s completely unacceptable, and could be a program destroyer.

– Sidney Lowe not only put a shell-shocked Javi Gonzalez into a tie game cold midway through the second half, but also did so without a secondary ballhandler on the court with him. Gee, who could have predicted three straight turnovers (though somehow the boxscore only lists two) in that situation? I was mildly surprised that no crazed fans charged the court to set themselves on fire in protest.

– Julius Mays kept State in the game during the second half, but don’t read too much into it. Against a more disciplined opponent, he won’t be able to run around for 30 seconds, then get an open lane or pull-up jumper. And he still finished the game with no assists.

– The “effort” lineup that worked against FSU for about 10 minutes in the second half will not be able to stand against better competition. Even against the Noles, it was weak defensively and on the glass.

– By the “consecutive ACC losses” measure, Sidney Lowe is now the losingest coach in NC State history (hat tip, SFN commenters)! That’s saying alot from an institution that once employed Les Robinson for six long years. Congratulations, Coach!

– I’ve said this many times privately, and nobody has ever contradicted it – the only staff member that seems to have any clue about “nuts and bolts” college coaching is #3 assistant Pete Strickland. That’s just pathetic.

– When Lowe was hired, I told numerous friends that the great thing was that “limbo hell” was over – Sid would likely be a smashing success, or an abject failure. Looks like I was right.

– Fellow Hindenburg program Georgia Tech comes to town on Saturday. One team has to win, the other starts worrying about a Bob Wade-like season. State would actually be lucky if the crowd is small – otherwise, the ESA will be full of very angry people.

– I watched last night’s game late on DVR (my wife and kids claimed the HDTV that was recording the game for that awful American Idol show). I sent an e-mail to fellow SFN bloggers with about 9:30 to go and State down 1, saying that even if State comes back to win, this was one of the most poorly coached games I had ever seen. I apologize for not being there live with you on the blog – misery loves company.

– Want to feel even worse? In bad economic times, I think it’s fair to assume that the purse strings of the big money donors are much tighter. I’m not sure the money is there to chase off Fowler and Lowe, much less to throw money at a decent coach for what looks like a very major rebuilding job. Thus, I don’t see any rational reason to have so much as a scintilla of hope.

    PQ,
before we get too caught up in Sendek v. Lowe players just remember that two of Lowe’s guys, Javy and Degand, sucked out loud last night. and horner was one of our better players. he’s just a tweener guy with no set position on the floor. and Javy doesn’t seem to belong in the ACC. Neither does Lowe, as a coach anyway.

as far as recruiting goes, once Favors and Cousins go elsewhere we will have Richard Howell and Tracy Smith as our big men. and horner will have to play the 4. Lowe will either bring in a Big Sky caliber center or we’ll be incredibly small. that will not work in this league.

Even if we completely tank the rest of the year, what’s the liklihood Fowler gets canned, especially if baseball has another great season (like some people seem to think will happen)?

Did anyone here go to the Coaches Q&A in the Arena Club last night?

I heard Towe was asked some pretty pointed questions (that were in line) and that Monte answered every one of them.

    I’d like to hear more.

Remember back in March ’07 when people worried Sid would leave us for the Bobcats?

Ain’t it great being a State fan.

Yep BJD – Leonard Hamilton hasn’t exactly been known for his great coaching since coming back to FSU has he?

In my head, I’m thinking that the staff watches tape, works on their offense and defense, then begins preparing for the opponent.

I’m assuming that Lowe will be back next year. Assuming that’s the case, I’ll be watching Mays closely. He does somethings on both defense and offense, that he probably got away w/ in high school (though that’s hard for me to believe) that has caused him to make crucial mistakes – (I’m thinking of his tendency to try and steal the ball w/ his right hand from the FSU guy on the break who is dribbling w/ his right hand) – the guy did a little spin move and had a clear path to the lane.

Also of note – Costner hustled down for a block – when Johnny Thomas (probably our most intense player) and others don’t get back in time to scoop up the loose ball.

I used to watch and listen to the Braves a lot. One thing they always said about Bobby Cox was that he coached the fundamentals. There are those little things you do in baseball, that if you do them over the course of the year, you’ll probably be a decent team. No difference in any sport really – there are those fundamentals that you work on – that if executed properly – 90 plus % of the time – you’ll be a decent team.

These are boxing out, good balance, and proper form when shooting, good crisp passing/ situationally appropriate passing, proper defensive stances and footwork, and beating the ball down the court (or trying to do so) on BOTH ends of the floor, and proper spacing. If you do those things well, you’ll be fine.

I don’t think that we do anything that I listed w/ consistency. We do seem to shoot foul shots well for the most part though.

Think about it – if we rebounded well, took care of the basketball, and used proper defensive technique – wouldn’t we be a much better team? Now, does anyone hear think that this team is incapable of doing that – or more appropriately, can we not find 5-7 players who can do it?

How can one say Sid is a great recruiter? Potential is just what it is, if untapped it is nothing. You all talk about May’s and I agree good or bad he has to play most minutes, but if my memory serves me well you all were singing Javi’s praises in the same manner last year.
This team, program and staff is in complete disaster mode. Admiting that Ben,Brandon and Courtney have been less than stellar is said toungue in cheek. The major blame falls on them ,but why in the world were they so much better 2 seasons ago? Was it Astur? The more I look back on that season when Astur returned he lived up to that basketball cliche “coach on the floor” something we have lacked since his departure. Last season Sid brought in JJ a great talent who either did not fit in or the others around him did not fit to him. That is neither here or there and something the coach and staff should have dealt with from the beginning.
As a coach talent is great ,but it is your job to get the most out of what you have.
Sub patterns Sid has shown have no rhyme or reason ,a kid like Thomas score 31 against towson and does not see much time for the next few games ,same deal with Williams, and that same pattern had that effect on Ben,Brandon and Courtney last season.
Lastly as the leader especially when things are going to hell , it is time once in awhile as the leader to be accountable for these failures instead of always blaming it on your kids.

    1. What are the real chances of a change (either Lee or Sidney or both)?
    2. If its not happening anyway, shouldn’t we try our best to support the program and help it succeed?

I actually think the players are trying but they just can’t put it together. Don’t know if its talent, coaching or some combo thereof. Hate the crazy substitution patterns. I would like to see Mays, Williams, Thomas, Smith and Costner on the court together more to see what they can do over a larger sample of time. I that is our lineup with the best combo of potential, talent and athletic ability.

  7. Rochester 01/14/2009 at 10:58 AM #

our big problem is that we have NO good PG.

I respectfully disagree. This is one of several problems, but it is not the big problem. Mays is good enough that if the rest of our team were as competent as he is, we’d beat teams like FSU. There are so many problems right now it is not fair to pin even the bulk of it on the PG play, except when Javi’s in the game.

And FSU did not impress me last night. That was a total blown opportunity for a win. They shouldn’t win on the road against a good team.

  8. Justin Gainey 01/14/2009 at 10:59 AM #

Favors is making his decision tonight. I saw from rivals.com that Georgia, Georgia Tech and NC State are his finalist. Does anybody think we have a shot. Only bad thing is, his friend plays for Georgia, and he said he helped with his decision. He also said, distance is not a factor. hhmmmmm

  9. BJD95 01/14/2009 at 10:59 AM #

Strickland makes a solid #3 assistant. But it’s a stretch to ask him to run the program. And as low man on the totem pole, how much authority (real and apparent, with respect to the players) do you think he really has?

  10. Gene 01/14/2009 at 11:04 AM #

NCSU Men’s Basketball Program = Duke’s Football Program.

    End. Of. Story.

  11. BJD95 01/14/2009 at 11:06 AM #

We have no shot at Favors.

  12. Justin Gainey 01/14/2009 at 11:10 AM #

    BJD95,
you are porbably right, but why do you think. Maybe because of the poor playing we have done the past couple of games. If you look, Goergia, Georgia Tech and us are all close this year record wise. I was just thinking maybe since Sid has NBA connections, and recently JJ Hickson went pro for the same position, it might help.

  13. Noah 01/14/2009 at 11:11 AM #

    1. What are the real chances of a change (either Lee or Sidney or both)?
    2. If its not happening anyway, shouldn’t we try our best to support the program and help it succeed?

    1) Small enough that it’s fine to say “zero.” It’s not zero, but it’s close enough for jazz.

    2) What you are describing is basically emotional-blackmail.

  14. McPete 01/14/2009 at 11:13 AM #

Paul Hewitt has put more players in the NBA than Sid has (1). the guy is going to play one year and go to the NBA. and it’s obvious from his list of finalists that winning is a secondary concern.

  15. Gene 01/14/2009 at 11:15 AM #

It’s our own damn fault of attending games, buying NCSU gear, and donating money to the WPC.

WE are the CHANGE, WE want HAVE.

Only by boycotting NCSU Men’s basketball can we hope to save it. Tear it down and build it back up into the program WE WANT TO SEE.

And don’t underestimate the power of boycotts, in forcing changes.

  16. Rochester 01/14/2009 at 11:17 AM #

We’re at the point where a one-and-done guy probably doesn’t help us much. Just leaves another opening on the roster for Sid’s successor to fill if we suck out again next year. I like the three guys we’ve got coming in because they all look like they’ll be here 3-4 years.

  17. Wolf Dog 01/14/2009 at 11:18 AM #

I think it time Coach Lowe looked to the future. McCauley is a ACC reserve player at best. Costner is a good starting role player on a good team not a go to guy. I hope we play freshman and build towards the future. I think we still have to give coach Lowe some time not like we have a choice and we do have help on the way. All kinds of coaching styles in college. UNX is 0-2 and Roy is known to call out his players in public. Should people be calling for his head?

We have coach Lowe because no real proven college coach wanted the job. Everyone knew this was a mess and a long term fix. What coach wanted a program headed into rebuilding years with players that suited for defense, a slow down princeton style offense, no decent center, and no point guards. Point guards didn’t want to come play for Herb so we didn’t have any. We had to go to Turkey to get our last one.

So we had a mess, we still got a mess, and we won’t know if we have someone that can fix the mess for two years. Until then we can only watch and wait.

  18. McPete 01/14/2009 at 11:18 AM #

People have already stopped caring. our attendance looks pitiful so far. there were not only lots of empty seats for FSU last night, they looked like great seats!

  19. Par Shooter 01/14/2009 at 11:20 AM #

I actually took the step described by Noah above. Let go of my basketball LTR’s before this season. Keep in mind that I’ve had the LTR’s since the RBC was the ESA and you had to wear a hard hat to pick your seats. It was actually very liberating to know that I have no financial tie to the basketball program any longer and it has allowed me to mostly avoid games this year. Last night was the first time I’ve watched us play aside from a minute here or there and it just reaffirmed what I knew from last year. I cannot stand any of our upperclassmen and it pisses me off that our WPC contributions are paying for those guys to be students at NC State. None of them deserve to wear the jersey. Our younger kids at least appear to give a damn but they are just so woefully overmatched in talent that it hardly matters. I’m afraid that this is going to get much, much worse before it gets better.

I just wanted to say that after last nights game, I have become enlightened. I have achieved oneness with the universe. Now, I see beauty in the game. The graceful motion of the ball as it sails over our players heads, or slides through their hands, or rises from the rim after their shot soothes me rather than angering me. I have come to appreciate the quiet snap of the net as the opposing team makes shots that are challenged neither by our team nor by the universe. It really is quite lovely. Also, I bought some jumpsuits and sneakers for everybody and I just made a big cooler full of red flavor aid if anybody wants to come over and have a cup while I wait for the aliens to return.

  21. jbpackfan 01/14/2009 at 11:27 AM #

    Noah-

What I meant to say was whether people thought it is a better idea to shut up and support the team or better to protest (silently but not showing up or out loud by contacting those in charge). Just wanted some opinions on that.

  22. buttPACKer 01/14/2009 at 11:33 AM #

I honestly don’t understand those who feel being a great/good fan is to bury your head in the sand and blindly/quietly support the team no matter how many blind alleys and one-way streets–the wrong way–it goes down.

I have no problem lending support when I see progress occurring. . . Here, I see regression, and cannot simply bite my tongue–because it’s what a “good” fan does.

To those who say to wait until the next couple of classes come in, before rendering judgement on Sidney, I say that you cannot bake a loaf of bread–no matter how great the quality of ingredients–if you have no clue as to the proper proportions and at what time each ingredient needs to be mixed together. . . Just like with our bball program, you end up with a big, lifeless blob of dough.

Even though I practice a “Zero Expectations” mindset when it comes to Wolfpack sports…try it, you’ll feel a lot better about yourselves…I am holding a faint glimmer of hope for Coach Lowe after this year.

I saw a bunch of freshman and sophomores having fun last night and some seniors sulking because they weren’t playing. If we are going to lose…and we will many more times this year…then you might as well play the kids who seem to enjoy playing.

  24. Gene 01/14/2009 at 11:36 AM #

“I’m afraid that this is going to get much, much worse before it gets better.”

    Duke Football, never got better.

NCSU basketball never will either. 20 years of suck is a long time to not be competitive. If we can’t turn it around in 20 years, why do you think we will do so in another 20?

  25. LRM 01/14/2009 at 11:41 AM #

It still astounds me that a coach’s performance is still judged by some folks based on future expected performance by kids that have yet to play a game in college. Raw talent only gets a kid so far without proper coaching, and Sid continues to demonstrate nothing beyond a rudimentary understanding of the college game. I’ve been watching college basketball for 30 years and I feel dumber after every State game.

I’m not necessarily on the Fire Sid bandwagon just yet, but I’ll be riding shotgun just as soon as I’m wholly confident our leadership has a transition plan in place. Because the last thing we need is another bumbling, demoralizing coaching search where we wind up hiring Levi Watkins because he’s an alum, loves NC State, and won’t say no.
