Costner Will Not Return for 2009-10

costnerjpg I have made reference to this several times in comments, but I finally have a link to back up what I’ve heard from multiple sources:

NB: How many years are you planning on staying in college?
BC: This is my fourth year, so it’s probably my last year.

NB: Aren’t you a redshirt junior?
BC: Yeah, I am, but I’m graduating early, so I don’t really want to stay too far back.

NB: You don’t plan on doing a grad school year and playing your senior season [of eligibility]?
BC: No.

I don’t know anything about this particular website, but it’s 100% consistent with what we have heard all year. So, when you project the Wolfpack roster for next season, assume we will need to replace all of Costner’s offensive contributions (in addition to that of Fells and McCauley). That will be a significant challenge for the 2009-10 Wolfpack.

Costner is the enigma that replaced one of my personal favorite enigmas…Marcus Melvin. Their game is very comparable. I wish him the best down the road and hope that he continues to play with as much enigmatic energy as I have seen from him this year for the rest of this season.

I wish he had more fire and or leadership quota, but he’s not made that way. No knock.

Brandon has a good shot at creeping into late 1st round pick.

Last mock draft I saw had him 4th or 5th pick in the 2nd round

Hey, at least we don’t have to replace his attitude (sulking, etc.)!

I’m a Brandon Costner fan. Still I don’t think he’s got an NBA game. Maybe he doesn’t care. Maybe he just wants to go play in Europe and make more money than most of the rest of us do for dragging our asses into an office every morning. There’s no shame in that.

I think the guy gets a bad rap. Did you see his face when he fouled out the other night? He was pissed. He wanted to be in there. One of these nights he’ll score 30 points and hit the game winner and there will be people on here ripping him anyway.

Hope everyone is watching VT/Clemson. Great game.

Bob Knight is an AWFUL color man.

I really like Brandon’s game, remeber that ACC tourney run he was the man. It really sucked that last year turned out the way it did because they had so much talent. JJ is getting big minutes now for the Cavs. So you had to play the guy.

We’ve got a lot of b-ball yet to be played so I wouldn’t count anyone out yet. I’ve read where BC might want to come back and play for a national championship. I hope we get in the Tarholes A$$es!!

    GO Pack!!

Isn’t there some rule that a player who graduates with eligibility remaining can transfer without having to sit out a year? If so, that’s probably Costner’s only shot at a title, though I think we’d have a solid team (8-9 wins in ACC play) with him on it next year, if he changed his mind and came back. Without him, not quite so strong.

CStanley ^”No reason Sid won’t be able to recruit now” That is profound

  10. turnoffthetv 01/29/2009 at 10:03 PM #

Im kind of torn by this but one thing is for sure all the true “HERBIVORES” of any value would be gone. In fact I dont think there would be many discussions about “Well he was recruited for that other guys SYSTEM and STUFF, Yada, Yada!!!””He’s got mental issues” DUH!! CHEMISTRY BULL!!!!

No blame on that BULLS**T anymore. And for that I would say GOOD RIDDANCE. Good Luck Brandon and play with some purpose the rest of your games here at NCSU. Please break it off in the HOLES A$$ this Saturday like you did back in the day 2 short years ago in Raleigh.

“Bob Knight is an AWFUL color man.”

Gotta disagree w/ you here a bit, BJD … I don’t think he’s that bad … I like when he breaks down plays and such … to each their own 😉

Some comeback and win for Clemson … Maybe a season defining type win

  13. wufpup76 01/29/2009 at 10:42 PM #

I’m watching the Arkansas / Alabama game and just heard from Brad Nessler that he and Jimmy Dykes will be on the mic’s for Saturday’s game against the Holes at 3:30 pm – just like they were in 2007

Maybe some of the magic of that day can be recaptured this Saturday …

  14. BJD95 01/29/2009 at 11:27 PM #

Knight actually said “down 3, the key here is for VT to get a shot.”. I shit you not, that was his analysis.

  15. TheCOWDOG 01/29/2009 at 11:45 PM #

He is what he once detested BJ…media. He feels included, and we’ll hear more inane sh8t out of his egotistical grill to come.

No reason to disown him. Less of course he used to work for you.

    apparently, neither will Gary Williams.

Good luck to BC on and off the courts. I for one have always thought he brought it enuff of the time-not every one can be a Bill Russell puke in the head and go out pshyco.

Last year he tweaked the knee pushing it to the limit trying to make an elite American roster (under 21 worlds?). He got cut last didn’t go and didn’t stay and peak shape in the offseason- it was the root cause of everything negative that happened on the court last year- not an offense going in a different direction, not the fuzzy math about someone say take half the shots= half production.

Thats the only sad part of his legacy to me. He took no responsibility for any of the hard times and he and his father probably have mis judged just how damaging his draft prospect looks after being revealed as someone failed to stay in shape after an injury. Shawn Mays anyone?

    Seat,
Can you translate that post into English? It does not even make sense.

As for BC, he was on the bench for the end of both of our ACC victories. Coincidence?

  19. Wulfpack 01/30/2009 at 8:22 AM #

Wolfpack fans amaze me sometimes. “Good riddance” to arguably our best player the last three years, a guy who has persevered through a barage of criticism during this difficult transition period? No, he hasn’t been perfect, but neither has anyone else for that matter, and that goes for the coaching staff as well. He’s been our best player, period. He’s getting a college degree from our beloved institution and he’ll be making good money in Europe. What’s the big deal? Thank you for your service, Mr. Costner. I hope that your NCSU career can end on a high note.

As for the program’s future, I really hope the pieces come together. Replacing Costner, Fells and McCauley is going to be a load. It looks as if our backcourt may be coming along, but now we’re going to have a huge hole in the frontcourt. Smith is going to have to step it up big-time and so far I’d say he has.

  20. SEAT.5.F.2 01/30/2009 at 8:38 AM #

    ok Rick.

Seat; noun: any support where you can sit (especially the part of a chair or bench etc. on which you sit) (“He dusted off the seat before sitting down”)

    5; number. F; alphabet letter 2; number.

Get through that and ignore te rest. Help any?

  21. blackdom 01/30/2009 at 8:52 AM #

As bad as everyone thought BC,Ben and Fell’s are or were they are the sole reason we have 2 league wins now.
It will be another disgrace here next year once again .

  22. Rochester 01/30/2009 at 8:52 AM #

He scored 22 and 21 points in each of our ACC victories. Coincidence?

I have to give Brandon a lot of credit for coming back this year to play hard and much better than he did last year. The freshman star who has a sophomore slump/crash and returns to form is a LT 50% proposition. More frequently than not these guys just fade away.

His NBA career will depend on how well he can shoot the NBA three and how well he is able to defend. I think his comment in the interview about being a ‘tweener is going to be more of a challenge for him defensively than offensively. I’m not sure if he can bulk up enough to be an effective NBA 4 and I don’t think he currently has enough quickness to do anything but wave at most NBA small forwards as they go by.

  24. VaWolf82 01/30/2009 at 9:31 AM #

One thing that I’ve noticed about State fans is that no matter how bad the team obviously is, they search for a singular “problem” to explain everything. If this one “problem” was fixed, then the team would be dramatically improved. For some people, BC has become the “problem”.

BC is a good, but not great player playing on teams that are not very good. If he played on better teams, then he could be put into positions that capitalized on his strengths and minimized his weaknesses. As it is, he has to log major minutes, even when the match-up puts him (and the team) at a disadvantage.

Good luck Brandon on your future endeavors!

^ On the bench? He fouled out and there would have been no ot without him as well.
