DBR’s Take on the Duke/State Game

Link to full article

“[Gerald Henderson is] a unique player in that he’s strong enough to put it on the floor and get by you and use his body, he can jump over you and he’s really knocking that jump shot down which makes him even tougher. You get up on him, he’s got that first step. He’s playing three or four. He can cause you a lot of problems as you saw tonight. He did exactly what a player of his caliber is supposed to do. He took over the game for a period there and that’s the one guy I talked about in pre-game to the media. He can change the game and he did it again tonight. That’s what he expects of himself and I’m sure that’s what his team expected. He did exactly what a leader is supposed to do. He took over.”

And that’s exactly what State doesn’t have. As admirable as McCauley and Costner can be, neither one is truly a leader. Last year, when they both basically sulked as J.J. Hickson proved to be a better player and took their minutes, and at any rate, neither of them can really alter State’s main flaw, because neither of them bring the ball up and neither is going to ever control it in the halfcourt game, even though McCauley is a more than adequately rounded big man.

It must be the most frustrating thing in the world for Lowe, who wore his big-game red jacket to Cameron. If you look back at his stats when he was at State, they were never overwhelming. Yet he was a superb leader for his team who got his guys to be steady and when they were in a close game hell would freeze over before he made a critical mistake. He was not just a good leader, he was an excellent leader.

He sits there and he is bound to see the mistakes coming, and he’s surely told his guys what to do and not to do. And they are effective for most of the game. But at the end, when his knowledge and experience should be most valuable, they simply can’t do what he has tried to teach them. They rush, they dribble too far, they try to make passes that are a stretch, and slowly, his team crumbles under the pressure and fails.

You can think back to any number of reasonable point guards in the past (or contemporaries for that matter), and they don’t have to be great ones, just good ones, and imagine them at State. How much better would they be? What about Terrell McIntyre? Bobby Frasor? T.J. Bannister? Charlie Ward? Keith Gatlin? Larry Drew II? For that matter, Sidney Lowe?

Just one steady guard who knew what to do in the clutch would make this team a viable tournament team. One steady guard and one reliably intelligent small forward could put them deep into the tournament.

For a competitor like Lowe, sitting and watching incompetence, when he sees the error almost every time, must just eat him alive. After this game and a number of close shaves this season, we have to say this: he’s staying in games despite a critical flaw in his team. We’d have to say that’s the mark of a good coach.

I had the same thoughts as Rufftown. Ben and Brandon need to know when it’s their time to score or shoot. If they are going to lead, then they cannot defer at critical moments.

I also thought K was giving Sid a little heads up about the game situation. He was tight with V, and I imagine he’d like to see Sid do well.

One other thought about K: he’s at a point in his career where he’s essentially untouchable, so he can say whatever he wants. He reminds me of that old guy that just says what’s on his mind cause he’s been there and seen it all. I get a chuckle out of those moments — needling the N&O, calling out NCAA selection committee, etc.

Ok – time for me to go offtopic! Sorry all!

BUT, it has been some night of ball so far …

Va Tech over Wake @ Wake

Northwestern over Michigan St. @ Michigan St.

Northeastern beat George Mason by 1 pt. to lead the CAA

Been some great games tonight – hope for another one in Clemson @ Hole

    Now, Let’s Go Tigs!

Va Tech did an outstanding job of limiting all of Wake’s strengths – it was some performance

    Go Tigers!

^ Damn I knew it would take another 15 point loss to make everyone so positive here.
I am wondering if I can get some help here please. I am trying like hell to see things they way y’all do but I am having a lot of trouble fitting my head up my butt.

I think Sid seems to be coaching better. It’s just real slow. But with Fowler as AD, I say we stick with Sid. I don’t want to chance that that man will luck up twice in a row, like he did with TOB. (Yeah, I know he hired outside help to get TOB, but “coach” won’t do that with basketball unless ordered by the higher-ups. And I don’t have faith in the higher-ups.)

^”I think Sid seems to be coaching better” “It’s just real slow” I do agree any slower and we would be heading backwards. So the boy’s from dook think Sid’s a great coach and he should stay here? Well if I was from another acc school I would relish that opinion as well. Talk about spinning your wheels.

    Amen!

I do see some progress with Lowe and the college game but of course painfully slow progress. I just hate the thought of starting over again with a new coach – especially one picked by the current administration (and I’m not speaking of Fowler alone here).

The just I get is from that well constructed commentary at DBR is that get a more favorable sitiuation personel wise in the backcourt and then lets see if anything miraculous happens. We could be talking mad science here; a chemistry project that has resulted in a Lab explosion or three thus far. Credit the writer from a follower of a rival to atleast take the time and try and identify the contents being tossed about on the lab table.

My outlook is that Julius Mays will be the a barometer from this point on and over the long (longer then 65+ teams atleat) offseason. He’s definitely MY only WTNY- actually I will still be surprised if as his confidence rises he won’t gravitate more towards the 1:1 assist/TO and become a a viable option other then the big men to get a bucke when we really need one.

His legacy he left at Indiana’s powerhouse Marion (beat Oak Hill this year because Scott Wood torched them) was one of consistent production and steady nerves when the pressure was on. Off the court what his coach said was that he was gym rat personified and we haven’t had anyone on this roster since for a long time who pushed it to the limits out of the limelight in an effort to reach the individual/team goals. As always only time will tell.

The other nice aspect to tlook forward to, and one that sort of ties into the chemistry experiments analogy above, is the familiarity the that future personnel will have with one another. Mays/Woods HS tandem- Brown/Howell AAU team mates and the following year we will hopefully pair Brown with Harrow who are reportedly thick of thieves.
Who was time to trace success stories over the history of college basketball of these type of pairings when you’ve seen firsthand what Lowe/Whitt did a long-long time ago.

VTpackfan good comments about julius he seems to be hard worker and you cant teach desire. Wood to me will be a big sleeper (hopefully like a fergie with better handles and defense with the same 3pointer) my only negative thought is that in the 90s i remember kenny inge and damon thornton going to the same high school. that brought us how many acc championships??? mabey it was just me but i believe thornton was one of the most exciting players state had in the 90’s (not saying alot) esp when he jumped OVER that 7’0″ from maryland.
If we lose out on wall, after watching Lorenzo Brown (ZO as his fans call him) i firmly believe he can be a good scoring pg for us AFTER his freshman year. he has all the moves.

I must say it is amazing to me how everyone keeps saying ‘this is the game where we’ll know for sure what kind of team we have.’

So exactly which game was that? I thought from reading SFN that we knew the team was garbage after FSU and Sid needed to go. Now, it seems maybe the team still has a chance to be good after beating GT & competing hard against Duke at Cameron. But, wait, now only the BC game will REALLY tell us what team we’ve got.

As much as it is tempting to cast judgment on the team after one game or another, it just is not fair to do so, and frankly doesn’t make sense, especially given the unexpencted ACC results we’ve already seen (BC over UNC & VT over WF). We can all make good observations about the games and what we think it means going forward, but clearly folks have been proven wrong over and over again. Last year is over and this is a new team with plenty of big games left to play. I suggest everyone root hard and let the season play out before judging them as a success or failure.

  12. vtpackfan 01/22/2009 at 11:28 AM #

Inge is the coach at Cary Academy or is that Kelly?

These two, yeah you talk about pinning your hopes on something that never delivered upon expectations. It is a little different since they came as a package w/ a coach (wow, for Pitino’s best recruiter ever he sure has to turn this trick alot). That sort of raises a flag in my , IMO, that the individual is not ready to break out of a comfort zone if they need an adult to come with them during this jump from the nest phase.

Another sign that there was a lack of discipline and focus was that one of those players go so drunk that played bowling ball down a West Raleigh Street and the parked cars were were bumpers in the lane.

Sadly my father in-law was told to give him a passing grade in an elective class that he had only showed up to attend a couple times. I think it was one of the lowest points of his long career as a professor and reasearcher at this great school we love.

That’s water under the bridge and I only hope for the best in these individuals lives, but Mays/Wood especially look like they are very prepared from the neck up to handle the immense challenge of school/acc basketball. Hopefully they can reunite and rekindle some of the sucess they achieved in the Hoosier state.

    Wolfpack Fans,

Hello guys I want to start off this post by saying I can’t wait until the game on Saturday to see if we have turned the corner and perform well down there at B.C. I really feel if we give the same defensive effort and rotate a little better defensively on pick and rolls then we should beat B.C. but nothing is a given in the ACC. If I were NC State I believe I would start the game off in a press of scored baskets to take away some of the shot clock and to keep them from getting into the tight flex offense so quickly. If we can make them work to get the ball across center then they will have 5-8 seconds less to get into the flow of their offense so quickly. I would play some man to man, I would go to the box and 1 against rice a little and I would throw in some zone…. I feel this is 1 thing you can do against B.C. to change up their flex and not let them run it at will. Also I want to say I think that Sidney Lowe is doing a great job this year and he will continue to get better as the season progresses. I believe every coach deserves at least a 4 year term to get some of his players in and to change the culture around here in which I believe he has done. We are not on the top of the ACC like we all want and deserve but he is slowly getting us in the position to do just that. We are getting some great players next year and the year after that so that will help alot. Lowe deserves the same chance as a president of the U.S. deserves and that is a 4 year term and then we will evaluate where we are and decide what to do. Sidney is coaching his tail off and it is starting to show on the court. I have never seen a NC State team play as hard as they did against Duke in the past 5-7 years that I can think of. The effort was there just a couple of things did not bounce our way towards the end and I believe we got a little tired but overall we had a very good chance to win that game AT duke I must add which is not a easy task at all. I just wish we could get a better substitution package so to speak because I feel like we are playing 2 different lineups through out the game and it messes up chemistry and momemtum. I know he is trying to give guys breaks because it is a long acc season and I understand that very much however I believe we should pull them 2 at a time and stick in 2 fresh guys and then 2 more and give 2 more a break and just kind of rotate that around so that everyone stays pretty fresh but you don’t take the whole team out and put a whole new team in. Other than that I think he is a great X and O coach and he knows how to get matchup problems and he knows how to exploit them. He has great knowledge for the game. 1 other thing is Javy needs to only play if we are up by 20 or if we are in bad foul trouble because honestly he just does not have what it takes to play basketball in the ACC. Starting 5 rest of the year should be Mays,CJ Williams, Courtney Fells, Brandon Costner, Ben Mccauley with Degand,Ferguson,Smith,Thomas,Horner coming in off the bench to give rest to our starters. I am excited for the rest of the year and I believe we will beat our share in the ACC this year. GO PACK anybody have any new information on Wall or Cousins please reply thanks !!!

Kenny Inge took over the job at Cary Acadamy. they are trying to build a team similar to word of god where they can lure all the good players out of public schools and give them scholarships to play at a small private school where they can be watched over academicly and athleticly. if you ask me thats bad for public school athletics but thats a different topic. personally i think mays is a better start than degand (even though he was much more effective than mays at duke) for the simple reason of we seem to start out the game scared and out of control and atleast with mays hes undercontrol and wont dribble the ball off his own food walking up the court (Caugh Javi). degand can give more mins than mays but hes a quick scorer that tends to look to himself when things arnt open which is nice but sometimes he forgets to distribute the ball

^ I missed it where do you buy the kool aid and the rose colored glasses. “Now we have turned the corner?” “Sid is coaching his ass off?”
“The next game will tell all.” In other words if my aunt had b___s she would be my uncle. Now the same group a week ago were saying ben, courtney and brandon should not play, now they say they must play.
We are not even close to the tunnel let alone seeing a light at the end of the tunnel.

    Interview from Bloggers at WolfpackHoops:

WolfpackHoops:You’ve told us in the past that you and Lorenzo Brown were God-Brothers. How did this come about?

Harrow: Lorenzo and I met playing basketball when we were 8 years old. We’ve been attached and been best friends ever since. We would play ball and hang out together all the time. We grew up playing AAU together, 3-on-3 tournaments, and pick-up ball at the YMCA and Boys and Girls Club as well. His mom pursued my mom about being Lorenzo’s God-parents and it sounded like a good idea for both families.”

    That’s really cool… also

“WolfpackHoops: Do you and Lorenzo ever sit around and talk about what NC State’s backcourt might look like in the future with the two of you at the helm?

Harrow: We always say it is going to be crazy. We’re both pretty good and we play so well together that we think that we will be able to make the team a lot better. We talk about coming in together and leading State to a championship.”

Can’t thank wolfpackhoops enough for getting these great interviews for us to read and get excited about.

good convro VTpackfan. That is very interesting and exciting stuff. i do think harrow will need to put on weight before he can really do damage but ive heard he is lightning quick. My friend was at the GT game and ran into harrow on the way out and talked to him for a few mins said he was extremly nice and my friend even said something to the effect of hope you can bring a championship when you get here and his response was thats the reason im coming here.

  19. blackdom 01/22/2009 at 1:49 PM #

Well I will just hang out some more here. Been a great week for our country and would rather dwell on the positive for a little bit more.
so wolfpack hoops will wait till a bit before addin my 2 cents.

The Brown/Harrow thing kind of excites me. When was the last time we had two guards that really worked well together like that? It’s been ages.

  21. truewolfpackfan84 01/22/2009 at 3:17 PM #

Leslie does he come in next year or the year after that? i have heard both

  22. pakfanistan 01/22/2009 at 3:21 PM #

    Leslie is 2010.

I think Harrow, Brown, Wood, Howell and Leslie on the court at the same time is going to be controlled chaos.

  23. truewolfpackfan84 01/22/2009 at 3:33 PM #

So clear this up for me Lo Brown, Scott Wood, Richard Howell those 3 come in next right ? and then the next year CJ Leslie and Ryan Harrow come in is that correct ?

Also is there any update at all on the status of John Wall?

  24. happypackdad 01/22/2009 at 4:06 PM #

    Wall won’t sign until April

  25. truewolfpackfan84 01/22/2009 at 6:16 PM #
