redfred2-I suppose anyone of the three should be able to step up into a leadership role. I’m more leaning on the whole rotation thing killing us then anything. As for leadership, I do believe it’s lacking and without any good reason. Your right, BC, Mac and Fells have had plenty of time to shine as a leader if they should so please.

I like the sound of TheCOWDOG! It sound imposing, prominent and down right dangerous! Our wolfpack needs you TheCOWDOG.

  3. TheCOWDOG 01/10/2009 at 8:28 PM #

P44, You’re right about defensive pressure or our lack of. We don’t press or trap because we can’t. Too f’ing slow.

That and the uncoachables could never grasp the concepts of where to intercept the ball handler and when to drop back into a passing lane.

I have the anwser for the loss at clemson= YOU PLAY BAD YOU LOSE!

    THAT SIMPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. pack44fan 01/10/2009 at 8:40 PM #

COWDOG, you are right we are slow. I remember when V coached, with one particular team, he would put Brian Howard at Center with 4 other of his quickest players and he would press and trap on defense to just change pace. We might not be able to press but we could change up for short periods on defense (1/2 court zone trap) just to give the other teams something to think about. Right now, we do the same thing every time down.

  6. BSIE80 01/10/2009 at 8:42 PM #

    My suggestions:
I would like to see JT or CJ Williams get some time, forget horner he has no game and is too slow to play defense. Sit him and Javier and only use them for mop up duty.
Smith needs playing time, we need to go big and have Smith cover the 3 on defense or play zone. Put fells at the 2 and tell him he needs to get his game in gear -layups are good we dont need a dunk.
Let Ben shoot jump shots from 15-17 feet, he needs to develop this range to open up the low post for others, even if he shoots 33%.
    Go with 8 man rotation
    PG Degand sub with Mays
    SG Fells sub with Ferg
SF Smith sub with JT or CJ
    PF Costner
    C Ben

Play Costner and Ben 40 minutes

  7. TheCOWDOG 01/10/2009 at 8:54 PM #

Damn straight ‘GLOW I’m feelin it. Only 15 lbs. over playin’ weight.

P44, I’m all for the change up and you again are correct by noting get the quick guys in there for the change up. In fact, it kinda goes in line with my reduced roles theory for Costner, McCauley and Fells. Fells would be part of this on brick headedness not speed.

Did you see what happened today when we actually did attempt to trap
in a half court situation? Fells came out as 2nd man to trap one of the white boys by State’s bench and the kid did a little drop step and took the baseline to the rack.

  8. BSIE80 01/10/2009 at 9:05 PM #

    Ok, I’m flexible!
    Let’s play small ball
    PG Mays
    SG Degand
    SF CJ
    PF JT
    C Smith

All of these guys are somewhat athletic, so we can trap & press, etc.
Javier can be the 6th man and Ferg can be the 4th quarter 3 pt specialist…
    Let’s play with 7.

Costner/Fells/Ben/Horner can cheer from the bench, focus on classes/graduating!

We can go 5-11 this way also.

  9. pack44fan 01/10/2009 at 9:07 PM #

Yeah, COWDOG, I saw that situation with Fells. I personally believe it is execution as much as anything. I remember back in the day, Carolina did a whole lot of trapping with alot of slow players and they were still pretty successful. It goes back to doing the little things and fundamentals. More than anything, I want to see some agression on both ends. To heck with this timid stuff. It ain’t working.

  10. BJD95 01/10/2009 at 10:10 PM #

Fells should NEVER play SG again. Mays should back up both guards, Smith should back up both lowpost players. Use a medley to back up Fells at SF, based on how practice shakes out. There’s your 8-man rotation.

  11. BJD95 01/10/2009 at 10:16 PM #

Hey, how about those bed-shitting Panthers! This sports day is ending as well as it started, for sure.

  12. TheCOWDOG 01/10/2009 at 10:30 PM #

BJ, barring injury, I’d be more surprised to see Fells at off guard than I am at the ass whooping that Arizona is putting on Carolina right now.

  13. pack44fan 01/10/2009 at 10:34 PM #

Yeah, Carolina has the deer in the headlights look. Saw that earlier in the day at Clemson.

  14. choppack1 01/10/2009 at 10:48 PM #

Yes – this is an awful sports day. Hopefully, Philip can salvage it for us tomorrow.

I don’t know what folks were expecting. To be honest, we faired OK. TO’s and substitution patterns can be corrected – of course, they’ve been correctable for 3 years.

I am seeing some good things though. We rebounded pretty well today. Degand is coming around, and Mays looks like he can be a solid job. Trev did an excellent job on Ogelsby – though there’s no excuse to be beaten by a kid who can just shoot the 3.

As for the attacks on Costner, McCauley and Fells – we probably shouldn’t go there – they’re the only double figure scorers we have (and they do the best job on the boards)…and when a team doesn’t break 60, well, that’s kind of scary isn’t it?

if guard play was going to be such a problem for such a long time, why not recruit in Europe and get Atsur’s brother or something. Don’t they have 6’10 guys growing on tree that can dribble like Tim Hardaway? Get a ticket, grab a clipboard, grab a {Spanish,French,German,Yiddish} to English dictionary, and start hanging out in some gyms. Don’t tell me their aren’t talented kids in Europe that would love a free ride to study in an American University.

    …..or maybe I’m simplifying things a bit.

If the fan base was split before, I think right now its split between those that are blaming Sid’s inexperience and those that are blaming Herb’s leftover players.

And somebody take Jake Delhomme out of the game, for god’s sake.

  17. wesley 01/10/2009 at 11:08 PM #

Lets go Chargers… please Philip give me something to cheer about, I have almost forgot the feeling after todays losses. Canes lose in Boston, whats new? They cant string together enough wins to make any ground on the Caps. The Pack are just the same old Pack… turnovers. And what the heck with Jake? Id be glad to see him traded or let go after this season.

“Hey, how about those bed-shitting Panthers! This sports day is ending as well as it started, for sure.”

Talk about your all time sh*t days if you’re a Pack and Panthers fan as I am 🙁

    Total bummer

Re: Our big guys – It’s just my opinion, but all of our big guys have played hard all year, including today … I thought McCauley was not aggressive enough on the offensive end, always looking to pass – but, he did have 9 or 10 rebounds including several offensive boards

Smith got no time for whatever reason, and say what you want to about Brandon but I haven’t seen him loaf this season, including today … He had an off day offensively to be sure, but he was one of the few guys who would actually try to drive the ball to the basket at least once in a while

Obviously the first half was a killer, shooting only 21%, and the turnovers … the turnovers … the turnovers

Other than that, I think the most egregious mistake was subbing out 3 guys when we had made that surge to begin the second half … Also, at this point it’s hard to justify Javi getting time over Mays

Got to give Clemson credit, they exploited our main weakness … TURNOVERS!!!

  19. TheCOWDOG 01/10/2009 at 11:14 PM #

Sorry Chop, I don’t think that I’m known as much of a cheap shot artist. ( not insinuating that you called me one…just checkin’ myself ) Except in the case of alot of things I’ve said about Towe, I’ve been pretty fair.

But facts is facts bra’, the trio aren’t leaders, have proven to pout when it isn’t goin’ their way ( Fells excluded from that ) and are collectively leading this team in costly turnovers. The fact that they are in low double figures doesn’t sway me to be more accomodating.

  20. BJD95 01/10/2009 at 11:36 PM #

I was pissed when Flacco picked up 7 yards on his last play. I really wanted to see Steven Hauschka nail the winning FG.

  21. wufpup76 01/10/2009 at 11:48 PM #

^Yeah, I was hoping to see Hauschka trot out there … I really dislike the Ravens though

    GOOOO CHARGERS!!!!

And I’m pretty sure I’ll be cheering for the Cardinals next week … If they were playing anyone other than the Panthers tonight I probably would’ve been cheering for them … Talk about a franchise that could use something to feel good about success wise

  22. Trip 01/11/2009 at 12:06 AM #

I watched the entire game and for some reason the only plays I can remember are fells screwups. The full court press pass that went off the goal somehow and bounced into a tiger’s paws… the dunk that missed… the attempted defensive rebound that he tipped in for a bucket for the other team… the failed trap that the white boy made him pay for. The lazy passes that led to turnovers, getting the ball stripped away when he wasn’t even dribbling…

Ugh. At least Fergy played outstanding defense on Oglsby, kid only managed to release one three-pointer and it didn’t go in. Considering he launches 12 per 40 minutes typically, we’ll take it.

Mays is going to be good for us, he wasn’t scared to drive to the hoop even though Booker blocked his shit twice in a row. His numbers show that he is fairly aggressive offensively… way more than our other point guards.

2-7 FG, 2-3 3P 2-2 FT 1 assist and NO turnovers in 11 minutes. He should have made 2 more of those goals if a streaking Booker didn’t fly in to knock it into the stands. I have no idea how he managed to consistently block ONLY the ball and miss the players hand for no foul. Mays has a good free throw shooting motion and outside shot as well. He’s made 100% of his free throws this year, I think 18-18 FT and shooting 6/10 from the three. His high school stats show he was shooting 85% from the charity stripe and 45% from the three. I think he should have the green light to launch a 3 whenever he feels like it.

By way of comparison, in 25 minutes Farnold only attempted 3 shots. I have no doubt that Degand is better for defense, but right now he just isn’t looking for his own shot enough.

  23. PAJ 01/11/2009 at 12:10 AM #

Our “big 3” just aren’t that skilled. And they have not shown much growth or development in their respective games since they came to college.

Fells is probably the worst ball handling / passing 2/3 man I’ve ever seen. Zero Bball IQ.

McCauley has never developed a reliable jumper or any face up moves. You’d think he’d have worked on becoming a threat facing the basket from 15 feet at some point in a 4 year career. Does he do anything in the offseason to improve his game?

Costner still has no ability to work to his right, and he cannot finish or shoot a baby hook with his right hand. That makes him too easy to defend. When teams take away his left hand / left side of the lane, he’s a below the rim player of average athletic ability. Like Ben, why hasn’t he developed more game by now?

They may be our best players, but they are not what we need to get where we want to be.

I found a cool Count Basie CD today that I didn’t know about. Live at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1977 for $5.00. Found a good copy of “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” for a dime.

    So…ya know…there IS that.

Instead of listening to the Panthers’ second half bed-shitting, pants-wetting, face-planting performance, I listened to “Exile On Main Street.”

My world has gotten very small.

I really would like to think that this team will improve somehow over the season. Like football, everyone was doubting them at the beginning of the season and they ended up finishing really strong. Im trying to stay positive but this is getting ruff. With that being said, after watching todays game i place as much blame on the coaching as i do the players. We looked horrible. Clemson didn’t even play well and somehow we managed to play worse than them. It seemed at times our guards were trying to dribble a concrete block. All i have to say is that the BB team better get prepared for the full court pressure by all opponents they face. Thats what seems to give us the most trouble and if they can’t improve with that then they are in for a long year…

^PAJ..i completely agree about the mccauley statement…

what a shitty day for sports….
