Andrew Jones: Russell Wilson Should Drop Football

Columnist Andrew Jones is of the opinion that it is in Freshman All-American QB Russell Wilson’s best interests to drop football and concentrate on baseball exclusively:

He is just 5-foot-10, and with three football injuries on his 2008 resume, focusing just on baseball might be a wise decision for his future. Practice begins in a few weeks, and while Wilson won’t be ready immediately – NCSU officials say it all depends on the early healing process as to when he’ll be ready, so there’s no official time table – he will eventually factor in State’s plans.

A decision to walk away from football will devastate many Wolfpack fans, as the program has struggled to find a competent quarterback since Philip Rivers left in 2003. But it’s probably the best thing for Wilson and his family, and that is what matters most.

I’m sure that there are a lot of fans of other ACC teams that would be completely happy for Russell Wilson to focus exclusively on baseball and not to spend next season giving their favorite team’s defense a fit.  The scenario that Jones discusses has certainly made its way around the rumor mill since the end of the regular season, but no concrete decision and no other items seem to indicate that Wilson plans to hang his football cleats up this spring or anytime soon.  Conventional wisdom is that Wilson enjoys playing both sports; but conventional wisdom also is that Russell is a highly mature and intelligent young man who generally makes fantastic decisions.

One thing is for certain – with a healthy Russell Wilson under center and Mike Glennon developing at a nice pace, the Wolfpack offense is a threat to any team on the schedule. If Wilson does play football next year and remains healthy the Wolfpack has a legitimate shot to compete for an ACC Championship and resulting BCS Bowl berth next year.

Who was the last guy to play all three major sports? Dave Winfield?

  2. Afterglow 01/08/2009 at 9:44 PM #

Dave Winfield played both basketball and baseball at Uninversity of Minnesota, ya… go Gophers. He didn’t play college football but was selected in the 17th round of the NFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings. Definitely 136 toothpicks.

That would be an interesting NC State question about who was the last to play 3 major sports! I can think of lots of two sports athletes, but not 3 and I can go back a lot further than most of you guys. That may go to the 50’s or earlier cause none come to mind from the 60’s on.

what we need is for owen spencer to somehow cause his hands to ooze super-glue

Doug Flutie at 5’10” was also too small to play quarterback professionally according to many “experts.”

Well, that was better than seeing Ohio State getting blown out again … I guess

I’d be willing to bet that if Tim Tebow played at NC State he would do one of the following:

    1. Give State fans legitimate tital hopes, but suffer a career-ending injury and cause the collapse of the program

    2. Be told by all the sports analysts that now worship him to give up football for his volunteer work

    OR…

    3. Suck

Has Russell Wilson or his family said anything about Russell playing professional baseball? All I’ve heard is that he wants to play both sports in college. Would not surprise me if RW and his family have only passing interest in Russell spending 10 years of his life playing professional baseball.

There is a lot more potential for that young man in life than professional baseball. Let’s have him complete his college education at NCSU, play both football and baseball while he’s here doing it. I’ve had worse ideas on this list. 😉

Clearly, Russell Wilson needs to give up college so he can dedicate his time to fighting crime. And raising alpacas. It’s a new hit tv show this fall on NBC…

Speaking of three-sport guys…Deion Sanders was asked about this once back when he was playing with the Falcons and Braves. He was a pretty good basketball player in high school (as you can imagine) and he said that he had been VERY interested in playing basketball in college. One of the people interviewing him said, “That wouldn’t have left much time for class, would it?” Deion laughed and said, “That was never really a problem.”

They all had a nice chuckle over it. As I recall, Sanders ultimately got suspended for what would have been his final bowl game at Florida State after it turned out that he hadn’t attended a single a class the entire year. Not one. That’s some funny stuff, isn’t it, Neon?

“Bobby Frazier and Tyler Hopsborough should give up basketball because of injuries. Both are supposed to be incredible Olympic Diving stars”

The only future diving stars in the ACC lace ’em up for 8 conference home games in Cameron… 🙂

But really… until the spring plays out, it is difficult to say what baseball holds for Russell. The projections were high out of high school, but sporadic time last season leaves you currently looking at a Rafael Belliard type– with the bat, PERHAPS the glove. Not a ringing endorsement.

Ideally, Russell would do well this season and work his way into a wood bat summer league. But, coming off of injury, and then going into spring football practice to compete with Glennon, well… you can see where this is going. Do you split focus– because it isn’t two separate seasons; spring football overlaps– or do you concentrate on one for a career.

By all accounts, Russell is a stand up individual, not a problem in the classroom, and a splendid athelete. And, by all accounts, he has a good core of family advisors about him. I hope TOB and EA are working closely together to help Russell excel in both, and have the best opportunities– otherwise, there will inevitably be a decision to make. The most unfortunate thing is the injury vs. Rutgers; otherwise, he could have hit the opening of baseball running and had the chance to put up some numbers worthy of a summer league slot. The good thing is, if after the injury Russell comes back and puts up summer-worthy numbers, he won’t need to play in that league. His ‘point’ will have already been made with the scouts.

“Of course, guess what Andy boy – w/ baseball’s aluminum bats – the same thing can happen in baseball, and IMHO, college baseball is one awful disaster away from doing away w/ those weapons.”

Boy do I agree with that statement. As the father of a son playing college baseball, I hated it in HS when he pitched. Since his college coaches like him in the lineup and field, I don’t have quite as much to worry about and certainly don’t miss the strain when he pitched but still worry about the other pitchers as a couple on his team have been hit (not seriously) by batted balls.

It certainly was more fun during this past summer when they played with wooden bats – although the wooden bats do tip the scales in favor of the pitcher.

As for Wilson, everyone should just leave him alone and let him make up his mind.

  13. Dr. BadgerPack 01/09/2009 at 8:09 AM #

The current aluminum bats have the same ball return velocities as wooden bats; and are probably safer than those pesky maple bats that shatter if you look at them funny.

Scales are tipped to the pitcher now simply because of a larger viable hitting area, and the inability to effectively saw off (jam) a hitter.

  14. PackBacker001 01/09/2009 at 8:28 AM #

“The current aluminum bats have the same ball return velocities as wooden bats”

Yes, but there’s a catch. While a wooden bat and an aluminum bat swung at the same speed will have roughly the same return velocity, the aluminum bat will have a lower moment of inertia. This is because the center of mass is closer to the batter (lower on the bat) as the metal bat is hollow. The effect of this is that batters can swing an aluminum bat faster than a wooden bat, thereby increasing the average speed that the ball comes off the bat.

This being said, when it comes to baseball I won’t pretend to know anywhere near as much as you, Dr. BadgerPack. I just wanted to expand on your post a bit.

Come on people, Rusty Larue played and started for Wake in Football, Basketball, and Baseball.

I stand to be corrected, but I believe he showed up and scored in the javelin one year at the conference track meet.

PackBacker001- You are 100% correct. But don’t forget to factor in that your high school/college kids using these bats are nowhere near as developed or strong as your average toothpick wielding professional. 🙂

Give Ryan Howard an aluminum bat… and someone’s getting hurt.

Andrew Jones is a donkey!! typical UNC punk with opinions beyond his intellect. He’s forever writing about what NCSU should or should not do while heaping praise on ol’ Butch. How about this head line “BMFD hands out more scollies than available”. Don’t you think that’s more news worthy than Russle Wilsons’ future in football?
This is the kind of reporting that also says Herb was unappriciated at NCSU and was run off by fans with unrealistic goals or views. Well if my team was whipping his ass at every turn i would say the same. It’s the old don’t throw me in the briar patch thing.
ACC teams and especially UNC don’t want State to a ascend to it’s former glories. The time before the same type journalist desimated a basketball program with lies from a former trainer. State has yet to recover from the NEWS and OBSERVER running Jimmy V out of town. Since that time UNC and DUKE have pretty much owned ACC basketball. But before then there was no DUKE it was NCSU and UNC the biggest rilvalry in college sports.
So why not start early on the football program? It should be plain to anyone who’s watched the last two years what teams in the next couple of year will be at the top of their divisions. TOB and his teams have shown UNC fans the future of what’s in store for them by winning the last two games against them. One by a small margin and one by a bunch of points that could have been many more. The last game with a team according to the media, including Andrew Jones was inferior to BMFD’s taleted squad. Who would you say was the biggest factor in that game? Russell Wilson? So if I was a UNC fan/alum who would I want playing against my team next year? Russell Wilson voted best of the best in the ACC or and unproven quarteback with not college experience.

It’s articles like this that remind me of one of my favorite sayings:
The main difference between “stupid” and “genius” is that “genius” has limits.

  20. RedTerror29 01/09/2009 at 9:42 AM #

No, Wilson just needs to learn when to slide (in football) next year.

I cannot believe K is whining about not getting attention.
Dick Vitale has it written into his contract that he has to mention Duke 24 times a broadcast.

“I think I heard one of the commentators for the NC STATE/Rutgers game that Wilson had actually thought about playing Basketball as well but that O’Brien said absolutely not.”

Um Russell, if somehow you do decide to hang up that helmet, PLEASE do go over and have a visit with Sidney Lowe. I’m almost certain that he’d be willing to sit down and have a chat with you.

    redfred,
What makes you think Sid would be interested in a point guard who had an assist to turnover ratio of 17 to 1? OMG I just starting thinking of our basketball team with RW running the show. “Listen up Cos, Mac, and the rest of you. This turnover shit has got to stop, now. And if you are too tired to play defense, sit your ass down.”
