Wolfpack’s Bowl Picture Becoming More Clear (Updated 11:35am)

NC State’s bowl chances now appear to rest on the University and the ACC’s ability to secure an at-large bid.

It seems apparent now that the NCAA and the ACC are standing firm by not allowing a 6-6 NC State team take one of the 9 bowl bids affiliated with the ACC. Over the past 2 days, the order at the top of the ACC bowl lineup has been confirmed exactly as we projected on Tuesday and today the evolution continues as the order near the bottom of the conference is also taking shape.

The key variable in the second half of the conference’s pecking order continues to be the Emerald Bowl’s preference for Miami’s national reputation for televison ratings.

The primary questions that currently remain: does NC State get a bowl bid, and if so, where?

What we know:

Orange Bowl: Winner of VT/BC ACC Championship game
Peach Bowl: Ga Tech
Gator Bowl: Clemson
Champs Bowl: FSU
Music City Bowl: Loser of VT/BC Championship game
Meineke Bowl: UNC

What we speculate based on various reports —

Emerald: Miami
This is what we have heard all week and the Emerald Bowl’s executive director pretty much states that they want Miami on the bowl’s website.

Boise: Maryland
It seems Maryland is headed to Boise to play Nevada after the Terps whined their way out of the EagleBank Bowl and after Ball State declined an opportunity to battle Boise in this bowl.

EagleBank Bowl: Wake Forest
Reports today indicate that Navy doesn’t have much choice in waving their rematch clause, thus paving the way for Navy and Wake to meet in the EagleBank Bowl. Another article from Baltimore with updated information.

The president and executive director of the inaugural EagleBank Bowl said last night that a rematch of Navy and Wake Forest is a “strong possibility.”

After conversations yesterday with Navy athletic director Chet Gladchuk, Steve Beck said that he is confident that the no-rematch stipulation will be waived by the Midshipmen.

Q: So, where does that leave NC State?

A: An at-large bid is NC State’s only chance for a bowl. Fortunately, there appears to be a good chance of that occurring.

If Troy beats Arkansas State in the Sun Belt title game, it will free up a spot in the PapaJohn’s bowl, which we think will then select NC State and which we think has been Coach Tom O’Brien’s preference all along. In fact, the “Scarlett Scuttlebutt” is predicting NC State vs Rutgers for the PapaJohn’s Bowl.

If Arkansas State beats Troy – thus giving the Sun Belt a PapaJohn’s – bid then we hope Ohio State gets an at-large BCS bowl. IF that happens, it opens up a slot in the Motor City Bowl in Detroit, and NC State would be strong candidate there.

After these two possibilities a trip to Hawaii or Shreveport for the Independence Bowl are not out of the question.

Our best assumption at this point is that Troy will win the Sun Belt and NC State will land in the PapaJohn’s bowl on Dec. 29th in Birmingham. But, we will keep our eyes and ears open!

Just stay in Atlanta. Four star hotels on priceline are usually less than $100.

  2. RedTerror29 12/04/2008 at 3:34 PM #

I would finally get another chance to visit the Hank Williams museum.

TOB is rightfully more worried about extra practices than the bowl payout — we need to practice more than we need the money.

BYW, in great shape for a new big-time recruit for ’09: DeMarcus Cousins!!!

  4. packalum44 12/04/2008 at 5:09 PM #

Maybe DeMarcus will be at the Papa John’s Bowl Game. If we get him there, he’ll be hooked. Wonder what bowl game will Calipari be taking recruits too???

  5. GAWolf 12/04/2008 at 5:22 PM #

So are we still pulling for Arizona tonight??? Or has that been deemed irrelevant? I can’t keep up with this crap anymore.

  6. Old School Wolf 12/04/2008 at 5:42 PM #

^ I’m with you. earlier in the week we were supposed to pull for rutgers tonight.

  7. travelwolf 12/04/2008 at 5:45 PM #

I know this is a little off-topic, but has anyone noticing the fball recruits we are getting? seems that they are coming from all over the country – even west of the Mississippi. That’s quite a change from the recent past. I have to think that our recent success has had a lot to do with it. For a guy to come to NCSU from NM… Give TOB and Co. a raise! A bowl game would help us tremendously furthering our reputation, esp. if we win it.

  8. TomCat 12/04/2008 at 6:49 PM #

The important thing is securing a bowl, regardless of location. Landmark event for this season and tenure of TOB. Birmingham is maybe the least attractive (all the fans sit on one side of the the massive relic stadium!- as directed by ESPN- like the old Florida wrestling shows). City of Birmingham acts as if they have no clue a bowl game is going on. Cops showed up with paddy wagons and billy clubs and beat up a bunch of fans a couple years back for ‘not walking fast enough on their sidewalk’ in their five points area. Yes, Biringham is a BOWL and that is what’s important. Just be careful how you operate down their! And oh yeah,… it’s the PapaJohns Bowl but they don’t serve pizza. Go figure! Other than that- what matters HAPPENS ON THE FIELD.

Uh, I don’t know if anyone is watching, but Rutgers is either much improved, or Louisville just plain sucks.

  10. choppack1 12/04/2008 at 8:43 PM #

Yep – it’s definitely all about ANY bowl this year. I do like the idea of being able to play in a bowl that isn’t 2 weeks away.

  11. Alpha Wolf 12/04/2008 at 8:44 PM #

^ We would beat either team, IMO.

On NFLN, Rivers is having a pretty good game so far against the Raiders — up 10-0 near the end of the first, with the Chargers driving from their own one down to the Oakland 16 as the quarter comes to and end.

  12. LKNpackfan 12/04/2008 at 8:44 PM #

Anyone else watching the Rutgers/Louisville game? Both look pretty, um, not good. Birmingham (if that’s where we end up) should be a fun trip. I have in-laws there but haven’t actually visited in a while.

We’re keeping the fingers crossed here in Davidson, for both the bowl game and Saturday’s matchup. I’d love to see Davidson take down an ACC team, just not us.

  13. Alpha Wolf 12/04/2008 at 8:46 PM #

^ Yup, I would be happy to go to Birmingham. It’s a lot bigger and a lot nicer town than people who’ve never been there think. Plus a little side trip to Tuscaloosa (about 45 minutes out of town) and you can see a pretty nice college town and an AWESOME football stadium. The Bear Bryant Museum over there is worth the time and the drive.

Rutgers is rolling 35-0. According to http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball
the Motor City Bowl wants a rematch from last year and have Rutgers play Ball State. So that leaves UConn as the Big East rep in Birmingham? Do we have a clause saying we won’t have a rematch and play USF again?

I’ve just started looking at this website on a consistent basis for the last 3-4 weeks now and have totally gotten addicted. Great stuff here. SFN you do great.

  15. LKNpackfan 12/04/2008 at 9:09 PM #

I wouldn’t mind riding down and through to Montgomery. Our friends grew up Auburn fans and, as someone already mentioned, the Hank Williams Museum is there. Ok, I have to stop, we’ve getting ahead of ourselves.

  16. blpack 12/04/2008 at 10:06 PM #

Rutgers was dismantling L’ville last time I checked, 56-7. I think RU has improved, but the Cards just don’t have it.
Any bowl is a good one this year. Go Pack!

Not trying to Hijack the post….Made the Moderator will move this to a more appropriate post…If you THINK that we don’t like LF and have a tough time with coaches….read the following.

Auburn will be looking for a new coach…why…not exactly a consensus…but it appears that the AD canned Mr. T.

Perhaps the Tarholes will need to sell their falling stocks and hedge funds to get some coins to keep Butchy from jumping ship. Mr. T. had a deal that Butchy would kill for…

    READ THIS…is it precious….

It seems apparent now that the NCAA and the ACC are standing firm by not allowing a 6-6 NC State team take one of the 9 bowl bids affiliated with the ACC.

I could never figure out why anyone ever thought any different. The NCAA even added a clause prohibiting conferences from making last minute deals with bowls to get a 6-6 team into an at-large spot.

  19. packalum44 12/05/2008 at 6:58 AM #

We are ever the eternal optimists and wishful thinkers VaWolf. You know that!

  20. Alpha Wolf 12/05/2008 at 8:22 AM #

Adventuroo — the author of that article lost me when he said:

I put Pat Dye on a pedestal when it comes to Auburn greats. He restored Auburn to equal footing with Alabama.

Auburn has never been on the same level as Alabama football, and never will be until they win a national championship. Sorry, but 55 bowls and 12 national titles is better than no national titles and perhaps half as many bowl appearances. Sure, the Tigers have owned the Crimson Tide the past 7-8 years or so, but now that looks to be over…and that’s the exact reason that they are panicking down on The Plains.

I’d say that short of hiring Jesus H. Christ and the best eight coaches out of the twelve apostles, Auburn is going to be second fiddle to Alabama both in-state and nationally for quite some time to come.

  21. packalum44 12/05/2008 at 8:57 AM #

    AlphaWolf:

You may be right but I resist the comment. Mainly because that is exactly what people say about NC State b-ball compared to UNC and Duke. F-Ball is a different beast but I refuse to jump on the AL band waggon after one great year by Saban. He is not any better than 3-4 other coaches in his conference. However, I don’t care much for SEC f-ball so I could hardly care. Just the parallel that jumps out at me.

  22. Alpha Wolf 12/05/2008 at 9:33 AM #

^ It’s not going to be just one great year by the Tide if you look at their recruiting. They are absolutely owning in-state down there. And Bama is a true flagship CF program. One of the Royal Three — ND, Michigan and them have the longest traditions and the most titles.

That’s bad news for us, that is, if we want Steven Rivers.

  23. wolfbuff 12/05/2008 at 10:37 AM #

I saw that we had a couple of recruits from AL. That’s nice to see since I don’t think we’ve had any since Joe Pate left.

Back to the original thread, I’d sure like to see us play either Rutgers or Ball State. We’d probably be underdogs in each, making a victory that much more sweet (and noticed by media and recruits). Either way, at least we’re still talking about bowl games in Dec. We haven’t had that luxury in a few years. The twists, turns, and anticipation of bowl selections are as much fun to me as the NCAA basketball tournament seedings.

  24. ADVENTUROO 12/05/2008 at 10:39 AM #

    ALPHA…

My comment was generic…if you read ALL the posts and comments, the bloggers…who wrote very professionally….painted a picture of an AD that appears to have FEWER CLUES than LF…

Also the Chancellor appears to be a Casper Milk Toast type of guy…much like ours…

I admit to having a POOR opinion of our Administration due to their blatant disrespect for Jimmy V.

I guess that ALL schools have their critics…but…really NOW…

If Chuck the Chest or Mike O’Caine had won 85 games in the past 10 years, would WE be complaining…I DOUBT that even the airheads from Klemsum would be howling (growling?) for blood with that record..

Has anyone looked at the Troy v. Arkansas St line…?

    GO PACK?

  25. Alpha Wolf 12/05/2008 at 11:04 AM #

Agreed, Adventuroo. Their AD does seem to have little clue. And it is hard to believe that they went after Petrino again down there.

Of course if any NCSU coach was averaging 8.5 wins a year with one undefeated year, our complaints would be in one ear and out the other. But I do disagree with you about Clemson’s fans…they will not be satisfied until they have the second coming of the Danny Ford era. It’s a very different mentality down there in upstate Lesser Carolina.
