Russell Wilson Won’t Need Surgery

russellwilson21Good news on the football (and baseball) front via GoPack.com:

[NCSU QB Russell] Wilson, a first-team All-ACC performer, suffered a tear of his posterior cruciate ligament late in the second quarter [of the Papa John’s Pizza Bowl] and did not return to action after halftime. He had passed for 186 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 46 yards prior to the injury.

The injury will not require surgery. Instead, Wilson will be confined to several weeks of limited activities, followed by functional rehabilitation.

It sounds like Wilson will be back at full strength for football it’s not clear whether he’ll be back to 100% by February 20th, which is when NCSU will face Rhode Island in its baseball season opener.

Well, clearly Russell has no shot at playing either sport professionsly, so he should just quit now and take up croche’!

    gimme a break!

I don’t know whose post you are responding to, but it clearly isn’t mine. I said that Wilson hadn’t done anything to make me believe he would be a top-five draft pick. I also said he would be a better QB in the NFL than two guys who started this year.

Maybe you want to work on those context clues a little bit. Give yourself a break, maybe.

So now you are implying that Elliott Avent either doesn’t know what he’s talking about or exaggerates the kid’s potential?

I’m not implying anything. I’m stating directly that a coach giving an interview to a reporter is a poor indicator of many things. Maybe you haven’t read too many interviews, but coaches often flatter their own guys and very rarely offer bald assessments.

When you show me a quote from an actual major league scout that says, “Russell Wilson will be a high MLB draft pick,” then I will believe that an actual scout said it. Right now, all you’ve said is that Russell Wilson’s COACH has claimed that such statements were made.

    Like you said….”wow.”

Huh. I clicked on that and didn’t see Russell Wilson’s name anywhere. Can you show me where an actual Major League scout says that Wilson will be a high draft pick?

You keep claiming it. I’m assuming you’ve got evidence.

Hot dog, more of the “he’ll get hurt…he’d be wise…it wouldn’t bother me…and on, and on…”

That or, “he should only play the one sport, because it’s ALL ABOUT THE MONEY HONEY”.

AND, as always, there are those people on here who believe that Russell Wilson should lock his doors, wrap himself in a hermetically sealed, antibacterial coccoon, avoiding all sunlight, until he gets his FIRST serious offer. Then it’ll be Katy bar the door, they’ll say he’s absolutely crazy for even considering coming back or playing ANY SPORT for NC State University.

Yep, that’s exactly what all fans who want to see their teams win championships do. They jump right up and tell their best players not to play, or advize them to take ANY reasonable offer and get the hell out of town as quickly as possible.

BTW, anybody heard any news on Cedric Simmons lately?

I dreamed Russell had to have surgery and was out for next year; then, Glennon came in and became the 2nd freshman in ACC history to be named ACC QB of the year; then they two were battling it out in spring ball, 2010.

Reality will have to do… although Russell not injured is a strange kind of reality for a Pack fan.

  6. GAWolf 01/06/2009 at 7:23 PM #

Russell is adamant about playing both as his father and brother did. That was preseason granted, and pre-injury. He’d be crazy not to see how the knee progresses and how it affects baseball this spring. He’s a smart kid from a smart family. He’ll do what’s best for him and I’ll understand and support whatever the decision might be.

Just wish the kid well in his recovery and future and hope that he’s able to do both as he so badly wants to.

  7. BSIE80 01/06/2009 at 9:23 PM #

What if he surprises everyone and plays all 4 years of both sports , winning heisman, BCS championship, College World Series championship, and then plays both sports professionally taking home a Superbowl trophy and a World Series ring…. I vote for that option.
Noah could take Mel Kiper’s job also.

Noah, it’s in the subscription section. You’ll have to pay for that yourself…but it is there.

I don’t know Russel Wilson, so I have no idea what goes on in his head. But he has to have considered his options and have made a decision based on what he thinks is best for him, even if the decision is to postpone a major decision one more year. I may not like it if he goes baseball only, and I don’t think he will this year, but I can’t say I would blame him much.

Like it or not, there are no guarantees in life. No matter what decision he makes, there is a chance it could be the wrong one. He could be ruining a pro career in football by going baseball only. Could be the opposite (more probable). He could get injured and ruin either career in both sports. There is no right answer. All we can do is hope what he decides is the best for HIM.

Can you tell me the name of the scout and paraphrase what he said?

The odds of any individual draft pick in baseball having a career of more than a few hundred at-bats in the major leagues are overwhelmingly long.

If you sign a contract, you would be very wise to assume that the signing bonus is the only real money you’re ever going to see. Usually, teams consider it to be a really great draft if they find four or five guys who make it to the majors out of a single draft class.

Go back and look at The Baseball Cube’s draft section. If you’re a first round pick, a very rough guess would say you’re odds of playing in the majors (a single inning) are probably 50-50. If you’re a second round pick, it’s probably 35-40 percent. When you get to the third round, you’re down to throwing darts at a board.

The nice thing is that if you’re a third-round draft pick, your signing bonus can still be a couple of hundred thousand dollars. That can pay off your parent’s mortgage or pay for grad. school or provide you with a down payment on a house, a car and a nice start to whatever professional career you choose.

If Wilson can get that, he should take it. When it happens, I’ll applaud him. I just haven’t seen any reason to think that it will.

The average minor leaguer has a 4% chance of ever having his jersey hung inside a locker in a major-league clubhouse. Even if you are significantly better than the average minor leaguer, all of whom were or could have been (had they not jumped directly from high school) the best player on their college team, your chances of playing major league baseball are very small.

When addressing Russ’s chances of playing pro ball, most act as if him getting drafted is some big deal, as if they’re discussing him being a first-round NBA pick with a large guaranteed deal. Getting drafted and playing minor league ball is just the first step along a long path to get to the majors. Russ is not Andrew Brackman, who was an absolute freak guaranteed to be drafted in the first round, sign a big deal and have a team pour money into his development to assure that he would one day be in a starting MLB rotation. You can’t teach 6’10” and 95 mph with good movement.

Preseason baseball reports I’ve read indicated that Russ *may* start for State next year. Unless there is another future major-leaguer ahead of him (very likely not the case), wouldn’t it stand to reason that Russ is maybe not a clear-cut future major leaguer if he doesn’t start for his college team?

I’d be curious to hear from someone with more baseball knowledge than myself what baseball tools Russ possess that separate him from other college or future minor-league players. I know he’s a really solid baseball player, but so are the other 1,500 guys that get drafted each year, only 4% of which ever see the Show.

  13. Big Worm 01/07/2009 at 11:08 AM #

And I’m not attempting to knock Russ’s baseball talents, simply draw a more reasonable comparison between the likelihood of him playing football or baseball professionally. People keep acting like Russ is assured a future major league career since he’ll be drafted in the top 10-15 rounds and go play minor league baseball somewhere.

Right now, he is clearly the best football player on our team, and probably the best football player in the ACC. As a freshman. Given his height and size being a concern to most NFL teams, I’d posit that Russ has around a 5% chance of signing a free agent deal with an NFL team and sticking on a roster for a few years. His odds of playing major league baseball are not significantly better than that.

Don’t know much about baseball but I do know that Russell has a shot at playing NFL football. Don’t care how short he is. Can you imagine how good he will be with 3 more years of experience? He’s better than Jake Delhomme.

Thank you. That’s all I was asking for as well. Ian Kinsler hit forty-five points higher than Wilson, had a world-class glove and hit with power. He was a 20th round pick.

I’ve been looking at rounds 5-12 over the last couple of days. All of the middle infielders that are getting drafted are guys that hit at least .350 in college. I have found one exception so far. The Braves took Jon Schuerholz in the eighth round in 2002 after hitting .302 as a junior at Auburn.

Is Russell Wilson’s dad a GM anywhere?

The guys who are hitting between .300 and .320 are getting drafted in the later teens.

“Yes. They are pushing to get me to signed because of my athletic ability and my love for the game of baseball….” Russell Wilson, July 2007

    And

A lot of interesting coments in this re-read, including a nice little requote from Mark Trestman from a couple of years ago.

I don’t know much about the situation or even the possbility of the situation, but I have it under very credible authority that the 100% baseball conversations are being had or were recently had. There may be something there or it could just be a line item on the discussion agenda.

  17. Wolf Dog 01/07/2009 at 2:38 PM #

There is potential Wilson may not return to football. The coaching staff is well aware of his high MLB draft potential. His lack of height and inabilty to throw moving to his left makes him a long shot right now for being a NFL QB. His hope to play in the NFL may be to switch to reciever like Ronald Curry and and the fellow that’s a reciever with the Steelers now that played at Ill. against us, can’t remember his name right now.

I recently read that him playing football may actually be hurting his baseball draft status. No secret he’s projected to go in the first 4 rounds. Which would put him with a very nice contract and placed on most likely a AAA team.

As far as Rivers, those 3 straight loses his junior year and too many loses his senior year really put a damper on him picking up any real run for the big H!

    Like who?

  19. primacyone 01/07/2009 at 3:06 PM #

^Maybe the Cape Cod League could make him or break him and he needs to be there at least next year?

Maybe he needs to work on his baseball game to improve his draft status and impress doubters like Noah?

Maybe he just purchased an Insurance Policy against injury based on a projected draft baseball draft status and the policy states he can not play football.

He’d make a lot of Money in the CFL, but dang he’s small for the NFL.

I’ll think he will be back on the football field, but there are lot’s of good and valid reasons he could choose not to play football.

  20. Wolf Dog 01/07/2009 at 4:11 PM #

    you mean, like whom?

  21. Noah 01/07/2009 at 4:20 PM #

If he wants to go play baseball, then go do it. I don’t care. I thought Terry Harvey made a TERRIBLE decision to do both once it became clear that he was a legitimate MLB target. He ended with a dead arm and performed badly in both sports.

In football, I’ve seen make every throw that he’s going to have to make in the NFL, including the 30 yard frozen rope and the deep out.

What I have no seen is any evidence that he’s more than a light-hitting middle infielder. When he hits .350 or shows some power, I will believe that MLB teams are going to pick him in the first 10 rounds. When he actually gets TAKEN in the first 10 rounds, I will believe that teams think that highly of him.

Until then…I think he should play football.

If you got out of Chapel Hill more often, you might know more of what is going on in Raleigh. I doubt you’ve seem him play at all. But you entitled to your opinion and you like to let everyone know it.

^He is one fine Quarterback, that’s for sure.

He could end up being the best we have ever had!
