As a good friend often says to me after these games, “come back in, off the ledge.” I guess I’m in the minority, but I don’t see this game as a sign of total doom.

    1. We weren’t supposed to win this game anyway. We lost by 12, which is sad, but not unexpected.

    2. We didn’t quit. (I may be shaky on this, but by my memory we flat out gave up at Clemson last year when we got down.)

    3. We had some lapses, but overall we played pretty good defense. Ferguson pretty well shut down Terrance Oglesby. We couldn’t stop their all-ACC forward/center (can’t say his name because for some reason every post that I’ve mentioned his name has gotten stuck waiting for moderation, as if it were a bad word, which maybe it is).

    4. We really can’t play much worse than we did on offense today, at least for about 30 minutes of this game.

    5. Ferguson was in his first game back and didn’t have his shooting stroke. He did a lot of other things well, however.

    6. Fells, for as many boneheaded, idiotic plays as he made, also had some big rebounds, showing that he’s physically close to back. Mentally, he’s all the way back, but that bar is awful low.

    7. Sid might finally have realized Javi sucks and he let Mays play a lot of the second half.

    8. We won 4 conference games last year and we’ve got a better team this year.

    Mays>>>>>>>>>>>Javi

Redfred2, I agree that I would like to see more fire and anger coming from the coaching staff, but I think Sid is very cognizant not to stir up players shutting down like last season. Sid wants to maintain what confidence he has in this team. We can debate the merits of that strategy all day, but I think it’s important he and the staff keep cool, and not try to damage what fragile psyches some of the players have (especially at the guard position, which was easy to see in Degand when he was talking to Strickland on the bench). Also, did anyone notice our exalted AD in the stands behind Sid? I was surprised he knew which state Clemson was in, much less how to find the coliseum.

I missed the entire first half, but I saw a focused team with a good plan come out after the half. THEN, we see one dumb play, then another, and another, another…

It would be a tall order, but I don’t know if anyone can coach away lazy, listless, and stupid, all at the same time.

I love little Javi, and chances are he’ll contribute somehow this season

“Javi, get us some water. Javi, I need a towel. Javi, massage this cramp in my leg. Javi, transfer to another school and free up a scholarship.”

There’s how he’s going to contribute.

    Did I miss something?

I know Smith and Mays arn’t great yet, but does anybody know why they play so little??? I really hope somebody will ask Sid that after the game.

Ferg played great defense on their guard. Other than that, it was brutal to watch. Missed layups have nothing to do with conditioning.

Although it is so hard to watch the pack struggle so much. I will continue to support Sid through the end of next year.

com state10 I think you are right one more year then its all his guys

  8. DT44 01/10/2009 at 2:17 PM #

come on Badger, it’s disingenuous to pretend your post wasn’t referencing the refs…

  9. sf59 01/10/2009 at 2:18 PM #

-the only guys that gave it a go consistently all day with enthusiasm and brains were ferg and mays. maybe these 2 guys are not the most athletic but at least they are not idiots and play good position D

-maybe there is room a georgia state for javi… thats all i really wanna say

-the backbone of the team (Fells, BC, Ben) got hit in the mouth and collapsed like a card table. When BC and Ben disapear we should lose by 40. They did not get enough touches and that falls on the poor play or FD and javi at PG

-fells and degand may have scored some points, but they cost us in TOs and by getting out of position on D all game. these guys do not have it upstairs to play efficiently in the ACC

-i figured we would lose by more. we never could really handle the pressure as expected… but our D was a bitt better than i anticipated

    -crossing fingers for NIT

Leonard Hamilton seems to have some horses.

  11. eas 01/10/2009 at 2:24 PM #

Plain and simple….we suck. Year #3 and nothing has changed. We all want Sid to do well but some improvement is expected each year and it’s not there. We continue to be the worst ball handling and decision making team in the league (if not all of division 1). Really, how can this not improve at all in 3 years? We have to just stick with Mays (even with his mistakes) and let him get better. Javi is horrible and Degand isn’t much better. Surely someone on entire campus can dribble the ball well.

It’s a good thing Clemson didn’t play very well today.

Don’t know if anyone is watching Duke-FSU, but one of FSU’s big guys and that little b*tch Paulus get tied up w/ the ball

Neither will let go of the ball, and you know how much of an instigator Paulus is … Naturally, the ref blows his whistle and comes running in to break it up and his first action is to SCREAM AT THE FSU PLAYER AND STARE HIM DOWN

Nevermind that that little sh*t had anything to do w/ it, it was all about taking the FSU guy to task for daring to compete as hard as DUKE

    Unbelievable

That, Mike Patrick, is why people HATE your beloved Dukies

“come on Badger, it’s disingenuous to pretend your post wasn’t referencing the refs…”

If that indeed is the case, it would be disingenuous for anyone critical of that post to intimate it was for any reason but to convey a holier-than-thou attitude.

It was an observation. If my reaction fails because the flask exploded, I am certainly not going to omit the fact that my reagents were uncharacteristically wet.

I’d point out when we got into the bonus and whether we were able to capitalize regardless of score.

This is a BB team that comes out looking as if they are at the mercy of anything/anybody but themselves. They have the look of a victim instead of an aggressor who’s prepared to control it’s own destiny.

It’s definitely not a good thing, but it’s been happening around here for years. And by that, I mean more than just three.

  15. wolfpack74ms 01/10/2009 at 2:43 PM #

14 points at half, he plays Harris who is Division 2 talent at best, then he tries to copy Dean Smith with a pitiful 2nd 5. Where are all you guys that believed Sid was the 2nd coming? Yes, last place in the ACC seems probable.

  16. Daily Update 01/10/2009 at 2:47 PM #

This is the first season as an NC State fan that I am completely numb to NC State basketball. I had no excitement about the season. I have no hope of anything positive happening until at least 2012. I do expect us to win no more than 5 ACC games. And I expect us to look bad doing it too.

I used to drive 3 hours round trip to watch our players in the Chavis League…sometimes twice a week. Now I barely make an effort to use my season ticket and I live 5 minutes from the arena.

Lee Fowler killed NC State basketball for me.

“Costner may be back next season because with the long season and number of games in an NBA/Euro seasons, I’m not so certain that any franchise can afford the number of shoes he would go through dragging his feet up and down the court.”

now thats funny… and very true

  18. PoppaJohn 01/10/2009 at 2:52 PM #

I had a conflict so missed this one. Just read the SI write up on it. 17 points in the first half!
17 points in the first half!
    Costner 3 of 9????
    McCauley 1 of 3???
    Leading scorer had 10????
    9 turnovers by the guards
    CU had 12 steals!

    Horrible!

Why oh why do I continue to care????

  19. wufpup76 01/10/2009 at 2:58 PM #

Here’s another ACC high scoring affair:

Duke 19 – FSU 14 at the half

    That’s not a football score!

Defense is pretty good in the ACC so far this season (except for the Holes … he he he – gotta get the jokes in while you can … I know, I know, they’ll beat us by 8,000 or whatever – but still)

  20. PoppaJohn 01/10/2009 at 3:10 PM #

Hey, we scored 17 at the half, maybe we can beat FSU!

  21. Rochester 01/10/2009 at 3:23 PM #

I’ve thought for years that we have played like dung in noon starts. Not that that was our only problem today, but there’s something about the early start that seems to catch us offguard.

  22. redfred2 01/10/2009 at 3:33 PM #

    THAT’S IT!!!

It’s just that simple, no more noon games and we’re undefeated for, well, at least the next couple days anyway.

  23. JeremyH 01/10/2009 at 3:37 PM #

I’m glad I missed the opportunity to listen to or watch this game by spending 5 hours in a church for pre-maritial counseling (pre canna). wooh… what?

  24. Gene 01/10/2009 at 3:54 PM #

The baffling thing is the whole sale substitution half way through a half. It starts with a trickle, Smith in for McCauley, and before you know it we have five subs in the game.

Our bench isn’t good enough to play all five in at the same time. Smith’s the only offensive option and we generally lost games at this juncture.

But Sid found something he likes and he’s going to stubbornly go with it, no matter how many games we lose because of it.

  25. JeremyH 01/10/2009 at 4:08 PM #

it sucks that we get the backcourt help (Brown & Wood) in the same year we lose our frontcourt (McCauley & probably Costner). I hope that Smith and Howell can fill that void. You guys are totally right about 2010 being the point where rebuilding reaches a certain point. No way we can win with 18 turnovers. And Noah I hope you are wrong about the other things.
